- This is an update of a previous Nathan Chen video.
Olympic figure skating is a brutal sport, and the most difficult jump, popularized by young phenom Nathan Chen, has become extremely controversial.
For many fans, the quadruple jump has come to represent the death of artistry and the rise of risky and sometimes dangerous athleticism within men's figure skating.
In the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic games, we can almost certainly expect to see a lot of falls and possibly injuries due to the difficulty of these jumps.

Not sure why you'd say that Nathan was the one creating the quad craze? It was actually Jin Boyang who started to pressure all other skaters to put in more quads and more types of quads in the 2015/2016 season where he entered seniors and promptly becamse the first to ever land the quad lutz, had six overall quads in both his programs and three different kinds of quads. as a comparison, Yuzuru Hanyu (olympic champion and world record holder at that time) only had four overall quads and only two types of them. next season (2016/2017), Yuzuru upped his programs to 6 quads of 3 different kinds, matching Boyang's previous numbers. Nathan only entered seniors at that season.
I mean, I understand why you take Nathan as an example, him being American and him having the most planned quads in the field right now, but saying that he was the one making the quad jump popular is just not true unless you only look at US figure skating.
True. It was Boyang and the Chinese attempt to dominate the male figure skating, that created this situation. I bet they will be the first to accomplish quadruple Axel too, which will probably put Nathan out of the game for the next Olympics.
o6ina As far as I know, Yuzuru is the only one who's training the quad Axel. Boyang still has his three types of quads (Toe, Salchow, Lutz) and has actually been focusing more on his skating skills and entertainment skills than adding more quads. Like, right now the one pressuring the field really is Nathan with his six quads in the free alone, but the only ones of the top six who are adding new types of quads are the two Japanese skaters, Shoma and Yuzuru.
Totally agree! I also saw a video of Time, it was titled "Meet Nathan Chen, the Figure Skater Who Brought Athleticism to Artistry"... Like excuse me, who? He doesn't even claim to be all that so why would you ignore and disrespect all the ice skaters who've come before him, by making such an unnecessary statement? If they keep over-praising nathan chen like this, he's gonna become overrated real quick. They also put too much pressure on him, he's only 18, they should give the boy some space to improve and perfect his skills.
DineLade Jin Bo Yang is actually doing himself a favor! His jumps are clean enough that he can focus on other skills such as artistry to give a well rounded performance. We all know Yuzuru and Shoma are well rounded skaters so it’s good to see Jin Boyang making advancements towards improving his overall performance, something I personally wish to see Nathan Chen do seeing as he relies heavily on Quads but is severely lacking in artistry in comparison to other top tier skaters such as Javier Fernandez who is arguably the most artistically skilled skater right now.

I really like that he focuses on his artistry and skating skills and when I watched his free skate yesterday, I even laughed because of his expressions and movements in that one part. I'm also a fan of his jumps, they are really consistent and big and a wonder to watch.
And I agree, I hope Nathan will focus more on his skating skills and artistry, too, as well as getting higher GOEs on his elements. People were impressed by his free skate yesterday but they forget that both Yuzuru and Javier have gotten higher points with less quads in their programs.
No, you got it wrong. There's nothing wrong with quadruple jumps. It's how the judging system treats these jumps (and just jumps in general) that some skating fans find troublesome. Plus, can we stop pretending that it's Nathan who brings this quad revolution to this sport, because it's neither him, nor it is a revolution.

Answer to the last question: Yes. Just watch Yuzuru. He is one of the most artistic if not THE most artistic skater the world has ever seen, and he does pretty much any quad out there, and says after this season he is going to focus on getting that quad axle.
That's not the point? If it's only one person doing it, who is going to retire someday, what is the point then of calling it artistic if no one is is capable of making it art via their interpretation

There is so much wrong with this video I can't even describe it.
Just one thing. Again, Nathan has his part in quad race, but it was Boyang Jin who probably started the biggest wave yet everyone ignores him and gushes about Nathan instead! Also, the quad itself is not the problem. The problem are programs like Nathan's when there is nothing between the jumps. Yuzuru, Javi, Shoma, and yes, even Boyang Jin combine artistry and sport much better than Nathan.

And it should be about both, it's amazing and exciting to see the men jump really high and fast but it's the artistry that makes it complete and actually interesting to watch.
these are my two cents, but i think quads don't and shouldn't diminish the artistry in figure skating. you can have both huge jumps and beautiful choreography all in one program. I would recommend checking out Yuzuru Hanyu, Kim Yuna, Shoma Uno, Boyang Jin, P. Chiddy, etc. they have very expressive programs, all while pushing the sport to the next level. there's no law saying that jumps and artistry hold an inverse relationship, so one shouldn't confine these elements as opposites
The problem is when judges dont seem to get that lol. Just cuz you can land a quad doesn't mean your whole program is is artistic. Pcs and tech s are so unbalanced. And yhen now we also have the same thing with pairs now.
I'd also recommend along with the ones you mentioned, Jason Brown and Stephane Lambiel. They showcase perfection in what is supposed to make up half the score, without the more flashy and impressive looking quads (but still having great jumps). It really shows what those that are lacking in artistry are missing, and helps show how impressive those that can do both to an extremely high level really are.

Skating is a sport. The greatest athletes are always trying to push the limit of what’s possible. That’s the whole point.
L C So boring tho, if it’s just people jumping around. The artistry of the sport does matter in my opinion. I think a lot of people would also lose interest in the sport if it loses it’s artistic factor.
and in soccer its just people kicking a ball. if you find it boring, don't watch. i find it incredible. lots of people can be artistic on ice (including myself). but not everyone can jump.
jessie liu - if you're into artistry, then go to a theatre or a museum. Sport is sport. If the artistry takes the priority over the technical difficulty, then we start watching an artistic performance, not a sport. I'm totally fine with a ban on quad jumps in figure skating or a ban on any jumps but consequently let's exclude figure skating from the olympic games instead of pretending artistry is a kind of sport.

He crushed no one, except the scoring system. I really recognize the fact he's able to do all quads at this young age, it's surely incredible. But he needs maturity in his programs and more artistry. He could never break the H&L world record, even though he's making 6 quads in his program, and this is telling everything. if he could do 6 quads perfecty executed and a really beautiful program to watch then it will be so nice. But I don't even know if it's possible or human body to do that. Still, I will acknowledge him as equal to Hanyu and Fernandez when he'll reach some kind of perfection in his execution, which doesnt have. yet.
Jamie Bridle He said that b/c he crushed the SP, he went all out in the FS and had no fear. If he did a decent SP, he may have felt the pressure again and crushed the FS. Then, what would you say? If yuzuru did not injure himself 2 months before and just started jumping three weeks before the game, he might broke the WR again. who knows?

As a figure skater I would say Boyang Jin's quad is much better quality than Nathan's. Huge elevation and textbook technique. I'm sick of seeing US media render Chen as the figure skating king, sorry but he's not. He only wins GP because Hanyu was not there, and he has never break Hanyus records.

Chen just broke one of Hanyu’s records today at Helsinki. Although I can’t help but feel that Chen’s skating mainly relies on his quads and tend to lack in artistry. Chen still has much to learn in that aspect. Yuzuru on the their hand has not only exemplary skating skills, but also the ability to convey a story and emotion through the grace and elegance of his choreography. Eventually, Chen will surpass many of Yuzuru’s records due to his high technical scores, but as a whole, I still believe that Yuzuru is a superior skater. He proves that ice skating is not about making as many difficult jumps as possible, and that is what I love about him.

I know yuzuru hanyu is not only doing jumps but actually showing the art of ice skating.
The fact that 17 year old Trusova attempted FIVE quads as a female skater… and apparently she does all of them perfect in practice and training but does stumble in the competition. But apparently she stumbled because she OVERTURNED which I think is in some ways, even more impressive.
The two top record holders at the moment are two of the most artistic skaters in the field right now

Nicole Braun yeah, I'm so annoyed at this video and at the press in general for having this opinion that lots of jumps = no artistry. You can have both and also, you can't win with just the jumps. Nathan had 6 quads in his free at the Olympics but couldn't beat the world record which was made with 4 quads. Other things still count.
With Yuzuru Hanyu, artistry in figure skating will never die.
As a figure skater myself and knowing multiple Olympians, yes. It's still about the art. Routines are not just about jumps, they have footwork, spins, upper body, etc. We practice hours on end to master and perfectly execute each motion of our bodys. The art is how we control our bodys. And how hard it is to do so.

Suzanne I agree. I remember when jumps were high, open, and spectacularly graceful. People were actually marked down for the "wrapping" that is now necessary for triples and quadruples. Skating used to be half art, half sport. Now it is pretty much about technical feats and possibilities. I guess tastes change.
But figure skating isn't all about Artistry. Artistic Gymnastics literally las it in the name, but figure skating is an ever evolving sport. People thought that triples would ruin the sport too...
The artistry is the shittiest part, gymnastics is so much more interesting without all the fruity flourishes in between. If human can do it, why not?

Doubles, triples evolved the same way.The sport has two elements technical and artistic element. He had taken it to whole new level. If one can't skill this then they font have to, but He deserves super points for this physics defying technique.

The toughest injury I had as a figure skater was a fall on my steps. Steps! Sports are dangerous, figure skating is one of them. There is no clear border - "it's still safe up to this point but from here on". If a person is physically capable, they should push the boundaries of sport.
Its mora about the points, for quad jumps you get almost 10~13 points, (quad axel is 15 points) triples are at most (Lutz) 6 points but tripple toeloop is 4.3 points, so if someone does 6 quads (Nathan) opposed to someone maybe attempting one because their jumps aren't all that well the differens on tecnical score is around 25 points (if everything is executed properly) and you can't make that up with anything else, if you have many quads and you succeed your component automaticly tend to be on the higher side and everythime you make an mistake components will get lower, and on average hanyu gets around 94 points or so for components, not many people get more points for components than that and it will probably be even lower (90 or so at best) (Hanyu and javier get pretty high components) and even for Hanyu it's difficult to beat Nathan because Nathan has more quads. Don't start with spins and step sequences the highest rated spin (CCoSp4) gets 3.5 points and step sequence is for lv4 3.9 points, so since the introduction of the quads it became a must if you want to be able to win in the male competitions.
so imo ISU need to change the rules to restrict the amount of quads, or give them lower points, rather not the latter because it is still dificult al all hell and I think they should get rewarded for it but male skaters often don't pay too mutch attention to their transitions in order to consentrate on their quads, again Hanyu and Javier are the rare skaters with very high performance and I think that is thanks to their coach but I'd love too see other skaters peform beautifully and get rewarded for it too
Tikika Quads are almost physics defying content and they deserve high score.Remember FS is a sport with two elements : technical and artistic. For the level of difficulty it's awarded. It's no just a ballet! Even that has technical element.

Bob Mag I know and that is why I want figure skating to be a sport where people with high technical ability and people with high performance can win, but now it feels like it's impossible to win if you don't land at least some quads. of course to win a certain technical level is required but It shouldn't be so that the ones with highest technical skill always win. but that's just how I see it

I think the mens free skate in the olympics was a good example that fogure skate isnt all about jumps,, nathen chen attempted 6 quads and he still got in 5th i think,, while Yuzuru Hanyu did the standard 4 and won
only because nathan was 20 points behind in the short. The six quads in his long was why he moved up in the long and actually won the freeskate by several points
Because Nathan totally screwed up his SP and didn't complete a single jumping pass? He was lucky he advanced to the free with what he presented then.
Nathan won that free skate by 8 more points than Hanyu. Yes, he won it with 5 clean quads. It's the short program that costed him the medal.

Yuzuru pushed the envelope in terms of men’s artistry and quad jumps. He has superior PCS scores, and from 2015, he really challenged other men to perform more quads, when he added at least 3 quads in a FP. But- they were quad toes and salchows. This was unheard of. Also, his jumps, when well-executed, were graceful, so they weren’t ugly at all. So I think that quads are important. What makes figure skating an Olympic sport is the jumps and other elements. I do not want to see another Evan Lysacek outcome ever again. No offense.
Has it ever been about artistry? I'm 42 years old and from my earliest memories of watching figure skating, EVERY routine by anyone, male or female, is about the jumps. The stuff "in between" is hardly ever commented on. Honestly, I think that's primarily because it's easier to judge technicality than artistry. Artistry is completely subjective. Technicality is objectively measurable. Did you land the thing or not and how cleanly did you do so?
Why fishing when you can buy fish in the market? Why learning classical music while rapping is more popular?
Not every person enjoy the same things. Many people like you who probably just come to the conclusion that figure skating is all about jumping, but there are many true fan out there who care about the artistry of the performance.

@@lonelyspirit9532 Sorry, you misunderstood me. Or maybe I just didn't make myself clear. I mean the _media_ make it about the jumps and virtually ignore the artistry in between. Also, I think it's easier to judge technical skills objectively moreso than artistry. So people tend to focus on that more. It's easier to say, "He/she didn't do that well," about something with well defined parameters. When it comes to artistry though, it's mostly subjective and each person has their own idea of what's beautiful, graceful, awe-inspiring, etc.

I don't know the most about the technical side of skating, but what makes the jumps different is what edge you're on and how you enter the jump, not what leg you take off from. Some people jump on the opposite leg from others (i.e. Gabriel Daleman)

Personally, I love the quads when they're properly incorporated into a beautifully choreographed program...which is the whole point anyway.
I love the video and the editing - but i absolutely disagree that quads lack artistry - achieving what the likes of chen and yuzuru in their quads to make it look effortless is pure artistry - i am into challenging the sports and pushing progress into it. Being an athlete you need to practice more to be able to perform it - so let’s appreciate the hardwork of these athletes and not make impressions that we think it needs to be regulated since its dangerous.
I too don't believe that quads lack artistry, but just scoring wise some things irk me. For example, spins which is an element required atleast 2 times in the free program, it takes time, it saps energy like jumps, and it also make use of muscle power, the point is they might be easier than jumps but they are still not easy easy, but even the highest scores combination spins are still measly 3.5 I guess and what is up with that?
Jumps on an average get a higher goe when executed well, but all spins, step sq, and choreo sq barely get a goe above 2 almost 95% of time. Why is that? What are the judges exactly looking for execution wise in them. And 1 level increase in these elements means a 1 point increase in score, so what does it matter whether a long step sq is level 3 or 4 when more points can be acquired by doing a jump well in goe only. It's these small things I think which are affecting artistry, because all these elements too need tremendous skills and athleticism, less than jumps for sure but still points on these shouldn't be so low.
Figure skating is definitely losing its artistry. There was a time when Jeffrey Buttle, who didn't even attempt a quad in his program, won the world title. Many skaters just run around the ice to attempt a quad without any body expression and it's like a jump contest, not figure skating. Not only that. The rule that states Tano jumps have to get at least 2+ GOE is also corrupting figure skating's artistry. Skaters are just throwing in Tano jumps meaninglessly. I mean...sure it is more difficult to jump like that but does that really mean anything? There was a time when compulsory skating was one of the routines and the judges valued skating skill over any other technicality but now....I repeat it. It's a jumping contest, not figure skating.
Yeah but you still have skaters like yuzuru who add components only because they are beautiful. Like the ina bauer and hydro blading. He adds artistic components and enhances them with quads. I agree that most figure skaters seem to really just be skating around without much thought or artistry between jumps. But you see someone like Yuzuru skate? It's totally different.

October 22,2022 American 17 year old Ilia Malinin landed the second ever quadruple axel in competition without so much as a wobble.
Then he did it again in the same routine.
Yuzuru hanyu does quads whilst keeping artistry, you can see in his performances for him it’s not all about the jumps, you can see his passion in his performances and he puts just as much effort into his floor routine and transitions as he does jumps, if you watch his gala performance you can see that he’s so much more than just quads and jumps , he only did one delayed axel and one triple and honestly it’s one of my favourite performances of his, you can see his love for it , the way he moves its like it comes to him so freely , he doesn’t even hesitate before he jumps and It’s like he trusts himself and the ice so much , he moves so gracefully he will always be the greatest in my opinion and so humble .
Every sport progresses. Figure skating for women was pushed forward by Midori Ito, Tonya Harding and the handful of other women who landed triple axels, it was changed for men by added Quadruples. Its a sport, that's why it is in the Olympics. Its a badge of honour for your insane athleticism. Snowboarding was changed by Shaun White, who added insanely hard tricks into the superpipe, ultimately making the sport even more well respected and challenging (and what athlete doesn't like challenge? Let sports progress and evolve. Soon, maybe even women will be doing quads, some day...?
they are doing quads now in juniors but we'll see how it translates as they grow. Medvedeva's training a quad sal, Kihira I think is working on 4T (?) so, it's coming. It is dicking up the artistry aspect of it for the time being, but it is what it is: growing pains in an evolving sport.

Yuzu and Javi do quads perfectly and their routines are pure art. The problem is the scoring. If they scored execution higher then routines performed well would get the score they deserve and there wouldn't be a need to push for more higher value jumps in a program

Things changed a lot. I think a very few could do the compulsory figures nowadays. Also, 100 years ago doing figure skating did not damage the body so badly in such a short amount of time. Ladies already retire at age 17. 😕

Artistry is subjective. Since figure skating is considered a sport, the jumps are important for technical ability.
I hv noticed that artistry had gone down a bit. It's mostly just skaters going around in circles and jumping without, it seems much transitions in between.

Looking back I still think that quads may be incredibly difficult, but they take such a toll on the body and cause so many falls. I get that whilst looking back at the history of most sports an athletic improvement was possible and continues on.

Lia Guzman the back flip is actually banned because it can damage the rink. It is much easier to do than a quad jump.

For me, an added flip will not make a sport "ugly", it just makes it harder, it's different.
I think the quadruple jumps saved figure skating. I grew up watching Scott Hamilton, Kristie Yamaguchi, ... After they and their peers of that era left it got boring. Then there was a buzz about a female skater who did backflips. But by then you could google her performances without having to sit through the entire show.- which is leave audience without a baseline of what to expect or an appreciation of the sport itself.
Then the quadruple jumps created a new buzz but again in the age of RUclips they can just look up that part that everyone is talking about and be done being interested. The programs are going to have to include the whole package once again in order for a viewer to be interested to look and see the next program, click on different skater and see what they have...

There’s nothin wrong with bigger jumps. It’s all up to how the judges judge them and whether the figure skater themselves wants to keep the artistry. If you look at figure skaters like Nathan Chen who pride on doing the quad, that’s great and it should be rewarded since quads are harder. The only problem is that figure skaters that make the quad rotation but can’t land the jump get rewarded bigger those who land a triple. And because of the point system it makes way for those like Nathan Chen who’s young (less experience artistry) but good athletically. But there’s can be balance between artistry and quads. Looking at the current Olympic champions Yuzuru Hanyu, he didn’t have as many quads and types of quads ready compared to others. But artistically he has some of most difficult footings and whatnot so if you ever compare his free program score to say Shoma Uno(he is similar technically) Shoma Uno is on par(even exceed by around .4) on the technical score. But in the component score Yusuf hanyu exceeds a more. That’s why it’s more in the point system that’s the problem. And the point system is constantly going to change(there’s already alot of arguments on how though). The argument that quads are the death of artistry is the same as the old argument people had on triples( this more on the female side). Sports is constantly adapting as people explore how they can be better. Same goes for figure skating
It's called progress and moving the sport forward. Yes artistry and style are equally important but our sport has to move forward. Hanyu, Uno, Fernandez, Chan all prove you can do quads and still have good artistry, style and skating skills. Look back at old videos of skaters from way back - Sonia Henie, Dick Button, Don Jackson and they did fewer and more simple jumps than today but also their artistry is not as good as today's skaters.
I suppose the era when artistry became really important, for the men anyway, was the 1970's and 1980's when we had the likes of Curry, Cranston, Tickner, Cousins.
Free skating both artistically and technically has improved since skaters no longer have to do school figures and so can concentrate solely on free skating. Now I'm not saying getting rid of figures was a good thing, in many ways it was not, but old archive footage (plenty of it here on YT) from the 1930's to the 1960's show that skaters were actually less artistic back then.
Oh and let's stop pretending quads are something new. It's now 30 years since Kurt Browning landed the first quad in competition in 1988 Worlds and Tim Goebel was doing 3 quads in his free skate by the late 1990's and Orser, Boitano, Fadeev and Sabovcik were attempting them in the mid 1980's.
He did it greatly, no doubt he deserved the gold. Like a feather. Almost effortless.

Quartz... thank you for this. Very well done. I love watching figure skating but not sure of whats all going on with the different jumps, etc. This opened my eyes. I have been seeing more jumps than I care to (though it truly has opened up my eyes to the athletic strength of these skaters). I feel part of the reason I truly watch is for the artistic interpretation as well. That's quickly diminishing. Only a very few can jump all around and still have you enthralled in their artistic ability as well any more.
i'm so sick of american media overrating nathan chen, yes he's an outstanding athlete but he clearly lacks artistry. and figure skating is a combination of both.
And I'm so sick of idiots like you claiming that Nathan lacks artistry. He simply has a different style of artistry. If you want dramatic, flowery, ornate, and feminine skating, go for Yuzuru. If you're in a completely different mood and want subtle, clean, more masculine, and precision artistry then go for Nathan. Something doesn't have to be in-your-face obvious to be art, btw. Learn to appreciate the fact that there's more than one style of art.

Also Yuzuru's skating can also be very powerful and masculine as well, he's just graceful when skating. And lots of other very masculine skaters are also graceful skaters. @@divinearia1601 there is no way you think that yuzu is ISU's favorite. he is always massively underscored in basically any and every skating competition. yuzuru does beautiful transitions (rockers, twizzles, etc. out of quads), has textbook perfect jumps (no under-rotation, pre-rotation, deep edges), at least uses different edges when he skates, doesn't do just crossovers, mohawks and three turns into jumps, and he is still underscored. one of his best quad sals was only given a +3 GOE, when he landed it perfectly with a spread eagle entrance and rocker exit. ur comment is actually counterproductive by saying that nathan only won this season's olympics due to hanyu receiving "karma", and not saying that nathan deserved his medal?????

I love how non-skaters think of all quads as one jump when in fact there are 5 (in order from easiest to hardest): salchow, toe loop, loop, flip and lutz. so, in fact, when they say the hardest jump is the quadruple jump, technically they're wrong.
