The “waka-jumping” clause is not being invoked because it suits them - Chippy can now distance himself from the more radical members and continue the charade of being old school Labour. At the same time, he knows that his is the only party that the Maori Party would join in coalition. Win/win for Labour, Lose/lose for the rest of us. True enough democracy is under attack, but this matters not a jot to the Left, as they consider their cause so righteous.

Democracy is not able to be run on the cheap ,principles should be held at all cost and not flippantly toss aside with a " oh we're having a election soon let just wait till then ". The so called waka jumping bill should be absolute and not a choice of convenience to this or that party because they're worry when it's their turn to rule it might just happy to them .

The recent waka jumping may not be informing us of who are the real supporters of democracy but it sure indicates who have blatant disregard! Is there a nexus between attitude to this round of waka jumping and promotion of separatism (co-gov etc)? They have the look of being outward manifestations of inwardly held anti-democratic ideologies with a huge dose of elitist arrogance.

  • @RodAnderson-q4c

I personally cannot help but wonder if these two Waka Jumping M.P's one of whom is/was a List MP, who did get enough electorate votes to EARN the seat she held, and has willingly given up, have been able to behave in the appalling, undemocratic way they have, and continue to behave, because they are Maori, and the Speaker of the House, who I believe is also Maori, is scared of the inevitable fall out, along with accusations of Racism, which would undoubtedly occur should he deal with these two women correctly? This current Labour Government has follishly allowed the Maori Party of New Zealand, who represent, at most, twenty percent of the entire population of this once democratic nation, to both have to much say within Cabinet, and dictate what this Government does while in power? Whoa Betide the peace and tranquility of this country should the Maori Party, especially with the current crop of people at the head, become "Kingmakers" at the end of the october general election?

I disagree with a full Maori party parliament which there will never be, Maori politicans are far too divided within parliament. What I do agree is that Winster Peters should be the next Maori Prime Minister. Lets face it Te Pati Maori party will just be another party with more Maori politicans, who reality are busy arguing in parliament rather than looking within to better our people, so they are getting paid lots of money and not really doing a dame thing. What has these Maori done for Maori except Winston who created a Green card for our elderly in general and they received free public transport etc. I no of Donna Awatere who corrupted the pepe funds.

On today's argument, National should have got another list MP to preserve proportionality. This bill was only ever demanded by NZ First to allow Winston to keep his MP's in line as he could threaten to remove them.
