So I've got hard outs to keep this stuff in check. The "script" can only be under 3 pages which roughly translates to 10 minutes. The first draft is what you get with this stuff, no revisions, it's pure slop. the video can only be edited in a single day which massively brings down the complexity and care I can allow myself in the edit.
I see a lot of people shilling their favorite version of Axl so I might as well chime in. +r Axl is the best Axl. 1. He can faint his unblockable. 2. He can combo off of his throw without meter. 3. When he has meter he can spend it to really force a situation with double digit plus frames with already safe moves using FRCs. For a few examples just FRC his charge sickle strike for 25% tension and enjoy your pressure while destroying most projectiles and being ready to cover jumps. He can also spend 25% meter to FRC his divekick Axl bomber as a delayed mid frame trap and pressure extender or ground bounce on hit.
Funnily enough, Strive Axl has more significant fullscreen options in sickle flash and winter mantis, AND a slow lingering projectile in whistling wind. Good for him! Charge dust is still his best button.
I learned so much from playing axl in strive. Just from having to react and learn how strive players play, learning when they jump, when they press buttons. It's a lot of fun and you feel like a god when you have a player inside your pocket
Hey made the vid! Just by name haha at 3:23 I also main venom and picked up axl to get ready for strive, ended up liking him a lot. I don't think people play him right, he's got great mid range buttons and his projectile is way too oppressive. His mixup is basic but if you condition your opponent you can shut down a lot of their options. I think he's an easy switch from venom since he has similar tools. I agree he's less flowcharty. I think a lot of ppl just think he's a reactive zoner and don't realize he can be really oppressive and dangerous at mid range where some of his slower buttons are hard to punish cuz of the distance.
And having more complicated characters that are "harder" feel easier for some like me who can have more to work around. Simple characters might be easy to understand but require a better grasp of their gameplan so i just gotta get good
I should get back into this game. But everything has become exhausting. Even watching this video before writing a comment. But Axl was my main in the short time I played Axl in Strive. Played in some online tourneys. Even managed to almost get out of first round a few times.
I have been feeling this very hard lately, especially since I play Johnny. Playing the best character in the game is cool and all, but it definitely stagnates your ability to improve in certain areas and I've certainly felt a level of imposter syndrome when I win. Branching out to characters like Baiken, I-no, and Millia have been helpful in resetting my mental and giving myself a new perspective on the game. I go into every new character not with the intention to swap completely, but also being open to anything happening. And in the end, I always miss my boy and come back Johnny. All is well that ends well I suppose.
Curious how you'd find Strive Axl. His combo routes are a lot more varied, he has access to an instant overhead. And he gets left right 50/50's off of TKB knockdowns. TKB is pissbaby easy once you figure out how it's done in strive. Rensen goes full screen, and has a true-on-block followup that does massive chip damage. He has less command normals, and is a lot simpler, but the tools he has are very engaging.
also the trick to the tk bomber loops: you're cancelling into the jump, but *linking* into the bomber. you wanna buffer the motion, then press the H riiiight after hitstop ends. (aim for the frame axl starts rising from the ground.) if you press while in hitstop, you'll get the jH. good luck!
As someone that absolutely LOVES Axl but has never really found another Zoner that feels anything like he does (and as a result has avoided the fate of being labelled "The Zoner Player") I think you explained really really well the difference between him and the rest of the archetype that makes him specifically so compelling and active to play. He feels to me like a longer range extrapolation of the mid range bullies and "Honest Mids" characters I tend to gravitate towards (Orie, Katalina, Hakumen, Xrd Sin, etc) where you are using the threat of your buttons to force people into specific routes that you can then react to and punish them for. Maybe one day I'll try applying that mindset to other zoners though, see if I have a similar experience you did going the other direction.
Perhaps a long shot, but if you like putting things on the screen that people need to deal with, and punish them for choosing poorly, perhaps you'd like Guile in Street Fighter 6. Or, seeing as you mention Granblue, maybe Vane is worth a look. He's not a pure zoner, but he also has strong options from mid-screen the opponent needs to respect.
@@shajita I did actually try both of them! Guile I played for a while since if the zoners released at launch he felt the most natural in my hands, and Vane I tried when he came out but dropped pretty quickly. It mostly came down to just kinda not liking how they looked and getting bored with them after a while. Vane especially just wasn't as cool or fun for me as Katalina is. I appreciate the recommendations though! They are both close to characters if like but need just a bit more in the sauce or visual design departments for me to want to keep playing.
i have two questions for anyone watching who can give me any input whatsoever: - is it worth it to learn xrd as a completely new player in 2024? - how the hell do i start learning venom from scratch? there's too much information/resources online and idk where to start
@@thecoolertoadman we can play whenever! Rensen yrc is really good for locking you down, and the enormous cancel window for 2d allows for a lot of pressure with little meter, if done right you can loop rensen yrc up to 4 times, to run mixups.
axl has funny combos but his damage is unsatisfying. his combos feel really good and i like the specific angles he has in xrd. i do wish he carried over his + on hit 6h in strive. i think he's closer to a midrange fighter than a zoner, especially in strive where it's a lot easier to unga bunga into axl
The most painful part is that Strive Axl really feels like a complete package, getting rid of his more haphazard lackluster tools for a kit that actually works AND he gets some sauce? Great, but Strive is just... not it for me as a fan of +R. If only it didn't take ArcSys twenty years to realise that stupid crossup overhead neutral skip and weird counter that doesn't do much as a reversal aren't things that fit onto Axl.
if this is slop content I love me some slop
Its high quality sloo
-blender main switches to a more interactive character
-axl
and another finger curls on the monkeys paw
There IS an EU axl character specialist called Penguinator from finland who will make you freeze in fear of a good axl
That +R video is going to be so peak
9 minute video explaining that he just wants to play axl, only leon massey
Sparrowhawk stance is similar to smoking crack.
I had an actual knee jerk reaction at 1:44 because Ratanuki is my friend and i tole a glase at his sname as the video cut holy shit
i already bought xrd a lil while ago. kept trying to play ranked but no one was there. i'll try the player lobbies now. thanks leon.
7:03 the better phrase would be like “gap closers”
Happy to see you found it in you to do some smaller stuff on the side. I hope you don't fall into the trap of sinking too much time on this.

Yes, but in Strive Axl has proper pants

Wow.
Thanks for this new episode of getting good at Plus R, Goh Low.
It was very informative.
I play axl in strive for this reason. He plays so differently and i actually have fun.

Maybe! I'm planning to (not every week but maybe once a month) do something like this where I give a character a dedicated go
still waiting for the zato video
That would require learning Zato Kip, and I am very very very lazy (one day)
Secretly a video about plateaus 🧐

Ive never picked a zoner in any fighting games, almost always rushdown. But axl in strive is absolutely jammer
