That's the way is one of the most under appreciated acoustic song of all time. It's amusing to me how many people think of Zeppelin only as a hard rock band, but they were doing 'unplugged stuff (on album and in concert) way before Unplugged was even a concept.
Zeppelin would often do a 3 or 4 song sit-down acoustic set in the middle of their shows. Bonham was often offstage for these taking a quick break. He'd return the favor during his lengthy "Moby Dick" drum solos.
Robert is singing about a love for Joni Mitchell a 60s folk singer from Canada who settled in southern California. This song represents another dynamic of Zeppelin where they would set aside part if their live show to do an acoustic set , which along with Jimmys solos and encores led to 3 hour shows!!!
Saw them in Toronto in '71 when album III came out. The acoustic set was a regular thing and one of the best parts of the concert. Beautiful playing by John Paul Jones on mandolin. He would also play bass parts with his feet on the organ pedals which you can see right in front of him at the end of this. I believe he was a church organist at one time and it's something they all learn to do. Supposedly this song is about Joni Mitchell. If you can find a live version of That's the Way, it has a similar feel to this song. I believe Robert Plant always loved the sound of the mandolin and it was a big part of his music when he performed with Alison Krauss.
Such a beautiful song; I heard it's about Joni Mitchell. Can't wait until you do In My Time Of Dying (from Physical Graffiti) live at Earls Court, 1975, and Ten Years Gone; probably best to do them in order like you're doing, though. Yes, that's a mandolin that Jonesy is playing.
Great reaction as always man, I really hope you react, or at least watch on your own, the song the directly follows this, another acoustic song called “that’s the way” it is right up there with rain song and going to California, in my opinion.
This a great performance that I keep going back to myself. Just wait until you checkout Jimmy playing White Summer breathtaking. Jimmy acoustic playing also was get to me, plus JPJ can play anything beautifully.
Another song of theirs you will love is....thank you... such a beautiful well written love song the video is just as good on you tube it has a picture of mountains and a lake you will get tons of views from this one again one of the best love songs ever written another great one is ...I'm gonna crawl...their last album in through the out door
led zeppelin were masters at switching gears.. going from rock, funk, acoustic, country, rock 'n' roll, blues. they could play any type of music. with ease
Sublime, epic, unforgettable ... James Patrick Page + Robert Antony Plant + John Richard Baldwin + John Henry Bonham ... the juggernaut of Valhalla. The best band EVER. Greetings from Danmark 🤜🇩🇰🤛
Take the words from The Song Remains the Same and The Rain Song with one and realize that you only live once. You are beginning your life journey. Make it count before the world gets you. They were fearless. Thats the message
Bassist John Paul Jones is playing the mandolin. Also the keyboard player when one is needed. This guy is so talented, yet overlooked. Robert Plant said he was the "glue" that holds this Band together." They are lucky to have a guy like that.
I found a woman with flowers in her hair. Traveled 2600 miles to California. We were in love and have been for 36 years. She still puts a flower in her hair for me.
Yes.....”children of the sun begin to awake” Laurel Canyon, where so many of the musicians of the time, including. Mitchell lived....”she plays guitar and she sings......oh she sings”. Mitchell is ranked as one of the finest songwriters/singers of the last 50 years. Plant had a huge crush from afar on her. He fell in love with the whole vibe and scene of California in 1968/69.......and has really stayed in love with that place and time, very wistfully, as so many of us alive at that time have done. Plant referred to himself in an interview in 2017 as a rather “sad, old hippy”. Allot of us are.
All of your comments echo all the same feelings I've always had about this song. Since I heard it for the first time in 1971. I've heard in years since that it was inspired by the band's mutual obsession with Joni Mitchell.
They played an acoustic set of 4 songs..after Bonzos Moby Dick.. A rest for all.. Saw a show at MSG where Bonzo was late coming back..on Bron Y Ar Stomp.. The 3 were looking behind and just vamping..until John came running on stage.. Fun moment.. LZ the GOAT..
Probably their best set ever was the 1970 Royal Albert Hall show. You should check out How Many More Times,” and also the encore from that concert, it is amazing. You should also check out Cream. If John Paul Jones is the #1 bass player, then Jack Bruce from Cream is #1b, same goes for the drummer Ginger Baker, and of course there is Eric Clapton too. Some starters would be the live versions of “Spoonful” and “Tales of Brave Ulysses” (the live version of which is not on RUclips, but is by far better than the studio version). They have a lot of great ones like Zeppelin, but are more bluesy.
You tricked me. I thought we were going in order. It's just so much easier to keep track of instead of guessing which ones or looking. Saves trouble of requesting songs already viewed.
Nah I just wanted to react to this specific performance because it's my favorite song and I really wanted to see it live. Going back in order after this video.
If you think you prefer their folksier side, give a listen to 'Bron-Yr-Aur', 'Thank You', 'What Is and What Should Never Be' and 'The Battle of Evermore'. All amazing songs, that I think you'll love! :) Then again, virtually all Zeppelin songs are amazing! ;) :)
You'll find several phrases to describe Zeppelin's music: hammer of the gods (itself a lyric from "Immigrant Song"), tight but loose, light and shade, whisper to the thunder. Their music often display at least one of these mantras and what type of journey you take with it is up to the listener.
One of the big reasons that Robert Plant was able to have a successful solo career after 1980, when he very deliberately tried to tone down the “rock god” image he had crafted for Zeppelin, is that his voice, in addition to the power, can be emotive as hell. It can be as soft as a feather, and delicate. As he has gotten older, he has used that side of his voice to great effect, and has produced some gorgeous music. You are a young man (true confession, I am Plants age) but you’re not just wanting the hard rock only, but the full spectrum of music. This channel is not the appropriate place for Plants later music, but you might wish to privately do some sampling of his 10 or so solo albums he’s done over the last 40 years. There are many jewels there.
I love your reactions, they are genuine and heartfelt...if you want to live a true magic experience, do a reaction to Achilles Last Stand Live at Knebworth 1977 or Kashmir Live at Knebworth 1979, they will blow your mind. Keep it up dude!
Just subscribed Brother, enjoy your artistic take and emotional reaction to this song by this AWESOME GROUP OF ARTIST. IM a drummer ,now playing only in CHURCH. MUSIC MOVES ME IN MY SOUL. GOD BLESS
Julie Manarin Sorry about my prolonged absence!! I’m really enjoying making these reactions, just needed a lil bit of time off. I’ll be back this upcoming week with more reactions!!!
Great reaction! Thx. I saw the. 2x in one week back then!! They did insane shows, but then sat down like this for an acoustic set. Can’t rem what they played, but definitely this (same tour I think) Stairway, Gallows Pole, etc. Two amazing later live performances, find Gallows Pole from Jools Holland, 1994, and Battle of Evermore from MYV Unplugged w Najma Ahktar singing backup. Also check out the studio versions of Misty Mountain Hop and Four Sticks from LZ 4. I haven’t seen anyone do those yet.
As this is a shout out to Joni Mitchell, if you don't know her music, suggest you give it a listen. Early work is very folky. Later work gets more jazzy.
You continue to do one great reaction after another🎶🎶 keep going you hv alot to choose from but this song is from Zep4 aahhh whose keeping track right GOOD MUSIC!!✌️
WHERD YA GO AMIGOMISSS YER REACTIONS I HAVE LOTTA SONGS BY THEM THATD BLOW YOU AWAY!!! YEP SONG REMAINS THE SAME DVD IS AWESOME I GOT IT AN I SEEN IT BACK AT THE MIDNITE SHOWING QUADRIPHONIC STEREO THE PARTY WAS ON AS IF IT WAS REAL CONCERT I SEEN IT W/ GIRLFRIEND LEAST 6OR 7 TIMES OVERALL DOZENS OF TIMES ACILLIES LST STAND OR TEA FOR ONE ETC ETC HOPE YA GET BACK ON YER A NATURALAND GOT GREAT TASTE!!! CHEEERS!!!
New to your channel but 20 years ago my husband and I had this played at our Wedding along with Joni Mitchell's Coyote and Beethoven. Always be open minded
Yes, "In my time of dying and "Trampled Underfoot" from the same concert I believe are musts. They are most definitely not calm with those two songs. In my time of dying is an old blues song from the deep south about a mans journey into heaven. Page plays an amazing slide guitar the entire song. Trampled Underfoot is a remake of the old Robert Johnson tune from the 20's or 30's called "Terrapin Blues." It's about comparing a woman's body to car parts. It is super funky and an amazing song. If not the same concert they are both on the same dvd as this. Also the other two acoustic songs that were a part of this set are amazing as well.
You could then go ahead with the full acoustic set of that show, which is great! That's the way: ruclips.net/video/NdWPkgtaOTw/видео.html; Bron-Y-Aur Stomp: ruclips.net/video/_PFmGicOEeY/видео.html; and/or Tangerine: ruclips.net/video/79JcPZNLCTY/видео.html
Going to California , Battle of Evermore, Rain Song. , Gallows Pole. Bron Yr Aur. Thank You. ZEPS best acoustics . Check out going to Cal and tbe Kasmir performances from the Unleaded show. I believe it was 1994 No JPJ or J B. But great stuff. If you tend like the acoustic Zep check out Led Zeppelin III
I tell you what, there is no way in fucking hell I would have made it through the Cold War Alive without the sounds of Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd to let me know that there is a GOD, and don't give up... So glad you and these reaction kids are finding this music now in these Confusing times.... I know this time is much more frightening then what I had gone through. So let the warmth of the music always carry you to that special place where things just make sense. Trust in GOD,, You can make it to that wizard on the mountaintop.
Led zeppelin greatest band ever to walk the planet earth they are the definition of. Rock and roll no Beatles no rolling stones no pink Floyd they would not even carry Jimmy page guitar case dismissed haters
John Henry Bonham. The other three members often said that "Bonzo" was the rock on which Led Zep was founded. Here is simply the best drum solo you are ever likely to hear. They were all great musicians, but Bonzo was extra special. ruclips.net/video/r9-42mu1D9Y/видео.html
Do yourself a favor and check out Roberts version of "If I were a carpenter" off of his '93 album "Fate of Nations". I promise you, you will absolutely LOVE. it.
For all of Zeppelin's "god of thunder" dynamic they can go as soft and delicate as anyone. I think that in part is why they are so great.
You'll probably really love 'Tangerine' and 'That's The Way' from this show as well, they're both also mellow acoustic pieces.
Tangerine...haunting...
That's the way is one of the most under appreciated acoustic song of all time.
It's amusing to me how many people think of Zeppelin only as a hard rock band, but they were doing 'unplugged stuff (on album and in concert) way before Unplugged was even a concept.
Jimmy Page is an amazing acoustic player, and that us saying something because playing acoustic is very different from electric.
Ten Years Gone, too!!
Ahh - Led Zeppelin the Greatest Rock band ever to walk this planet.
Zeppelin would often do a 3 or 4 song sit-down acoustic set in the middle of their shows. Bonham was often offstage for these taking a quick break. He'd return the favor during his lengthy "Moby Dick" drum solos.
John were at some of there show
Indeed, kind of intimate performance, touching.
Led Zeppelin: the juggernaut of Valhalla.
The best band EVER.
👏👏👏
Being a native Californian, this song has always been special to me. I love that line too
I love that song, and that performance.
Robert is singing about a love for Joni Mitchell a 60s folk singer from Canada who settled in southern California. This song represents another dynamic of Zeppelin where they would set aside part if their live show to do an acoustic set , which along with Jimmys solos and encores led to 3 hour shows!!!

My fav Led Zeppelin song too. It gets to me in a way no other does.
Beautiful version of this masterpiece by the #GOATS.
Yes do the In My Time Of Dying live!
Great reaction as always man, I really hope you react, or at least watch on your own, the song the directly follows this, another acoustic song called “that’s the way” it is right up there with rain song and going to California, in my opinion.
This song I can listen to on repeat for ages. It's so good you don't realise there are no drums, that's how captivating it is.
was in the audience for that performance...what a show, saw them another 3 times that week
Where have you been? I hope you haven’t quit. I like your take on Zeppelin. I was looking forward to the remainder of your journey.
This a great performance that I keep going back to myself. Just wait until you checkout Jimmy playing White Summer breathtaking. Jimmy acoustic playing also was get to me, plus JPJ can play anything beautifully.
Another song of theirs you will love is....thank you... such a beautiful well written love song the video is just as good on you tube it has a picture of mountains and a lake you will get tons of views from this one again one of the best love songs ever written another great one is ...I'm gonna crawl...their last album in through the out door
led zeppelin were masters at switching gears.. going from rock, funk, acoustic, country, rock 'n' roll, blues. they could play any type of music. with ease
Earls Court is great. I believe the best parts are the new songs featured on physical graffiti. In My Time of Dying, Trampled Under Foot etc.
Two of my faves on Physical Graffiti. In My Time of Dying kicks ass at Earls Court.
the hammer of the gods
Good music will always resonate no matter the generation.
the greatest band there ever was !!!!!
Who would say Led Zeppelin were the kings of country as well
Thank You is another great acoustic.
Thanks for your love of music -
This is just the tip of the Mighty Zep.. never to be topped 🌟
Sublime, epic, unforgettable ...
James Patrick Page + Robert Antony Plant + John Richard Baldwin + John Henry Bonham ... the juggernaut of Valhalla.
The best band EVER.
Greetings from Danmark 🤜🇩🇰🤛
This song typifies how so many people felt about California back in the 70s. The land of endless promise
They are the GOATS OF THE GOATS! You should check out CROSBY, STILLS,NASH, AND YOUNG...SEEING THAT YOU LOVE THIS TUNE.
Thank you for recognizing how good it really is because well, it is. Lol
Take the words from The Song Remains the Same and The Rain Song with one and realize that you only live once. You are beginning your life journey. Make it count before the world gets you. They were fearless. Thats the message
Каждая песня-произведение искусства! Каждая зальная версия-лучшее воспроизведение студийной! Величайшие из великих!!!
Bassist John Paul Jones is playing the mandolin. Also the keyboard player when one is needed. This guy is so talented, yet overlooked. Robert Plant said he was the "glue" that holds this Band together." They are lucky to have a guy like that.
Aren't they amazing? Do In My Time Of Dying live!! Killer!
Yeah man I know what you mean. It's been getting to me for a long time. Favorite Zeppellin song
This album contains huge songs, Stairway, Black Dog and Rock and Roll but its Misty Mountain Hop I want to see you react to
I love watching your reactions, the pleasure and enjoyment you are showing is so addictive..this is one of my favourites also, calming and catchy...
Probably my favorite song by them
Jones on lead with the Mandolin “ considering he’s a bass @ pianist he’s the “ Musicians Musician “
Like this ? Then “Ten Years Gone” is a MUST.
All of your comments echo all the same feelings I've always had about this song. Since I heard it for the first time in 1971. I've heard in years since that it was inspired by the band's mutual obsession with Joni Mitchell.
Do more songs from this concert.
