    What other eGPU testing do you want to see? I want to test different laptop CPUs, different graphics cards, other applications outside of gaming, and compare with a desktop PC in future.

      In future I'd definitely like to see how much the CPUs hold these setups back. I have my suspicions they were pegged at close to max -- maybe you could use a HWinfo64 overlay with the CPU usage

    A lot of people spend $2000+ on high end gaming laptops these days. I see this technology as more of an upgrade path for those who can't justify spending another 2k+ when it's graphics become dated. It allows you to keeps your current machine for much longer. Whether you hook it up to a monitor or not; you are still seeing improvement.

      Old comment but this is exactly why I got a Core X. Laptops last a long time except for the GPUs becoming quite quickly outdated, TB3 egpu is a compromise but throwing a 30 or 40 series card into the eGPU enclosure pretty much negates this.

      It's exactly what I'm doing too.
      I've had gaming laptops for years now. I tend to be buying the XX60/70 at the £1000-£1200 mark.
      This time I'm buying a £600 laptop, £300 GPU and £300 dock. So for the first one, it's about the same cost. However, if in two years I need more CPU performance, I can just upgrade the £600 laptop. If in 4 years, the GPU needs upgrading I can just buy a more powerful GPU.
      The eGPU setup will give me enough gaming performance, but with the ability to trade out one of the components. This also makes it cheaper to repair. If your gaming laptop's GPU goes bust, then the whole system baasically needs replacing, rather than jsut the GPU.

I've searched a lot of gaming laptops and alienware is the only one that I've seen hit clock speed without any throttling. Razer maybe aswell but their customer service scares me. Aero having the ports on the side is a killer for me, must be from the back. I have had thick clevo gaming laptop I don't mind it being that thick or heavy but since I'm looking for a new laptop I'm gonna try get the lighter models.

      Thermals are similar to m15 R1, has an inverted mobo & soldered RAM, so not a good choice IMO. New Aero 15 would be a better choice or just get an older m15. Both have one of the worst thermals, Jarrod's old video is still true, only diff I observed with my RTX m15 is that it more aggressively power throttles while gaming but temps will still be 90C+ with 2.6GHz or so clock speeds. You can definitely improve it a lot with UV, boost freq limit & cooling pad but many other laptops hit higher freq for same temps after doing all those. Even new Omen 15t seems better than the older one, Ownordisown did a review.

    I think for this to be practical to the average gamer a few things need to happen..
    1.) The enclosure has to be less $$
    2.) Thunderbolt 3 being as common as USB
    3.) Change in technology to reduce performance loss/bottlenecking
    4.) More portable enclosures
    As it is now, it's nice for a small percentage of gamers but just seems really impractical for most.
    Plus gaming laptops can be pretty light/powerful and desktops can be built in extremely small form factors in 2019.
    Thanks for the video Jarrod as always!

    • @user-ds8rj2vc4v
      @user-ds8rj2vc4v 7 месяцев назад +1

      1 - The enclosure costs money, but it shaves it off the cost of the computer.
      2 - Thunderbolt 4 and USB4 are commonplace now.
      3 - TB3 and TB4 are basically the same. What we need is TB5, which is coming out this year, so expect it to be in laptops next year / next couple of years.
      4 - Enclosure is fine. It's for docking a GPU. So must be of a certain size.

I have to replace by Thinkpad docking station. When you look at the price of a TB3 docking station, the prices start around $270. The only use case I can envision for this setup is for when you are vehemently refusing to have a setup consisting of an ultrabook and desktop gaming system. The cost of the Razer laptop (of which are insanely overpriced here in Oz) and the cost of the eGPU enclosure and then a hefty GPU just screams pointlessness. For that money you could build a bloody good desktop gaming rig and buy a decent ultrabook. And with modern cloud-based "handover" software integration, you can pretty much switch from one device to the other and continue where you left off on that document or project you were working on. I just simply cannot see a business case for having developed this product. Hmm, maybe that's why the Razer laptops are so expensive?

      @@JarrodsTech I be curious to see how the new Razer Blade Stealth with the 10th generation Intel Ice lake processor does with the same 2080 ti eGPU setup given it would potentially present a slightly less restrictive CPU bottleneck. It would also be interesting to compare those benchmarks to those of the new Stealth's internal GTX 1650 GPU. If there is comparable performance between the two that might completely eliminate the benefits of getting an eGPU for that particular laptop.

    RGB lighting is good for another 15fps if you run 1 color setting !
    I suppose ton of people use laptops because they lack the space to have a desktop, and not because of portability. In East Europe for example, the flats typically average 45-65 sq meters. Toss in a wife and kids, and a desktop is pretty much out of the question unless you want to continually repair things that get kicked around or displays that get knocked over. In this scenario an external GPU would make sense as you could get an older enclosure and maybe a 1070 or 1080 used at a decent price. New laptops in moscow for example, can cost you well over $1800 for a bottom of the line gaming, unless you can find some close out models.
    I would love to have a desktop, but no space to put it. We knocked the balcony windows and door out, put a marble top on the remaining part. Sort of like a mini-bar. That's where the Dell G7 17 resides.

    It was necessary to compare the performance of a laptop with eGPU with the performance of the same video card installed on a desktop computer.
    There are two reasons for the difference in performance in favor of a desktop computer. The first is a processor, for comparison accuracy it is necessary to use a processor equal to the performance installed in the i7-8565u laptop. The second is the ability of the Thunderbolt 3 interface to use the full power of the video card while not exceeding the flow of valid data for the interface’s capabilities of 40 Gbit/s, otherwise the video card will not use all its power.
    I would like to hear comments on this subject.

  • @Repudiator

    This might be a dumb question since this is an old video, but did you actually get around to making a video testing the performance of GPUs in an eGPU like this versus the same GPU in a desktop? I ask because I've recently ordered a Blade 15 Base since the price was dropped to shift old stock before the 10th gen ones come in and had in mind to use of these down the line to up the graphical horsepower if/when I needed to; and it's been hard to find concrete metrics on that comparison.

      Of course the same card will have better performance in a desktop than in a eGPU.

  • @WafflesASAP
    @WafflesASAP 4 года назад +1

    The performance bottleneck at 1080p is _horrendous_ over thunderbolt. If you're going to spend $400 on an eGPU plus the $1000+ dollars for a 2080ti, you _better_ be getting 200-250+ FPS in games like Fortnite for Christ's sake. Razer has got some balls charging this much for something akin to a PCI riser board in a plastic and aluminum case with some RGB LEDs and a built-in USB hub (plus the gigabit ethernet connection, but gigabit ethernet is so ubiquitous and cheap it doesn't add more than $5 of value to this product in my opinion).

    The performance with a 2080 Ti egpu is only equivalent to a midrange gaming laptop with GTX1660Ti. It's better to build a desktop with a lower end GPU or just replace the Razer Stealth with a midrange gaming laptop for around the same price.

I'm considering buying an external GPU enclosure together with an RTX 2070 Super or RTX 2080 Ti GPU in order to play Half-Life Alyx in VR. Do you think this setup could deliver good performance? As far as specs are concerned, I see that this setup does meet the recommended requirement for Half-Life Alyx. But I'm not sure whether I'm missing some important point there. Hey Jarrod, pumped about the next video you teased as it will prob answer this question, but I have a 1080 ti in an older build that I haven't used much since I got the new Aero 15, do you think I'd get any performance gain at all over the 2070 max q if I put the 1080 ti in an enclosure and ran it to an external monitor? I know egpu setups lose like 10-30% performance... Thank you for your highly detailed videos, love this channel!

      Hmm yeah I think so, unfortunately I don't own a 1080 Ti so unfortunately I won't be able to test that out when I do the big eGPU test :( for reference when I used my 1080 in the past it was similar to the 1060 Max-Q in the Dell G5 I was testing with, so it's hard to say, it might end up being close, but I'd think the 1080 Ti would still have an edge, whether or not that makes it worth buying an enclosure for it is hard to say though.

    • @MadCoLabs
      @MadCoLabs 4 года назад

      @@JarrodsTech Thanks for the reply! Yeah it's a tough call, my 1080 ti build is pretty dated, win 7, 4790k (still a champ), and 16 gigs of pretty slow ddr 3 ram, so I'm prob already bottle knecking the gpu. My Aero has the 9th gen i7, win 10 pro and 32 gigs of 2667 ram and I'm dying to know if my Aero with egpu would be a slower, faster or equal performer. Guess I should just get an egpu enclosure and find out for myself, in the name of SCIENCE! Cheers

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад

      Using a 1050 is absolutely pointless with an eGPU enclosure, it would probably perform worse than a 1030, plus every single graphics card would double testing time and this already took long enough to do. I will do something in future where I test 10+ GPUs, but I definitely can't do different graphics every video. This is such an expensive and niche solution that it makes sense to show the best case scenario.
