TY for the video. I have a 2004 JD with the same engine (or one very very similar). Still runs great but it has needed some maintenance over the years.
I have same mower but it's in great shape. used it today to mow 3+ acres. I just vacuum up the bugs when I come across them working on an engine., they die in the vacuum.
I’m watching you video on dismantling b& s engine can I take sump housing off without taking whole engine apart as I have oil leak at where it meets main block
Congratulations, a lesson! I have a 21hp vertical shaft lawn mower. Can I make any modifications to the lubricating oil intake and perhaps change the position of the intake manifold and the carburetor so that the engine can work in the horizontal crankshaft position? What do you think? A hug from the middle of the Brazilian Amazon! Thank you very much! Cadu
@@Daniel-sd9fo yep that's all it was. This particular engine is available both with and without an oil filter. Seems kind of silly to me, but that's how they sell it 🙂 thankfully it's pretty easy to add an oil filter as you can see
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC so to add the oil filter just take off the cover and put a nipple? I went to try to find the part today they had no idea what I was talking about you don’t know the part #
Hey Joe, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate this mini playlist of videos as they'll be super helpful for me. I just got an older Craftsman lawn tractor that has this exact engine which was swapped into it at some point. The motor's got a pretty bad sump cover gasket leak and I'm considering adding the nipple for an oil filter. At 1:09:00, do you have any idea what that bolt with the square head goes to? Do you think removing it would somehow make it easier to remove the cover where the filter goes? Thanks a lot.
Thanks for the compliments! That square headed bolt is very likely just a plug for an oil pressure port. Sometimes manufacturers put oil pressure switches or transducers in there, the former for engine kill on low oil pressure, the latter for an oil pressure gauge. Removing it won't make the oil filter conversion any easier. That cover was tough to remove because it was loctited in place. I'm still kind of baffled like breaks and Stratton would include a sump cover designed to take an oil filter, but block the oil filter off
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC Ok, thanks for the info. I agree that it's odd how B&S made the sump this way. If you still have this motor, has it been running well since you've rebuilt it with the oil filter added on?
I'm working on a yard machine with what I believe is the same engine. Doesn't appear that it has a compression relief on the cam now that I watched you disassemble it. Now has me wondering, I can't get mine to start unless you rotate the crank.
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC A number of those have a compression relief on the cam because the small electric starter cannot overcome the compression. Works on centrifugal force. They often break off. Mimics a dead or low battery.
@@chrisminter7776 correct. I guess I just didn't understand what you meant when you said "I can't get mine to start unless you rotate the crank". I have seen compression release mechanisms break before causing the problem that you're describing.
I don't think I saw anything that would have kept that this from running. I would have seen that it turned by hand after taking belt off pulley and then get the booster pack and carb spray and started it up as it would probably have run in external fuel source. Then clean out carb as it needed and would be ready to put in something else. I don't take things apart that don't need to come apart
Yes, agreed. Figured it would make for an interesting RUclips video to tear it down. In this case, just getting it running would have been a pretty short and boring video most likely 🙂
Joe question i have the V Twin Intek 20 hp 406-777 i have a masive leak pulled the motor thinking i was going to get a gasket kit with the crank seals cant find one any subjestions thank you
To clarify, you are looking for the mag and PTO crankshaft seals, correct? If so, the gasket set linked in the description includes them and should fit the 406777. If you JUST want the crankshaft seals: Magneto side: amzn.to/3wtYmxm PTO side: amzn.to/3NgXrqm Be careful when fitting the crank into the PTO seal - it is easy to roll it. I'd recommend packing the seal with grease prior to installation.
This is a vertical shaft engine, meaning the crankshaft must be vertical when the engine is mounted. I have never seen a 4 stroke engine that could be mounted vertically or horizontally. The major limiting factor here is the lubrication system.
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC thats what I thought a guy told me once you cud you just had to have something that externally held oil but I was just hoping for a easy mud motor for a boat but oh well thanks man
Yes, you are correct. The "mag" side is the magneto/flywheel side. The PTO (power take off) side is the side opposite the mag side. It gets confusing on some engines that have a PTO shaft on the mag side as well. I've seen that quite a few times on Kawasaki and Kohler V-twins

Speaking of rocker’s, you Rock!
I’m making my 17 y/o watch this just because it’s an awesome tutorial of an engine.
Thank you.
Thanks very much! Kids today really do lack some of these practical skills... I've tried to get my daughter into this, but sadly... no interest.
Helpful and honest video. Have one that hasn't been inspected for about 20 years. Nice to know what I'll be digging into. Appreciate it!
New sub, great camera work, and great job.

No problem. Seems like a fairly well made engine when compared to the newer stuff Briggs mades. It was nice to see an all metal cam for a change!
Do you happen to have the part numbers for the rebuild kit?
Guess I should mention model 406777-0128-e1. Thanks
Never mind. I didn't read the description. :)

thank you Joe you are the King iv been looking all day for this thanks again
Any time - glad I could help!
That valve spring tool looks more trouble then it's worth you can just push them springs down pretty easily by hand.
You need a table 3 ft +3ft with 3 inches hole in center
Make it easy to dis and rebuild

Probably not the best of ideas unfortunately. There are a lot of things that are different between vertical shaft and horizontal shaft engines.
@@JoesGarageProductionsLLC thanks
Is there not a decompression valve in this motor?
What is that metal cap where the oil filter should be
This engine did not come with an oil filter from the factory. The metal cap where the oil filter should be is a block off plate.

Does anyone know if these B&S 20hp motors use the same pistons and crank as the 24hp Intek, or are they different sizes?
Your best bet would be to look at a parts diagram for both engines (using the model, type and code) and see if the part numbers are the same
I thought you said it was locked up
I initially thought it was. It ended up being the transmission that was locked up and preventing the engine from turning
