  • So, this is meant to be the Best of the Best, Canon's premium, and hideously expensive, fast standard zoom lens. Is it all people hoped it would be, or does the emperor, in this case, have no clothes? Let's take a look and see how it performs on both APS-C and full-frame cameras.

    Found this lens for cheap because it had a scratch on the lens, but doesn't affect image quality at all. Quite lucky to be honest. Great Review

    So you pay over double to get the f2.8 version of this lens over the f4 but then all the best images are taken f4 or f5? What’s the point then…

    I think that it would be a good idea to include the settings that you used when you shot your example photos (shutter speed, ISO) to give an idea of the context of the qualities of the lens. Anyway, good video, thanks.

    I can't believe Canon has no shame pricing its upgrades and the price they charge for correcting their more-less "faulty glasses". I can imagine the prices for Canon lenses in 6-10 years. No mortal will be able to get one for sure.

    Great review! If you want the most bang for your buck, you probably should go with the Tamron 24-70 2.8, which isn't quite as sharp as the Canon one, but has IS (and costs about 1k less).

    • @lb7144
      @lb7144 Год назад

      All these years later and even the used Canon 24-70mm runs you a grand. You can get the Tamron at half that price. And it has “IS”. Shaking my head! I just can’t see paying over $1,000 for a used lens.

  • @ianbunch9721

    My thing about this lens vs the 24-105 f4L IS2 and looking through sample photos on Flikr etc, it seems a lot of photos aren't shot at the WOA, most being actually at f/4 or even higher. As I initially was looking for this lens, I found that with the 24-105 version 2's extra 35mm of range, constant f/4 aperture(only a couple stops different from the 2.8), and the Image Stabilizer that allows you to shoot down to 1/20th and still get sharp images, make it a better lens all around, especially if it's your go to lens, which it will be for me.
    I however only am talking about the version 2 of it, the version 1 is very good, but I pre-ordered the 2 just because it was much newer and a better IS system.
    I'd like to know your thoughts Christopher. Thanks!

    so here comes the request...
    could you try to find/rend the 200mm 2.8 L mk i & mkii and make a review on them and speical in a vs with the 135 f2, they look really similar in shape... and have similar cm of depth of field... And also its is the second cheaper L lens after the 70-200 f4 :)
    thanks a lot..
    Keep up :)

  • @RFGfotografie
    @RFGfotografie 2 года назад

    The one thing you really need to watch out for with this lens is the way you make the picture sharp. As it's really sensitive on that subject. Like it focusses truly well on the spot you selected, but if you want to shoot another spot just out of your focussing selecting then the picture fails. Never had this problem before with my cameragear. But it's not a disaster, just something to get used to/.

      i have the f4 lens love it not only you got IS you also have macro if you want it and the photo's are always good like a L lens douse from what i have worked out the f2.8 at 2x the money is like 3-5% sharper

  • @DeyvsonMoutinhoCaliman
    @DeyvsonMoutinhoCaliman 4 года назад

    Mine came in today. It's old and scratched in the front element, but at least I have one and it cost less than half the price. I made some extensive testing and the scratches doesn't appear in the pictures even at 24mm F16, and it also seems to have very good contrast, some say scratches take away contrast more than sharpness. It was either that or the Tamrom 28-75 2.8 new, I guess the Canon version scratched is still better in sharpness, but I didn't test. Still I'm very satisfied, crazy sharp pictures. I took pictures of the sky and walls of different colors, even my computer monitor, if anyone know the best test to see if scratches are affecting image quality I would like to know. I think that from now on I will only buy scratched top of the line lenses, if my experience with this one becomes favorable.

    I have this lens and its picture quality is brilliant. However I'm thinking of selling it, because for portraits I often switch to 50mm or 85mm f/1.8 anyway, and for the price of this lens I could get a 24-70 f/4 with IS, a 70-200 and even another nice prime lens! If the image quality of the f/4 version is as good, this would be much more value for money.

  • @darthjump
    @darthjump 5 лет назад +6

    In the Verdict i really missed the mention of the missing IS again. For this price it is outrageous. I can understand Canons marketing if they hold back on certain features to keep their other products valuable but not including IS in a 2000 € lens is a complete mess.

  • @njrivetelite
    @njrivetelite 10 лет назад +2

    Hey Chris, great review as always. The only thing Canon will have to worry about would be if Sigma releases an Art version of the 24 -70mm 2.8 with OS
    That lens would be a very high quality lens that would probably compete with Canon & Nikon's high end glass very well

    • @njrivetelite
      @njrivetelite 10 лет назад

      Pieter Knickerbocker that is true, and I hear great things about it. Though with how well sigma is building their Art line up. I think if they built a version with OS it would blow them all away. And or force Canon/Nikon to put Image Stabilization in their 24-70 2.8 to compete

    • @oasisbeyond
      @oasisbeyond 10 лет назад

      oasisbeyond if they do an Art version of the 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 2.8, chances are is that it will be a lil more than $1200 but probably not more than $1500

I am also really curious about your opinion regarding the Canon 24-70mm F/4L IS versus the Canon 24-105mm F/4L IS. Supposedly the 24-70mm has improved the distortion and vignetting, however it is not always as sharp as the 24-105mm? Which one should I buy?

    This lens is optically brilliant, but it is not tough, it can't even survive a kindergarten let alone a warzone, I had mine broken as it fell from a hight of 80cm (2.62ft), the shock damaged the circuit board rendering the autofocus unoperational, Canon said it is damaged beyond repair and it was a camera shop that offers repair that figured out the problem and replaced the circuit board from another broken 24-70 2, although I stand by recommending this lens I recommend those who prioritize toughness to stick with the mark 1 or develop skills to avoid exposing this plastic lens to shocks, Nikon shooters will have a 24-70 that stands in between the canon offering in both the optical performance and ruggedness

    It is not worth the upgrade from the original 24-70 f2.8L MKl

      +Freddie Slaughter it is worth the upgrade specially if you can find one second hand. This being said version I was quite good as well.

      Ohm it really is! The original 24-70 wasn't a great upgrade from the 28-70 though. Both were pretty horrid IMO. Soft and flat. When I used them, I had just come from Leica, so maybe my view was tainted. As much as this lens might not be perfection, it's much better. I wonder what happened in Canon between this release in 2012 and the 2014-16 designs. Newer ones are much better overall, but this is no slouch.

    Hi. Quick question: If I have this lens, do I REALLY need the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  6 лет назад

      Your backgrounds can get more out of focus with the 85mm f/1.8...but not that much more

  • @bitmastermac

    I was hoping this would be a better in corners. I hated the v1 of this lens and, as a zeiss collector/user, I had a contax 24-85 converted to EOS. That lens is failing and there are no parts, so I've bought the tamron 45 and 85 to give me AF in that range. Got any recommendations? I also upgraded my canon 16-35 2.8II to the f4IS.

      If this lens isn't good enough for you, you'll have to stick with prime lenses I'm afraid

    • @bitmastermac
      @bitmastermac 8 лет назад

      Yeah, I just spent some time with my choices. The 24-70II is far weaker at 70mm than my Tamron SP85, somewhat weaker at 50 than the Tamron 45SP, and pretty much ties with my Zeiss 25/2 at 24mm. Saturation and micro contrast are very nice on all 4. But the 24-70II blows away my Zeiss 28/2, lol, my favorite lens. Nothing matters but use.

    I don't know if you would remember but did you experience any clicking noise when using the zoom ring. I just recently bought mine and have that issue at the moment.

      If you're not sure what you want then it could be best to go for the zoom lens for the moment

    Hi Christopher Frost Photography
    I have question about the sharpness in the corner when the lens are at aperture 2.8.
    If your focus is in the centre of the picture, the corner are notable further away from the camera then the centre when you are shooting a house of this distance, are there not bokeh we see and not the bad sharpness of the lens?

    Hi, I'm curious, how important is image stabilization, and how big of a difference will it make in still photography? Thanks!

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 лет назад

      Frank Ding Depends what you're doing. It's more important as you zoom in, and very useful for shooting in low-light

    • @Frank-Ding
      @Frank-Ding 9 лет назад

      Christopher Frost Photography So it does make a significant difference in image quality, especially when shooting at slower shutter speeds?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  9 лет назад

      Frank Ding Yes, unless you have very steady hands

      Hard to find a zoom 24-70 mm which doesn't zoom "externally". Internal zoom is more usually seen at ultra wide zooms or telephoto zooms, but this lens starts at wide and goes to short-telephoto. Greetings from Brazil.
