"If you hit the wrong note, play it twice, that way they will think you meant it." Miles Davis to Robben Ford before Ford's first gig with him.
Jerry definitely did that!
One of the first things I learned getting into improv.
I LOVE this lesson. The structure makes it easy for me to follow and the little things Jerry does make it so much more than the technical part of the song. You really nailed the 1990 JGB tone with that delay. Thanks again Ian for all that you do, you really over delivered in this one!
Thank you for incarnating Jerry on this cold December morning. Just made my day.
great tune, no one teaches improv over jerry ballads even though its some of his greatest playing. Love the lessons on slower stuff like this and crazy fingers. Would love to see something for Stella. Thanks!
I love your lessons. I have learned much from them. You turned me on to Greatful Dead. I never listened to them before.
Jerry does the doodle doodle doo's at the end of the chords that distinguished him
I've always loved Jerry's version of this tune. Great lesson Ian, happy holidayze to you and yours bud.
Easy,
Slim
Can I just say it (since nobody has mentioned it yet), "Get a Fresca" is the line of the lesson! Love it! Also as somebody did mention it above - Do a Stella Blue lesson like this!
Was waiting for someone to appreciate the Fresca 😬👍
Great lesson, please keep reintroducing Jerry focused lesson content🙏 man, I miss Jerry live😔 happy holidays to you and yours, Ian🤙🤙
YOu trimmed you beard. Looking sharp, G. thanks for sharing jerry's mind with us!
Mission in the rain blows me away everytime...
I love your videos dude. I aspire for your level of understanding of the guitar.
One of my favorite JGB tunes. Thanks a bunch Ian. I love jamming on these chords and you've given me new insight into them. Beautiful playing.
Sean Costello's version of this song is awesome
This will come in so handy when I convince my band to play this song......which of course will never happen (although I wish it would). #makeamericagratefulagain
Hi Ian. I have been playing guitar for 50 years now. I am a competent chord player, but could never get my head around lead playing so, in 1976 I switched to bass and spent the next 40 or so years concentrating on that.
Having now hung up my gigging shoes I have now got myself a modest recording set up together an am now revisiting the guitar. I am delighted to have found your RUclips channel. Your tutoring is excellent and for the first time in 50 years I am starting to understand the building blocks of lead guitar playing and, under your tutelage, have been using the lockdown time here in the UK to start to develop some skills as a lead guitarist.
I have tried several RUclips channels, and whilst I am sure they are skilled people, they haven't worked for me, so I was delighted to come across your channel and, as a result of the clarity and high quality of your teaching I am starting to achieve an aim that I have had for half a century!
You are, sir, a titan amongst guitar tutors! keep up the good work!😎
Love that triple pull off like in Touch of Grey. This is one of your very best, Ian. I could listen to you all day. You do Jerry proud.
Nice playing very Jerry-like always love ur in the mind of videos.
Best guitar instructor on YT. Ian, you are a godsend! I love the clarity of your explanations; mind-blown again!!
Very interesting lesson. It sounded great to start, but then you moved to the higher octave and it instantly sounded like it was right out of a JGB performance. Love your channel!!!
Well thank you very much for now finally helping me decide, after all these years, which Dylan song is my favorite. Just beautiful.
So good my man! Love it!
Awesome! Happy holidays!
Love this lesson Ian!
Is there any way I can get on the waiting list for online one on one lessons?
I've tried multiple ways to contact you with no luck.
I'm a huge Phish/Trey fan and like the Dead stuff too.
I've been playing for 15+ years. I've tried multiple guitar teachers, but I think you would be the absolute best fit. Please let me know!
👍 Good friend Stich. 🙂 💫. I take it for me to playlist learn electric guitar. 🙂 💫 Thanks friend for sharing. Rock on!
Sounds beautiful.
Blue grass I'm a pilgrim.
I feel the same about Dylan
What does he say? Going to watch later
@@JFrank1994 just that Garcia blows his mind, also this is a very famous Dylan song
Dylan is amazing, his guitar and harmonica playing are as incredible as his lyrics. pure genius!!
Dylan admired jerrys guitar playing. Jerry admired dylans song writing
Jerry Garcia, a Dylan-nut, would appreciate the song choice: a romantic song, with a mellow, lovely lead performed with the JGB.
TOM SEGURA!
AMAZING ❤
Thanks Ian for such fun insight. The charts will be enormously useful for my slow brain/finger work. Best wishes.
I love covering this song. Great choice!!!!!!
Thanks!
Very Very Nice! Thanks! Another one of my all time favorites I would love to see your take on would be "Rocking Chair" from the "Garcia & Grisman" album. Absolutely phenomenal! Thank You Very Much!
I bet John watches your videos.
Much Better Sound Quality today.
Always appreciatr all dead insight. Ty. Hope all is well
Another gr8 lesson by a gr8 teacher! Is the backing track available for the song, which would make it easier for us less talented dudes to practice over?
I love how the F#m gives my ear the impression that the beginning of the progression is Dmaj> Dmaj7> D7. F#m is only missing the D. lol.
It is so cool how our brains interpret chord changes.
how much are you loving those Phred guitars? I have the ernesto with upgraded pickups and it's hard to put down.
This is probably your best video yet. You are a master educator. Thank you so much stitch.
This was such a great lesson. I saw Jerry play with John Kahn at a beautiful concert hall in Washington DC in 1982. His performance of this tune in particular was spellbinding. What a great lesson. Is this a foreshadowing of the Jerry Master Class? I love it. Thank you so much. Ordering charts now. Stoked to be a new patreon member. Very cool idea. The Patreon link you put below is kind of hard to find. Looks great. Looking forward to this.
Love it. Great demo. You sound like Jerry. For major mode A shape is left of the A triad and G shape Is to the right. D shape left of D triad and C shape to the right. That’s how I quickly locate and play them. (Minors are shifted to the right 3 frets, so A shape to the right, C to left). This is a perfect and fun song to practice this and chord tone noodling. For I-IV progression I use the GCEAD circle of fourths on the CAGED shapes so I can stay in the same position. Knowing these tricks and chord tone playing on top of scale playing makes guitar so much fun and interesting. Thanks for the idea to play more Dead man!
This is awesome - I'm just digging into chromaticism in my playing, so good timing with this one! The "chromatic enclosure" concept is a light bulb moment for me. I'd love to see you delve into Jerry's chromaticism in Sugaree and/or a blues tune such as Tore Up. Thanks so much, I've learned a lot from your videos. :-)
Wish I could donate! Thank you
That was something special and shows me there is so far to go. Enjoyed it so much Thankyou
My playing has improved so much since I started watching your videos. The way you explain and demonstrate is beyond words. Thank you so much. Honestly, you're the best :)
So nice to hear. Thanks for the kind words
Dude. You are cool. Thanks man.
First. Happy hilolidsys stitch
thanks for this..... great lesson
You are a blessing. Your music and positive attitude warm my soul.
Amazing analysis! Well Done. His playing always boggled my mind. I can only dream of being able to "zone out" as you did.
you shouldnt even do a lesson, i could listen to you play over that all day!!!
Thank You Stitch , You got it.
gonna have to watch this again, my head hurts lol
Yessss! Dude thank you!
With a typo even
It is Wednesday :- )
Hypnotising
Good stuff
Nice shirt! I live about 10 miles from Mammoth Cave!
Absolutely beautiful area
Fantastic channel - I have learned so much from you - thanks a bunch mate!!!
Glad to help! Have you seen my new Deal video?
@@StichMethodGuitar Not yet, but I will definitely check it out - I am a huge fan of the band, Jerry's playing in particular!! - I saw the band a bunch of times back in the 80s - my last show was in 94 at Rich Stadium, a year before Jerry passed - I didn't think he was ever quite the same after his coma - anyway, thanks a bunch and keep up the wonderful work - !!!
hmm the Dylan songbook its a G/A chord ... did Garcia go for the full on A?
Probably A7 which is an A chord with a G in it
Stich is the best learn to play guitar on You Tube. Who wants to memorize endless lengthy demonstrations of tabs. So ridiculous. Sticth tells you how to solo like Jerry and leaves it up to you to do the improv work with the new tools you have.
Thanks Tommy. So glad you enjoy the lessons
What guitar youre playing?
Phred Instruments Deadbolt
That is a sick instrument there!
FRESCA!!
😬👍
Well his main ingredient! His heroin. Theres no dought he was meandering thru a solo. I'm not being rude at all.the man bore that demon most of his life.but I'm just saying I'm sure it played a big part on how he heard the music he played.
Idk about that. Jerrys playing was kicked up a notch when he went clean... and it is true. 87-90 was much better than jerrys smacked up early 80s playing. After the coma when he was clean, his playing was much greater and more focused. Less meandering and more intent on the notes he chose
Bro this is the first greatful dead video etc I have watched with you… I can tell your really inspired. I hope you never stop doing this.. and how thankful I am for the knowledge! Always man
I just purchased the scale chart but can’t seem to find where to find it to download it. Ron.romanowicz10@
