@@smashyrashy What Rich pointed out and y'all are downplaying is that the presumed battery price drop that would make EVs affordable never happened and this has seriously impacted the cost to convert an old car and deliver reasonable range. Copious Tesla module availability from folks crashing their $70-$100k luxury cars 10 years ago via Model S and then X seemed to be signaling a future where conversions would be as affordable as an engine swap using a target engine. But the cost of batteries has stopped dropping and the normalization of 250 mile range cars makes conversions look like really value since most of these conversions struggle to breach 120 miles range. That is a surprise for folks who were watching the conversion space carefully and watching for it to become a reasonable route.
@@karlInSanDiegothe price drop is stalling, but batteries are still getting cheaper, even if you aren't accounting for inflation. When accounting for inflation the price drop is even more apparent
What would be really cool is seeing a hybrid. We all know an electric motor is a superior drive unit, so why do hybrid cars keep connecting the gas engine to the drive train? I’d like to see an electric car with a gas generator to help power the batteries only, and not connected to the drive train.
I love the concept of EV conversion to extend the lifetime of an old vehicke. I hope there will be more standard off the shelf parts that are usable for conversion. Reusing a drivetrain from a wreck is more sustainable than throwing it out. But to have a reliable supply, we need new parts.
Hey Rich, I just finished your book and it was great. I also got the audible version. It's always great to hear the story straight from the author. Keep on making the sausage.
The first time I learned about the kei cars I immediately thought they are the perfect vehicle for an EV conversion. This series is gonna be amazing! Also at least we finally got an explanation on why the C4 project died, 2 years after the fact
When you said : but the audience doesnt have money for that. Boom, spot on. RUclipsrs very often forget where they came from or who their audiance is. People want relatable stuff, to fulfill their immediate dreams, not some distant fantasies. We want to feel like, we could kinda do it. Thanks for that mate.
I love your stuff, Rich. The subtle humor of your delivery throughout especially. I even watch the ads for the comic relief. The build is great. I would not watch otherwise, but your production values rock.
I really enjoyed your book, Rich! Once things settle down and you can openly talk about Stevon you should do another book with all the stuff you couldn’t talk about. I’d buy it immediately.
Great job on the video Rich! Thanks for making it. I've always felt that an early '70s Opel GT would make a dope platform to EV convert. Dunno how much battery range you would get, but it would likely rip around corners.
Great video and loved the “Periodic Table of Elements in Pictures” shower curtain. I didn’t buy your sponsors products but I have ordered the curtain off Amazon.
rich ive been following you for a couple years now. you are the man. thank you for your work and information. wish you the best. much love from northern florida
The solution to expensive conversions is to stop buying overpriced tesla stuff. The batteries are coveted by the home energy community so they're driving the prices way up. There's lots of groups online selling Tesla drive units at insane markups just because they did some basic bench testing on the thing but realistically they don't really fail unless they get the coolant seal failure which you can investigate pretty easily before buying something. Also the all in one controller solutions tend to be super expensive as well. I really wish open inverter was slightly more polished
Yeah I agree. There needs to be more support for other motors and BMS systems. If I do an EV swap, its going to use a chevy bolt battery and EBAY tesla motors. Those can be bought for cheap.
Rich Ev conversions will be worth it once EV companies build or own their own Mining Companies or mining processes. I agree with you prices need to drop 150% before it will be cost effective and worth the range.
Nice to see those expensive conversions, but I guess people watching them like fantasy shows on TV. They know it's highly unlikely to happen. I'm more excited for these kind of builds, looks realistic and promises an end result that's going to be a huge difference compared to the original state. Thanks for the great content guys. Keep it up.
Rich I started building electric vehicles and selling them in the late 70s. They've never been cost effective. You know it's a rich man's game. It's always been. It's will continue to be a rich man's game. But your totally going in the right direction to play with small cars but you should build hybrids. Front wheel drive gas engine and a electric drive rear axle. Using a welding machine as your electrical power. Charging batteries and the rear axle. So you could let the gas engine idle and still drive the electric rear axle off the ice engine voltage supply. A pickup would be great to use a old Miller machine in the bed linked via a pto or intermediate drive line with a centrifugal clutch so you can lock out the welding machine. at higher speeds.
Ive wanted to do this exact thing since i learned what a honda beat was in HS when i got ny G1 honda insight. The beat has been my dream car for a number of years now and i figured this would be the perfect way to keep it alive if mechanical failure happened.
I generally hate electric vehicles, but one conseolpt thta o love is exactly this. The lotus formula on an EV. Simplify, Add lightness, save money. Its something american auto manufacturers have forgotten.
I highly recommend the battery nose hair trimmers, they are so much easier to use than Swiss Army Knife scissors and fit right in with the EV centric content.

Repect to you Rich for owning up about the Corvette, I really enjoyed the Mini you did. I agree absolutely about the high priced conversions.
The real budget build is an ebike conversion (when ebike episode rich??)
I agree, really appreciate the honesty and being genuine about everything.
Thank you for your truth telling, Rich, about the high cost of conversions, even for those who can do the work themselves.
If you can't do the math on parts cost and labor, you're not serious about an EV swap
I'm still waiting for the truth about what happened to Steven/Stevon. :)
Womp womp life is expensive nothing new

It’s strangely comforting hearing that same time lapse song in almost every episode where something is being built.
I live for that big rest in the tune!
I’m not there yet in the video and now I hear the music already in my head 😁

I'm happy to see another EV project. I may not ever be able to afford an EV, sadly, but I enjoy watching videos about them.
This is the intersection of two of my favorite things: EV conversions and the Beat, cool!

Honda Beats are awesome! If only we could put them back into production :) :)
What a cool project. Looking forward to part 2. 😎
Love your book! Your life story and sense of humor made for an amazing audio book. Keep up the good work
Arcimoto should start doing kei car EV conversion parts. They’ve inadvertently developed an ideal little driveline for them there.
Step the game up. Let's see some hybrid conversions!
Very good idea to leave all the wiring in place until sure you wont need any of the connections later. :)
Great!! Another start of a build that will never be finished.
