Former Architect Turned Serial Killer Caught After Evading Police For Years: The Gilgo Beach Murders
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 9 фев 2025
- On April 30th, 2010, Shannan Gilbert called 911 from Long Island, running from a client’s house screaming before she disappeared into thin air. Half a year later, police searching for Shannan found the bodies of four other sex workers along Ocean Parkway on Gilgo Beach. Six more victims would be discovered on Long Island’s south shore by the end of 2011. For over a decade - and potentially longer - the Long Island/Gilgo Beach serial killings were unsolved. But on July 13th, 2023, police announced they’d arrested Long Island architect Rex Heuermann for three of the murders - bringing hope that finally, LISK’s victims will receive justice.

Hatred towards sex workers really burns my balls because who does everyone think SW's "customers" are? Why does society judge women so hard when men are the consumers.
And a lot of the time it’s the same cops that write them off
Exactly!!
Bc you’d have to sort out who all their customers were, and they know that would expose them.
Same reason they didn’t try to find Johnny Gosh.
Same reason for the myriad others.
I think it comes from an archaic school of thinking that absolutely needs to be abolished. I totally agree!
Patriarchy
My mom was murdered in 1987. She was killed by a woman. The woman who killed her had also killed another woman 6 months before my mom, she left that woman's body in the woods along with her 13 month old daughter who was physically unharmed. That woman was given a plea deal to two counts to second degree murder with 328 months on each count to run concurrently and she was released 9 years later. My mom and the other woman were both prostitutes and heroin addicts and I think that's why their killer got off so easy. If no one else loved my mom I did. I was only 10 years old. My mom was 29.
So sorry for your loss
Ur comment about ur mom touched my heart. God bless u and urs.
So sorry my dear ❤
i can't imagine the pain of losing your mother that way. she was so young, as were you. justice was not done for her or the other poor woman who lost her life. i hope you are doing alright and can find some peace.
I am so sorry for your loss.
The fact that they were disregarded because they were sex workers is sad. What if that was someone you knew? Your mother, your sister? Your source of employment does not make you less than. RIP
So true. I also am confused how the police don’t see that those who engage in this work are THE most vulnerable!!
@@jenn17kit’s horrible, killers know police don’t care about sex workers and that’s why they target them
@@jenn17kthey are. If someone is a sex worker they’re marked down as high risk. The cops just don’t care.
Very rampant for the times, unfortunately. Sex workers, the unhoused, LGBT individuals... it def still happens today but there is far more visibility on law enforcement these days.
Happens all the time.
What is so creepy/scary is that you can live or even walk past someone every single day who is a serial killer and have no clue.
I believe I heard you will walk past a killer or it could have been a serial killer 4 times in your life.
Plot twist: you are a serial killer.
@@dieana8238 lol nah, I’m afraid of my own shadow 😂
Terrifying.
Not only that, you could be friends or family of one too and have no idea!
As someone who has been roofied before, she was drugged!
It was literally my first thought when I heard her 911 call.
I would bet my life on it that she was roofied!
Agreed
I have had it happen to me. A bartender who knew I was only 19 let me drink. Only after one drink I appeared to be shitfaced. And at that time in my life I drank almost everyday so it took more than one drink. Then I called my mom to get me and the bartender kept trying to get me to stay and go home with him. Only about a month later he was found dead from taking his own life. My immediate thought when I heard the 911 call was how I felt that night.
Even as someone who's done drugs, it was evident to me. But the more I heard her speak or do, the more I thought roofies for sure.
@@Chelseasharesthankyou for this information! Maybe this is kinda off topic but i've always wondered if douchebag Flores roofied Kristen Smart bc she was so out of character drunk, she never got drunk at parties.
Hearing your exprience it kinda confirms that she probably was.
It happened to me. She was drugged for sure.
Kendals hair is servinggg !!
Yes, her hair looks beautiful today.
My thoughts exactly! ❤
this was my exact thought throughout the entire video
I just watched the video & was thinking this too!!
It’s sickening that cases like these are unsolved for so long because people can’t separate their personal thoughts or beliefs for the sake of a human being!
The thing is, they don’t see us as human. You know they call our cases “no human involved” we aren’t people to them
It sure is
I can't stand how terrible the police continue to treat sex workers. These are women with loved ones and they are just trying to make a living. I hope this disgusting monster gets what he deserves. My thoughts are with these ladies families ❤
Just a guess but probably because accepting money for activities is highly illegal
Right. I wish police had the same energy towards the men who pay for sex work as they do towards the sex workers themselves 💔
@@susanw9111as are a good bit if the people police deal with… sex/drug traffickers, mass murderers, etc..? not to mention these are all non consensual acts 😀
@@susanw9111the law does not equate to morality. sex workers should be protected by the law for their own safety. don’t forget slavery used to be legal, too.
They are human beings. It doesn’t matter what “career life” they chose or was chosen for them. Police just need to do what is right.
I’m not against sex work nor is this shaming. I worked security for a gentleman’s club for a few years. I saw and experienced quite a bit. I made life long friends with some dancers who also did other work. I heard horror stories. Women please be careful. Security is sooo important. And I know it’s not possible for all. Different circumstances, etc.. but if you’re going to do it. Take EVERY precaution possible. Carry a firearm a taser, at least pepper spray. Let a friend know your location at all times. Be safe with strangers. Not only in sex work situations. Nowadays we have a lot of technology that can save your life. The type of people that patronize certain establishments or certain types of work aren’t usually upstanding citizens. I understand people can’t always pick their customers. Be safe out there!
thank you for this.
I never knew any awesome guys who patronised those establishments- it’s always the creepy ones who can’t get laid or are just obsessed with sex and they generally have zero respect for those women who choose this line of work.
@@OM-or3im agreed. I could tell some wild stories about the dudes I had to throw out pissing themselves getting caught doing things to themselves. All kinds of stuff. It’s a seedy group that hangs around them.
@@OM-or3imI patronized a couple of lap dance clubs for a few years but for financial reasons usually limited myself to one lap dance per visit. Eventually I couldn’t afford to do it anymore but never had any contempt for the dancers. I feel the intense stigma is ridiculous and comparable to hate based on race or ethnicity.
This is excellent advice. I come from a country where sex work is legal and regulated, so the escorts are ALWAYS accompanied by security outside of brothels.
Glad Janell put the beatdown from jump on anyone who was itching to make a smart-ass remark about these people's work choices. Banned: No if's, ands, or buts about it. As it should be.
I grew up on Long Island, not far from Gilgo. I have been going to Gilgo every week every summer since I was little. This case really hit home for us. When the murderer was found, they closed the beach for a few days to investigate more. The entire street in Massapequa park where he lived was filled with people recording his home. It was a crazy case and the fact that the guy got away with it for so long blew our minds. Glad he was caught, i feel a lot safer at Gilgo now as a young female!
Same I lived in Freeport I remember hearing about the victim that was knocking on doors looking for help chilling prayers to the families 😢
@@Marie-dd1yi yes it’s so eerie isn’t it? Glad we caught him’
So, the local community was suspicious but it took this long for police to grab him? Ohh that just makes tragic case (s) even worse! 😢
Glad you have a better sense of safety now but please still be aware & safe ❤
@@simonearchibald2664the community had no clue who he was and those of us who live here barely ever saw news of this case. It was mostly talk on Reddit. We all knew there was a serial killer. We all knew police were not doing a thing about it. There were a handful of rumored suspects. Most people knew the killer was not hanging out at Gilgo. They just used Gilgo as a dump site.
I do not believe Shannon was killed by Rex. He was not hanging out at the beach waiting for a sex worker to show up. That area where Shannon was is a private community. Rex committed these crimes strategically when his family was out of town. I believe a local resident in that community killed her.
I met one of the victims, Amber Costello, a few times. We’re from the same town. She was so sweet. A few weeks before the bodies were found, I hung out with her sister a couple of times. Never once did she mention Amber was missing. This case has ALWAYS stuck with me. I’m so glad she may finally get justice. 🥺
I’m so sorry for your loss 😢❤
Gosh, Shannon was so close to safety but just slipped away. It's baffling that they couldn't connect her call to the missing persons report sooner. It's so heartbreaking these women are being disregarded so easily by the police department. Too bad the police department will never be held accountable..
26:00 I feel as tho when Shannon went and knocked on the female's door for help she would have probably been able to trust her and told her why she was scared and got more questions answered.
That woman angered me so much, so many people could be saved if people didn't just "mind their own business"
@@zulemapalitoare you serious? This woman probably feared for her own safety. You know how many cases there are where a woman screams for help on soemones door and they open it only to have others pop out of no where and they barge into the home to rob and/or assault/kill the occupants in the home? If I was this woman and a woman was screaming and banging on my door Id be weary of opening it as well and would call the police instead, especikly as a woman who lives by herself
@zulemapalito and you my friend are the perfect candidate for human trafficking! The #1 thing they do to catch women is to use other women by themselves 😂 its ok. Now you know
Dang Kendall! Back at it again with the wavy hair. It’s always my fave look 🎉
Thank you for the memorial at the end ❤ those people deserve to be remembered, not just the killer. I’m grateful that you guys spend time talking about the victim’s lives
Women on this planet deserve better than this violence and hatred. How dare he
As someone from Connecticut living in midtown manhattan New York with sex worker friends in New Jersey thank you for covering this. Everyone is relieved he’s been caught. I can’t imagine if it had been one of my girls. People forget sex workers are people/human beings just like the rest of us. These cases take a while sometimes to get traction because of that.
As someone from LI and who has family that live STREETS from where this monster lives, is insane and crazy how much this “hits close to home”. Whatever these girls path in life took them, they are still someone’s mother, sister, daughter and friend. This whole case is just so sad. Thank you for covering this case. Love you guys! ❤️
As someone who was into true crime occasionally this case was the one that made me obsessed with true crime. Melissa Barthelemy was my homegirl in middle school until she transferred to another school. We lost touched but I always wondered what happened to her. Thankfully I was able to find her on social but at the time I didn’t know she was missing. So when I found out she was one of the victims her remains were found broke me heart because social media was reconnecting me with a lot of my friends from elementary school. For along time I was hoping they found who did and I’m glad they finally got him
Thats so sad, I'm so sorry for you 😢
So frustrating that law enforcement never took any of the families seriously!!!
Do these cops not know the saying, “that’s someone’s baby” ?
na, MOST likely not i think tbr
Nope. Classic cop behaviour
Its not that they don't know, they just don't care
You obviously don't know the mentality of people who work in the police.
The line of work should not be a reason why police will not take a case. The way the police treat the victims family is sad.
My sister was a drug addict and prostitute, she was found in the same hotel the Craig’slist killer left some of his victims and the cops just wrote it off to she probably over dosed or purposely killed herself. It’s sad. They don’t care about women who did sex work. And they have families that loved them.
I’m so sorry
I’m so sorry for your loss. In my heart I know she’s in a better place now. She will her get justice - karma is real. Sending love your way ❤
I am so sorry for your loss😭she is lucky to have you as a sister remembering her and fighting for people in her position to be recognized
As a Mainer who worked in Scarborough and lived in Portland until March when my husband moved us to California for work, hearing about Megan gave me chills. I’m so ignorant to the bad things that happens in Maine. It feels so safe and remote :(
I'm also from Maine, and I agree. There is obviously crime in Maine, but it seems much less so than most of the other areas of the U.S.
@@bonna6601nah its just hidden there's lots of crazies in Maine lol.
I truly hope and pray he confesses to the victim’s who have gone unidentified and he discloses the location of any bodies that authorities don’t know about yet so that the families can have closure.
Such a monster. He knew that having SWs as his victims wouldn’t get much attention. Little did he know he would eventually get caught, not as smart as he thought himself to be. RIP queens😭❤️
I just want to say, Kendall’s hair looks amazing today!
I was gonna say exactly this!
Sorry to my American friends, but I’m forever disgusted by how poor the quality of your emergency call staff are. The disinterest, the lack of proactivity, the rudeness.
As an American, I take zero offense. I'm disgusted by my country.
I live in the south. Even if someone was an avid hunter, 200 weapons is absolutely absurd. I’ve never heard of anyone owning that many weapons
Some of us collect. Don't lump us in with this guy
@NoperDurden people who collect weapons are still creepy tbh
@alexu176 if you say so. A lot historical weapons are really interesting. But to each their own.
The fact that his wife filed for divorce so quickly... says a lot.
yup. so many spouses in these cases tend to be in denial or stay with their spouse that are convicted but the fact that she didn’t is telling
Haven’t watched this yet.
However, I can’t help but blame the wife.
I am sorry
But if you don’t know your husband is a serial killing monster
You got something not right about you.
Deep respect and grief for the victims and their life-long suffering families.
There are no words
Except I am so sorry.
@@tatorials3608this is such a wild statement😂 at the end of the day, you will never know anything about anyone 100% he was also doing these things why she was away. She is in no way to blame
me realizing that i am the quiet neighbor that people would probably think of in this instance, but i swear i just have social anxiety 😔
Same lol I rarely leave my home 😂
knowing that all of this happened all right around me is just absolutely horrifying. that holiday inn is not too far from where i live, it’s so chilling to know this was so close to home.
my father-in-law has a friend who went to high school with the killer and he said he was nothing but a creep and an absolute weirdo and that this didn’t surprise him at all when he was arrested.
If only Shannon let that old man call 911 for her.
I love that he still called 911 though. Good samaritan
As someone from the area, it’s refreshing to hear someone covering this so in depth after all these years. The most you heard publicly was that there was a "rumor" there was a serial killer on Long Island. Gotta love the NYPD. Wish I could say I was surprised this was how they handled it, but I’m not. Two young men also went missing from the Brooklyn Mirage this last month and wound up dead at the same spot in the same river days after being missing. That’s been brushed passed too. Thanks for focusing on these women for the human beings they were ❤
this monster lived a town over from where i grew up. what he did to those poor people + their families is truly nausea inducing. surreal that he's finally been caught, thanks for covering this!
The former chief of police James Burke was arrested yesterday. He also derailed the FBI investigation into the Bilbo murders. Also went to prison for beating a cuffed man, tried to cover it up. Still collecting a 145k pension. Busted trying to pick up a male escort
It’s just…. absolutely horrific that there was basically an entire graveyard of poor women strewn out in the open and it took the police THIS long to do the damn work to find it. I hope they all had a really really dark, hard look at their entire institution as they combed through miles and miles of remains that were right under their nose. God bless the families and rest in peace to these precious souls.
It’s so crazy to see this on mile higher as someone who’s grown up hearing about this case their whole life on long island. Still blows my mind that they finally caught him.
SWrs took me in when I was a homeless teen, I hate the way they are treated. I’ve been around strip clubs since that age and seen horrible things. One girl I knew recently passed under sketchy circumstances, but haven’t seen anything done about it by police despite relentless reports about one “regular” at the club
Wow. This one brought me to tears. Thank god these victims are finally getting justice and this monster can never hurt anyone again.
You should talk about the Arizona and Oregon serial killers who were also recently caught.
Their was one caught in AZ? 😮 Do you know they name?
Just wanted to say I love your content . I'm a truck driver and it helps pass the time . Been binge watching for a few weeks now .
i’m from Hempstead and for years never thought they would solve this case. Thank you for bringing more awareness to it , It’s crazy traumatic journey and i hope we will get justice after all these years
This is so crazy watching you guys discuss this case. I’ve been watching for years and I’m a Long Island native SPECIFICALLY a massapequa park resident. I live a few blocks from Rex and walked my dog by that house all the time. For years these murders have haunted all of us and hearing about the neglect from the Suffolk county PD is disgusting but also not shocking (BTW they are one of the highest paid police officers in the country). Crazy to think this case could’ve been solved years ago and he’s been living under our noses all this time.
THANK YOU for spreading information about these kind of cases, I feel like they never get enough coverage just because of their work.
Long Island native here. The irony of this is that massapequa is known for being the home to many cops
im so glad they caught the guy that did this. ive been following this case for several years and watched alot of documentaries. alot of these cases go unsolved but for this one to actually get solved is amazing. cant wait for the trials to start. i wanna see how rex reacts to being in the hot seat
Makes me crazy that people write off sex workers as non human and/or deserving of horrific abuse and death! Geezus!
Being an architect….is it possible he could have taken the victims to other abandoned properties that he or his company owned?
That’s what I thought
It’s scary…to think of how many demons walk among us disguised as humans
Shannan Gilbert on the phone with 911 gives me the absolute creeps
The neighbors have a lot of nerve saying they want the house torn down. The rest of the family is innocent. Are the neighbors going to compensate them for their house? We don’t even know if any murders happened at the house.
I was thinking the same - zero care for the remaining family members who had nothing to do with this heinous crime.
mmm...I think it probably has more to do with it being a circus attraction. Then they also have to make sure people aren't breaking in etc..
@@adalahdi6004 they make alarm systems for that. There’s no need to tear down the house.
I was waiting for you to over this on your main channel and am so happy I found it here. This guy lives in my town! Right around the block from my grandma! Absolutely crazy. My cousins and I would always ride our bikes past his house wondering what was up there. It always looked so out of place.
Finding out who this killer was made me so scared. I commute every week into manhattan from Long Island and I work as an engineer making this eerie. There wasn’t nearly enough coverage when this happened; I even asked my mom since I was a child when this happened. P.S. as a Long Island native, you guys did great with pronunciation of the towns
This is incredibly sad, it’s so crazy how you can live next to someone and think that you know them & it turn out that they’re a devil in disguise.
So glad you guys are covering this! What a sick man. I just won’t have children for fear of the sick people in this world. It’s truly scary out there. Love this podcast & all the different cases/topics you guys cover.
My God, those women were MURDERED by a psychopath and everyone was fixated on the fact they were sex workers?? They were human beings with family and friends who loved them! It’s so sad that the police pick and choose what cases to give the most attention. Their job is to serve and protect, so look past their job title and find out who killed them in hopes to protect other women from being killed. May those beautiful women rest in piece and receive the justice they deserve! 🕊️ It’s relieving to know that the man behind these murders is finally in custody, I just hope our justice system doesn’t fail these women again.
Thanks for covering this horrible case. So very, very sad. My heart breaks for their children and family that are left behind with broken hearts forever. Such devastating details. I wish there was a way to treat these horrific impulses so they don’t go rampant raping and murdering.
Hey Kendall I just have to tell your that your hair is gorgeous 😀👍🏻
He lived blocks from me. Long island is breathing fresh air knowing this sicko is in custody.
RIP to all these ladies and the poor child and man too. I hope they all eventually receive justice!
Thank you for covering this case 🙏🏼 may the victims rest in heavenly peace ❤️
this one hurts differently...
Sex work is work!!!! And it should be safely regulated. Our system is absolutely as much at fault for this. I hope the victim’s families and friends find closure and peace.
I imagine it''s actually a much harder job than most of the rest of us have
If it is work then any boss at any job can request that as terms of employment for the job
The memorial video was beautiful 😢 thank you for sharing this. My heart breaks for these women and their families. Sad how most were just hurting and lost
The corruption with police in this case is insane. And I think there is two killers, seperately.
As always great job so respectful of the victims & their families. So glad this monster will never be able to hurt anyone again ! Only love sent to all the families. I hope they can have some peace now.
Thank you for the backstory on the young ladies.

i live on long island and watching this case unfold has been so crazy. it's sickening that the victims were just discarded because they were sex workers. thank you guys so much for covering this case!
Praying for justice for all the victims and their families! When you lose a love one in a horrible way they love ones left behind continue to be victims as well! Their lives mattered!
omg I hadn’t realize that you guys made a video on this or else I would have watched it sooner. I live very close to this so I know a bit about this story but I am still excited to hear what you guys have to say. Thank you for covering this.
Whats scary is I live in Orlando Florida and take bike rides in my area on my way back had a conversation with the Crossing guard who had said not long ago she had seen a failed abduction by people in a suv with tinted windows. Just mind blowing that this show comes on after. O_O Just a reminder always be mindful of your surroundings.
Please stay safe and alert and carry protection of some kind. No where is safe.
The scariest is knowing that there is a second murderer out there
The woman on CNN said Rex basically told her he was the killer. He even explained how the bodies were hidden and she didn't go to the police ??
Not my next door neighbor being an old man that lives alone and doesnt talk to anyone 😅
Kendall’s hair is just omg 😍😍😍😍😍
shannan mom and her peers when they protest gave me chills
I’ve literally been waiting for y’all to drop this episode since the news broke THANK YOU
This is all so sad and it hits home because his wife is Icelandic, it is unheard of in our country that someone is either related or married to a serial killer, i hope those souls will get the justice and peace they so deserve.
You don’t taunt your victims family on your 1st/2nd victims.
There are more somewhere
I agree. That smacks of an established serial killer to me. It takes practice to become that bold
It’s dehumanizing and discouraging the way that people in general treat people if you’re a drug addict , working as an escort or low income/poor, mentally unstable or homeless. They act as though you don’t matter and that’s exactly why people are targeted because they know that’s the reaction unfortunately.
I’m falling behind on your videos!! Trying to catch up is going to take me a day! Love you guys!
I literally grew up ~1 hour away from here. It’s honestly bizarre seeing all of this go down so close to home. I’m very interested to see how all of this plays out.
The 911 sounds like she’s drugged or something the most bone chilling thing I heard today
Respect for all the work you put into shining a light 🙏
I was hoping this would be covered after he was caught. I hope their families find peace. I feel so bad for his victims.
Most of those cops that ignored them for being prostitutes, they themselves would purchase them and cheat on their wives. Yet disregard them
Lived where this happened all my life and this story is so insane
“Baby Doe” is possibly one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard 🥺
In the long run, it’s much safer for everyone involved if it just becomes legal.
The thought of a murderer living that close to you gives me chills…
Why is it so hard for the police to take a woman seriously when she's ringing them? Just find her and help her for God's sake!
I love how the Lady says she can't ping her phone. No I can't track where you are. I know first hand that's BS I'm from a middle of nowhere town in the state of Montana where we are always quite behind in the times. If they found my phone way back in 2003 no doubt they could do it. Pissed me off when I watched this case on Hulu and heard it.
I’ve needed a MH video today. Can’t wait to hear y’all’s take on this psychopath. ❤ you both
The fact that these woman were sex workers shouldn't matter. They are human and they have families that love and care about them. Maybe if the police had taken this seriously the killer could have possibly stopped and arrested sooner.
Kendall looked so slay in this ep just wanted to acknowledge her glowing and the hairrrr omg
