My experience with Indian food over the years in the U.S the larger cities with a larger Indian population has better quality, and more variety.
Am M'sian in the US. We get organic and more healthy ingredients for Indian and vegetarian foods here in the US.
Been to South India and eaten the food there, and of course eaten Indian food in Malaysia. As a Malaysian, of course will be choosing Malaysian Indian food because it is localized to suit Malaysian tastes.
@Liverpool FC I believe he said he prefers Malaysian Indian food. Im from Indonesia, and I prefer Malaysian Indian food too. Its a matter of preference!

The Indian diaspora spans over many countries.kumar is a Malaysian of Indian decent,ethically Tamil, (correct me if I’m wrong ).i too am of similar heritage .very many of the Indian food you find in Malaysia is rooted in Tamil cuisine,Telugu cuisine that was bright by migrants in the 18 and 19th century .it is important to note that although the Indian food in Malaysia and indian food from south India (tamilnadu) have the same names and use the same cooking techniques ,the spice composition varies and as does the quality.the mamak food culture in Malaysia is inspired by the Tamil Muslim food tradition dating back centuries.similar food can be found in Tamil Muslim areas of Tamil Nadu and their haleavy use of animal products from contact with Arab traders who “ localised” .this culture of food has spread over to Malaysia as well.the bans leaf cuisine of Malaysia closely resembles the heartland cuisine of tamilnadu,(Madurai,Chettinad and Tirunelveli regions)
The food is primarily vegetarian based and is in compliance with the shaivite Hindu faith of vegetarianism.however this is not to say that the cuisine is strictly vegetarian .due to contact with the Tamil Muslims of north tamilnadu ,southern Tamil Hindus also started developing meat based dishes ,as an addition to their traditional vegetarian based dishes.the Indians who came to work in the plantations and tea estates in Malaysia were familiar with this vegetarian based southern Tamil cuisine this subsequent generations who got into the business of food in Malaysia developed banana leaf cusines.banana leaf is the plate equivalent for South Indian food ,differing from the North Indian tradition.
Coming back to kumar ,I have had the same experience as him as a Malaysian of Indian decent (Tamil) and have been deeply involved in this amalgamation of essentially two different styles of Indian cusine which is that of the Tamil Muslim tradition and that of the Tamil Hindu tradition.
The Indian cuisine of Malaysia (I’m referring to Hindu Tamil tradition!has a much less potent use of spices than in tamilnadu India.this is due to economic reasons and scarcity of resources that the early migrants had to deal with.
However much I’m honoured to be a part of the Indian Tamil community who have persevered and kept their cuisine alive despite their hardships.
To kumar and family this long explanation I think is deserving of this video.as context will enrich our understanding of the amazing work you are doing and even add on .you sir are in a unique position of showcasing Malaysian food broadly, while living overseas, so I guess this message should act as a way of saying thanks .

You’ve given a very fine example as You said Malaysian Indian food is primarily South Indian whereas in the US it’s mostly Punjabi food that often passes for Indian food. It’s also Punjabi food that the Americans are familiar with and know as Indian food. But this Appa Kadai is Tamil/Kerala food so welcome change from typical American Indian food.
Kumaar is an Malaysian and tamilian. No indian name to diminish the tamil identity.Tamilians are living in Malaysia since 1000 ce, no more India is there. Tamilian are totally different from North Indians. Don't use the Indian name to tamil descent people in other countries to diminish tamil identity. You must use the name only to tamil migrants from when indian union is formed.

I liked the part where KyKy called for more. Very cute. The kids should try poori and potato masala. They will like it. Guaranteed. My grandchildren love them.
I think Rachel prefer the chicken curry because it is creamier.. In Malaysia our curry have more spices taste.. But if you try Malay curry it would taste kind of like the ones in America since Malay likes to use lots of coconut milk..
There is also a Malay version curry without coconut milk at all.

@Liverpool FC It probably just means either Malaysianized curry or Malayanized curry. Literally everyone knows curry comes from India.
Really enjoyed this comparison video! It was interesting to see the differences between the two countries (of course it'll vary depending on the restaurant), but it's good to see that there are places that serve more traditional/authentic Indian cuisine :D Maybe you could do a comparison between authentic Malay and Chinese dishes/cuisine? ^^

Most indian restaurants in Malaysia just Malaysianised their dishes. But you can find a gem or two of authentic ones

I believe they are called "String hoppers"; at least that's what I was told in Sri Lanka.

Watching you guys eat always make me salivate. As I live in Japan, there is no such thing as roti chanai or any authentic Malaysian foods here. It is only frozen parathas or nan for me here. Well, better than nothing, I guess.

The roti canai that you ate looks and as you both described, it seems like it is a "roti bom", which is a roti canai, but is more dense and usually way smaller
Btw the appam here at malaysia the best is with milk on top, and can also top up some brown sugar so it taste very sweet
most probbly the cook are from India as Malaysian cooking is different from India too.. like ou said logesh the briyani colour is different as in Malaysia saffron and yellow food coloring are added. Good on both of you to introduce malaysian food to the boys,,,they will definitely grows up to be hot stuff guys,,
Exactly this appa kadai is more authentic Indian as from India as opposed to Malaysian Indian food that is heavily diluted through generations. Indians in the US are just 1-2 generations old at the most 3 unlike Malaysian Indians

Big dhosai called in tamilanadu india, paper dhosai which is 90 to 150 inr we can have 4 kind of chutney and sambhar.

not sure if u know bout this fact bout roti canai,but there's 2 shape for it.. square for crispy roti canai,round for more texture of the dough.. any square roti canai mixing mostly are crunchier version than the round one... square have to request the to make it,as mostly roti canai are made in round,prep in advance..

Looking at the roti canai.. Its just likes from frozen roti canai & in deep fry..surely, it's crispy.. Unlike the M'sian version is grilled on top of hot metal plate.
My favourite Indian food will be chicken curry and roti canai haha, and yes mutton roast look delicious 😋

That is what Roti Prata supposed to be. It is not Roti Canai, but it is a type of roti in its own. They just [m]ake the dough into spiral/coil shape and bake it.

The thing is, many thought roti canai and roti prata supposed to be the same.
Original roti prata supposed to look like in this video, a bit crusty, a bit like overbaked.
Roti canai is the modified version of roti prata/pratha/paratha.

You can't compare Malaysian prices to US prices in US minimum wage is 12$ in Malaysia it's 5RM...........so obviously it's gonna be more expensive than the ones in Malaysia. I find US food portion to always be filling regardless of the price.

the one you tried was pratha, and it is different from roti canai you tried in Malaysia. The texture of pratha is harder than the roti canai. Roti canai is finer version of pratha.
The string hoppers and idlis are soft and crumbling because they are freshly made and is still hot..which is really really good and they are maintaining the standard of food they serve..Restaurants in Malaysia rarely serve string hoppers and idlis hot!..I'm a Malaysian and I know the quality of Indian food in our restaurants here are really bad and need a lot of improvement taste wise..

I think the Biryani that you ate was Tamil/ Kerala style.. While the more famous one is Hyderabadi Biryani with all the vibrant colours…
Look up Strictly dumpling Eating Biryani in Hyderabad… and Kolkata and Mark wiens trying the Kerala style Biryani…you’ll notice the difference
There are so many variations of Biryani, Kolkata style Biryani is different has potatoes in it too, The rice might be different in Kerala style ones…
Also the brown chicken curry is the one which Indians eat at home, that’s why your wife said it has a nice homely feel to it, Meanwhile chicken tikka Masala and butter chicken is eaten at restaurants, it’s orangey and more creamy and stuff…I’m assuming in Malaysia there are more Tamil type of foods, while in india There are so many permutations and combinations..like a Maharashtra style chicken curry will taste different than a Bengal style curry…

Idiyappan must have been reheated. Have not eaten it here with coconut milk only appam. Only with curries or brown sugar and coconut. Masala tea is either with fresh milk or condensed milk in Malaysia.
personally I find US versions of Asian food to be less tasty since most of it is modified to suit US taste buds
