  • EDIT: Unfortunately, one of our pigs died this morning, the day before the video went live. Please refrain from giving us too much well-meant pig advice while we're trying to sort out this new situation. Thank you.
    As time goes on, we will gradually incorporate different animals into our land management process, yes that includes goats 😉.Keeping our land clean is very important if we want to protect our house. Can our pigs help us?
    We are Zak and Jackie and together with our child and our old dog Caat we live in the mountains of Central Portugal. In 2019 we found ourselves buying 2 hectares of abandoned land and a house and we finally made the move in 2022. Follow us on our journey of rehabilitating former Eucalyptus plantation land, building a house and a life in a new country.

    Unfortunately, Higgy (the pink pig) passed away the day before this video aired. The vet drove out here and conducted a post mortem examination. Her digestive system twisted, something that can happen to pigs, and her death was quite swift. We will talk more about this in the future but now we are just processing it. Thank you for your understanding. Pigl (the black pig) is doing well in spite of losing her companion.

      I also adore pigs, even so, in Tennessee where I last kept a quantity, I would ocasionally feel vulnerable to their teeth.
      Didn«t stop me from riding on their backs- they seemed to enjoy it!
      Good luck with your bísaro.

      So sorry. It can happen with horses, too. It's always so quick and tragic.

    Suggestion- you want trees and to feed your pigs simultaneously and for free- when you find acorns scatter them in the pigs areas, and even healthy pigs generaly miss some , and they germinate.Boa sorte.

      Overall, life is still very good :) All the sunshine we're getting right now helps immensely as well. It was just a bit of a week, loosing all these animals to uncontrollable cirumstances…

    Sorry to hear about Higgy, I no you all say your staying in a shack but we can see clearly there is a house on the property. Are you fixing it up? And can we have a tour?

    • @oakolive
      @oakolive  Год назад +2

      Yeah we have a half finished house that we are finishing. Thank you for your condolences... We built the shack last year to live in with our son while we work on the house, we cook and eat in the house and the shack is a bedroom and play room for the toddler. We're thinking of doing a property tour at some point.

    Sorry for your loss, I do hope that you will get another one very soon. Have you had any issues with caterpillars in your pine trees? I hear that in Portugal you really have a big problem with them.

    Good job lets see if I understood, the electrical wire keep the wild animals out and the pigs in with no Bad surprises is it?or pigs at night go in somewhere safe?

    • @oakolive
      @oakolive  Год назад +2

      Hello! The pigs live outdoors full-time and they have a small shelter to protect them from the elements. We constantly move them across the land. Yes, in theory the electric fence keeps our pigs in and the wild pigs out so we don't have unwanted piglets. This has not been tested thoroughly though by us, pigs have to be trained on electric wires. So a wild pig might just walk straight through. Lets hope we never find out!

    Bramble? Translates as "espinheiro". CN be applied to any bush or plant that has thorns. I Portugal's case applied to bushes that are thorny and produce berries (amoras , amora-preta), blackberries, etc. . Interesting that you are aware of the fire danger or unkeptnor unlooked after forested areas. I am sorry that one of your pigs passed away. Even if they are deemed farm animals, looking after a sentient being does generate a rapport. I would not make a good farmer. I would not sell animals or eat them. As it is i seldom eat meat anyhow. In 10 years they will look like that but ur land will be totally dry and barren thanks to the eucalyptus.

      Thank you for the Portuguese lesson, much appreciated. We are working har with the animals to take care of the Eukalyptus problem, the other challenge is to get enough saplings for medronho, Carvalho, sobreiro etc... to replace the Eukalyptus.

      @@oakolive Hardly a lesson! Just trying to help. Yes i understand your difficulties. Those species r significantly harder to grow than eucalyptus.They take much longer also. Eucalyptus is to trees what weeds are to plantations and cultivated land. They introduced it in the 19th century for the paper industry because of their growth rate. They cut down huge swathes of forests to plant eucalyptus. A crime in my view well in line with the human short term greed (gross stupidity) for a quick dollar.Good to see that you guys have a positive view of your stewardship of that land! Sorry for the typos. I hate virtual keyboards after all these years. Miss blackberry keyboards. Had an almost zero typo blunders with them 😀

    LOL, i'm looking at that electrical fence, you guys are farming scientists, everything has to be precise. What about getting a few goats? they are perfect for that terrain and for cleaning the bush, and they give delicous milk. They may get a bit too much destructive though, but when that happens you have to spot the agitator and there it goes into the pan with potatoes! another advantage of the goat is that it never gets sick. Normally if it gets sick it's because it is dead already.
    I like the German saying, good way to see things.
    The eucaliptus has become a sort of a plague in this country, it has been broguht just because of the paper industry, but one good thing about the saplings is that they make good staffs.
    Too bad that the oak takes so much time to grow old. It's one of the most beautiful tree, but it's an investement, for the future generations and for the world.

    • @oakolive
      @oakolive  Год назад

      We'll probably get goats in the future. Lots of other things occupying us in the meantime.
