Yeah... sadly the animation is getting cheaper and cheaper in them DC animated films. Either they keep on slashing the budget in half with each new film.... which sadly happens in certain studios.... or they have a hard time finding good animation studios to collaborate with.... which is another problem in animation right now. :( :(
Multiverse agreed! DC animation has starting to feel like really cheap anime. There bar for cheap anime has gone down even father as anime is outsourced to China. ☹️
this is one of the best DC animated movies I've seen in the last 5 yrs . The story was really well done, you quickly forget about the limited animation. Kept you guessing till the end. Who ever wrote this screenplay did an amazing job
Didn’t expect this for today!! Definitely agree about the animation being cheap, I would get glimpses of a 2005 Cartoon lol. To be accurate it reminds me of the animation in the Spectacular Spider-Man Cartoon series.
Finally Bruce Timm did something right for once. Movie had some flaws but it good all the same. Now all we need is a Rated R animated DC story of The Creeper (jack Ryder),Plastic man or The Mask(Dark horse comic). Also it would be awesome if Bruce Timm and Paul Dini went back and worked on Freakazoid like they originally wanted him to be like, but unfortunately it will never happen.
Bruce Timm produced the movie, just like he did with the majority of the animated movies. The New 52 movies are the ones he doesn't produce. And he actually did one of the voices. Also, he made two bad movies and suddenly everything he does is crap?
The movie was great, best one from DC Animation in a minute. I was more then fine with the art. Some people just need to find fault with something. You people are acting like the guys from South Park penned it. The art didn't take my mind off the movie which is the only way I would feel the need to complain. 8.5/10 !!!!
Yes. Nice movie, by the way. Also, I just happened to be lucky enough to watch the movie before I've heard the term "gaslighting". So the mystery worked for me, which was a bonus.
I loved it. And loved the Sherlock's refferences. When Batman says "One of my mentors said that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth". And The Robins are the Baker Street Irregulars.
wow i super love how you make reviews for small, unrecognized and even animated films! Really appreciate it when I can follow someone not just for reviews for block busters but also for other non main stream films! keep up the great work Grace!!!
Guessed who it was 10 mins in and ill tell ya how.... gotta see who is the same size and build as batman. Jack had to be someone who physically had an impact and was as tall or taller than Bruce wayne. Only 2 ppl fit that bill and one is a redharring. I apply that formula to all batman " who done its" and as long as it aint a asspull it works. Also it has to be a shocker so least person youd expect. I figured as far as build/heigh and shock value it could only be one person. To be fair...i was giddy when i found i was right.
I just watched this for the first time last night, and I found myself enjoying it. But I am going to have to wholeheartedly disagree with you about the graphic novel. I've been a fan of that book since it came out, and I find it magnificent. The second story, Master of the Future, was a separate sequel book, and not nearly as good. Also, for me, I much prefer who Jack turns out to be in the book.
I absolutely agree in regards to animation quality. I don't mind paying a bit extra to get a better animated film. I mean, did anyone noticed the animation of Pamela's dancing? felt like few frames reused again and again.
@BeyondTheTrailer Hey Grace if you remember that's not the 1st time Bruce Greenwood voices Batman/Bruce Wayne..... He also did it in Batman: Under The Red Hood film!!!!
Felt pretty "meh". The novelty of seeing a Victorian era version of the characters (as cameos mostly), was kinda cute. And I admit that reveal in the end was kind of "whoa". But I feel it fails as a mystery movie because there was no clever lead up, and barely any clues that pointed to the right direction. Save for that one clue involving a pin, everything was vague and bland. Fun, i guess. But mostly bland.
Grace this movie was incredible. And I don’t use that term loosely. There are very few movies that have actually awed me recently, but this one was astounding. It was atmospheric, beautiful, witty and clever and the term organic is absolutely correct. I agree on the points many have raised with regards to animation, but the character designs are phenomenal and I totally forgive dips in quality for excellent voice performances and a truly special story. Well done DC, regained my trust :)
I'll have to check this out, I liked a lot of Justice League Dark. Also this reminds a bit of the 1979 movie 'Time After Time' , where Jack The Ripper is a friend of an unsuspecting HG Wells and steals his time machine forcing Wells to pursue him into the future (the movie is based on a sci fi novel of the same name and they recently tried to make a tv series out if it but it failed).
DC’s Elseworld stories are so unique from any other comic book property; I really do hope they develop them into live action. Ps: I guess you could consider it a DC Elseworld series, but I am totally in love with as a guilty pleasure with DC Bombshell lately, which the aesthetics alone of the characters are captivating.
Better visual animation would mean more time and resources. DC's moneybags probably weigh how much they profit from these projects versus what they put into it. They would probably make as much money regardless of visuals, so that's where they cut. More effort seems to go into how it sounds. Particularly their voice over work.
I'm not going to fault the original Gotham by Gaslight for being less than its adaptation. GBG was the first Elseworlds story, and is perhaps, more interested in exploring the concept of Batman vs Jack the Ripper than making full use of the material available to it. Of course, the likely suspect is no real mystery to us, and I'm glad the adaptation takes things in an unexpected direction. I would expect the writing out of DC animation to be pretty damn good by now, and I would be disappointed if that weren't the case.
Just finished it, and I gotta say, haunting is definitely the right word. I may have enjoyed the movie a little /too/ much... If only the live action films were up to par.
Glad I wasn't the only one who went out and brought the graphic nova; straight after watching Gotham by Gaslight. Really enjoyed this movie although agree a longer version would have been nice.
I thought it was muddy animation too.. but I still really like a lot of the stories the animated department of DC. Granted at least here the suffragage and misogyny was story needed. Carpemter's Selena reminded me A LOT of Dana Dalaney's Josephine character from Tombstone, And that is a great thing!! I still wish and hope that we'll get a live action story as good and as well executed as some of the Animated stories have been.
I liked the movie and thought the animation was fine but not very picky with art. The reveal of The Butcher was rather shocking and the final scene before credits was truly disturbing but in a good way. I wonder if that would happen....
I respect and even love the source material. I remember buying the GN when it first came out but I think they dropped the ball in several areas with this, from the voice direction to the art and overall cheapness of this one, which could have been overcome with clever art direction. They really dropped the ball most of all with the story and how to tell it here. Glad to hear I’m not the only one that zoned out while watching this, which is a rarity for me! I did enjoy it and liked the changes but it still felt like a plateau of the the decline of WB’s animated film quality. Here’s hoping the Suicide Squad film doesn’t disappoint!
I usually can't decide whether DC Animated cares or doesn't care what it's doing because the animation is low quality and the script is low hanging fruit but some of the themes are very mature
Totally agree with the animation being too weak to justify! This is one of the main reasons I don’t purchase their animated movies anymore. The other being the sometimes overly boring story telling. I now wait for reviews like yours to see if it’s worth the time. Might check it out!?
I wonder if this poor animation quality is a result of the shakeup going on at Warner Brothers. 'Cause I believe now the head of home entertainment is also in charge of the theatrical division, so perhaps now we can get better quality animated movies in the future. They might have been under contract or something to make this film, so despite everything they had to get it done and released it whether the quality was good or not. But I'm really hoping for some changes over there in terms of animation quality, and maybe DC can learn a thing or two from Marvel after the Miles Morales movie comes out.
I enjoyed the comic and the movie equally. Plus I got mine for $8.00 but it's a physical copy. I think with the comic they were too afraid of putting a known character on the cutting block as Jack, so they made a new character for it. As for the art, I think not only was it during a time when art styles all looked the same but nobody expected much from comics. Also the animation in the movie was not only a low budget but a slight callback to the animated series.
I have not yet read the comic but am looking forward to reading it after seeing the movie. Is it very different? And you know you're right the animation does have a similar feel to it as the animated series, maybe that is why I liked it so much.
Some animation cuts looked really beautiful and the fight choreography was nice, but yeah other than that DC really needs to step up in the animation. The ending was a bit underwhelming but still this movie was great.
I think both this and The Killing Joke (among other issues) where drawn in ways that need the time and money to adapt that they just aren't being given.
The story and direction are definitely a step-up from the previous two Batman movies (Harley Quinn was almost on par with Batman and Robin in breaking the spirit of Batfans :|) But I agree, the animation is really getting awful and simplistic for a world that could have been so much richer.
I just want to know who Jack the Ripper is is in this movie. I have to know! My guess, because of the fact that you said that people wouldn't be happy about it, would be Alfred or Commissioner Gordon, but I don't know.
No, I think that Joker is just too obvious, and I don't think that he's in the movie from the reviews I've read and watched. But maybe he is. EDIT: Grace replied to someone else's comment and said that the Ripper isn't Joker; thank goodness.
Just watched the sneak peek and I must say the arts pretty nice- I like the it! that's actually one of the things that I always liked about DC movies was the art; flashpoint and Justice League movies they all have pretty good art. The art here in this movie it's not bad it's different from the previous art in most of the DC movies but I like it too. I think maybe you should give it another look Grace.
I did like this movie but it could have been better. Since i cant draw a straight line with a ruler i will leave the animation alone, which i thought was ok. As far as the story, i loved the original comic and is one of the few i have kept and read multiple times. The twist didnt bother me as much as i thought it should but i preferred the ripper that was Jack the Ripper from London, where this one seemed that the ripper was a gotham criminal alone and no ties with the actual Ripper from england. I did love all the different uses for Batman characters. I would have preferred they introduced multiple new characters and made one of them the ripper instead if making a current batman character the ripper or they could have him be nobody just a background character barely scene and never focused on. Also the motivations for the ripper dont mesh well his actions. For example antagonizing the police and either eating or at the very least just talking about cannabilism would not go along with the beliefs of the ripper. So the story felt a little, not rushed but underdeveloped. They could have done so much more and made a longer and more suspensful movie. All in all it wasn't bad but left a lot to be desired.
I liked the animation it reminded me of batman the animated series, i grew up watching that show. The audience who started watching DC animation are now adults so that's why they are targeting both audience.
You are so right i too grew up watching the animated series, and maybe that is why I enjoyed this movie so much, it has the same feel to it. And don;t you think the animated series still holds up 25 years later.
Yeah, man i told my nephew to watch it one day and realized its still the best, i saw couple of episodes with him. I think its one of the best tv shows of all time, not just animation.
I think the art in this is for the kids that can sneakily watch this without anyone finding out. It's fine to make a movie like that from time to time, but they can't keep doing it
To me, it was pretty obvious that this is a film for adults adults. I don’t think the animation isn’t bad either. I also thought it was fairly new obvious who the killer was. His physique and eyes gave it away. I didn’t really mind, though.
Grace, and everyone else, I am just so frustrated and confused as to why most anime has the budget or talent to create amazing animation. For this reason, why couldn’t DC have the means or budget to create equally stunning animation for their films as of late? I love love DC and only want them to succeed but I would also love for them to create animation that is worthy of the DC mythos
I quite liked the movie but the reveal of The Ripper was ridiculous. I guessed it from the start but then there was a scene with the Ripper's secret identity that makes the reveal make no sense.
if it turns out that the Jack is another man that would just be a cliche batman, that twist was the best part of it, all along the movie we thought Gordon as the usual Gordon the police commissioner but no he has his twisted thoughts of how justice and cleansing must be made... that was a perfect opposite for both of Batman/Bruce Wayned vs Gordon / The Ripper
The animation style in other Dc animated movies is a copy of the new 52 in the DC comics so, a similar animation style to Batman the animated series from the 90's is very apreciated. It is kinda funny to hear that the animation in this movie is cheap when this video looks like a Powerpoint presentation.
I have a problem with that reveal. I mean whenever i think of that character, i imagine Bob Hastings voice or even Gary Oldman's face... And then this happened. I mean i still like the movie, maybe i just need some time to get over it
Grace! I just recently played the Batman Telltale Series (it recently went free on PlayStation) and I think you would really enjoy the story. It's available on mobile devices if you don't want to play on a console, but I'd love to see your thoughts on this great Elseworlds story!
Honestly, it's just a children's movie playing grown up. There was so much that the movie decided to explain even though the answers were already apparent.
I sadly don’t think I’ll ever get around to watching this or reading the graphic novel for that matter. But I’m still wanna know who Jack the Ripper turns out to be. I think it would be Tommy Elliot(Hush) as he’s a surgeon I think. If someone doesn’t mind ruining it please could you tell me who it turns out to be?
Grace, I'm wondering if DC spends little on the animation to maintain a hefty profit. Not sure what the numbers are on these, but they must be airtight cuz they keep making them!
Another excellent review. I have not seen this yet, but will soon, based on your review. I am a fan of DC and animation. Most of the justice league movies were good, some excellent. In any case if you want to see an animated superhero movie what choice have you got?
Grace given your negative feelings on the current movies in production where the plot centers around famous serial killers I am shocked to hear how much you are into the setting of this movie. What sets apart the Jack the Ripper murders from those of say HH Holms or Charles Manson? Why is this not glorifying those murders? Tuning the real life serial killer into a Batman villain seems to be just a glorifying given that Batman villains are super famous and popular.
I’ve thought that the DC animation has been poor for a long time!! I watch the DC animation film, & I own them all, but I haven’t been impressed since Gotham Knight.
i absolutely loved gotham by gaslight. dc needs to do more, i loved justice league dark and i hope marvel will do this too because i find cartoon or animation in general can be better and more true to comics than live action. besides the loved triangle twist in the killing joke i also thought that was one of dc's best besides flashpoint paradox. love you videos! keep it up :P
This movie is a mixed bag for me, kinda leaning more towards negative views. *Most redeeming part:* the little Robins. *Standout bad part:* the awful dialogue cuts.
I loved this movie I thought it was great and kept me entertained. I love elseworld stories. And tbh the quality of animation never bothers me as long as the story is good - which this is
same here i loved it to. so many people whining about animation quality when they cant produce anything better. Then they say " not my job to " k well, dont spend your money.
Yeah... sadly the animation is getting cheaper and cheaper in them DC animated films.
alxandra74
Funny you should say that...🤔
Check the end credits of the movie and see who does the animation....
It's still better than the flashpoint paradox's animation.
and they are getting worse and worse. I dont know why, since they began adapting the new 52 I have not liked a single of their movies
Timeyin Sholaye good for you, stop watching the movies then
I really enjoyed it. Also loved the twist on who Jack the Ripper was.
Michael Ortiz I picked the obvious choice I was wrong.
Michael Ortiz *cough* *cough* Gordon *cough*
The twist i did not see coming but that is why I love the Elseworld stories.
I hope Alfred turns out to be the culprit just so I can say “the butler did it”
It's an overused cliche.
It was definitely better than I thought.
I wasn;t sure what to expect but it was very enjoyable, something different you know.
this is one of the best DC animated movies I've seen in the last 5 yrs . The story was really well done, you quickly forget about the limited animation. Kept you guessing till the end. Who ever wrote this screenplay did an amazing job
Didn’t expect this for today!! Definitely agree about the animation being cheap, I would get glimpses of a 2005 Cartoon lol. To be accurate it reminds me of the animation in the Spectacular Spider-Man Cartoon series.
zombiekiller9503 well its done by the same designer
You forget that show was awesome and amazing. Even with bad animation I didn't think it was that bad. I have seen worse
True need better animation
hope they do that with the superman movie
Mark N what superman movie?
12 a.m.: I guess it's time for bed
Grace posts a review: Welp never mind
If the animation looked like a tenth of that comic book cover, I'd have already watched it and recommended it to fans of more adult animated fare.
Side note, but thanks for working so hard Grace!! You’re always up so late for us 😁❤️
This came out???? 😵
Don't worry Grace Batman Ninja will be your visual saving grace.
After two animated trash releases DC finally put out another good one. Thank goodness. Now lets see what happens with Batman Ninja.
that's done by a Japanese studio so who knows. It's a wild card
HarleyxJoker FOREVER batman ninja gon suck
Finally Bruce Timm did something right for once. Movie had some flaws but it good all the same. Now all we need is a Rated R animated DC story of The Creeper (jack Ryder),Plastic man or The Mask(Dark horse comic). Also it would be awesome if Bruce Timm and Paul Dini went back and worked on Freakazoid like they originally wanted him to be like, but unfortunately it will never happen.
Rated R Plastic Man?! Why?! That makes no sense. I understand R rated Deathsroke or Creeper, but not Plastic Man!
Their version of Freakazoid got refit into their version of The Creeper
This movie was by Sam Liu, not Bruce Timm. Probably the reason why this actually turned out to be good.
Bruce Tim wasn't in this one actually
Bruce Timm produced the movie, just like he did with the majority of the animated movies. The New 52 movies are the ones he doesn't produce. And he actually did one of the voices.
Also, he made two bad movies and suddenly everything he does is crap?

I'm with you i didn't have a problem with the art at all, and really it was the story that took center stage for me.
Has anyone seen George Cukor's Gaslight (1944). It's a good one (unrelated to this film. I just brought it up because of the name)
Yes. Nice movie, by the way.
Also, I just happened to be lucky enough to watch the movie before I've heard the term "gaslighting". So the mystery worked for me, which was a bonus.
I still love the fantastic art by Mike mignola in the comic though
Hi Grace, what elseworlds comics would you like to see animated next? I'd like to see Kingdom Come, The Nail, Batman Vampire or Red Son.
Twist really got me off guard, it’s clear that they were willing to try and trick us into thinking Jack’s identity was someone else
Guessed who it was 10 mins in and ill tell ya how.... gotta see who is the same size and build as batman. Jack had to be someone who physically had an impact and was as tall or taller than Bruce wayne. Only 2 ppl fit that bill and one is a redharring. I figured as far as build/heigh and shock value it could only be one person. To be fair...i was giddy when i found i was right.

God Grace, don’t remind me of the Killing Joke animated movie... That shit was traumatic.
Good to see that everyone is pretending that the Batman and Harley Quinn movie doesn't exist though
Only the first 30 min
If The Killing Joke traumatised you then Batman and Harley Quinn will send you into cardiac arrest
grippingrope99 Lmao, that’s why I haven’t watched it!
@BeyondTheTrailer Hey Grace if you remember that's not the 1st time Bruce Greenwood voices Batman/Bruce Wayne..... He also did it in Batman: Under The Red Hood film!!!!
Imagine if any of these DC animated films looked anywhere near as amazing as any of the shorts in Gotham Knight.

Can they make The Long Halloween animated movie
There has been rumors of that for a long time, that would be great to see.
I’ve got good news
I'll have to check this out, I liked a lot of Justice League Dark. I've avoided the prologue in Killing Joke. I watch only the adaptation of the graphic novel and I really like it
I got the comic used for 5 dollars. I have always loved it, but it is very bare bones. This review has me excited to see the expanded parts now!
I wonder if this poor animation quality is a result of the shakeup going on at Warner Brothers. Thanks much for the review. Sounds like enough good things (story, atmosphere, action choreo), to still check it out.
I'm with you I was shoked that Jack was who it was but it makes me feel better that I found out that it was diffrent then the GN
I just want to know who Jack the Ripper is is in this movie. I have to know! My guess, because of the fact that you said that people wouldn't be happy about it, would be Alfred or Commissioner Gordon, but I don't know.

That’s weird cause yesterday I watched my first DC animated movie ever, Batman Under The Red Hood
Oh yes! Thank you for this! Thank you for speaking up on cheap animation. So many cut corners on the animation!
Just watched the sneak peek and I must say the arts pretty nice- I like the it! that's actually one of the things that I always liked about DC movies was the art; flashpoint and Justice League movies they all have pretty good art. Watched it, it had extremely slow moments but overall it was decent I'll remember the movie for sure but probably won't re-watch it
The comic book was better. Even though I did like the movie. I recommend the book. It also has a different ending.
Totally agree, some of the story lines are so original and executed so well.
Everyone complains about Killing Joke the film yes the prolog was pointless but the rest of the movie was totally faithful too the graphic novel
Great review Grace! Think I'll give it a shot. Wish I could rent it though..
I quite liked the movie but the reveal of The Ripper was ridiculous. I guessed it from the start but then there was a scene with the Ripper's secret identity that makes the reveal make no sense.
I just bought all of the young justice animated seasons and the animation is great!! I watched the trailer for this and I'll wait!! .until it's free!
I loved the movie and the the twist at the ened really had me shocked
That twist was awful and forced like the Mandarin in Iron Man 3 and Agent Whiskey in Kingsman 2.
The twist was an absolute highlight of the movie.
if it turns out that the Jack is another man that would just be a cliche batman, that twist was the best part of it, all along the movie we thought Gordon as the usual Gordon the police commissioner but no he has his twisted thoughts of how justice and cleansing must be made... that was a perfect opposite for both of Batman/Bruce Wayned vs Gordon / The Ripper
It's always a bummer when cool ideas are hindered by bad animation.
Javier Marmol the animation was fine reminded me of animated series
IamMrRice the art was great but the animation was choppy
Joe Worpole concept art is almost always better.
Javier Marmol I’m not talking about concept art I’m talking about the art style used, I lived it but the animation was choppy.
Joe Worpole oh ok. I get you.
I mean i still like the movie, maybe i just need some time to get over it
The scene with the cup of Tea/Coffe spoiled me the twist ;-)
Sadly the mystery is very easy to solve after 20 minute's.
Grace! I just recently played the Batman Telltale Series (it recently went free on PlayStation) and I think you would really enjoy the story. It's available on mobile devices if you don't want to play on a console, but I'd love to see your thoughts on this great Elseworlds story!
This was a good movie. The twist was appreciated because they definitely had me thinking it was someone else.
If someone doesn’t mind ruining it please could you tell me who it turns out to be?
samlikesfilms commissioner Godan
I think the animation looks great. I'd say its like a combination of classic disney and spectacular spiderman animation.
Grace, I'm wondering if DC spends little on the animation to maintain a hefty profit. Not sure what the numbers are on these, but they must be airtight cuz they keep making them!
I'll check this out. Looking more forward to the Batman Ninja movie though. That animation looks off the chart
Where would this rank for you Grace?
I loved this movie. The animation was solid and the characters dialogue was good.
Jennifer Carpenter always does a great job whenever she voices a character
I’ve thought that the DC animation has been poor for a long time!!
I watch the DC animation film, & I own them all, but I haven’t been impressed since Gotham Knight.
Did not see that twist at the end coming.
Loved how it touched on some deep themes...
i absolutely loved gotham by gaslight. dc needs to do more, i loved justice league dark and i hope marvel will do this too because i find cartoon or animation in general can be better and more true to comics than live action. besides the loved triangle twist in the killing joke i also thought that was one of dc's best besides flashpoint paradox. love you videos! keep it up :P
I thought Jack was going 2 be Hush, Professor Pyg, or Clayface due 2 the similar MO
I just saw the LA premiere of it tonight it was okay it had its moments but some parts manly the humor and references just hit the mark for me
The plot twist of who the killer is truly surprised me though
Yes catching the references were great. How did you get into the premiere of it that is awesome!
Thank you for reviewing this. I'm also a fan of the victorian era and batman. I'll have to buy this soon.
The animation was pretty bad at times. I couldn't believe that no one either noticed, or bothered to fix Selena's obvious derpy eyes in a few scenes.
This movie is a mixed bag for me, kinda leaning more towards negative views.
*Most redeeming part:* the little Robins.
*Standout bad part:* the awful dialogue cuts.
The animation does look stickman-like...but the story based on the comic, is really good. Too bad.
I'm going to be way more invested in Batman Ninja, The pacing in the movie was weird, I found myself so bored.
We need to see more Batman and his robin(s) movies!
I loved this movie I thought it was great and kept me entertained. I love elseworld stories. And tbh the quality of animation never bothers me as long as the story is good - which this is
Loved this movie!!!
same here i loved it to. so many people whining about animation quality when they cant produce anything better. Then they say " not my job to " k well, dont spend your money.
Grace if you want a 2 1/2 hour film watch the dark Knight returns deluxe edition, you'd love it if you haven't seen it.
