The Sapphires is set in the heady days of the late '60s when four young, talented singers from a remote Aboriginal mission, are discovered by an unlikely talent scout. Plucked from obscurity and branded as Australia's answer to The Supremes, The Sapphires grasp the chance of a lifetime when they're offered their first real gig - entertaining the troops in Vietnam. For the girls, a whole new world of friendship, love, war and soul opens before them.
The Sapphires is an adaptation of the hugely successful Australian stage musical of the same name, and is inspired by the remarkable true story of writer Tony Briggs' mother and her family. It stars AFI Award winner Deborah Mailman and Australian singer Jessica Mauboy alongside Bridesmaids actor Chris O'Dowd, and features an unbeatable soul music soundtrack. Destined to be a smash Australian hit, The Sapphires boasts a great story full of love, laughter and tears, set against the backdrop of the social upheaval of the 1960s, with wonderful performances from the entire cast.
This is (in my opinion) the best rendition of "What A Man" that I've ever heard. The band is tight and Jessica's voice is superb on the track. Amazing talent!

This is an important film in showing that the civil rights of other peoples around the world was & are violated. Some worse and longer than ours ever were. And It also amplifies just how important the dedicated deeds of Dr. M.L. King Jr., & the Civil Rights, was & is, to the WORLD. Thank You All for making this movie.
I love this movie and this performance is the best. Fantastic vocals. Great story. Excellent acting by all. Especially like the Chris O'Dowd manager role, played to perfection and especially likeable.

Hard to believe that it was first recorded (1968) by a white girl (Linda Lyndell) with big hair, big calves & a black soul!

They would say that....also, it took years for many people all over the world to realize there were people born in Australia who had black skin. Most people only knew white Aussies. I am a Black American, I have met only white Aussies; thanks to the internet I have real live aboriginal friends.(smile)

They were performing for American Black soldiers at a night club that was mostly Black, and back then I am sure most people had never heard of aborigines, they only knew about White Aussies.

A rare case when this is the best version of this song ever even better than the original version or Salt and Pepper version too in my opinion
It's not bad, but it's weaksauce compared to the Linda Lyndell powerhouse of a voice version, it's also missing a verse.

❤❤❤❤❤ I've now seen the movie twice in 24 hours. and I am surprised that I did not know this film and from the sound and hearing I can see them but not in the foreground. But what a sound this lady has. The soundtrack is also on hifi stereo amazing. The sound. And laurel. He is dead on the penny. What a film that is also systemically like that in Psychology, completely correct, the actors fit exactly. It's a fantastic movie. Highly recommended if you still haven't seen it after 12 years, like me, and if you've already seen it, you should watch it again. Everything is in it rejection family music passion completely in the gutter or being dictated to be in full bloom and glory.

I toured S VN in '72 for the USO doing shows everywhere imaginable, recently found an excellent Aussie produced documentary about others who did the same called Entertaining Vietnam it's easy to find on google search. cliff in tokyo
