      Well... I think it was more like someone creating this videoclip called extras agency, choosed ppl looking like random muricans, asked for coming in a totally random clothes, gave them 100-200 bucks each and cd radio and said: you have 1hr to arrange joint performance looking like some randoms having a good time and dancing in front of onlookers. And that's it xD An open secret that most of nowadays yt vids with pranks, gold diggers etc. works like dat.

  • @techgeek3366
    @techgeek3366 4 года назад +4876

    The story of the video is pretty amazing. Its deliberately made as a bit of a joke to look cheap. MTV originally rejected it for broadcast as they thought it wasn't professional TV standard. Then Norman Cook had to explain it was meant to be bad. The song took off, people thought the video was hilarious, and against the odds, it ended up winning the three awards at the 1999 MTV awards!
    When they were filming, someone was frantically running around getting legal permission from all the people in the background shots so it could be used.

    after all these years, this still cracks me up. this is probably one of the best music videos of the 90's. this won 3 vmas from mtv vma in 1999. initially i thought this was scripted, like the "background audiences" were paid actors. this was actually for real, they didn't even bother to get any permission from the theater's owner to do this cult like dance in front of that place lmfao.

      dont worry, eventually eye implants with recording will be invented and then people will watch again... with their own eyes... well, not their own own eyes...

      also if on every event someone with good camera would be recording and uploading publically, people wouldnt have to record by themselves to preserve the moment... but since they can't rely on others they do it themselves, with their crappy phone cameras, because otherwise the moment will be gone and will become just a fading memory slowly getting destroyed in the brain

    I love the fact that they are just having fun, I mean there's is no super complicated choreography and overqualified performers.
    They are just themselves having some fun. This is so inspiring.

    A bit more about this clip. it looks incredibly basic, but they actually went out of their way to look bad. They picked really bad tracksuits and awkward clothes, and then purposely did bad dancing. There was an earlier version of the clip with the crowds faces blurred out, because they hadn't sorted the permissions from the crowd. It was shot in guerilla style, so the camera wasn't obvious to the people there. The main dancer is director Spike Jonze, in rather ordinary glasses and a shirt. Norman Cook is in the crowd and appears at the end, but he's edited out in this version.
    Spike Jonze loves elaborate practical jokes so this is was his style. Roman Coppola worked on it, brother of Jonze's wife at the time, Sofia Coppola.

      It also literally cost $800 to make yet managed to win 3 VMA awards in 1999. It's actually pretty genius.

    Wow. What's beautiful about this is that each individual in the audience will have a story to tell that day during dinner, over the phone, at work the next day, in the kitchen with a wife, and everything in between.
