I LOVE this lesson. The structure makes it easy for me to follow and the little things Jerry does make it so much more than the technical part of the song. You really nailed the 1990 JGB tone with that delay. Thanks again Ian for all that you do, you really over delivered in this one!

Hi Ian. I have been playing guitar for 50 years now. I am a competent chord player, but could never get my head around lead playing so, in 1976 I switched to bass and spent the next 40 or so years concentrating on that.
Having now hung up my gigging shoes I have now got myself a modest recording set up together an am now revisiting the guitar. I am delighted to have found your RUclips channel. Your tutoring is excellent and for the first time in 50 years I am starting to understand the building blocks of lead guitar playing and, under your tutelage, have been using the lockdown time here in the UK to start to develop some skills as a lead guitarist.
I have tried several RUclips channels, and whilst I am sure they are skilled people, they haven't worked for me, so I was delighted to come across your channel and, as a result of the clarity and high quality of your teaching I am starting to achieve an aim that I have had for half a century!
You are, sir, a titan amongst guitar tutors! keep up the good work!😎

This was such a great lesson. I saw Jerry play with John Kahn at a beautiful concert hall in Washington DC in 1982. His performance of this tune in particular was spellbinding. What a great lesson. Is this a foreshadowing of the Jerry Master Class? I love it. Thank you so much. Ordering charts now. Stoked to be a new patreon member. Very cool idea. The Patreon link you put below is kind of hard to find. Looks great. Looking forward to this.

  • @JunkYour925

Love it. Great demo. You sound like Jerry. For major mode A shape is left of the A triad and G shape Is to the right. D shape left of D triad and C shape to the right. That’s how I quickly locate and play them. (Minors are shifted to the right 3 frets, so A shape to the right, C to left). This is a perfect and fun song to practice this and chord tone noodling. For I-IV progression I use the GCEAD circle of fourths on the CAGED shapes so I can stay in the same position. Knowing these tricks and chord tone playing on top of scale playing makes guitar so much fun and interesting. Thanks for the idea to play more Dead man!

This is awesome - I'm just digging into chromaticism in my playing, so good timing with this one! The "chromatic enclosure" concept is a light bulb moment for me. I'd love to see you delve into Jerry's chromaticism in Sugaree and/or a blues tune such as Tore Up. Thanks so much, I've learned a lot from your videos. :-)

Idk about that. Jerrys playing was kicked up a notch when he went clean... and it is true. 87-90 was much better than jerrys smacked up early 80s playing. After the coma when he was clean, his playing was much greater and more focused. Less meandering and more intent on the notes he chose
