That's what nobody would teach us way back before the internet. Those little things that gave it that professional sound. I know why they wouldn't teach us that stuff because they wanted us to keep coming back. I learned more in 5 years on RUclips than I did the previous 40. Thanks Tom.
My first and only guitar teacher used to ask me to pick a song to learn each week. I don’t think we ever learned the song I requested. I was 12 and into Nirvana who’d just come out so I asked to learn Teen Spirit, of course. He taught me Glenn Frey’s ‘The heat is on’.
I think it’s also the teachers to which we had access. Every town doesn’t have an Uncle Larry or an RJ Ronquillo. But in death, a member of Project Mayhem HAS a name. His name is Robert Paulson.
You are so authentic. That's why us hardcore guitar enthusiasts are here. You got knobs from Australia for an Ibanez bolt on Les Paul that's why we love you. You are the real deal
I've had "In Stereo" on constant rotation, "The Black Cloud" still gets me every time I hear it. The other day, I'm driving home, it's late afternoon, and storms are brewing. Up ahead, I see a big black cloud, about that time "The Black Cloud" starts playing. I'm feeling it but holding together OK. Then I crest the hill, and laid against that big black cloud is the most beautiful double rainbow I've ever seen. I had to pull over, it was a powerful moment. You guys made a great album. Thanks!
Great as always Tom! A little bit of Hurts So Good vibe goin' on there. Totally loving In Stereo, so good! Can't wait to visit Nashville in August! Cheers from Down Under mate! 😎👍🎸
Very cool. I am 62 and learned that long ago with stuff like Aerosmith and Ted Nugent, and so many bands. Very cool. ❤ Regards from South Central Indiana. USA Tim
Ha--I can say I knew SOME of those. Or I did them a bit differently. But the fake open G! Cool. Never tried that before. Awesome stuff. You are passing on info that is otherwise gradually being lost (and I'm an old dog too). Great stuff. Subscribed!
Nice job brother!❤ I also teach the Chuck Berry rhythm and slash D/A,A/E,C/G chords. And I agree 100%, it's not taught and you don't see it much online, thank you for pointing it out! GOD Bless! Rob Ransom
Hey Tom! Love the bends you do in this tune and at the gig with Guthrie the other night. Could you do a video showing us your thought process for those ringing bends? One I use occasionally is the minor 3rd bend up to the major 3rd while the root rings out, but that's it. Also, tagging off another comment, I really like what you and Guthrie did on the Clyde cover, would you show us some of what you were doing in that? Thanks Uncle Larry!
Tom, great Video. You bring so much inspiration to us. Watching you play the F-Chord (not going Barre) in the Rick Beato Video... Man, this really changes my playing forever. Thank you so much.
I don't know why I just subscribed, my heart wants to play but after 60 years of rocking my arthritis in my hands, won't even allow me to pick up a cup of coffee. Still have the yearning though.
I missed this video a few months ago, but I'm glad to see it now. I just fell in love with a 1977 Ibanez LP and I'm glad to see you also have an appreciation for these fine guitars
Larry, my second electric guitar was a bolt-on neck 'ron' burgundy Memphis Les Paul 'rendering'. I tried to convince the local guitar tech to add a Gibson bridge and tailpiece back in '82, and he advised me just get a better guitar so I sold it and decided to get an Ibanez St-50 set neck two humbucker Sunburst model. I changed my mind and bought a Gibson Firebrand 'The Paul' Deluxe in dazzling walnut over Mahogany finish. It kind of sounded like a walnut and I got rid of it in a couple years. What should have done is just bought a Japanese Squier Strat or tele from that era instead but hey, who knew? At least you still have your 79 Deluxe which is super cool and makes me happy every time you talk about it or show it on the channel we're only a couple years apart in age, and we came up during the same era of music. Don't ever think you don't reach people Tom, I guess maybe that's a pretty heavy thing to consider✌️😎
I'm still very old school. Be humble, listen, watch, learn anything and everything anyone is willing to show you, especially the #1 session man in Nashville!! That sort of reminded me of Keef riffs, where he takes the low E string off of Micawber, and plays a bunch of their songs. Thanks Uncle L, 8) --gary
Great info, thanks. I’ve played for decades but my ability to stretch my left pinkie finger with even the slightest amount of accuracy still eludes me. So thanks the pointer about sliding up to do those hammer ons. Definitely need to practice that.
First time visiting via MusicRadar, immediately noticed what looks like beehive super drawers? Beekeepers notice this kind of stuff. Just finished stacking some on for the big June nectar.
Tom: Thank you, What a Great lesson, we appreciate it, so full of nuances and techniques, and the story of your session work today and this week. Wishing you and your boys the greatest Memorial day weekend. You’re a great dad, the most important job I believe. You are all in on everything and we’re so fortunate to be able to spend time with you and your family on your channel. We have all the cds and they are our favorites to listen to. Thanks again,
Between having played a fair amount of Bad Company and Stones back in the day, I got pretty comfortable with some of those rhythmic devices. It’s great that you point them out, especially to some younger players. But I must admit you did a couple that I never used before that I’ll be trying out. Thanks Buk.
Got my CD the other day. Been playing it in the car since i got it. Lovely stuff, lads. Thank you. My wife came into the room while I was watching this, and said you have a "cool face" and "a good movie voice". Might be a second line of work for you, Tom. Aloha.
Thanks for posting this. By the way, when you want to make a point by looking directly into the camera, you should look into the camera rather than at the display.
Uncle Larry!!! That geet is SWEET Happy to catch one of your videos damn near live Thanks for a great channel man. Interesting, fun and i pick up a LOT of guitar things too 💪💪🤣 Cheers buddy
I love it! Seriously, this could EASILY be a full course, how to B O O G I E all over with every shape! BTW, I call that a boogie, but it is definitely Rock & Roll!
Growing up having Keef as a huge influence, you nailed a bunch of my playing style right there! Makes rhythm playing a lot more interesting IMO. That's not ALL I do, of course, but I can attribute my fairly strong sense of rhythm with some melody to him. Townshend was great at that as well.
I bought a brand new black walnut top 1973 Lawsuit Ibanez Les Paul "Custom" in 1973 from the music shop where I worked for $300 and got something like $100 back from the owner under the table from the shop; he had some agreement where he wouldn't sell the guitars for less than $300. They do indeed have intonation problems and the wiring to the bridge pick up is cursed, but if you turn it up real loud through a distorted amp it did the job. I hardly ever play mine, it's in mint condition, but the cheap pick ups, intonation and tuning issues drive me crazy.
How can you sit down and play like that? You gotta get up and kick around when you're playing that shit, cause, that's the shit. As for the fourth against the root, Bill Wyman's bass on 'Satisfaction.'
Thanks always for these gold nuggets Larry. This is very much a la Brian May, as well If Im not mistaken. Cowboy Chord system at its finest Funny enough I was playing Maiden as when I was a 13yo and I found a couple licks like this. 😂😂 Truly valuable knowledge
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!! I got a notice my Baked Alaska CD was shipped!!! Just Yay!!! And I have to mess with you man…. You could make any Guitar sound great and you have caused me to appreciate and approach my guitars differently than ever before!! Two huge things you cause for me…. The Savvy Bridge on my 58JR and the XTS Mod GE7 has been the highlight of my new guitar journey….. now if I could send you a set of Dean Markley Blue Steels…… hahaha
When I wanna get down on some Stones-style rock n roll I just tune to open G and go nuts. I’ve been working on some stuff that has a funky Black Crows meets the Stones vibe😂 (No, I am your Father…). And it’s coming along nicely. But this is a hella cool lesson for doing it in standard so you don’t need more guitars live.
Very cool lesson. I always knew "something" about these chords (Rock and Roll Damnation, Crazy Train, Brown Sugar, etc.) but never looked at it like this. I think these are the sorts of chords that make things instantly cool.
Great to see you playing an old Ibanez, I have the set neck version of that guitar, a 1978, solid maple top, took me forever to find one, those super 70’s pickups are awesome.
holy shit Tom, I finally went and grabbed my guitar to fiddle on those variations of the root/4th stones vib thingy. Usually I just like to hear you rant but this time I actually learned something guitar playing wise.
I do that sus stuff all the time, and that lydian flavor (A) from the key of E, I jam a lot with the major flavor, mixed with a mixo flavor a lot, I love mixolydian, I like all the modes.
Have you ever worked with Brendan O’Brien? I bet you would hit it off. His work has influenced me a lot, but I’ve never seen him talk or be interviewed. Rick Beats has a recent sit down that you might want to watch. But most importantly, I hope you and Brendan O’Brien meet someday over a cold one. Cheers, and thanks for doing this channel.

Australia freakin rocks, thats why! 🇦🇺🤘
Australia has the knobs
I love it when you get back to basics Tom. It's a bone for us bedroom-only players. Something we can actually shoot for. Thanks for this one.
Totally. I’ve gotten so much mileage out of this. He hasn’t thought as a song here, he’s taught us a genre!
to quote Myles Francis Goodwyn "I Like to Rock"
One helluva' riff and songwriter Myles was! And one trio of talented rock guitarists in April Wine. 🤜🤛

watched a vid of you and Guthrie playing "Clyde" (JJ CALE) Cover ! so damn good! ,Your solo was so tasty and on point ! keep up the good work!
Cleveland Rocks! Midwest strong. The great Boogie Woogie Blues. Attitude is everything. Nice to see how to do it right. Thx UL
It’s only rock and roll, but I like it
Did Tom just reinvent rock n roll for thousands of Homeskoolers?
I ordered my CD 20 min after they became available... got it yesterday, IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT
hell yeah man right on
Great as always Tom! A little bit of Hurts So Good vibe goin' on there. Totally loving In Stereo, so good! Can't wait to visit Nashville in August! Cheers from Down Under mate! 😎👍🎸

Love the “creepy” shape… in my head, I think of it a “double sus,” or as a modified version of a flat 7 chord. Whatever it is, it sounds awesome.

Hey just started watching your channel, love your content. Love that Ibanez is it for sale?
Good stuff. Keys players do all these triad embellishments, too. Good to listen to other instruments, too(!).
The opener has strains of "Happy" by the Stones.
I was hearing that, too.
Sounds to me like If Keith Richards wrote Takin' Care of Business
Received my CD in the mail yesterday so yes, they are coming.
Good to hear!
Yessir! That is definitely How To Rock! Thanks Unc!
I'm definitely hearing some Keef in this lesson, I thought it was "Happy" at first
Home Skool extra credit - Larry made me look up Meadery so now I know what that is. Thanks Trooper!

That sounds a lot like Davey Johnstones rock playing with Elton John
Coming in hot with that #11 Lydian sound then straight to the chonk
My very first guitar was a black Ibanez Les Paul just like that!
I had that same Ibanez Les Paul..it was my first really good electric....traded it to a friend for strat but it was a great guitar.
Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for a great channel man. Interesting, fun and i pick up a LOT of guitar things too 💪💪🤣
Cheers buddy
My small ass hands could never do that chuck berry stretch so THANKS for showing this 💯🙏👍🏽
Love me some stones and that sounds just like them 🔥
Cool Ibanez! I saw K's Choice at Lilith Fair in the late 90s
I keep thinkin of "hurts So Good' by Mellancamp when I hear those Stones-y embellishments. Great stuff
Think I heard 50 years of rock history just now.

I love suspicious chords
haha....those are the most melodic pickups i have ever heard

When are we gonna see the G&T tour???
Man that is super cool. This reminds me of ACDC too... they always have cool sounding chords with these kind of hammer-ons. Thanks Tom!
next lesson, we see what's happening on the bottom three strings when playing.
These free channels are so lame
I learned the 3rd fret G to C thing from Bob Dylan's folk album's. Later on learned to use it up the neck. Thanks Session Man!
Play guitar like that
Got the CD yesterday and it’s amazing. Thank you for continuing to make great music!

Down Down (1974) by Status Quo. Love, love, love that song. Francis Rossi plays it in open G with a capo on the 4th. Rockin' nirvana.

Thanks for playing a cheapo guitar because cheapo is all I've got. And yeah, you're right = I didn't know that.
