    Why razer? You killed your own product with that price! If I want to hook up a 980 to my laptop, I don't want to pay for an additional 980 to do it! That price is outrageous! I also expected this to be around 200 euros.

    • @acgandhi
      @acgandhi 8 лет назад +2

      +Wistbacka At this price point, it's more cost effective to have a laptop AND a separate Mini-ITX system.

      +Wistbacka Yeah I was hoping for around a $250 price, but like he said there were delays and Razer is the first to do this through Thunderbolt so a lot of this price is probably from R&D. I would hope the second generation, years off unfortunately, would be much more reasonable.

    For now getting a new blade with a 970m and a 6th gen i7 seems like a good idea to me since it grants the user enough gpu power to wait 2-3 years before getting the core and at that time it won't cost half grand anymore.

    • @ballstothewallsoc

      ***** Plus with the skylake CPU the consumer probably will gain battery life and better thermals than last year (not to mention the greater VRAM count on the new blade which could help in higher res). Overall one of the nicest mobile computers out there (even though they did not fix that naming scheme : c'mon Min Tan, the 3rd "new Razer Blade 14")

    • @Randomguy86204
      @Randomguy86204 8 лет назад +1

      +RoughRunner External GPUs have been out for *YEARS*. Alienware has their own and yes its proprietary but it costs 1/3 of what Razer is asking for. If Alienware just redesign it with a USB-C, which I assume they are going to do, then what?
      Quit being a fanboy, the price is absurd. I can imagine here in Australia it will land for about $900AUD just for the core.

    • @connormeakins5322
      @connormeakins5322 8 лет назад

      +Mike S yeah that sucks, you could buy a decent pc for that price

    • @RoughRunnerAce98
      @RoughRunnerAce98 8 лет назад

      Mike S They have been out for years but none of them are anywhere near as good. do you not know how new technology works? it comes out expensive then gets cheaper over time... how can you assume alienware can just "redesign" their system to be cheaper? There is a reason they had to build a whole proprietary system in the first place. it is literally a whole different type of technology. This solution is not exclusive to razer and while its expensive right now it will get better over time. yes it isn't worth it at this very moment but you seem to think just because razer made it, that is the reason it is expensive which is pretty ignorant. there are only 3 devices which it works on so judging it indefinitely at this point is really dumb. any company could have released the first of this technology and it would still be awesome but expensive. thats how tech works...

      I doubt you could fit a quad core Skylake CPU with hyper threading, 16GB RAM, PCIe SSD, PSU and a case in a $400-$500 budget. I'd say Mobo, CPU and RAM would cost about $400 alone.

    • @thomaszhang4765
      @thomaszhang4765 8 лет назад

      +Dakota Davis that's ridiculous you don't even need those things for gaming. A quad core cpu is standard without having hyperthreading, 8 gigs of ram is plenty by today's standards, motherboards and cases aren't that expensive. And if you really think about that without a gpu such system could be build.

    • @tijolex

      +TheEpicTurban Austin Evans has some pretty nice pc builds. This is the cheapest ruclips.net/video/aj2o5xaJJoI/видео.html
      But make sure to watch all of his builds, you'll find one that suits you for sure.

    • @imbleu1067
      @imbleu1067 8 лет назад

      +Dakota Davis Not everything listed is needed for gaming, and if you go MiniITX System instead of the Razer Core, the extra $1000 (or more depending on version) for the Blade Stealth gives you $1500 before GPU, fairly reasonable.

    • @HeWhoGameZ
      @HeWhoGameZ 8 лет назад

      Thomas Zhang I agree with the quad core part. 8GB of RAM purely for nothing else but gaming, yes it'll be just fine. But most people don't use their PC just for gaming. They have background processes, web browsers and other programs. Before my games even start I'm already at about 7GB used.

    Hey Dave thanks for the stellar video!
    As usual the production quality on your vids are top of the line. But the content this time was especially awesome. I was in the market for decent laptop but I also needed something to game on. Those two requirements usually meant a bulky, machine that I would have to lug around everywhere. Then I came across the razer core and your video. Your analysis and simplification of how the core works and was incredibly useful and eventually pushed me to buy the core and stealth. Thanks Dave!

    I cancelled my Blade and Core pre-orders and went for Alienware 15 R2 with Skylake 6820hk i7. I need all the CPU I can get for Pascal GPUs, and Razer seemed shy about releasing benchmarks for the Core, while I knew exactly what I was getting with the Alienware option. Plus, it cost me $1K less, and Alienware's Support is legendary.

      @KnightMD 8 лет назад

      +Christopher Ungeheier I absolutely love my Alienware 15 R2.... The keyboard is ok but is a clear step down from the m17x r4, but way better than any chiclet keyboard including that of the Razers. I have the Amplifier but cancelled my 980ti and will get the 1080 when it comes out next week.

      KnightMD thanks! I'm on the fence currently.

    • @KnightMD
      @KnightMD 8 лет назад

      +Christopher Ungeheier If you're in the US, and have the cash to spare, well, wait for the Core reviews and benchmarks. The laptop and Core look a lot slicker, and the Core is plug and play. I will probably upgrade to next year's version when the Blade has significantly better internals (unlike my 15r2's 980M, the 970M cannot drive VR on its own; and the Core i7 6700 is 20% slower than the 6820hk) and smaller bezels.

    • @nithia
      @nithia 8 лет назад

      I got stuck with my Blade Stealth as I ordered mine the day preorders opened for it and got it before the Core price ever came out; also before the 2016 Blade came out (or I would have just gotten one of those). Now I am trying to decide if I want to just go ahead and get the core any way like I planned on doing (probably will) or just not bother and have a very nice but a bit pricy ultra book, and then just build a new desktop but have to transfer school and work data between the two when I need more graphical power. I went with the UHD 256gb option so it cost me $1500 for the laptop alone.

    Part of the info is incorrect. Thunderbolt 3 may be capable to push 40 Gb/s while connected to a rack of SSDs, but on PCIE protocol, Thunderbolt 3 is capable to push PCIE 3.0 X4 transfer speeds (31.52 Gb/s counting interface overhead), which turns out to be exactly the same as Alienware's solution. Anyway, a TITAN X GPU would only be bottlenecked by a mere 5% of it's total output (or maybe 10% on the worst scenarios), wich is great in my opinion.

    XConnect is essentially GPU hotplug/unplug. nVidia added similar functionality to their driver from what I saw. Thunderbolt 3 eGPU seems bit vendor locked as it's up to laptop maker to provide BIOS compatibility. I've asked local Dell about latest Dell Precision and they say it's not supported and not planned (where as other source tweeted XPS was certified for this)...
    ExpressCard eGPU didn't had to rely on vendor ;)

    I have a MacBook Pro 2015 with thunderbolt 2, is it possible to use apple thunderbolt 3-thunderbolt 2 adapter to connect ? Razer core ➡️ apple TB3 to TB2 adapter ➡️MacBook Pro 2015
    If this set up works well on bootcamp win10 I'll buy it.

    Buy the RAZER CORE = 500$
    Buying GTX 1080 = 900$
    Total cost = 1400$
    A laptop with GTX 1060=1300$
    (this graphics card is VR ready and it allows you to play best games above 60 fps)
    So, this thing (Razer Core) is very expensive, I think.

    1.) Will the alienware amplifier outperform this?
    2.) Can this be used with all type C usb port

    • @Dave2D

      +Sasha Fierce 1) similar in performance but it depends on your setup. 2) needs thunderbolt 3. not just usb-C

    So will I be better off using wifi rather than plugging into ethernet on the core?
    What about running games off external drives?
    I'd like to see some actual numbers on how framerates are affected.

    Great video, didn't know using the built in monitor would be such a resource hog and I have a 4K screen..
    Really liked how you portrayed resource management but now I'll have to find out what peripherals use up noticable bandwith and stick to what's essential. A wireless mouse and powered external DAC/Headphone amp should use up virtually nothing or atleast very little. Charging shouldn't affect bandwith, right?
    It'll definitely become a bottleneck as newer GPU's get released though and even if that wasn't a problem I'd still not pay 500. Just hope we won't have to wait long for competitors to bring that down.

  • @jijingebob
    @jijingebob 8 лет назад

    2:32 you can use all that without using the core by just using the ports on the Laptop itself

  • @Hafiere
    @Hafiere 8 лет назад

    I hope the core will be like PC cases, you only really need to buy it once.Since the standards are implementable by other manufacturers, I don't think the core will be alone for long. Competition will surely make cheaper options available.

  • @Wolgorboy
    @Wolgorboy 8 лет назад

    I think you're wrong with the bandwidth. Thunderbolt 3 supports 40gbs full duplex, so 80 gbs full.

    • @Dave2D
      @Dave2D  8 лет назад +1

      +Wolgor typed this earlier for someone else but i'll repaste here:
      No device using the PCIe bus uses a single lane, they use multiple lanes. So if you have something that uses near full bandwidth you get 'congestion' because of too few lanes. The motherboard automatically reserves a certain number of lanes for every device you plug in. So even if a USB device uses very little bandwidth, it uses up a lane.
      This is why razer's job was tough as hell. To have intelligent "turning off"' of automatic lane assignment. So back to your quesiton. Duplex @ 40Gb/s both ways can't work here because of the sheer number of lanes being consumed by a PCI-E (not bandwidth limitations). Hope that help clarify! (Razer's engineers can explain it in much more detail than I can haha)

    The thing I need to know is when the hell I can buy my core. I bought my Razer Blade Stealth the day you could order and got a code for a $100 discount for the core and it expires in a couple of weeks. I was at work the one day you could preorder the Core and by the time I got home it was just listed as notify me.At least I still have my gaming desktop to use for now but it is a few years old and needs a few upgrades and I kind of wanted to go the Stealth/Core as I wanted a good ultra book for school and writing and then be able to just use the same system when gaming rather than having to have two copies (or crack one) of some of my more expensive software.
