  • From 1993 to 2002, The X Files reigned supreme on network television. One of the first shows (Twin Peaks aside) to mix a deep spiraling mythology into a standard procedural that caught on with genre fans and mainstream audiences alike. I can't stress how important this was before the golden age of dramatic television.
Yet, besides the original nine-season run (before its revival in 2016), creator and showrunner Chris Carter wrote two theatrical movies, The X Files: Fight The Future, which fans and critics alike praised, and The X Files I Want To Believe, which he directed, and what many consider too little too late. Though not nearly as good as the show's peak or the first movie, The X Files: I Want to Believe brings back the charm and chemistry that won over its core audience and delivers a small-scale thriller that should get more praise than it does. So join us and our favorite FBI agent's for The X Files: I Want to Believe on this week's episode of The Black Sheep.

The best way to describe this movie is that it’s a lost filler episode that no one wanted too see. I mean I enjoy it because I’m a X-Files fan but even I have to admit the movie is a massive let down compared to what had came before in the series.

Funny that both this snd 24 were FOX shows, both which really captured the spirit of their eras. 24 went the opposite direction of The X Files, with a hyper-macho Fed in place of Fox Mulder's wide-eyed boyishness, and The US government itself largely depicted as a heroic force that was all that stood between us and The Bad Foreigners. Long term though, it looks like TXF may hold up better than 24 did, given the events since 9/11

Say what you will but I love this movie. The last 2 seasons were good as well I thought. Season 11 gave me the feelings of the earlier seasons with the tension between Mulder, Scully and Skinner not knowing what side Skinner is on. CSM hanging out in Skinner's office...all classic X-Files

This movie has so many problems, but I'll just say this: why on Earth make an X-Files movie, six years after the show ended, and have Mulder and Scully spend most of the movie away from each other? Whatever fans the show still had left after 2002, wanted to see Scully and Mulder working together again. No one wanted Mulder helping Amanda Peet and Xzibit, while Scully was working in a hospital. I understand how the two plots are related to each other, but that doesn't make the movie any better.

Season 11 was better than season 9 and 10. Season 8 is very consistent and is better than 7.
This film seems like a TV episode that got extended when it shouldn't have been. Having said that given the attempts at finishing off the overarching plot in the season 10 & 11, a one off story may have been the better choice.

As a die hard X-Files fan I was honestly hoping for something way different than what we got with "I want to believe". That being said I still do enjoy the film. It probably would've made more money if it didn't come out a week after The Dark Knight. I think it's a worthy X-Files story just not the best placement into the overall universe given the events that precede it in the last episode of season 9. Lastly I gotta ask, Lance.. While Im genuinelly happy to read and hear season 6 getting love from the fans, for me its when it jumped the shark. The initial movie finally finally revealed and reveled in giving the people what they were looking for. Mulder and Scully finally getting to the Real bottom of the Alien truth. A UFO submerged at the end of the world at the South Pole! BUT>>> along comes season 6 and TOTALLY derails any tension, story build up previously attained by the first 5 bulletproof, classic seasons. In the s6 opener, Scully is stubbornly STILL refusing to believe in UFOs- despite the fact that Mulder had just rescued her from one at the bottom arse end of the Earth! I remember watching that in 1999 and shook my head in disbelief. And while some like the more comedic, meta approach ensuing episodes took, I thought most of them were disappointingly stalling and trailing away from the pace gathered from the movie and early seasons. The "monster" episodes lacked the chills and darkness of anything before. It was too "light" and ordinary, it was resembling some of the inferior cloned TV shows that emulated it at the time. S7 could have righted this, but instead there was even more and worse of it, resulting in the nadir, the utter shit that is "Fight Club". The worst episode in the shows history. I think s6 should have amped and wrapped up the pace of the previous movie , spliced with the clever, diverse genius that it did show in places ( Triangle is amazing!).

    • @brion0220
      @brion0220 3 года назад +1

I just finished S6 last month, before Prime removed it from their streaming service (!!!). I think the first half is a bit average. 'The Beginning' was good. As were stand alone eps - Drive and Terms of Endearment. Its wasn't until mid season with Tithonus that the season got good IMO. Then we pretty much got 6 great eps in a row. And I loved Milagro. The Scully centric eps are always a favorite of mine. Field Trip was another highlight.

    • @kylereece1979
      @kylereece1979 3 года назад +2

@@brion0220 Oh totally- season 6 has some highlights. I understand the more commercialised direction the show took to perhaps capitalise on the movies success and in some aspects, it works. Putting more emphesis into Mulder/Scullys "will they wont they" relationship, and toning down the horror in general for more newer, younger viewers.
But my issue was that this comprimised things and the show never really recovered from it. Having Scully Still be a sceptic in s6 was a serious mistake. It underminded her emotive rescue from the UFO and acted like a bad plot device to keep the sceptic/beliver dynamic in place and erase any development the Mythology episodes made, be it character or plot. Chris Carter to me, didnt know how to finalise or further things the way they really shud have, and kept spinning and retconning the Alien episodes to the sort of Sci'Fi that the show initially was against.
Plus Season 6&7's general themes and plots involved straight up paranormal, sci fi where the "monster of the week" was more visible, evident and Scully had less and less science to draw from. It wasnt the same style of drama now, it was lighter, sunnier, more in tune for the "Buffy" generation, and the sci'fi shows that arrived in the XFiles peak.
Scullye sceptism was now an annoying plot device that made no sense to the more opened world of paranormal that they faced. And they never even mentioned the Antartica UFO again till season 8's "Alone"! Which again was cast off in a comedic scene to hide over the fact that the show didnt know what to really do with itself now that the Aliens and Truth was out.
I think if ya put the best of 6&7 together, youve got a solid, kick ass season. Season 8 with Robert Patrick was to me- very very good! Clearly hearing from the fans, they returned to its darker roots.
I quite liked a lot of the recent episodes, but again not the Alien episodes.

From what I remember, this was made during/because of the writers strike in around 2007. Fox needed anything already written to film and release and this was available. Who knows what kind of story we could have gotten had the writers been allowed to create/update a new story focusing more on the mythology, or at the very least, a more "X-files-y" type monster. Plus they released it as a big summer tent-pole movie, when it should have been a Halloween period release. All these issues combined meant we got a very disappointing X-Files movie, though still a surprisingly decent and watchable thriller.

The way I see it Mulder was pardoned by the government as they knew his crimes were made up bullshit. If they wanted him bad enough all they had to do is put the eyes on Sculls and they would have found him. It was a way to get him back in the fold. If you can't find someone, go get Mulder and Scully ('cause you know he's not going alone) sit back and let the pros take care of this shit. Wait right here they'll be right back.

Perhaps the revival didn't tie up loose ends like we the faithful would have liked BUT, the magic between GA and DD cannot be denied. Maybe Mulder and Scully were different but as DD said. It was weird being Mulder again but it wasn't weird being Mulder and Scully again.
I agree about the facial hair. DD has a great beard I can't understand why he didn't let his own grow out, it would have been so much better. It is a shame this movie didn't get better reviews. FTF was an excellent movie BUT it was released while the TV show was still airing and they made it so if the fan didn't see it, it doesn't preclude them from understanding season 6 so CC did a great job at that. The second was simply stand alone and even thought it was made 6 years after the series ended the fans were ready for it. Any way watching GA as Scully again is always worth the price of admission.

Gene died in the TNG years pretty much at the height of that series success. He died a year after "Best of Both Worlds" to put that into context. It died in the never ending shitty spin offs and the reboots that didn't get what Star Trek is about.
George Lucas, controversial yes but let's be honest when RoTS ended the prequels were originally thought to have ended well. He continued on with the Clone Wars which is now seen as good. There was not a never ending whine from 2005 until 2013, it started when Mr. Plinkett showed up. It was Mr. Plinkett who started the whole "GL ruined my childhood" thing began and then many, many other RUclipsrs who attacked him over and over until he sold to Disney. Disney is who killed Star Wars and I wonder if they secretly paid all those RUclipsrs off to begin with back in the early 10s in order to get GL to sell.

When I bought it, I was definitely thinking it would be more grandiose like how Fight the Future was. I was too young to grow up on the TV show, but I do remember watching FtF young and watched it many times. While I was surprised it did not focus on "aliens", it definitely surprised me on how good it was at being a grounded thriller. The acting between Billy, Gillian, & Dave was great in how each presented their motive to "want to believe".
While the undertone of girls getting hacked up for the body revival stuff was sad, it definitely made you invested in each character and the story. Mulder and the FBI setting aside their differences for a bigger cause, Scully pushing back at the Catholic church to try to do her damnedest to save the boy's life, Father Joe trying his best in a scenario where most will shrug him off as a kid buggerin' crackpot. It was more akin to an epilogue of the series, with having both characters settle unresolved issues to live the rest of their lives in peace. They are the twilight of their careers in the film, so it was not so bad to have them put the extra-terrestrial behind them for another day - or more for a younger generation to take the mantle. They are too old to deal with losing their minds on it.
Also, I call bullshit on Mulder's beard at 4:28. Just how many men have you heard of that become recluses keep up daily shaving? No man will spend their time doing it if there is no real practical purpose for it. Little bit of a unrealistic standard there...

I always say FIGHT THE FUTURE was a tribute to the Alien Conspiracy episodes and I WANT TO BELIEVE a tribute to the "Monster Movie" episodes (but yeah, FIGHT THE FUTURE just had a better plot, whereas I WANT TO BELIEVE...........just a mesh of ideas that didn't gel together well)

In my lowly and wretched opinion, despite the unhelpful delay due to legal issues, as you stated they had a golden opportunity to reignite the story lines. I mean, GEEZ, look how the series ended. It ended bloody perfectly! Mulder and Scully were out there together, their son was out there somewhere adopted by some family. The super soldiers were still out there (Damn, EVERYTHING was out there!) Here was a PERFECT opportunity to take that and run with it. And, what do they do...? They come up with some odd one-off not terribly great film, COMPLETELY blowing their chance to set this awesome thing going again. Damn shame...
I haven't watched the reboot 2 seasons yet, but from what I've read they, AGAIN, had a rare chance really to get this going again with the painfully expectant fan base, etc. And, what do they do...? 'My struggle', 'My struggle Pt. 2', 'My struggle pt. 4'...???! WTF!? How about when they came up with F'n cool episode titles like Talitha Cumi for God's sake...? Pure $hit, pure waste. And, it's their own fault. Frankly I'm honestly really surprised that someone as sharp as Chris Carter could have blown both chances so terribly... But, like you say, we have our Golden time during the series on Blu-ray, just as we have the Classic Beauty of Led Zeppelin captured forever on vinyl, just as we have the Classic snapshots of ALL the beautiful creative moments in history, and we are thankful for that.

I completely agree. The only episodes from the revival that are worth a watch are the two directed by Darin Morgan, the rest (especially the 'mythos' episodes) are just bafflingly bad.

  • @FireMadeFleshII

I agree, as a whole, many of the revival seasons episode don't work. However, two standout episodes that gave vibes of the OG series & where Mulder & Scully's chemistry were on point is "Rm9sbG93ZXJz" & "Familiar." The chemistry actually had to work in "Rm9sbG93ZXJz" because there's literally zero dialogue between them in the first 15mins of the episode & they pull you in enough to wonder where all of this is going

I don't think monster of the week was a mistake, in and of itself. I think the mistake was not preemptively pairing it with an alien mythology film when it was announced. Now, obviously, you need studio greenlighting for this to be possible, but for argument's sake, if they had gone about it this way and announced it this way, (monster of the week comes first as the middle film in a trilogy and alien mythology comes next to round the entire franchise out), then I think it would have perfectly suited the storytelling milleu of the series. I was as disappointed as anyone that this was not a mythology "episode," but in choosing to look at this as a standard "monster of the week" scaled up, I was able to appreciate it. But I agree, I think Carter's failure here was in not recognizing fan expectations given the nature and ending of his own series. I really wish he'd had the foresight to approach Fox with the idea to do a trilogy in the way i just here suggested.

The X-Files: Fight for a Future attempted to work for fans of the series as well as bringing in new ones. But if you had not seen the series it didn't work. For X-Files fan it did work and was great. In I Want To Believe, Chris Carter attempted the same and failed even harder, pissing off fans of the TV series and newcomers alike. Billy Connolly is awesome, as always.

Both movies disappointed me. The first so much so that i started writing a book about an alien conspiracy in 1998. I finished the first draft in 2000. I had to extensively revised it the next year after you know what happened in 2001. I didn't publish it because i couldn't convince any publishers that people still wanted to hear about alien-government conspiracies. Everyone was a patriot all of sudden and all of that. People are much more cynical again about the government now so I'll self publish it next year. If somehow it's a hit nobody is going to screw me out of the royalties or movie rights. I can dream right...😁

Yeah I gotta admit I was let down at the time when I saw it. It’s not a horrible movie but it just wasn’t what I expected. I was expecting a “lore” movie much like the first film, one that pushes the show’s overall narrative, answering some questions while posing others. What we got was a feature length “Monster of the Week” episode. If you go into it knowing what exactly it is I think it’s more enjoyable.

Kind of a good review, but was more lackluster than the movie. I've seen it a couple of time in the distant past and had the same feelings most people had. I could not disagree with them, but I watched it again in 2023 and it royally creeped me out. I'm a fan of horror movies and this was one of those dealing with the horror of putting a man's head on a host body. We're back in the 50s horror style. Billy Connelly's acting put me in the right mood. Molder was himself and Skully was being as bitchy as she usually is and that made for good tension in the movie.
Once we get past of the movie being so-so, not quite an X-File movie and see it with blinders off, it comes into its own. It is X-File style move and the monster of the week were the doctors playing Frankenstein.

This movie was so boring and it was hard to focus on.
The problem I have is it was not explained why a mad Russian scientist doctor was in West Virginia in the winter and how the 2 gay dudes met the russian scientist and how they came to conclude they should sew the guy's body up or head to other bodies. It was not explained. And how did Scully randomly just know that Russian expiriments were happening because of something she got off the internet that was being printed to her? Can anyone explain this?
Also it never said what sentence the russians got for their crimes.

The script was a mess and needed a total rewrite. It's a grab-bag of bad ideas thrown together. The scenes were flopping all over, in the field, in the hospital, back at home, in the city, etc. with seemingly no accounting for time. People just were where they needed to be when the script needed them to be there. There's no liner flow, it's all disjointed. (Spoilers I guess, but don't waste your time with this movie) The FBI inexplicably don't know where Fox is at the beginning of the movie even though he's living with Skully. Did they skip the first place anyone else would look? One agent they're working with dies and the reaction by the movie is: "Oh, no... so, anyway". Another agent's head is found in a box (a la Se7ven) and the FBI figures their investigation is done. Not even curious about the dozens of other victim's body parts they found nor have any intention of bringing the culprit to justice even though they have a suspect. Later Skully is like "Agent Whatsherface is still alive!" No, she's very clearly dead. We saw her head in a box. Just because someone else's head is attached to her body doesn't mean she's alive. And how the hell does she come across an article about a guy who experimented on dogs in Russia when she was researching stem cells (on google) and conclude that's their guy? It's a stretch that would even make Mulder blush, so of course it's right. Xzibit is only there to poo-poo everything until he's replaced by Skinner in the last five minutes of the movie. BTW, the last five minutes is the most hand-wavy ending with the wrap-up dealing with nothing that the audience is going to be wondering about. I don't care what the pedophile priest meant when he said "Don't give up". Nobody does.

CC please don't blame the outcome of season 11 on your STAR! Scripts should have be written by the time filming began. Momma Bear wanted to get home to her cub.

Yeah I want to believe was a good way to end it all. But the fans wanted a third movie but given how I want to believe was a flop it made a third movie impossible. So the fans pressured Carter to make more seasons. And he made the mythology more confusing and convoluted. And now Anderson has had enough of x files. I enjoyed the monster of the week episodes of the revival but the story arc not so much. And Mulder and Scully are broken up again smh.
