Well said Dean, I’ve always been an advocate of do as you please, collect how you want, these items are yours to do as you please with, I have no issue with collectors who want to keep things sealed, but leave the rest of us alone to treat our collections as we want 👍
I agree collecting is a personal thing, I have had one issue with a sealed figure before, I opened it because I noticed the figure had yellowed, it was a hoth stormtrooper, but worse still the skirt part was now stuck to the card and was ruined after I managed to prize it off, one day none of these things will exist anymore so it’s important we enjoy them as we want, I like a mixture of both loose and boxed or carded as it’s nice to have carded figures, as it’s amazing they’ve survived so long unopened
Toy entropy is real. Even loose Star Wars figure sometimes need a wipe as they start to degrade. The rubber bands inside Mego figures (ie from The Black Hole) perish and the figures fall apart.
If the item is already crumbling away after decades of being packaged, what’s the harm? Why not open it, and enjoy what’s left of it before you die? You only live once - and NOTHING lasts forever.
I would say if you intend to collect out of box go out of your way and buy a loose figure instead of cracking a sealed on open, mostly because there are a finite number of sealed and many collectors who collect in box will only have a harder time finding what they want. More loose will always exist (maybe not in the best condition at times) but i think its courteous to in box collectors to buy loose if you intend to display loose. Now if you already own a sealed figure and change your mind well it is yours to do with as you wish but if you can swing it id suggest buying a 2nd that is loose so that way a sealed toy will still stay sealed.
Sometimes buying a sealed figure/ toy is the only way to get the complete version of the toy and in the condition you want it for display. I do however understand your point of view👍
I dont care, I open and enjoy as planned. That was their original intent and I agree they display so nicely loose. I have every skeleton warrior thing ever made, which really isn’t that much but they are all new in box and I’ve been pondering ripping it all open.
When it comes to what these vintage toys are worth,be it loose or in package i think Steve Sansweet said it best when he said "it's worth what you paid for it"
What some vintage toy collectors fail to realise is just because it was from a line that was ,as a whole, mega succesful does not mean everything in the line was.....just because something has "Star wars" on the package does mot make it automaticaly valuable.
That was very well explained, Dean. I don't think I could've done any better. I've been opening vintage toys for more than 15 years now. I think it's fairly rare that any vintage action figure doesn't need some sort of attention fresh out of its packaging. Most importantly, these are things that bring us happiness, and we only live once.
My vintage SW collection is from my childhood and so is all loose ( toys play with). Today when I purchase items. I keep them on/in packaging. I hope that modern plastics will be more durable and keep. If I ever saw an item in distress in the collection. I would of course deal with it. I just feel that if an item has been mint for the past 30-40 years. Then as it's current custodian, My responsibility to preserve it. Not for a future cash in as I never sell anything and I am sure my kids won't give it a moments consideration when they flog them. Yeah, If push came to shove. I would open anything that looked in trouble.
Its entirely up to the individual what they do with their collection. I totally see your point as well as the MOC collectors view - plastic degradation is just one hazard of their field, just like missing items and damage is for displayers. Ultimately the aims of the two groups are different, the important thing is to respect each others positions. Happy new year, all the best and happy collecting everyone for 2024! 🎉
Cool collectibles! I'm a big fan of the packaging design combined with the figure art/sculpturing, so I keep most things sealed on card/in box, but have a few statues for display out of box. Thanks.
Totally agree you with you Dean. In the end they will disintegrate. I’ve asked this Question to various Collectors of Graded & MISB and they always skip over the Question or play mental Gymnastics with it. Kind of Like a politician 😂😅. I think they get scared because many of these guys are in for the investment, & speculation of greater return at retirement. I love having them in the package for historical purpose etc, but in the end reproduction made to last are probably better. In 40 years though I doubt the market for these will be 1/10th what it is today. Great video
I was a late 90's kid, and spiderman and batman aways were in my collection as a kid, just recently as a 27 year old man I started to collect toys that I owned when I was a kid, I managed to get many of them closed in mint package, and I was struggling if I should open them or leave them in the box, and you saying "this is about recreating childhood memories" gave me the courage to start opening them, once I opened the first package I felt like a kid again, made me remember my parents taking me to the toy store and say "pick 2 toys that you want" me running through the aisle to pick that spiderman toy I watched on TV and batman of course because they would team up that same afternoon after cake, such good memories, thank you
Dean I have managed to stabilise sticky toys using Armorall. I spray the entire figire and let it soak for a few hours. Star Wars figures that were sticky 3 yrs ago remain tatcky free ever since.
Totally right sir, collect as you wish to collect. I have recently seen a sealed on card Galoob A-Team set of figures (small GI Joe types) but I decided not to buy it in the end as I knew that the O rings must be ready to snap and I wouldn't be able to open the bubble to fix them. I have no problem opening a modern day toy but vintage stuff, oh I don't know. However, I don't see the point of having a boxed vehicle as you might as well just have an empty box (unless there is a window in the box. How many people have bought the Hasbro plastic free boxed figures, never opened the box and have no idea what they just bought? Anyway, top video sir, these are the type of video that makes your channel stand out head and shoulders above many others.
That's exactly why I only have the 6 inch Galoob A-Team figures. I recently had the chance to get the carded set of the four 3.75" figures but immediately passed because I'm certain that they'll fall to pieces quite soon.
Same thing happened to Sy Snootles I bought the band loose and I display my collection in a cabinet, but I cannot get rid of the sticky residue. As for opening vintage toys if that brings you joy and enhances your collecting experience than more power to you I know it makes it better for me. I know moc collecting and the snobbery involved is really bad in the Star Wars community which is sad. Keep the videos coming.

Thank you for all your great videos this year, have a great new year and look forward to more AT8 in ‘24⭐️👍
Your opening comment said it all - collect however you want to collect. So far as I am concerned, it is none of my business how somebody else chooses to collect, nor what they like. I am all for those who want to open up their vintage toys and let them breathe - for me, toys and memories attached them them are a tactile experience. The feel of the toy is part of that memory.. A while back, there was some drama about this with other members of the YT toy community - and as one creator said there "don't hold me to your rules" when it comes to opening vintage.
I suffered from that drama you mentioned. As a result, I had to remove myself from some collecting communities I enjoyed being part of because the members had no backbone.
I keep all my "toys" MISB, in a hermetically-sealed container, on a shelf in the salt mine. Once a year, I get sent a photograph of the container. It's the best way to enjoy them.
I understand people who keep stuff in the package as well as I understand people who unpack items, both will have their reasons. I think collectors should enjoy their collections the way they like.
Yes I once owned entire set’s of 1979 12 inch mego BlackHole ,Star Trek ,Superman and yes all if not most had sticky heads and broken knee pins that need replaced or cleaned ,I’ve been there thank goodness I had already made myself a mego repair carrier case. Sad to say they will rot over time if not removed and inspected,It sucks but that’s part of being a toy collector UP KEEP is necessary
I am on your side with the option of opening them to let them breath or keep it sealed, it is totally my decision & if anybody wanted to tell me otherwise, I would then tell them to fuck right off!! Cheers🍻👍
Hey Dean, yea you have good points about the degradation of old figures in packaging. I don’t know if one should just go tearing into them because you’re gonna destroy any value that’s there but it is up to the owner and individual collector what they want to do. It depends on the condition to. This is where I would like to see Hasbro put more pride into the Star Wars Retro Collection. For example, getting rid of the edge where, retro stickers, language warnings and oversized clunky blister bubbles. Just give us a good product for MOC collectors. But, they don’t lol.
Most of my collection is loose, and my feelings are the same. Toys were meant to be held and played with. I repair and touch up figures that need it, and could care less what anyone thinks, because most people do not see it. I feel a need to inspect the details of everything, and prefer items I buy to be loose so I don’t have to throw away or store the packaging that was originally designed to get the product to the consumer and maybe draw their attention or advertise other items available. It’s never been an investment for me other than an investment in memories- I enjoy your posts, have a happy new year
I always open my collectibles I think they look better on display out of the box although I have had some that actually look better in the box, although very rare but sometimes the box art is so beautiful it makes an even better display piece. Question what did you use to clean the sticky heads? I have some of that as well. I guess I'm accustomed to it 😂
1980s, GI chose or next to disintegrate Summer actually just crumbling away and the people who had them graded. They’re gonna be very shocked when they find a bunch of crumbs inside of the cart bubble.

I agree, each to their own. If you want to open a sealed toy then that's your business and no one else's. About a year ago I was having a look at my original vintage Star Wars figures that have been stored for the past 40+ years in a Darth Vader figure case. Nearly every single one was really sticky, some worse than others, and a few were even showing visible degrading on the arms and legs. Gave them all a good clean but can't quite get rid of all the stickyness. As you say, in another 20 years they will probaly start to look much worse, but then they only hold sentimental value to me as my kids have absolutely no interest in them. Once I've gone they will probably get thrown out along with the rest of the 'old stuff' I have amassed over the decades.
Funny you mention this as opening vintage 80's and 90's G.I Joe figures are going to eventually be necessary, as the o-rings eventually degrade and have to be replaced. ( I actually had to do this with a vintage Cobra Commander. )
You might've done something like this before, but if not can you do a video on WHAT you do about the degradation, especially the stickiness? I am lucky enough to have most of my childhood toys still and I have a lot and I mean a LOT, and many of them are very sticky. I did try to watch some other vids but I don't remember really finding any good info and some of the info was downright BAD.
I am in total agreement with you and you said it with a gentle approach. I will not be so gentle. Unfortunately, our philosophy will not change the mindset of the collector community because they are blinded by greed and arrogance. Why does a figure have to be graded? Why keep toys sealed that are forty+ years old? As I mentioned on the SWIGG forum last week, the toys of the 1970s & 80s are going to go the way of the antique car community. As the pool of toys dries up due to more collectors all of the NOS toys will be taken and what will be left are toys with missing or broken parts. Replacement parts are going to be harder to find for broken, damaged or worn out toys and restorations will be necessary...that is if the plastic hasn't degraded by then. Car restoration (with repro parts) is acceptable...restoring old tin toys is acceptable....even restoring Matchbox cars is commonplace. I don't know why the elitists in the Star Wars toy community are so antagonistic towards it , except for the reasons I stated above.
Its entierly up to the indvidual.....some are in package /in box collectors and some dont care about the package and open them.....as you said Dean ,collect how you like.
Honestly, if you can just keep the box/packaging in nice shape, that should help retain the majority of the value. It’s extremely difficult to display a completely carded/boxed collection.
Interesting video and being a collector I take most of my figures or vehicles out of their package but it depends like the vintage style star wars figures I keep them in their package and some of my vehicles if they have window boxes Simply because I don’t have room enough to display them. But most of my collections ( Star Wars, Gi joe, Transformers, Lego, He Man are out of their boxes and packages) I don’t care if they worth x amount of $ I collect for the pleasure
Indeed I never care for the $ beside who would give you $$$ for a fig? They would try to find issues with it like there is a mark here there is something thing there bla bla bla Just enjoy make dioramas put them in poses enjoy them
Vintage toys and comic books are only worth what you’re willing to part with them for. My iron man vol 1 number 1 is worthless because I won’t sell it.
I say screw it you bought it it’s yours open that thing up man. All these people who go on and on about not opening the toys don’t care about the toy all they care about is the status symbol and resell value. Man play with that damn toy.
I would get resealed figures for opening. If people open the real thing, then in my opinion that figure is only worth its original retail price. I will give my green lights for an exact reproduction of that item.
@@AllThings80s I agree👍. Vintage Collection figures still cost more than Vintage Kenner figures. But I don't collect whatever is the priciest. Just like Planet of the Apes Leia never attracted me, even when it was priced 100$. If you are going to keep the toy ,do whatever you want with it. But if somebody is unsure wether keeping the figure, he should just get a resealed one☺
You can't take 'em with ya. Let's imagine that something horrible happens to you, and your unopened vintage toys end up in a yard sale for cheap. Do you want the Junkman to walk by and buy them?

I would get resealed figures for opening. If people open the real thing, then in my opinion that figure is only worth its original retail price. I will give my green lights for an exact reproduction of that item.
The only "value" I put on these toys is how happy they make me.
@@JustMe-tm5dc 👍🏻
You can't take 'em with ya. Let's imagine that something horrible happens to you, and your unopened vintage toys end up in a yard sale for cheap. Do you want the Junkman to walk by and buy them?
Oh God, what a horrible thought.....hahaha
