How to Play Aloy in Dungeons & Dragons (Horizon Forbidden West Build for D&D 5e)

- Today we have a build for Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West in Dungeons & Dragons. Taking all the abilities of this high tech scavenger and fitting them in D&D 5e is a challenge, but with some multiclassing makes a hunting machine better than the sum of its parts.

Ranger: I would like to pet the wild animal
DM: They are machines
Artificer: I would like to pet the machine and make it a friend
DM: Uh, they are both?
Aloy: My time has come
Sometimes you want to pet t he cat. Sometimes you want to pet the roomba. Sometimes though... sometimes it's a cat on a roomba and then you need a special touch
Trip Attack is my favourite Journey to the West Character.
Thanks to the one person who thought this was funny
Entangle also kinda works for adhesive bombs. Slow is a better fit but the classes that get it don't fit Aloy.
I've literally been having dreams about this build for the past solid week. I kept having to remind myself in-dream that it's not out yet.
Get out of my brain, Tulok!
Okay, now that I've actually watched the build, I was on the right track with my prediction of Ranger / artificer. Rogue makes sense if I had thought about it, but I would have never guessed those fighter levels. Another excellent build, and going by my repeated dreams about it, one I've been looking forward to more than any other.
You must accept the Phil into your mind
Reject hexshadow, Become Barbrarian
Awesome build there, as someone who is obsessed with making characters that can use both bow and spear, this one was very satisfying, and an excellent way to do it. I will have to remember Ranger/artificer.
My other options being Ranger/Monk or straight monk for Dex Spears, or Hexblade, for Charisma Spears. (Or just straight ranger/druid for wisdom based Quarter staffs and dex bows)
Focusing on Ranger/Artificer is a good way to cut down on multiclassing in a way that might be more effective in-game. And, while it's perhaps not the most accurate, going Artillerist instead of Battle Smith can allow you to use a wider variety of weapons to replicate Aloy's arsenal.
I think Battlesmith makes for a really good Aloy because of the reasons Tulok already mentioned, an Enhanced Bow and Spear, + the Steel Defender which can totally be some kinda tamed robot dinosaur. Definitely agree that something a bit more focused on Artificer and Ranger would've been a better move mechanically since the Rogue and Fighter levels are just kinda _there_ .
@@aquamarinerose5405 I'm not saying Tulok is off the mark, this is a great Aloy build. I think we can all see that it's not a particularly strong build when translated into D&D. Even going more levels into BS would at least give the Defender more HP so it's still useful at later levels. Doesn't mean alternative builds can't also be fun or somewhat fitting.
I made an Aloy build a while ago and ended up with Artificer 12 / Rogue 4 / ranger 4, so pretty similar but a bigger focus on tech. I'm really not sure the extra fighter levels add anything worthwhile.
It is my opinion that if the player is playing an Artificer I'd allow them to create certain weapons in Aloy's arsenal if they wanted to. An Artificer's creations shouldn't be confined to just their magical tinkering and infusions ability
Taking some Arcane Archer levels could also be interesting and might work instead of elemental wepon. Edit: Did some research this doesn't work. I thought arcane archer would have elemental stuff, but mainly force damage.
This is a really neat jack of all trades kind of character.
That Tarzan reference had me in stitches
This is what I needed. Definitely gonna be my next character
The best I could come up with for this build was arcane archer/Monster Slayer ranger/Battlesmith artificer
In defense of micromanaging what fits into bag of holding, I need to start doing this in my game because players are abusing the hell out of it.
Yeah, the recent trend of D&D players and DMs thinking "rules = bad" is kinda baffling to me, and I don't really like the insinuation that not letting players break the game by smuggling an army of 300 golems or whatever into the lich's lair makes me some kind of pedant.
Especially with low-strength characters, keep track of carry weight. If Strength is a dumpstat, they need to feel it, and it's mostly felt in the day to day 'your pack is too heavy, don't carry 3 sets of armor'
I think it kinda varies.
Keeping track to the smallest gram or ounce 'cause rules' is just annoying... *but* if someone's trying to cram 4 elephants into the bag of holding or carry a treasure chest on their 8 strength wizard...
Basically what I'm saying is... mostly I ignore the rules, but if someone is going way overboard, that's when I remind them of carry limits and stuff.
There's also the situation where you're playing a hardcore survival style game where the whole point is tracking things like food, water, and everything you can carry with you is crucial - in those cases absolutely track everything completely.
Yeah, a lot of players mistake "cubic foot" for "foot cube". BoH holds 64 cubic feet which players seem to think is this cavernous space for all their gear... but it's really only a 4-foot cube. It's still a lot, comparatively, but it's not exactly a bank vault or a room at the inn. It's also limited to 500 lbs, so if they're thinking of, say, filling the bag with holy water for the upcoming vampire attack, 64 cubic feet of water weighs almost 2 tons
@@BaronQmark I'm loose with the rules if I actually like the plan that they come up with. Like I have a specific limit to what I will allow, such as what you said but if it's creative and fun, and not totally game breaking then I'm all for it
I have wanted this for so long. Thank you, truly you have blessed us
Ive been waiting for this for 300+ vids thank you!
I always forget that the absolute best Pathfinder/3.5 monk archetype isn't in 5e. Otherwise I was gonna guess ranger/monk.
Zen Archers could add their Wis to attacks made with bows and could use certain ki powers with bows. They could even, wait for it, Flurry of Bows. That's not what it was called, but that's what I called it.
How dare you do this to me. Now I have to tell all my friends
@@colevu8906 I'll see what I can Homebrew up after work
Flurry of bows: barraging the enemy with bowties
I was thinking inquisitive rogue because they can search as a bonus action and the focus highlights hidden objects, but I'm not disappointed with this build
Ooo that's real clever!
I've been so excited for this build!!!
Bro if you're not using the bombs, you're missing out. The sling was one of my favorite weapons, especially the sticky bombs
Also, skipping out on those other weapons like the Ropecaster and the slings really ramps up the difficulty of the game.
The DLC weapons are great, too
The Tarzan reference was perfect. But you opened and closed with a Silens pun.
Yes! I've been waiting for this
Watching the background game play of Forbidden West makes me really excited to play.
New video to up my mood at work
Yeah, build your own characters with wide trees are kinda hard to have one build for, you could probably do a dozen builds and none of them would have EVERYTHING. The ranger/artificer combo is pretty solid though
I’ve been hoping for an Aloy build since zero Dawn . Excited
Yay thank you for finally making her.
I knew it was going to be BM/Some sort of Ranger but I was racking my brain on the subclass because I totally forgot about Hunter's Sense!!!
And obviously the rest of the multiclassing is great and I didn't see it coming so hell yeah.
This is such an awesome build
Dude id love to see your take on an akaza build. I made 2 builds but idk how to make the best of both worlds... (made this comment before on a diff account)
Would love to see you do Lan Mandragoran and/or Moiraine Damodred from Wheel of Time.
Nice, Aloy is currently one of my favorite characters ever and I also like D&D so i see this as a absolute win
So it was an interesting build that I enjoyed
Fun d&d lore fact: there is a smoke drake vampire named Capnolithyl in Forgotten Realms. His creature type, indeed, includes words for dragon and undead. Which is an oddity that infrequently comes up these days in 5e. It essentially opens them up to having more weaknesses, which is why you very rarely see a dual creature types anymore.
Mixing technology and the wilderness experience is an interesting combination (and I mean the wildlife, the whole biome its robots! WHERE ARE MY GIANT BIOLOGICAL ANIMALS?! MOTHER NATURE WILL NOT BE LEFT BEHIND IN THIS RACE!)
A lil lale comment, but I still will commit to the cause for a Tangle the lemur build! even if i have to replicate myself to win the time race (hopefully with less marginalization for being sintetic... kinda ironic considering the animals are bots in this world).
This is a good build for a theoretical campaign where beasts = constructs. Everything that effects 1 affects the other, unless specified (like the war machines or smaller wildlife.
In such a campaign, your DM would probably split them up into types of construct-beasts for favored enemy.
I love the build and i love the character. She was definitely a Ranger/Artificer.
its good that you get both of the favored enemies, Beast and Construct. Also, at level 6 you could choose humans or humanoids as a third favored enemy, so every enemy in the game could now be your next prey.
@@magistermagus1211 i think it would be a bit harder to do than that, because there is a rule that is, "if your campaign exclusively fights 1 creature type, consider splitting that type into multiple types." Which is, i think, what would happen here.
So for example, if you have an undead campaign, it might be something like Favored Enemy Zombies, Skeletons, Ghosts, vampires, liches, and necromancers."
@@zamba136 Im looking for that rule in the player's handbook and i cant find it ¿is it in the DM Guide?
@@magistermagus1211 it's not written with the Ranger as an Optional Rule? Maybe because Favored Enemy is garbage anyway. It was definitely in previous editions where Ranger was a real class.
@@zamba136 i mean, its not That bad: it is better than favored foe because it lets you concentrate on spells and it fits thematically (a hunter needs to know about its prey if he wants to be good ad hunting it). But it is a bit lackluster. thats why i use my own homebrew instead.
A ranger that could use Animal Friendship and Dominate Beast on constructs would be interesting, it could be Aloy, or it could be someone who’s lived in a robotic apocalypse all their life, so they know how constructs tick (literally).
Okay, obligatory comment for the algorithm and a guess of the build: I have been trying to build Aloy in one way or another since HZD came out. My favorite variation tbh was an Artificer Battlesmith/Rogue/Ranger Gloomstalker. Custom Lineage or Variant Human for Skilled feat to get the crafting going. Flavoring all the artificer spells and stuff as different arrows or bombs and such was the best. Plus the combination of many skill/tool prof's and expertise with being very SAD thanks to Battle Smith resulted in a very "heroic" and competent character just like Aloy. Now, to see what Tulok came up with! Cheers!
I live your content man! I'm excited for either Knuckles or Tails. I've been trying to build them both since your Sonic Build! Knuckles could be Simic Hybrid to get glide early. The 3 classes would be Unarmed Fighter, Cleric (He can fight ghost and the Master emerald chose him so he wouldn't be a paladin), and monk to help keep up with Sonic! Tails would be a furry Gnome, Monk (so he can keep up with sonic) and artificer sub class Armoror (You can Flavor his Armor as his Cyclone from Sonic Adventure 2)
Had figured Armorer would be the Artificer subclass of choice, given all of the stuff with armor meshes (and particularly the aesthetic of that one collectible-reward armor from the first game), but in retrospect, "pre-hacked robo-beast buddy" definitely makes Battle Smith makes sense, and wanting to use an actual bow as your weapon does take away one of the main perks of the more fitting Armorer armor model. (Makes me wish there was a "trick arrow" Artificer subclass, though - seems like there'd be a lot more room to lean into the archetype mechanically than the Arcane Archer offers, and hit a very different range of flavor than the Ranger.)
That might creep into the Arcane Archer's territory, though, which the devs might not like. However, I think there needs to be more spots of overlap in 5e, so I'm all for it!
Should do Sharkboy and Lavagirl next
Wow, am I the first? Thank you Tulok for providing us with so many, wonderful builds and humour. You're amazing
You missed it, sorry
Not first, but I still appreciate you 😘
Nope, I was first, and I wish I could go back in time and let you be
@@seanchan4478 actually I had ya beat, sorry
@@rhiarose9436 whoops, then I guess my attempts at time travel will no longer be necessary
LETS GO ALOYYYY
I absolutely love this character and this build. Although, I was a little bit disappointed that she didn't go Rogue 5 for uncanny dodge. It's one of her best defensive features and it's iconic.
But I'm just nitpicking and it's an excellent build nonetheless.
*Edit* I see now why you went with Scout Rogue. Ingenious sir.
Thanks.
Do you think you'll ever make Killua Zoldyck?
I was just thinking the other day how mixing and matching Tasha’s vs PHB works better for different rangers, such as still taking favored enemy against constructs for Aloy
Still pulling for Eglantine Price (Bednobs and Broomsticks), Winifred Sanderson (Hocus Pocus), Prince Voltran (Flash Gordon), Counselor Troi (Star Trek: tNG), Mary Poppins, and the Reverend Doctor Syn (The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh), Bugs Bunny would be good idea. Sir Dragonet King Arthur's court jester (Idylls of the King/ Morte d'Arthur) would be wonderful as well.
I made Aloy for a planned oneshot (never got to play her) but i basically had the same thing, just with more levels in rogue and artificer instead of ranger.
HELL YEAH
Damn this was one of my upcoming builds. Oh well.
I probably would have taken battle smith to 9 instead of ranger for a stronger steel defender and for 3rd level spells (ranger rounds down, artificer rounds up for spellcasting as half casters)
Edit: also might have been worth taking resilient (CHA) and Tough instead of the two wisdom boosts since you already have expertise in the wisdom skills
Could you do bisco soon? I think it would be a really cool build
You know who else is great at ranged combat, has high mobility, has self healing, and potentially also doesn't use Dexterity for her ranged attacks? Jesse Faden from Control.
Honestly Tails is rather easy build.... seriously the hardest part is do I use Tabaxi or not.... I would, since Foxes are Canines with Feline traits (like how Hyena are Felines with Canine Traits)
YYYYYEEEEEEESSESSED!!!!!! Time for one of the best girls to shine!
I would love an ed eds n eddy build
You should make a build for Finn the Human!
Still looking for John Milton for the Devil's Advocate
Will you do a video on General Esdeath ?
Low dex archer? that can only mean-
*sniffs the air*
a r t i f i c e r
Step two, get a twitter to complain that more people are playing DND as their elden ring character.
Bets are on Battesmith--robo companion and you don't need to pump strength or dex.
Wouldn't the undead dragon be like the dracolich where it counts as an undead?
mas que tremenda bagunça a Aloy ficou, mas eu adoraria testar
Tulok, your videos bring a certain creative essence to my DnD playing. Could you try to do Nathan Drake or Ragnar Lothbrok?
I'm here once again to boost the algorithm and ask for How to Play V from V For Vendetta
please make a build of virgil dmc
Wow a ranger that is not a ranger. I like it! Only minor problem. A metal companion cannot be your mount without a way to increase it's size and it's going to have terrible hp. It can still be useful just outside of combat.
Can you do a build on Godzilla or Professor X
I could really use an ability like Battle Ready when playing Horizon: Forbidden West. People say my IQ has to be at least 130, but my aim in shooter games is ATROCIOUS!
Also, since lvl 3 Artificers can't make two weapons magical yet (IIRC) then your spear attacks will not have any ability modifier bonuses. Sounds like the melee combat in these games.
I feel like Archivist would be better than Battle Smith, with the Artificial Mind standing in for the Focus.
This is awesome, but also man I'm still so mad that FW is PS5 only cause I'm not going back to console for one game.
Forbidden West is also on PS4! :O
a build to hunt metal dinos to
I was wondering, after looking thru every build you have done I noticed one anime of characters that I bet people would love to see built... the Seven Deadly Sins. Many of the characters would be really cool to see built as d&d builds. Personally I would love to see Escanor as a DnD character
I see escanor as 100% Oath of Glory paladin, maybe some sorcerer in there. Basically the Gilgamesh build.
@@Zer0Dakilla I have heard of some doing the sun monk build for it, im forgetting the subclass exact name
"Like and subscribe for less Sylens next time you play...maybe."
I always know terrible puns are coming, yet I can't stop /groan and/facepalm.
Can you make a Acnologia build from fairy tail?
Would you consider doing character builds for WWE superstars?
Please....Vin from Mistborn....you know you want to...
If possible can you do may from guilty gear?
Titan fall idk how to request stuff on patron so I do it here instead
could you do david dunn from unbreakable at some time?
Battle smith? :)
Would you be able to make Kel from OMORI? I think he'd be fun to rp but all I could think of is sorcerer with spells that have "-ball" in them
No calligraphy, no true strike… not multiclassed enough welp I guess nothings good enough… except this episode. This episode is funny and fun. Srsly - Link x Alloy will be fun to play in pvp AND on the same team 🗡 🛡
I’m the 1k 👍🏾
5 till 400!
I have a feeling these enemies have some kind of weak spot that's easily identifiable... you'd think they'd be some bright, glowy color... 🤔🤔🤔/j
The funny thing is that canonically the reason Aloy is so good at hunting is because the machines weakpoints *don't* glow bright orange, it's just the focus she found as a kid. She's the best hunter in the world because she's got a cheatsheet/aimbot stuck to her head.
Im gonna sayyyy artificer monk? (Edit, I was pretty wrong lol)
But we need more Sylens! He’s the best character.
V. human Knowledge Domain Cleric with the Charlatan Background?
@@michaelbryant3640 could work. Though I wonder how to do the cyber ware.
Oooh, yeah! Tempted to say that if Aloy is best as Artificer/Ranger, Sylens is best as Cleric/Artificer/Rogue?
TL;DR of this build:
Your Aloy is functional at lv. 8. Everything else is "season to taste".
Yeah, the flipside of characters with so much customization and variety of abilities
Me: Geez, whoever provided the backgrounds for this REALLY doesn't know how to play the game... rushing into enemy camps, battering away at shields, fighting multiple large machines with the basic bow... clearly, this person has no idea how to use the intricate, strategic options enabled by Aloy's stealth-abilities and wide weapon-selection!
Tulok: Tangle... caster? Is that what it's called? I just shot stuff and hit it with the spear when I played the game...
Me: Ah.
Knuckles
Sanic???
Could you build a platypus, it should be easy, they don't do much. WAIT? PERRY THE PLATYPUS!?!
Finally a genshin build (it's a joke only a few would get)
I got it! ^_^
Can you make arknights characters or are they too simple.
If you do play this and want to RP Aloy just never stop talking. Point out everything on the environment and say what ever you think you should do. Even while in stealth.
I mean, she *does* have a charisma score of 8...
I really like Aloy as a character but the "thinking out loud" thing is very love it or hate.
How to play Alastor from Hazbin Hotel plz!!!
We haven't really seen what Alastor can do since we only have the pilot and a couple of shorts to go off of. I think we should wait until the series proper starts and we get to see what he can do.
Maybe one of the cast of helluva boss would work better?
@@JC-gk7gw Yeah I can see that. Since the first season's basically all wrapped up there should be enough to work with to make a decent build.
Please do some apex legends stuff
A nice comment
Make blackbeard from one piece
Suggestion to another build: The Witch King of Angmar. Some powers of the Witch-king:
- Silence:
"By Elbereth and Lúthien the Fair,’ said Frodo with a lasteffort, lifting up his sword, ‘you shall have neither the Ring nor me!’ Then the leader, who was now half across the Ford, stood up menacing in his stirrups, and raised up his hand. Frodo was stricken dumb. He felt his tongue cleave to his mouth, and his heart labouring. His sword broke and fell out of his shaking hand."
Here we already have the use of a spell rarely remembered in the book: in addition to having given a "silence" lv 2, it still made Frodo lose consciousness.
For those who play D&D 5e, we can make a list of some of the Witch King's abilities:
A) Black breath:
"He seemed to be asleep. ‘‘I thought I had fallen into deep water,’’ he says to me, when I shook him. Very queer he was, and as soon as I had roused him, he got up and ran back here like a hare.’ ‘I am afraid that’s true,’ said Merry, ‘though I don’t know what I said. I had an ugly dream, which I can’t remember. I went to pieces. I don’t know what came over me.’ ‘I do,’ said Strider. ‘The Black Breath"
B) An aura of Inexplicable Terror to the point of driving the armies of Gondor and generating a fighting frenzy for the allied forces:
"Some said that it could be seen, like a great black horseman, a dark shadow under the moon. Wherever he came a madness filled our foes, but fear fell on our boldest, so that horse and man gave way and fled."
C) Control of the weather to the point of generating a windstorm and a blizzard:
"Do not mount on this sea-monster! If they have them, let the seamen bring us food and other things that we need, and you may stay here till the Witch-king goes home. For in summer his power wanes; but now his breath is deadly, and his cold arm is long."
(...)
"But Arvedui did not take his counsel. He thanked him, and at parting gave him his ring [the Ring of Barahir], saying: 'This is a ring of worth beyond your reckoning. For its ancientry alone. It has no power, save the esteem in which those hold it who love my house. It will not help you, but if ever you are in need, my kin will ransom it with great store of all that you desire."
And a lightning storm in Minas Morgul:
"And Minas Morgul answered. There was a flare of livid lightnings: forks of blue flame springing up from the tower and from the encircling hills into the sullen clouds."
D) A certain ability of necromancy to imprison evil spirits for the creation of Barrow Wight.
E) Control over fire - to trigger an explosion spell on Grond:
"Then the Black Captain rose in his stirrups and cried aloud in a dreadful voice, speaking in some
forgotten tongue words of power and terror to rend both heart and stone. Thrice he cried. Thrice the great ram boomed. And suddenly upon the last stroke the Gate of Gondor broke. As if stricken by some blasting spell it burst asunder: there was a flash of searing lightning, and the doors tumbled in riven fragments to the ground. "
And create a flame-sword (Azor Ahai):
"Old fool!' he said. 'Old fool! This is my hour. Do you not know Death when you see it? Die now and curse in vain!' And with that he lifted high his sword and flames ran down the blade."
There is a writing by Tolkien that speaks (in letter 210) of the "Demonics force" that anabolized the witch king, to the point of making him an active weapon in addition to the innate fear he generated in opponents, so much so that he managed to approach a region "on fire" (fire being a weapon against the Nazgûl) in the siege of Minas Tirith.
Why even bother getting Elemental Weapon? There are more monsters vulnerable to silver in the Monster Manual than to an element. Unless your DM homebrews monsters or tweaks established Monster stats (nudge nudge,, wink wink,, DM's out there) you would find even True Strike to be more useful.
