In this song Brassens reaffirms his non-conformism and expresses the idea that real love does not need the institution of marriage to flourish and still remain faithful to his partner. This is the most beautiful real declaration of love.❤

This song is addressed to his "wife" who technically was never his wife but "his eternal fiancée" as this song says. They didn't even live together although they went on vacation together, she was the woman of his life until his death.

One of the best friends of Brassens was Raymond Devos. You really should discover "où courent-ils" et "qui tuer". The man plays with the French langage like nobody else.

Georges Brassens ! A kind of educated anarchist, a working class gentleman, a noble heart. His songs were prohibited on the radio at his beginnings, not suitable for normal bourgeois people, although the lyrics were very rarely offensive and used classical french poetry forms. That gave even more strength to his protest songs, fighting against social hypocrisy.

translate: Lyrics of the song La Non Demande En Mariage by Georges Brassens
My dear, please, let's not put
his own arrow under Cupid's throat.
So many lovers have tried it
who paid for this sacrilege with their happiness.
    I have the honor of
    not asking for your hand.
    Let's not engrave
    our names at the bottom
    of a parchment.
Let's give the bird free rein,
we'll both be prisoners on parole.
    To hell with the mistresses
who attach hearts to the tails
    of saucepans.
    I have the honor of
    not asking for your hand.
    Let's not engrave
    our names at the bottom
    of a parchment.
    Venus often gets old
she loses her Latin in front of
    the frying pan.
At no cost, I do not want
to pluck the daisy in the stew.
    I have the honor of
    not asking for your hand.
    Let us not engrave
    our names at the bottom
    of a parchment.
We take away many of their charms
by revealing too many of Mélusine's secrets.
The ink of love letters quickly fades
    between the pages of cookbooks.
    I have the honor of
    not asking for your hand.
    Let us not engrave
    our names at the bottom
    of a parchment.
    It may seem quite restful
to put the pretty forbidden apple in the shade at the bottom
    of a jam jar,
but it is cooked, it has lost
    its natural taste.
    I have the honor of
    not asking for your hand.
    Let us not engrave
    our names at the bottom
    of a parchment.
    I don't need a servant
and the housework and its care,
    I dispense you
    that as an eternal fiancée,
to the lady of my thoughts,
    I always think.
    I have the honor of
    not asking for your hand.
    Let's not engrave
    our names at the bottom
    of a parchment.

Brassens had had no interest in school which he left as soon as possible to do little jobs. On the other hand he developed a passion for the French language and began to develop his vocabulary with medieval poets and many, many readings. So Brassens' poetry includes figures of speech, metaphors, slang, rare or sustained language, mythological references, etc. Not easy to understand indeed, you did good!

Such an absoluty beautiful love song. Indeed, marriage is far too often a love killer. In real life, Georges Brassens lived, not even at the same address, unmarried with the love of his life, surnamed "Püppchen", his Estonian muse.

    Je m'suis fait tout petit
    Un petit coin de paradis
    Saturne
    J'ai rendez-vous avec vous
and La non demande en mariage of course,
all these songs are dedicated to Joha Heiman, the woman who was his fiancée from 1944 to his death. They never lived in the same house, but they share the same grave at the Py cemetery (the cemetery of the poors) in Sète.

To be honest, this song is in old french and full of poetry so it is not easy to understand even for a french spearker. But he is one of my favourite singer from that time. I would recommend to listen to more of his song ("Les funérailles", "Gare au gorille", "Le parapluie", "La mauvaise réputation", "Le vieux léon", ....)

Hello my friend, here are the Lyrics, in french of course ! ☺

Between the pronunciation of words cut into syllables, typical of Brassens, and certain terms which are sometimes a little outdated or specific, difficult for an American to doesn't lose his Latin (« en perdre son latin » - "to lose one's Latin" - is a typically French expression which means "to lack the means to overcome something").😋😊

I think this is my favorite song by Georges Brassens. With Les copains d'abord. Et l'Auvergnat. And... 😊 But his songs must be very very difficult to understand to non-french native speakers because of the way he cuts words, and some of his vocabulary.

This song is surprisingly modern, considering the epoch he sang it.

Brassens often refers to mythological characters. There are 3 in this song.
    Cupidon : god of love
Venus : goddess of beauty and love
Melusine : many different sources with different meanings. Here it could be the one who is half fairy half human, she has to keep that secret in her love stories.

Beloved, for mercy’s sake, let us
    Not load, beneath Cupid’s chin
His own arrow, So many lovers have tried Who have paid with their lost joys for
    This sacrilege…
    I have the honour
Not to ask your hand in marriage
    Let’s not inscribe
    Our names at the end
    Of some parchment
Let’s leave a free hand to the fellow (Cupid)
We will both of us be two pris ..
    oners on parole
    Devil take the cook-mistresses
Who pin their hearts to handles
    Of pots and pans.
    I have the honour
Not to ask your hand in marriage
    Let’s not inscribe
    Our names at the end
    Of some parchment
    Venus often makes herself old
She loses her latin faced by
    The frying pan.
At no price would I ever wish
To tell off daisy petals in
    The pot of stew.
    I have the honour
Not to ask your hand in marriage
    Let’s not inscribe
    Our names at the end
    Of some parchment.
It might seem to be nice and snug
To put, out of view, at the bottom of
    A jar of jam
    The tasty forbidden apple
But it is cooked, it has quite lost
    Its fresh picked taste.
    I have the honour
Not to ask your hand in marriage
    Let’s not inscribe
    Our names at the end
    Of some parchment.
You remove so much of the charms
    By revealing too many secrets
    Of Melusine.
The ink of billets doux fades
Fast in between the pages of
    Cookery books.
    I have the honour
Not to ask your hand in marriage
    Let’s not inscribe
    Our names at the end
    Of some parchment.
Of servant I have no need
And from housekeeping and its tasks
    I set you free
    So as eternal fiancée
Of you, lady of my thoughts,
    I think always.
    I have the honour
Not to ask your hand in marriage
    Let’s not inscribe
    Our names at the end
    Of some parchment.

The sense of the song escapes you a little bit. People who are together for a long time and then get married do not change their routine.
Her Georges Brassens' song is about really being eternally fiancé, ans not having this role of wife and husband with the stereotypical aspect.
Plus the song is full of references that you do not explain. Vénus, la lechefrite, etc.
