Back in 76-77 my brother-in-law had a nice orange 70 340 Duster. Slightly modded with 3.91 gears and a 4-speed that car was QUICK! In fact in the small town we lived in (around 15,000 people) he was hard to beat. The only race I saw him lose was to a 427 67-68 camaro and a 440 six pack challenger. It was that fast.
@Speedy rapacki I said small town, not Mayberry RFD, LOL. I was there when my brother-in-law took out many big block contenders. That car was quick and well known......
I bought a 1969 Dart. In Sept. of 1968. It was a 340 4 speed 3.55. Posi. I ordered with the “ Swinger “ stripe deleted. It was the coolest car I ever had. Parenthetically: it came with no headrests required on all cars manufactured in 1969…. Mine was built in 1968 , so l guess they saved a couple bud. We had a different world back then
No doubt your Dart was a hoot to drive. I like that you had the stripe deleted. Stripes, badges and decals do not improve the performance. You had what I call 'all cake and no icing' (stripe).
That second race, if I was in the dart, would have been exciting as can be. That little spread of 4 mph means that you would be screaming for the finish line to arrive as the Chevelle was eating up the gap at almost 6 feet per second, or just over 1/3 of a car length per second. I always love the rush of being chased by a quicker car in the quarter. Most addictive drug ever is being the slower car in a bracket race.
Little more gearing out back and the Chevelle would definitely be much faster. For a heavy car and a 4-speed, 3.31s just don't cut it off the line. I never understood why GM didn't have 3.73s as standard for these cars.
So are Boss 302’s and that 302 D or some designation Chevy put out in the late 60’s! Both of these were badass. I think they were both racing engines to compete in the Trans Am series was it?
Awesome cars! Awesome racing! Back in my day, a friend had a 69 Dart, 340, 4 speed. He knew how to shift! My neighbor had a 70 Chevelle(sp?), 454(!), auto tranny. He let me drive it one time. Absolute tire melting power. It was equal to my bee. Ahh, the good old days...I was sooo lucky to have lived back then when all these cars were cheap.

@@bukkuk5949 hi! Well, yes and no, my friend. There cars aren't really stock. These guys are allowed any modification available from their factory. Mopar had 4.89 rear gears available. I saw one, on here, the other day, that had a 5.0 rear gear available!!! Maybe, it was AMC? ICR. More stuff like, electronic ignition, shift kit, 2.5" exhaust pipe, +0.70" over bore, 1.5 point increase on compression ratio. I think I hit most, if not, all, of the allowable mods. The list is posted on the description page for the video. Plus you've got to factor in the driver. I lost 2 races, to slower cars, because I smoked my tires off of the line. They didn't. TH400 3500 stall, 4:88 gears, 33 inch Micky Thompsons. Both street cars ran neck and neck high 11s every trip we took to the track. Always impressed by those little 340s.
I'll take the Dart. Love them and back in the seventies early eighties my brother owned a sweet '70 F8 green Swinger 340. My other brother owned a cool bright yellow '72 Duster 340. Both those car's were sold long ago but I still have my '71 340 Challenger convertible I got back in '83. I learned from their mistake's. That Chevelle is sweet too. Man, I bet that Dart owner wishes he could get a do-over on that last run. Talk about 2 equality matched cars. If it was 1/8 mile it would be all Dart.
NICE... and surprising! IMO the Dart likely had excellent transmission and torque converter "prep". Add the allowable 2.5" duals, slightly better gearing vs Chevelle and over 500 pounds lighter... Interesting that the original magazine road test had it MPH at 96mph in the 1/4 so the power is in line with stock. I do wonder about the tire sizing though as the Dart seems to have wider tires than many of the "stock" ones on others (pretty sure they all have drag compound rubber). Something else of note is on Nick's Garage Nick dyno tested that air cleaner style on a 440 and it performed surprisingly well... I would guess on the 340 it works very well. Great video!

I wonder if either of these cars put better gears for drag racing in their rear differential like 411 how much it would improve their quarter mile et’s? Possibly under 13.0 seconds ????
I know Mopar used 3.91 as the performance option in a lot of stuff kind of surprised the Dart didn't have it. Maybe it wasn't an option. While both cars would probably get down the track faster it would also increase the difficulty of getting off the line on the specified tires.. So who knows the true gain.
Both cars represent real street cars the way most of them came in the day 3.31 3.55 gearing both cars in the high 13s with this kind of gearing is pretty good on bias ply tires remember these cars aren't sporting a overdrive transmission 3.73 or 4.10 gears are cool until your on the highway turning 3800-4000rpm at 75mph isn't but l get both would accelerate better with 3.73-4.56 gears

Was. Doing 13:88 in the 1/4 I wouldn't even try, 383s 440s, and hemis no problem 340 always just a little bit quicker off the line
Had a Charger that came with a 3.23. Turned into a totally different car just by putting in a 4.10. Well...took out the 318 and put in a 440. That helped, too.
The big 3 knew what they were doing as far as packing a smallish HO V8 in a light weight body. And they were dirt cheap to buy brand new. For me, the Chevelle has the looks, love the 70 the best, but the lil Dart is surprising quick, and the 4 speed cars were set up from the factory with much better ign, cam timing, and carb jetting. IMO, the times we see here are much more representative of what fairly stock cars of the time could do, and I like to see that!
13.8 with a na small block is as good as a 2004 Mustang GT. Mopar really had their shit together in the late 60s early 70s. You could buy one of these for nothing brand new as well.

How bout that green mopar next to the chevelle in the intro. 70's charger? So ugly its beautiful. Gotta love the underdog 340

Thanks for the heads up!
70 Chargers still had that Coke bottle shape similar to the 68 and 69 models. 71 is when they changed to the body shape of this green one.
That charger was too heavy, maybe if they tweaked it to the limits of the rules .
There were 51,455 of those Chevelles built and only 50,287 of the bottom ends blew out of the 396s.
never saw that happen not even once..get ur facts straight
@@GH-el9ch 396s had notoriously week bottom ends but, relax, just playing around.
You bet back in my mopar day the killer small block is for sure the 340.. 275 hp wink wink more like 325 hp stock or stroke her she was fast!!!
Both were close
Very!
typical race from back in the day. Its a drivers race for evenly matches rides
Just be sure to never budge your car until it officially turns green!!
Those dodges were light , the Chevelle is bit more comfortable
Dart all the way!
Fart all the way 👍👍
Shart all the way up
had a 71 340 4 speed demon and beat the chevelle 396 just like that
What settings do you use to film this ? Russet ?
What decade do you use to reference your burns? 90s?
Years ago I saw so many 340’s absolutely destroy a lot of big blocks.
I had a 70 Challenger 340 six pack outran multiple 396 is 350s
340="Little Hemi"
327 L79 = "little hemi" killer
@@GH-el9ch I don't think so
I'm a Mopar man
That first race made no sense. Both launched at the same time, Dart put a 1,5 cars length on the chevelle and was .10s slower 🤡
Drag racing 101: reaction time isn’t included in ET 🤡
Even with the gears and weight disadvantage, the Chevelle won TWO of THREE!
I will take the dart in this one. But give me a 70 Chevelle 454 and that dart can kick rocks
Awesome. , Thanks Cars & Zebras , ps my pastor says his church will take any denomination especially tens and twenty’s
I'm amazed that the 340 pulled the 396? 😮
Good fun . 😁
