The Emilia Perez situation reminds me of the scene from American Fiction in which the two white authors want to award “my pafology” to raise black voices while completely ignoring the black judges in the room who don’t want to award the book.
Hollywood has completely ignored Latinos who have been for months criticizing the movie’s depiction of Mexico.

Sure there are overlapping cultural similarities due to colonization but Spain often times lives a different reality from Latin America.
I also roll my eyes when people say stuff like "They're trying to colonize Spanish!" You can't colonize Spanish, it's a colonial language that for some reason like English and Portuguese is more often associated with the colonies than the original European country i.e. the USA and Brazil for the former and latter.
Instead of trying to glorify Spanish why not try to revive indigenous languages and give more official status to both indigenous and creole languages born in the Americas.

And another tragedy is that, although it's justified that she is now suffering consequences for her actions, Karla Sofia Gascón has become the main target of the movie's hate, much more than any directed to Jacques Audiard or other people involved in the film that made distateful comments (like the casting director saying that there weren't any Mexican actors talented enough to play the roles), proving once again that people within minorities are almost always hit the hardest while those with a more priviliged combo (straight white affluent men) will more often go by scot-free.

KARLA CREATED A ONE-SIDED RIVALRY THAT NEVER EXISTED ON THE PART OF FERNANDA TORRES, who only praised Karla.
In the end, the only truth remained, Karla's film is terrible in itself, in addition to being a terrible representation of the trans community and Mexico.
Only now, with the revelation by the Canadian journalist of the of the HATE SPEECHES THAT KARLA DISTILLED ABOUT ALMOST ALL MINORITIES AND DEFENDING HITLER that the international media is beginning to question her and the film Emilia Perez.
And why was Mexico, the country "represented" on screen, the last country to welcome Emilia Perez if it was to celebrate the Mexican people (there is ONLY ONE MEXICAN ACTRESS in the cast, because according to them they can't find anyone else competent in Mexico).
P.S. THE OSCAR ACADEMY DID NOTHING ABOUT THE UNFOUNDED ACCUSATIONS that could damage Fernanda Torres and I'm Still Here.

I've seen Emilia Perez, and while I liked it mostly there is another point of view I would like to share, I think this is a film about a Narco kingpin, that always gets what it wants: pretty young wife, checked, top of the cartel world, checked, gender reassignment surgery male to female with new identity included, checked, get his kids back, checked, help the helpless with his money and connections, again checked, she even gets another squeeze lover to go with all the above... criminals in Mexico are always trying to pass their crimes as respectfull individuals with normal jobs, and Emilia gets even the "ascension" to sainthood that many young people in Mexico see as worthy to try, getting into a gang and sell narcotics, living the life for 8 or 10 years, and most likely getting killed and a great burial scene... Emilia does the same, the raise and fall of another "Jesus Malverde" or "Jesusa", the fact that this narco is a trans woman is irrelevant, she's never stops being a narco... Now I understand that maybe foreign persons or film-makers might have a though time to understand that this is the reality in Mexico, so I can see why use a musical film format to describe this society, but this is where this film is far from perfect, I've seen this movie a couple of times, and I still cannot recall a tune, song or number from this, 'Dancer in the dark' this is not, as a musical you got to use the song numbers to transcend where simple spoken words cannot, not to sound like a disney movie, but there is not even an 'i want' song... Here in Mexico there is a lot of criticism of this movie, but it is very shallow, Selena Gomez's bad accent, or the fact there are no mexican actors in the main cast. The main reason for me that this movie falls short of being great is the fact that is not that different from other tales of latinamerican druglords, well maybe, trans-women can now be narcos as well, so hurrey for inclusivity...

Imagine giving the wrong message about trans people, about a serious problem latino countries (and others) live everyday like narcos and kidnappings, a whole wrong stereotypical depiction of a country you know nothing about and even after the whole country of Mexico, other Spanish speaking countries and the trans community criticize the movie for obvious reasons, the director and main star keep throwing not subtle but direct obvious shade to said country and communities. Not even Karla’s Spanish in the movie is good cause you can clearly hear her Spanish accent. Not even the documents in the movie are well made or realistic. Acting is real bad, the only half decent one is Zoe Saldana but come on… if you make a movie and say it’s based in the USA or in Britain you will expect the accents to match. Remember how everyone criticized Keanu for his “English” accent? Yeah, same issue but worse cause not only the accents, if you know actually Spanish the dialogues make little sense nor is how people would normally talk. So all of this movie is wrong and I’m sooo glad Karla’s tweets resurfaced, seems like a fitting situation tbh. If this horrendous thing wins any Oscar in a year full of actually really good movies, what a f*** joke.

  • @samfilmkid

It sucks because Audiard has a pretty good track record for making movies with marginalized groups at the center. "Dheepan" which is about Sri Lankan refugees eking out a living in Paris, "A Prophet" the story of a French-Algerian rising through the ranks of France's penal system and the underrated "Read My Lips" about a deaf woman who gets mixed up in the criminal underworld.
All of those movies are gritty, grounded films. "Emilia Perez" feels like an extremely calibrated effort to appeal to the more modern tastes of Academy voters by checking off as many boxes as possible. You really gotta go looking in other corners of film beyond the Netflix Awards circus to find more interesting movies sometimes.

Millions feel the consequences of the rise of these warlords, thousands of mothers scour the land searching for their long lost loved ones, millions of kids have no future and join to eb cannon fodder and the French man decides to just come in and make a comedy that is ankle deep? Why does this movie look like it was made no place in particular about flat, cartoonish, characters with no personalities of their own (they each get one or two traits and opaque emotions apiece) ? Does the film find them as uninteresting as audiences do? Why is such a big deal made out of proposing that a person's gender is only skin deep and that it can be changed through Instant Cosmetic Surgery -- miraculously obtained by a killer/abuser/drug dealer/gangster who then spends the rest of the movie lying about who she is and what she's done to make her rich enough to afford the surgery? Being "trans" in this movie is just a way for the title character to go into hiding and disguise her criminal history. This is the opposite of a trans story in which somebody tries to live authentically and be their true self -- which is only one level on which "Emilia Perez" is laughably inauthentic.

I found EP watchable because it tried many things at once but there was lots of stuff that didn't work. I was especially uneasy about the protagonist being presented as this great person as if the movie decided to totally ignore all the bad things they had previously done. That was lazy writing. The problem is that Audiard has a soft spot for gangsters and violence (cf. his other movies). I think that didn't mix well with the transition arc, it's not what the trans community needed as representation.
