This song is actually about the Charlie's Angels character Kelly Garrett. Back in either 1999 or 2000 there was a Charlie's Angels night on Channel 4 (in the UK) and both Jean and Nicolas spoke about this song in a very short film about it called 'Airheads' and they said the song was inspired by their mutual love of the Kelly Garrett character. I still have a copy of the Airheads short film on VHS because I recorded it due to being a fan of Air and loving the Moon Safari album. In the video to the song both of them wear T-shirts with Kelly Garrett's face on them and they tried to get a girl who looked liked/reminded them of Kelly and chose a girl who was a young student to play the brunette. The names on the score cards are 'Kelly' (Kelly Garrett) and 'Smith' (Jaclyn Smith who played Kelly on Charlie's Angels).
Nice. Thank you for sharing the story. I knew there had to be some kind of connection. Jill was the best athlete, but Kelly was the most graceful and ethereal. I'm sure that Kelly would have been the duo's favorite Angel. I wonder if Jaclyn Smith has ever seen this video? If she hasn't she needs to. I think it makes for a lovely tribute. I even wonder if the "Kelly' in the song's title refers to Kelly Garrett? "Kelly Watch the Stars" and "Sexy Boy" are possibly my two favorite AIR songs, though there are so many that I really love.
Me, about 13-14 years old, spending my tuesday evening watching MTV until 11PM on my parents' TV set, watching this clip between Windowlicker by Aphex Twin as seen by Chris Cunningham and Hyperballad by Bjork through the scope of Michel Gondry. Life was good.
This video is a metaphor for life. We are all Kelly at some point, fighting against adversity, the passage of time, the obstacles that the path of existence presents. Sometimes a hard blow, but you never have to give up, you have to play the game until the end...
@@matthewdelaney5366 It must be exclusive to the music video or maybe the radio edit? It's different to the album version in that it doesn't feature the wonderful piano solo piece during the section where they resuscitate Kelly. I think it's inferior because of that.
Music videos were so fun and creative back then. I really enjoyed watching them, especially on MTV. Some of them were so cinematic, that they took you into another world.
@Simulation algorithm i try to avoid it personally. I'm also in my 40s. You can change your mindset also. To have a element of stoicism. It makes looking back much easier
A friend named Kelly was asking for songs about watching stars. It took some clearing of mental cobwebs and Google to remember this gem. Wow it's been 25 years !! Seems like yesterday. Now I'm awash in nostalgia for the 90s, when I was in my 20s. Time machine anyone ?? I'll help you survive without cellphones and computers... I was a Librarian in the 90s.
Was it that long ago!? I was guessing 2003, but now that you mention it, yeah this does have a sound of 'Fatboy Slim' song that was early '99 so makes sense this is '98. I was 24 at the time. Damn I miss the late nineties.
It was a great year for fashion, music, art and people were so mich better back than. there was a really happy feeling from 1996 till 1999... I miss those days so much
It really doesn't get any better than this. I used to watch this on Amp. High AF...getting chills when she died from the ping pong ball to the head, and then feeling a surge of adrenaline when the paramedics leaped over the wall as the music changed pace. Pure gold.
I was having a star watching party at my house when a new girl arrived, and was introduced to me. She was from France and ask me if I threw the party because of Air's new song. When she found out that Inever heard of them she raced home and back with the CD. I've loved them ever since!!!
I saw them play live at a small event in Northern Germany the ringlokschuppen in bielefeld. It was more than 10 years ago but they were very, very, very LOUD!!
All around the world we share the same memories of that Song / Video played in our Childhood / Youth. Isnt that Magic? I remember how i was waiting for that Track sitting in front of the Living Room TV just before school and right after it, recognizing it from the very first seconds. Glory days.
Sheesh, how many hours did it take for dial up to load the video? I remember old Netscape the first time I went online and had to wait several seconds for just a picture to load.
Saw this video on tv when I was around 5 years old, always remember the game of ping pong and a ghost looking down. Tried Googling it and explaining it to my mum with no luck. 20 years on and I find the song on Spotify and wanted to see if it had a video, we made it.👏🏻👏🏻
Love the song and the silliness of the video. Slow motion hit to the head by a ping pong ball, awesome. Used to play a bat and ball video game like that in the 70's as well. Pre Atari I think
Great song and video. Features the 70s video game Pong. Which is 45 years old this year. And Moog and ARP synthesisers of similar vintage. Air were geniuses!
I came in late one night in the summer of '98. put the TV on and Joe Wiley stuck this video on and I was hooked. Bought Moon Safari the next day and still love it.
Geez, I had the SAME exact problem. I heard it once on the radio 24 years ago, while coming back from vacations. None of other records I tried to find gave me such troubles as this one. Until I heard it in TV commercial 2 days ago. What a relief.
Does anybody know where I can find this version? Have been looking on Spotify and can’t find it. Saw this video first time as a teenager on an alternative music show here in Ireland and loved it. Great band
So i just played some games of pong with my friend while playing this song on loop, it was a fun time, we had good ol laughs. Fter we done playing, i decided to watch the the music video (this video) and out of nowhere, i just started crying. I don't know why did i cry but i only know that those aren't tears of sadness or anything, those are tears of joy. This wasn't the first time AIR made me cry.
How can I say this? I like this so much that I can't separate it from my only child in my soul. Yeah, I like this. It means a lot to me. Thank you. Your music is better than my words.

Kelly and Kevin were considered popular working class named in France and Germany in the 1990s
.
Although in the video it looks like her surname is Kelly. Otherwise her opponent's name is Smith.

Good times for music.
You forgot "Spin Spin Sugar" and "6 Underground" from the Sneaker Pimps!
Still there after all these years, a masterpiece

La french touch dans toute sa splendeur. Un album mythique et intemporel !

I would like to thank my mum for introducing me to Air!
Hi Natalie. Your mum has good taste in music!

well, she had to let you out after 9 months anyway...
I'd like to thank your mum too.
cool mum you do have

That's what I've been thinking.
This one still does.
If the past was so great then how did anyone appreciate the now that we lived in then?

one of the most memorable: Unkle - "Rabbit in Your Headlights"
I love this version over the album version, the guitar riff gives it a nice edge
Back in the day when not only music videos, but music was still worth listening to.
I had forgotten how brilliant this band is! This song proves it, to this date Moon Safari is one of my favorite albums!
Air, The Chemical Brothers, Moby, Fatboy Slim - a few others - a great sound in the 90s/early 2000s.
That was *my* music at that time
Blank & Jones, Paul Van Dyk, Robert Miles, New Radicals, LEN (trying to expand the list)
The prodigy also :)

23 years on.

Midnight City by m83 has quite a surreal video and a somewhat similar electronica aspect to it.
25 years old and it still sounds like the future. The French love a good vocoder but I think Air are possibly the masters of it.
I bought the BOSS vocoder off the back of this song... did a cover of it and never used it again! 😂
I had somehow missed it all those yeas now I can't stop playing it.
This song always puts a smile on my face. So beautifull, like all good art should be.
Totally agreed ... timeless
Megasmile !
I love this song, for the complex text filled with drama, with amazing plot twists and finds. Respect to the authors!

Yeah, but if what determines a masterpiece is how good it makes you feel every goddamn time.....then I deem this stupid-ass song a masterpiece...
Thank god we can finally watch a HD cut of this video! So many of Air's videos online are so pixelated.
Instantly takes me back to 1998 - what a year!

This song is so awesome, the wide stereo image actually reminds of Beatles mixing (hard panned drums and lots of elements in the mix).
