What you're saying is so true. I used to tell my employees that the best way to get job security is to make yourself invaluable. However there is another element to this equation. And that is opportunity. Just as in real estate where value is based on location, location, location, so too is professional value. You not only need to acquire skills but you need to be in a place where those skills are needed. Try being an IT expert in a farming community where internet access is unavailable. You'll soon learn this lesson. I'm also reminded of when I was in high school and the guidance counselors were convincing everyone to become teachers because there was a lack of them at the time. Well so many people listened that by the time they graduated with their teaching degree they couldn't get a decent job because there were so many teachers looking. So obtaining a skill and becoming valuable is dependent on location and demand. You can be valuable here today but worthless tomorrow or in another location.
I'm willing to read books but take more action, even if something doesn't work the first time and I make mistake. But what I really need to do is value my time as a high performance person.

I have loads of friends that come to me with their problems, their insecurities, things they wouldn't even tell anyone else, and mentally, I get into their heads and find out what's bothering them, and I help give them a weapon to fight their inner demons with. The main thing has to do with being unique, using your skill that not many have. My skill is music, and I know what I have to work on to get out there. The value is a combination of what the market demands, what you're perfect and unique at, and what you're passionate about.
Very true. I spent the last 4 years developing my skills that with my current job, I had 3 other companies fighting for me to come work for them. When one of those companies offered me a pay that I couldn't say no to, I told my current company that I was gonna leave. As soon as i said that, they panicked because they had no one that can solve their problems as good as i did. I became irreplaceable to them. They then offered a pay so high that it beat the other 3 companies. Still with that company today and making very good amount of money.

Already doing my part to make myself invaluable as a music arranger (pen name, Jonny Music) with my life-long mission of creating and building the World's Largest Pipe Organ Arrangements Library, with over 200 arrangements made and counting.
Experience and knowledge are the two main factors here. The more knowledge and experience you have in one concentrated field the more vailable you become. I'm at the top of my game with 30 years or more experience. I have many many competitors, but I am most the most called for and I charge double above my competitor's, however main contractor's are willing and happy to pay me that for the value I bring to the table. Make yourself a specialist and money comes easy.
