I wouldn't have bothered getting it if it didn't have the soundtrack. It's so nice to finally have an official version of the game with the soundtrack (aside from the original release of course).
Woke up, saw this came out, bought it on PS5 and Switch immediately. We need more of these remasters, classic shooters should never die.

I wasn't even planning on buying the Switch version, but I got the Steam version for free because I already owned old-school Quake. So now I have 2 copies. Oops! Gotta support the Devs!
Glad to see some of these classic FPS's getting released and a bit of a makeover. Would love to see Hexen, Heretic, Blood, Return to Castle Wolfenstein get released next.

This is mind-blowing how PERFECT of a port this is. I'm stunned.
Hopefully one day the handheld curse ends, and people don't doubt a system just because it is capable of being a handheld.. lol
It's not perfect. The stick aiming is awful. It's got a ton of input lag. I've played quake on a controller for years and the stick aiming in this port is really bad.

It's a game of nostalgia. In 2021 it looks like shit, shit enemies, shit graphics, boring repetitive gameplay, garbage environments. There are better shooters on switch. This is a cash grab.

This was one of those games I've always wanted to play. Downloaded, played it, loved it. Now they need to release Quake 2

I remember grinding hours away at this game as a teen first on PC, and then later on Saturn. The last boss was ridiculous.
might just be me, but the low resolution mode is pure divinity to me. theres something about low poly pixelated textures in the large blocky ("jaggies as I hear the kids call it today) that just puts me in a state of nostalgic nervana.

I can't get enough of shooters with gyro support. Personally, I like to use it in tandem with the stick for a perfect combo of precision.

I think this is the fastest I've ever gone from seeing a game was out to hitting the Buy button. And that was before I saw this review. It's excellent

Wonder if it's on PS5 ? I just bought it twice today, on Series X and Switch. I know Microsoft and Nintendo have a good business relationship, great to see it on Switch but i wonder if it's on PS5 ?
Just done a quick Google seach, it is on PlayStation.
While it is true Microsoft has other games on the Switch, I feel like future new releases from Bethesda might be questionable. But things like Quake Remastered aren't really system sellers like a new Doom, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc, so it makes sense to port Quake to other systems and sell a lot more copies.
@@KrustyBert Very true. Probably something like a new Quake, Quake V or more likely a reboot of Quake would be exclusive to PC and Xbox.

I loved quake. I still remember being blown away when I first installed a voodoo 3dfx card and played this game. Nostalgia overload.

One of my favorite games and this was a total and complete surprise! Especially since they’ve barely done anything with the original since it’s release.

Grabbed this immediately! I remember it being good and fun when I was a kid, but the level design and speed of it was something I'd completely forgotten! Although managed to remember enough to snag all the secrets in the first level 👍🏻

Yeh been on this most of the night. Its absolutely the best version ever and including the n64 version is amazing. That motion control is just ...wow. very tired and have to work in 3 hours....been a long time I been kept up all night. I'm blown away. We got an incredible game here. 10/10

Just a heads up. Physical copies are going to be available from Limited Run starting August 27th for Switch and PS4.
Probably gonna get the Switch version digitally for convenience then the PS4 physically and that apparently will have a PS5 upgrade as well
Quake and Quake 2 are the top tier FPS games
I had to have completely missed this announced re-release, or it just wasn't given a solid announcement! Thanks for bringing it to my attention, because while others improved on the original formula, there's NO beating my feelings of base excitement for "Quake"! This was a HUGE game in my life when it was originally released, and having it on the go on a Switch, with that performance leap? SOLD.

Why has Nightdive Studios not given us more PC ports to consoles yet?
I'd like to see Deus Ex, System Shock, and the Thief games be ported to modern consoles.
They are a small team, currently working on a full system shock remake, porting exhumed/powerslave. Idk what projects they else have running. But their work on porting turok 1+2 and shadowman is stunning.

While I'm making wishes on a genie, I think I'll also wish for a console port of Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.

Wow, after doom 64 came out I was wondering why they didnt remaster quake 1 yet. This is just what I was looking for. I have been collecting old school shooters on my switch, the Dooms, Duke ect.

If Quake can still get a Nintendo Switch port even after Microsoft acquired ZeniMax, then I hope that we can still get Switch ports of other legacy titles in the ZeniMax library. The game at the top of my list is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It's my favorite game of all time, and most of my other favorites--including this one--are either already on the Switch or getting Switch ports in the coming months.
Young people will never know what an amazing game this was back in 1996. It's still ridiculously fun.

Gotta give a shout out to night dive studios, when I saw their logo I knew the port would be solid.
I agree that motion blur was termendously bad back in the PS2 days and even PS3/360 days. However, these days, with high quality per-object motionblur the appearance is very much like professional camcorder equipment with proper shutter speed. old video- and computer game graphics are inherently flawed as they only capture a still image during a certain point in time. In contrast a camcorder captures the motion of an image over the passing of time, resulting in a more realistic portrait of motion. So basically, if motion blur is tuned correctly these days it offers smoother and a more natural appearance similar to how our eyes perceive the world. (wave your hand in front of you, it will receive motion blur) So basically, motion blur these days is a good thing, it rids game graphics of the inherit flaw of "still frame"-representation during the passing of time.
Still loving that the nail gun takes ...what else?... Nine Inch Nails! (with the NIИ logo on the box)
My favourite setting is: all visual enhancements on EXCEPT texture smoothing.
I remember playing this on PC over 20 years ago! It was so dark and brooding that I stopped after a few weeks because it was freaking me out 😅. Wait , it has chat , crossplay ??Dang ! Hats off to everyone involved .
This scratches the nostalgia itch big time for me. My old man, his buddy and I would play this together when I was young.
I know it's an impossible long shot but it would be cool if the Ravages of Apocalypse game was also made available like this.

Back in the day in yr7 at school, one of our IT teachers had Quake hidden under a separate user... but ofc us students figured it out, so inbetween him teaching us, my form group would switch to play deathmatches against each other.
So much nostalgia, so will definitely be picking up and getting my school friends over to reminisce of our antics 18yrs ago (damn I'm old!)

This is perfect type of game for the switch. I was 14 when this came out. I have this on pc switch and Xbox lol. Will buy on Ps5 soon. The nostalgia on this game is amazing. I loved gaming in the 90s

Now we need Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena with the option to import your own custom character models. I used to make hundreds of skins and models for clans and such in Quake 2 and tastyspleen servers still running after how many years now? Great review of Quake 1 :D
4:03 Quake 64 is NOT a fan-made mod. Quake 64 is the Nintendo 64 version of Quake that was developed by Midway. Quake 64 has various features that were not present in the original PC Quake, such as colored lighting and animated water textures. Quake 64 also has a different soundtrack (composed by Aubrey Hodges, who also did the PS1 Doom and Doom 64 OST), some changes in enemy placement, changes to map layout, and extra secrets to compensate for the missing levels that were not brought to the N64 port due to hardware limitations.
How did you know all this?

Unfortunately the fuzz filter on Quake 64 is terrible. Really takes away from the experience.
Looks fantastic. That means the switch now has Doom, Duke, Quake, Serious Sam + others. I'm hoping we'll also get a port of Blood: Fresh Supply and Shadow Warrior. That'd make the Switch even more appealing to us fans of classic FPS games.

It's gonna be great being able to play mods without messing about in DOS for half an hour first! There was one which had a shotgun with a revolving barrel. Brilliant 👏
Anyone else play quake back on the N64 because they didn't have a pc? And quake 2 on the PS1? Glory days! Quake is a fantastic game and just like doom the gameplay is timeless, truly gameplay over graphics
Nice. I actually skipped Quake on PC and jumped into Unreal Tournament in place of Quake III when the great tournament games came out, so I will definitely be adding this one to my library. Chance to go back and see what I missed.

Amazing to see this running so well on the Switch, a free update on Steam for those who already own Quake (most people I think), I went for the PS4 version today and will be trying to get my hands on the Limited Run physical for the Switch now I know it runs well, big Quake fan. Thanks for covering this guys.
My only negatives are that I wish there was a way to bind the face buttons & d-pad to the weapons in multiplayer as the wheel or cycling through weapons is useless in multiplayer, I also wish there was a way to have console/controller only crossplay as Quake is one of those games where a controller is about as useful as a chocolate teapot vs keyboard and mouse!

I love when retro FPS are released on the switch. These versions are normally my go-to versions to play. I tried to play Quake on my computer a while back and it was... Not very good. But now thanks to this switch version, I can totally enjoy this game for the first time.

Well, I'm quaking in me boots when I find out about the remaster, and I'm shambling around the knight playing it.
Hold up. A few things I noticed: you're going to look at FPS, performance... I'm pretty sure you can include framerate in a performance section. Another thing is, you mention that there's an option to turn off the resolution upscaling. Is it upscaling? I'm pretty sure it's rendering it at a higher resolution, not just scaling the image.
Got it with my xbox game pass ultimate sub. Very happy with it, It is a great game!

And I had a floppy that made is Glide 3Dfx or D3D & OPGL.
It looked and ran outstandingly ....like your 2021 version.

This is an order of magnitude better than both those games combined. Much simpler than Turok much much better shooting than both too

Years later with a switch I was trying to remember what I played all those years ago and ended up downloading Doom, but soon realised it wasn't the same game, and dad that Quake wasn't on Switch

.. And yes! Gyroscopic action has got to be hands down the one reason that sold me on buying this.
I completely empathise with you. Using the gyro is sooo intuitive and makes for more better gameplay especially for shooters I don't care what anyone else says. I think this could be an age thing? Not trying say you're old! I'm nearly mid forties, arggh but find gyro function is more sensory to use. I spent my gaming youth on learning moves from the original Super Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat and 48 move combos from Killer Instinct on the SNES. My brain, hands and fingers coordination struggle to keep up these days. Gyro definitely is the way forward!

I scored this game on a black friday sale, for an awesome 6 bucks, I used 2 bucks Nintendo gold credit, so all up, I scored this very awesome game for $4, how can you go wrong with that! Oh the countless nights I played this with mates back in the day, can't believe what an absolute bargain I got this for 🤘
