I'm a real estate appraiser in Wayne County. I've been in 100s of these houses. In 2008 to 2010 almost every house in Detroit went into foreclosure. Most of them had FHA loans. HUD was desperate to get an idea of the damage they faced. They offered very nice contracts to do a quick inspection. They didn't want an appraisal because they knew they were all worthless. They just wanted some photos and basic documentation. They were already boarded up and hopefully vacant. I did the inspections for about a year. I would dress the part in all black military clothes, shaved my head, openly carried a short barrel shotgun and carried 2 Glock 21s. If anyone looked at me, I would confront them and tell them to mind their own business. I made it as clear as possible that I wasn't the guy to fuck with. I never had any problems. I never found any squatters. It was probably because there were so few people left in the city. The cops stopped me a few times. They couldn't believe I was out doing this alone. They never gave me any grief about the guns. All the houses ended up being torn down. That's why you see so many vacant lots.
So sad! I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and we are starting to get a lot of vacant homes and squatters are living in them, setting fires (hopefully to stay warm) and then they burn down. The city has now decided to go after the derelict homes owners and fine them and charge them for the fire department's services. As of 2024 the city had billed out a million dollars to these home owners but to date about only $80,000 has been collected. Looks like a losing battle to me. I, in turn, though, think that the city has to make more affordable housing for homeless people too. We have a lot of homeless encampments where fires are being set by propane burners. It's truly sad especially when the temperatures get to -40F.
The price of these lots is so low that sometimes it would be worth buying everything, demolishing the rubble and building an environmental reserve... The government trying to repopulate regions that are already so empty seems crazy to me.
We can focus on the blight and negative side of this array ... but lets give props to the many courageous residents maintaining and living in some of the better plots depicted.
Yes they were! And they were spacious! Especially the flats! One thing remembered most about living in Detroit was that you got your money's worth!! And believe it or not, everything used to be clean! 😏

@@MichiganMade Yes, so true. Glad to see Detroit coming back but it looks like many will be displaced eventually with the prices in the housing market. So is Detroit permanently finished now that auto manufacturing has gone? Same will apply to other areas that were heavily reliant on large scale manufacturing? There are large areas here in the UK that thrived in the days of steel, coal, ship building, car manufacturing etc, that are now blighted by deprivation. Mainly caused by government plunging into "globalisation", not supporting industry against hostile imports and naively thinking the financial sector would replace manufacturing!!! Strange then that the only countries now doing well have a huge industrial base!
How industry and government could allow this to happen is inexcusable. I notice so many homes renovated and lived in surrounded by derelicts what should be tear downs. And the condition of the roads! Poor drainage, potholes everywhere. No place in America should look like this.
I'm starting to get convinced that Charlie was probably a ex green beret, navy seal, and marine Corp soldier and can put fear into anyone he sees, thus is how he probably never is in actual danger wherever he goes
