Boris Johnson heckled on visit to flood-hit Yorkshire

- A week after the rain started falling, the army arrived in South Yorkshire to help the victims of the flooding that has engulfed communities near Doncaster.
Around 80 soldiers have been laying sand bags in towns along the River Don.
They were - briefly - visited by the Prime Minister. But he got a frosty welcome from local residents, some of whom angrily accused him of doing nothing to help them.
And they were warned it could be some time before they can return to their homes for good, with more heavy rain forecast. Tom Parmenter reports.

Woman's lucky that she has a house to call her own. Insurance will help out. Besides, its not that badly damaged, we went through the 2011 floods in Brisbane with 7ft water through our homes.
What about all the homeless people? The people living on the street with no home. Nobody talks about them.
Lost everything is a little strong.. the house is still sound and not everything in it is trashed. Also insurance would cover most of the damage....

Why are so many houses built on a floodplain? Why are so many houses not built on 'pylons', thus being above the floodwaters?
Keith Bawden I don’t understand why people buy the houses on flood planes either. There is always a selection of properties of old and new builds but people think new builds are without fault....

500 pounds per household?! How is that enough?! The furniture is ruined, clothes are ruined, the floors, walls, all food that was in the house is mostly ruined, people are broken inside, but the UK government is going to give them 500 pounds per household. Not even per person.

If the environment agency and the different waterboards around the country got together and dug out all the ditches and streams and dredged all the rivers, the flooding would be much less if not stopped altogether. I think that all farmers should be legally responsible for digging and clearing all ditches and streams on and around their property.
