I love Batman gotham by gaslight this movie is so criminally underrated and it's in my top 10 favorite best Batman animated movies I love the mystery involving Batman up against Jack the reaper is so engaging and fun it earns that R Rated
DUDE I just saw this for the first time and it might be in my top five. There’s just so many damn good Batman animated movies, lol. But this one seems to very seamlessly weave all of my favorite characters and story elements together. And it’s FUCKIN GRISLY! I was watching it, and I asked myself, “Is this R-rated?” And a few minutes later I was like “YUP THIS IS RATED R HOOO BOY”. I mean you can’t really make a PG-13 story about Jack the Ripper; that’s like an oxymoron.
@@laurelsilberman5705 I got the movie on DVD and I love the movie from the third time I see it I love seeing a more human Batman and the Victoria era see him go to toe with Jack the reaper was awesome and I was a shocked to find out Jim Gordon was the villain of the story it was something new and fresh I've never seen before because we used to Batman and Jim Gordon being long time allies and best friends and being close like brothers seeing them to fighting against each other and the final climax was a huge surprise and a shocker to me
@@2jebeal I KNOW, they really successfully pulled one over on us, the viewer not only by effectively misleading us with Harvey, but by relying on our trust of Gordon as a semi- universal constant, if you will. He’s “THE MORALLY INCORRUPTIBLE JIM GORDON”! I remember halfway through when Bruce is being framed and I was 90% sure it had be Harvey, like around when Bruce is put behind bars but before Selina comes to visit him, I remember thinking to myself, “It’s not going to be somebody we haven’t seen yet, it’s gotta be Harvey, right? Who else could there be?” And I thought of other characters we’ve even seen on screen, and I STILL scanned right past Gordon BECAUSE he’s Gordon.
@@2jebeal And I just left a whole love letter myself in the comments section about how emotionally actualized both Bruce, and Selina especially, are depicted in this film, haha, because that is definitely a highlight of the movie. They kept the list of characters really tight, (I think in part due to budgetary reasons; Vee Infuso has a good video essay about this movie that talks about how they spent their money where it needed to go, like in the voice casting, background sets, etc, and did some things that aren’t too distracting if you don’t pay attention too hard. I think the extremely small list of characters was part of this is what I’m saying) but in general spent the time with primarily those two as main characters, and even put in the emotional beats to have the Bat Family coming together at the end with Alfred, “Dickie,” Jason, and Tim actually payoff. I definitely had a major “Aww, look at this little family that just kind of came together so perfectly!” And it was a relatively satisfying ending after such a dark tale.
@@laurelsilberman5705 you should know that there was a video game supposed to come out based on Gotham by gaslight I saw the gameplay video on RUclips but they're scrapped it man would it be awesome to play that video game and you know I can see them do a live action movie based on it I can see Ben Affleck coming back to play this version of Batman and they alternate universe I mean he has the body type for the Gotham by gaslight version so they can make it work it is a elseworld story
Honestly I would love to see more of Gotham by Gaslight world. I've always wanted to see Joker running a Victorian era circus slash evil gang. You can even add other DC heros to this type of setting.
I could absolutely see the Gotham by Gaslight version of Harvey dent being this world version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Throw in Sherlock Holmes and a couple other Victorian era fictional characters and you got yourself an interesting time
@@Moracher I think Sherlock Holmes would've been mentioned in this setting if he had trained Batman. I could imagine that Batman is the Gaslight version of Sherlock, as both Batman and Holmes are considered "worlds greatest detective" and Gaslight Batman is set in the same time frame that Sherlock Holmes is. Also, I can't find anything relating to Houdini training Sherlock nor Batman, can you give me some link or something I'm starting to feel insane with my search history being variations of "Batman trained by houdini?" and "Sherlock Holmes trained by houdini?".
@@lydiatosh6475 at the end of the movie he says "I payed Houdini (some amount of money) for that trick." And as for Sherlock there is another comic set in Gaslight with Sherlock and Batman. Though that comic could've been just set in the same time frame.
I've always said that this movie should get a sequel. It was such a good setting and had one of my favorite Catwoman origin stories. Her origin as the daughter of a lion tamer was a lot more inspired than a lot of other versions of her past (like how ever since Year One people only use the dominatrix prostitute origin, which I've always thought was more out of fanservice than exploring the psychology of Selina). The Bruce/Selina chemistry was great. I liked the artstyle, it was very reminiscent of the Batman. Plus I loved the depiction of the Robin gang and the way the ending implied Bruce, Selina, and the Robins would become a team. In my opinion the movie lived up to and expanded on the source material really well.
There is technically a sequel in the form of a elseworld graphic novel called Batman: Houdini. The writer of that story considers it a part of the same continuity, anyway.
You know characters like Catwoman Don't really need origins Like you're really she's just a thief of a gimmick her becoming Catwoman Seems like a joke About cat burglars that she just ran with
Gaslight Joker has a cool story behind his permanent smile the rest isn't that great thou. Like the rest of the original comic the Movie vastly improved over. I would love to see an improved Gaslight Joker that mysteries like a Joker should be. And not after money like in the comic. The sequel should also setup Gaslight Hush for the next movie like the first should have. And Lucius Fox should be introduce bring up some of the racisms of the time. And build Bruce a steampunk Bat Computer.
Thank you, for making this video because I thought I was the only one that believed Gotham By Gaslight was one of the best DC animated films we've ever gotten. Criminally underrated. Fun fact: Grey De-Lisle is the one singing Selina Kyle's musical number in the film.
I had not read the comic the first time I watched this movie, so I didn't know how different it was. But with that aside, I also never saw the Jim Gordon twist coming. Ironically, I DID suspect Alfred at one point because of "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader". I just had a gut-feeling that a normally-good character was the Ripper, and there was precedent for Alfred leading a double-life as one of Batman's villains (albeit, in a completely different manner than what happened here). I thought Harvey and Hugo were TOO obvious, so dismissed them. For the majority of the film, I suspected Bullock. I was shocked by the reveal, and I loved it. That is why I adore Elseworlds stories. They can play with established norms and make you feel safe, then rip the floor out from under you. And that's great. They're not tied to maintaining the status quo.
The only reason I thought it was Hugo was because he was the only character that was a doctor. The real ripper was a barber and they would also bloodlet as well as cut hair.
DUDE I watched the first half of your video where you talked a little bit about how different this movie is from the comic, (and I own it as part of the 18-film collection, but haven’t seen it before), so I stopped your video before any major spoilers, bought the comic, read it, then watched the movie, and OH DAMN. ITS ONE OF THE BEST BATMAN MOVIES I’VE EVER SEEN. And now I’m back to restart your video from the beginning and appreciate it in full with all the knowledge of both iterations of the story. I fucking loved the emotional maturity of this take on both Batman and Catwoman especially. Selina’s chemistry with Bruce writes itself with backstories like theirs, and their naturally aligning morals. Not to mention how talented, fearless, and resourceful Selina gets to be in this movie. She’s literally the only victim of a deranged serial killer who actually survived being targeted by him. She had Batman’s help, obviously, but she participated heavily in her own survival by even figuring out a way to BAT SIGNAL BRUCE FROM HER LOCATION before the Bat Signal was a thing. And she thought that up on the fly, drugged, relying on her knowledge of lights from showbiz probably. She’s just so cool and very actualized as a character and not just a romantic interest plot point. She actually saves Bruce’s ass at the peak of the second act! AND THE RIPPER TWIST!!! It’s so good! They did a perfect job of misleading us as viewers.
i love that Bruce Greenwood can change his accent very quickly especially as Bruce Wayne (in the movie he does this Irish accent while escaping from prison and in young justice he does a Scottish accent)
Honestly, it would've been difficult to make a full-length feature from the original comic book story, as it is rather brief. That's why elements of Gotham By Gaslight's follow-up (such as the Gotham World's Fair and the blimp) were included in the animated film, as well as the several Victorian Era versions of Batman's supporting players and rogue's gallery that didn't appear in the comics.
The fact he admits he goes to the movie theater alone both makes me chuckle with the way he said it but also makes me sad 🤣. Also, this movie is great!
I’m glad you change your mind on Bruce Greenwood, I personally feels every role he’s in he always delivers I’m surprised he’s not in the MCU or The DCU. He was awesome in Red Hood. “This Doesn’t Change Anything, it doesn’t change Anything At All” that line always gets me besides the “this is the best day of my life!” Line
I really enjoyed the Gotham by Gaslight comic book so and I found out there is going be a animated adaptation, I was excited to say the least. Was I a little bummed out that they didn't stay more faithful to the story material, yes. But over all I still enjoyed it immensely
I think Jim Gordan damaging his wife face and her going crazy could be the Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn likes a crazy person, gets damaged by that crazy person which sends her into being more of a crazy person that becomes really devoted to him, it is implied or maybe directly stated that Harley and Joker do/did it. Tho that's probably just me, if they went more well brutal with her face I would have said two face. Also Gotham by Gaslighting
I'm not a huge comics guy and haven't read GbG, but I do have a soft spot for Elseworlds-type stories and really liked this movie for all the reasons you mentioned. Everything and everyone is essentially the same, but just different enough to fit the time period. I also appreciated the fact that (SLIGHT SPOILER) they didn't try to crowbar the Joker into the story.
To be honest I watched "Batman: Gotham By Gaslight" when it was released and I would have probably loved it IF that were my first introduction to this version of Batman, sadly that isn't the case I read the source material (the very first elseworlds story {and still my favorite of these alternate versions followed by Kal the medieval era Superman story) even before the line was called that) and as a result I could not enjoy this film. When I read the story I loved that the various supporting characters were not in the story it made the mystery of who was "Jack" far more interesting. Perhaps were I able to go back and rewatch it knowing i is nothing like its source material maybe I might be able to find something worthwhile within it.
I think Commissioner Gordon's wife is supposed to be Evelyn Dent- aka Three-Face. she pops up here and there in elseworlds-type stories, and she is usually a redhead, with much less severe facial scarring than Harvey. Also, in her most famous iteration (the closest Duela Dent ever gets to a "true mom"), she is/was in love with her universe's Joker, the Jokester, whose civilian name is Jack. ....make of that whatever you will.
I actually thought that she was jack and that her husband knew. I thought they were going for her character to be like flashpoint Marta Wayne (Bruce dies, his mom becomes the joker).
I worked it out that Gordon was the Ripper pretty early on in the film. Which was used as shock value, when really it was pretty obvious. As the old saying goes it's always the one least expect.
Batman usually is grouped with Superhero, but the truth is that hes just as/if not more comparable with the great detectives of the Victorian/Edwardian and Noir eras. I'd like to see him crossed over with people like Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown, Dick Tracy, etc
Only complaint I have with this design for Batman is I wish they gave him goggles. I know that could look too steampunk, but seeing so much of his eyes just looks a tad goofy in my opinion
It also shows Gordon scarred by his service as a surgeon during the Civil War. He was forced to work on thousands of wounded men in the bloodiest day in America's history. Also of note, the other photographs with him, showing wounded soldiers are copied from historical photographs from the war.
I like that it’s not an adaptation of the comic and it just takes its premise, I like that more in the DC animated movies because it does it’s own thing and gives you a reason to watch and read both to see what’s different and what’s original
the greatest stories tend to be composed of fragments of other just rearranged. i have a feeling reality may work in a similar fasion based in collective as well as personal memory
That reveal caught me off guard too. I was DEADASS expecting for it to be Harvey Dent. (Also I fangirled seeing Dick, Jason, and Tim. Add in Damian and it would be seriously awesome for me)
Your Batman reviews are very sharp and to the point. This sounds like a cool story I'll definitely check out! I can tell the story definitely surprised you! I'd like to hear more about the comic too sure! Gotham by Gaslighting!
Gordon absolutely stole the show in the final act. Even Bruce Greenwood's pitch perfect Batman was overshadowed by the sheer insanity that Scott Patterson delivered with every line. There are hints that Gordon knows that he's evil when he says "Oh the nuns beat that wickedness out of me. Always use my right. Except for Jack's work!" This actually makes him even more terrifying because he knows that what he's doing is wicked and he does it anyway. Even more chillingly, his final line in the movie strongly implies that he believes he's going to Hell because while the ferris wheel is burning all around him and Batman, he roars "This is where we belong!" And when he steps willingly into the fires of Hell and burns alive, his agonised scream sounds like he could be laughing or crying. He's not the real James Gordon but I don't care because he's bloody GLORIOUS in his own right.
I never read the comic, but I greatly enjoyed Gotham by Gaslighting. If anything, learning that the movie isn't very faithful only makes me want to actually read the comic
I can't be the only one who LOVES the fight scenes in this movie. IMO nothing can top the Warehouse scene in BvS, but dang... The fights in this movie feels so raw, like you can feel the impact of each punches because pretty sure at this time. Boxing was like the only martial art out there. Like the fight at the Ferris Wheel in the end was awesome!
I loved this Batman Gotham By Gaslight movie! It was like a Sherlock Holmes type of Batman and the characters too. Only problem is how this version of James Gordon turned out to be The Ripper and it really should've been someone else.
One thing I'd change about this film: have Pamela & Selina switch places. Kyle is now the murdered stripper & Isley the love interest/fellow vigilante. Pam wields a handheld crossbow, eluding to her TAS incarnation. Now, before you call bullshit, just remember that, in Poison Ivy's early stories from the comics, she had a romantic infatuation towards Bats, basically being a stalker. Obviously, this go around, the feeling is way more mutual. I think it works better because it leans into the nature of Elseworlds storytelling, how they subvert our expectations. Plus, Catwoman really doesn't need to be the romantic lead for the quadrillionth time. Come on. Also, if you remember, in Poison Ivy's debut episode of BTAS she tried to assassinate Harvey Dent, but in this story HE's the bastard & SHE's innocent. I like that reversal.
My Biggest complaint is that it's only one movie and not a mini series. My second biggest complaint is that Harvey Dent should have been replaced with Thomas Elliot. With Harvey being introduced as the lawyer Thomas hirers to convince the court Bruce Wayne is Jack the Ripper. And not setting up a sequel about Gaslight Batman going against Gaslight Hush. I really want a Gaslight Hush he would be so cool.
I just recently read the comic by mike mignola and its sequel, which are both great quick reads that are highly praised for not using preexisting villains like the joker or the penguin but creating new ones. I was actually afraid when reading the book , because I got spoilered from the movie hiwever I was glad to see that it was veyr different
This made me thing up of a storyline. "THE CURSE OF THE BAT ". What if the waynes were cursed long ago due to the actions of Bruces ancestor (maybe great great grandfather) by some evil bat themed entity, every generations first born wayne will experience loss in a way that drives them to don a cowl (indirectly and unknowingly worshipping that entity and giving that entity power). Every person he hurts while wearing the bat cowl is like an unknowing sacrifice made in favor of the entity. Would be a cool new supernatural villain for batman to go up against, ending the Wayne curse, and then finally deciding to be Batman of his own will.
Gotham by Gaslighting - I'm old enough to have read the o.g. graphic novel on its release but I do not remember it. Other than accidentally spoiling this movie for myself I'll be watching it...even though I know how it ends.
Man I wish marvel did more movies like this. Animated else world story’s are just so cool to me an imagine that for old man Logan, or maybe Spider-Man review your vows. Those are perfect story’s to adapt adapt into animation.
I liked this movie, but I feel like there were some flaws that worsened the experience to me:for example,I feel like the plot point "the police is looking for Batman because they suspect him of a crime he didn't commit" is way overused at this point, sure,it was a cool idea to make so that both Batman and Bruce are suspects, but I feel like Bruce's evasion created a plot hole:before the final fight,Gordon says that him killing Selina will exonerate Bruce, which would be true if Bruce was still in prison, which he wasn't. I feel like it would be pretty hard to explain that the apparently good and honorable commissioner Gordon committed all those crimes after his death,I think that it would look like Bruce broke out of prison and killed him,as Selina wasn't taken seriously as a witness during the first trial and so wouldn't be able to testify in Bruce's favor.
My only nit pick for this movie is the cowl, the cut out for his eyes are way too wide and revealing, it would been cool if he used black eye paint, would have been the first animated batman to have it and it would have worked for the time period.
This movie was Dope loved that everyone was in it but just different fro the time line of there origins plus the twist with a real life serial killer was great. I t would be great if they did one like the silence of the lambs using either joker or riddler with the Hannibal lector approach behind bars helping Batman or even nightwing solve the killers identity
Indeed many sleept on this movie.while everyone always talks about under the red hood or dark knight returns movies, wich are great,i think there are other Batman animated movies wich are also great, like this one,or batman year one, batman vs robin or batman hush.oh and lets not forget the 2 part long halloween ones, wich they will sure become classics. 🦇

Only complaint I have with this design for Batman is I wish they gave him goggles. I know that could look too steampunk, but seeing so much of his eyes just looks a tad goofy in my opinion
Besides the whole Victorian theme, I think having Jim Gordon twist as Jack the Ripper is friggin awesome. This movie is great
One thing I appreciated was who the reveal of Jack the Ripper. Watching it I kept thinking “jacks gonna be the joker”
im so glad when mezco revealed the batman figure, im thinking on getting it along with joker, but tbh Mike Mignloa is just built different
Loved the vid Vee! I’ll have to give this one a look. Could we get a Batman bad blood review? Oh and Gotham by Gaslighting!
Add in Damian and it would be seriously awesome for me)
gotham by gaslighting
ayo when Jim was revealed as the ripper that made me sh*t myself
Did a full sit down with this a year ago and I felt robbed of something I never saw
I miss good animated DC movies
Your videos are starting to become a daily need for me to watch
Definitely one of my favorites!!! Heard they were making a game back in the day and it fell through. Such a shame
I love how somebody says holy s*** at the begging then he says this video is not for kids like how can you do that, lol
harvey dent should've been jack the ripper and that could've served as his two face persona, such a missed opportunity bruh
I never read the comic, but I greatly enjoyed Gotham by Gaslighting. If anything, learning that the movie isn't very faithful only makes me want to actually read the comic
I’d love a more in-depth video of Gotham by gaslighting please
I love ur intro “these videos are for Man-children” never thought I’d wear that title like a badge of honor.
Gotham By Gaslighting
I can't be the only one who LOVES the fight scenes in this movie. IMO nothing can top the Warehouse scene in BvS, but dang... The fights in this movie feels so raw, like you can feel the impact of each punches because pretty sure at this time. Boxing was like the only martial art out there. Like the fight at the Ferris Wheel in the end was awesome!
damn it that twist wouldve got me too, kinda wish you hadnt spoiled it but the movie is like 4 years old so i cant be mad about it
With the exception of the Reveal of who Jack the ripper is, I absolutely loved the film and i loved it
Fucking love this film, it’s amazing, so glad to see someone actually talking about I positively
Edit: Gotham by Gaslighting
I loved this Batman Gotham By Gaslight movie! It was like a Sherlock Holmes type of Batman and the characters too. Only problem is how this version of James Gordon turned out to be The Ripper and it really should've been someone else.
Honestly though I didn’t see it coming. Which was probably for the best. Anyone could see it was going to be dent or Hugo if it wasn’t James.
@@excaliburknives3572 Anybody else would've been better than Gordon.
Funny you mention Holmes, as he's mentioned in both the comic and the movie
@@TheBanishedWind I didn't hear them mention Holmes in this movie.
@@gibbs615
Not by name, no.
I loved the comic as a kid so I really hope Vee review's it soon🤣🤟
One thing I'd change about this film:
have Pamela & Selina switch places.
Kyle is now the murdered stripper &
Isley the love interest/fellow vigilante.
Pam wields a handheld crossbow,
eluding to her TAS incarnation.
Now, before you call bullshit, just
remember that, in Poison Ivy's early
stories from the comics, she had a
romantic infatuation towards Bats,
basically being a stalker. Obviously,
this go around, the feeling is way
more mutual. I think it works better
because it leans into the nature of
Elseworlds storytelling, how they
subvert our expectations. Plus,
Catwoman really doesn't need
to be the romantic lead for the
quadrillionth time. Come on.
Also, if you remember, in Poison Ivy's
debut episode of BTAS she tried to
assassinate Harvey Dent, but in this
story HE's the bastard & SHE's innocent.
I like that reversal.
I don't care what people says, this movie and "All Star Superman" are THE BEST DC animated movies of all times.....
Gotham by gaslighting this was a great video as always man
The ending of this movie was a banger . Also "gotham by gaslighting"
The Dexter nod between Gordon and Selena made me smile.
Just finished watching it! I feel like they truly need to make a 2nd or a series that would be epic!
Just wanna take the time to thank vee for working so hard
Finally, I'm so happy someone is talking one of my favorite Batman movies ever.
#GothambyGaslighting
Gotham by Gaslighting - I'm old enough to have read the o.g. graphic novel on its release but I do not remember it. Other than accidentally spoiling this movie for myself I'll be watching it...even though I know how it ends.
Please cover Batman by Gaslighting…….I love the vid and would love to hear your take on the comics.
gotham by gaslighting
You said Grey Delisle's name waaaay wrong. The "s" is silent, so it sounds like "deh-lyle".
Or use her married name, Grey Griffin.
Gotham by Gaslighting
They were also gonna make a game of the same concept, but it was canceled and now I will never be happy
This movie is so great, also the Jack the Ripper twist, was such a shock to me when I first watched the movie, was like huuuuuh?
Gotham by gaslighting
The kid's "holy shit" genuinely made me laugh lol
Gotham by gaslight is awesome it's one of my favorite DC animated films
Vee infuso, love the wrestling content. Would like for you to do a video on Alister Black and The Fiend Bray Wyatt
Man I wish marvel did more movies like this. Animated else world story’s are just so cool to me an imagine that for old man Logan, or maybe Spider-Man review your vows. Those are perfect story’s to adapt adapt into animation.
Gotham by Gaslighting. I haven't read the comic but I'm sure it's good.
I love how catwomans massive bow looks like cat ears on her head
All time favorite Batman animated movie. Would love to see a sequel to this movie.
Those fight seems just sound like another day I'm Gotham
My only nit pick for this movie is the cowl, the cut out for his eyes are way too wide and revealing, it would been cool if he used black eye paint, would have been the first animated batman to have it and it would have worked for the time period.
YES BRO Gotham by gaslight is so good and underrated I thought I was the only one
You got me at Giles as Alfred
Gotham by gaslighting, please!
Gotham by gaslight is such a interesting Batman movie.
I would really love Gotham by gaslighting
LET'S GO #GOTHAMBYGASLIGHTING !!!!
The first watch had me on edge. I've told people this movie was fire.
It got me obsessed with Jack the ripper and I have seen photographs that I really, didn't want to see😂
Watching this while i play DCU online🤙🏼
This movie was Dope loved that everyone was in it but just different fro the time line of there origins plus the twist with a real life serial killer was great. I t would be great if they did one like the silence of the lambs using either joker or riddler with the Hannibal lector approach behind bars helping Batman or even nightwing solve the killers identity
Gotham by Gaslighting!
I found out about it through the RUclipsr Bobatalks and I’ve loved it ever since
To be honest i forgot this existed a few days ago
Indeed many sleept on this movie.while everyone always talks about under the red hood or dark knight returns movies, wich are great,i think there are other Batman animated movies wich are also great, like this one,or batman year one, batman vs robin or batman hush.oh and lets not forget the 2 part long halloween ones, wich they will sure become classics. 🦇
It’s actually insane how many good animated Batman films there are. Even with all the good films though I still don’t think anything has topped mask of the phantasm yet. Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking but I loved that movie
The Long Halloween films were fire hopefully DC can keep up the quality of animated Batman films in the future.
I really loved gbgl the graphic novel and I would really like to see a review of it in other words GOTHAM BY GASLIGHTING
Looking forward to Gotham by Gaslighting...
i would love to read a comic on this movie
My girlfriend and I watched this movie tonight for the first time. Nice to get a review on the same night!
I like the twist of Gordon being the Ripper, but I see him more as a copycat killer, rather than the ACTUAL Jack the Ripper.
Fkin loved this movie. Defo should do the comic review
Gotham from gaslighting
