As a neurosurgeon in the US, I would say this a great and very informative video. The only criticism I have is that you keep mentioning the surgeries are crude and less precise. I also did plastic surgery rotations as well as rotations in various other surgical subspecialties as a med student and I chose neurosurgery for the technical nuances of the surgeries. Micro vascular decompressions, skull base surgeries as you mentioned, surgical ligation of aneurysms, av fistulas, endoscopic surgeries, intramedullary spinal cord lesions, endovascular procedures (pipeline stents, selective embolizations, thrombectomies,)duroplastys, cerebral bypasses(ever see 10-mm prolene sutures used to anastamose vessels 2mm in size)? Even XLIF approaches for the spine with small working corridors are much more nuanced than most surgical procedures. DBS, stereoEEG placement (2-3mm off target can make a huge clinical difference in outcomes). Corpus callosotimes, selective amygdalohippocampectomies, functional hemispherectomties... the list goes on and on. The big difference in neurosurgery is that if you make a mistake, the stakes are much higher: you can cause a stroke leading to aphasia, plegia, blindness, coma and death. Hit the spinal cord during surgery and your patient will never walk again. The stakes are much higher. I’m not sure where you did your neurosurgery rotation but your exposure must have been very limited. to say it’s crude or imprecise in any way is an injustice to the field. Nonetheless I think your video is very informative and insightful. You guys did a great job. I will definitely recommend it to any medical student who is considering the field.

melina ugh while that’s true to a degree, trauma surgeons have to think faster than a lot of specialities, especially ones who almost always have scheduled cases. with trauma, you go from not knowing what you’re working with to operating in minutes. that’s usually very different than specialities such as general or peds. while those specialities are very difficult in their own respects, they aren’t all about quick, high-stake thinking, most of the time.
Woah, I didn’t expect the field to be so male-dominated (lol I should’ve known). I got to be in the OR during a neurosurgery in undergrad and the surgeon was a female! Which was super awesome! She was so chill and of course super smart!
I remember watching this video 2 years ago when I was a MS4, now I'm a neurosurgery resident! Hope to do a cerebrovascular fellowship afterwards. Here some tips to whoever is interested: 1) If you're a high schooler, go to the best possible college you can. This will help you get into an elite medical school 2) A lot of neurosurgeons come from top 20 medical schools, work hard in college and get into a great med School. Becoming a neurosurgeon will be significantly harder if you go DO or lower tier MD. 3) You need to do well in medical school, but by that point the pressure isn't as high. You don't need to be 1st in your class, but ace the Step 1/Step 2. Get involved with neurosurgical research. 4) Don't force a circular peg into a square hole, surgery isn't for most and you'll realize that by the time you're doing rotations as a MS3. Feel free to reply with any questions about the field!
@@bobbygob292 Absolutely. Medical schools, let alone neurosurgery residencies, are never going to look at your high school grades. You just need to focus on doing well in college.
@@mcdavid4606 Is it possible to get into a good college if you did badly in freshman year of high school but did well in every other year of high school?
@@bobbygob292 Yes. You're only 14/15 years old when you're a freshman hopefully schools should so some leniency. For college obviously do what makes sense for you location/money wise but what worked for me was going to the best college I got into (Columbia). I have 0 doubt that was a major factor in connecting me into a top 20 medical school.
@@mcdavid4606 I just wanted to ask how unlucky is it for someone going to a local university to be able to get into a top tier medical school if they are top of their class, say a school like University of Houston or University of Dallas?

During _high_ _school,_ I was shadowing some neurosurgeons because one of the physicians there was a family friend. One surgeon was notorious for being the perfect stereotype of the arrogant, large-and-in-charge hardass who was simply better than you… and he’d make certain you knew it. So I’m standing a few feet away from him fully scrubbed in the OR, and he starts rattling off some polite questions, ignoring most of what I said in response. Clearly he missed the part when I told him I was a _high_ _school_ student lol. So eventually, once he reached whatever part of the spine he was operating on, he suddenly starts launching questions at me about god-only-knows what branch of whatever T3 nerve etc etc… and after like the fifth “I don’t know,” he literally says “Jesus, the fuck do you know?” Luckily I have a thick skin and was mostly laughing at the ridiculousness in my head lol, but at that point, all the scrub nurses immediately launched at him like a pack of hyenas, explaining to him (again) that I was just a junior in HS, not a medical student lol. As per usual, the scrub nurses saved the day.
Oh yes! Finally I've been waiting for a video like this one for ages. I want to be a neurosurgeon when I grow up and this will undoubtedly help me. Thank you for another great video Med School Insiders.
Lovedddd this one! I’ve wanted to become a neurosurgeon since the day i first studied about brain. Even now nothing makes me as excited as studying neuroscience. I think I am definitely interested in being a doctor that specializes in the brain, but honestly, I think I would much rather be a neurologist or a neuroradiologist. That being said, I think Neurosurgeons have one of the toughest jobs in all of medicine, and I think it probably is one of the more gratifying fields there is when things work out.
Likewise. Seeing how apparent competition is and how I didn’t make best use of high school, I do intend on broadening my horizons and look into lesser competitive fields that revolves around the brain.
Wonderful. That what the most detailled video you ever made. Thanks you so much. If possible i'd love to see a video about cardiac surgery. I love your channel
I don't want to be a neurosurgeon, but I'm a person with hydrocephalus. In the years since my diagnosis and surgery I had the opportunity to 'study' the neurosurgeons at that hospital and tried to step into their shoes. I saw the most caring, humble human beings although their lack of sleep and all the though patient diagnosis. As I moved from a general hospital to a neurosurgery hospital for surgery, I could tell the difference, for me as a patient it was hard seeing all the suffering people and I just couldn't imagine how it feels for doctors who see them and may have no solution to their pain. And as the video mentions it, yeah, there was only one woman in 5 five neurosurgeons, but was the most thoughtful one. Oh, and about the satisfaction of saving someone's life, this is so true you can't even imagine the boost of energy it gives to you. So, good luck to all the future neurosurgeons here. Don't give up to your dream no matter how hard it may be.
As I watched this video, I felt joy in my heart and a big smile appeared on my face! I don't know, I feel like neurosurgery is for me! Something sparks inside of me, like it's the right thing to do! 😁
I'm currently pre med, majoring in behavioral neuroscience, I really enjoy learning about the brain, but phew that's over 10+ years of schooling not even including your undergrad. You would have to be extremely extremely dedicated to your career and love your job to pick this field. I have no idea if I want to pursue neurosurgery, but it's one of my many interests.
I love the brain so much, but I would be so unhappy with the unpredictable and long hours. It breaks my heart though because neurosurgery (particularly emergent and functional) is absolutely fascinating to me
I'm just in a nurse who works in neurosurgery who is watching this to satisfy their curiosity of the field but this is for sure the medical field I have respected the most and feel they do the most for their patients. Where I work has quite a few female residents as well. Probably won't do as much as to actually go for it though 😅. I will keep to nursing I think.

melina ugh while that’s true to a degree, trauma surgeons have to think faster than a lot of specialities, especially ones who almost always have scheduled cases. with trauma, you go from not knowing what you’re working with to operating in minutes. that’s usually very different than specialities such as general or peds. while those specialities are very difficult in their own respects, they aren’t all about quick, high-stake thinking, most of the time.
Woah, I didn’t expect the field to be so male-dominated (lol I should’ve known). I got to be in the OR during a neurosurgery in undergrad and the surgeon was a female! Which was super awesome! She was so chill and of course super smart!
Mine was female too, she was terrible.

Not surprising, men are naturally more likely to go after jobs with longer hours than women
(Chill out, I never said all men or all women do this)
I remember watching this video 2 years ago when I was a MS4, now I'm a neurosurgery resident! Hope to do a cerebrovascular fellowship afterwards.
Here some tips to whoever is interested:
1) If you're a high schooler, go to the best possible college you can. This will help you get into an elite medical school
2) A lot of neurosurgeons come from top 20 medical schools, work hard in college and get into a great med School.
Can you become a neurosurgeon if you got very bad grades in freshman year of high school but very good grades in every other year of high school?
I will graduate from medical school in two months and I will run for neurosurgery residency
*I wish to get back to this comment as a specialist in 7 years*
Wish me luck
Edit:
Under some circumstances I did one year in *Radiology* and gained some experience in it and now I am doing *Gynecology* for also one year. It's just temporary until I have a stable place to live in then I will run for *neurosurgery residency*

What really surprised me is that this video didn´t discourage me at all - the opposite. Neurosurgery is still one of my 3 most desirable specialties. It made me want to look more into functional neurosurgery though, because it connects the things I love: medicine and technology and innovation.
I'm in my last year of hs and have been passionate about neurosurgery since middle school. watching this video made me realise just how hard it is to become a neurosurgeon and to be fair I'm definitely not the smartest but tbh now I'm just even more determined and motivated to study till I drop dead so i can become a neurosurgeon. this video was very helpful thank you

I love that all the information you give about a subject is summarized just on point, beautifully structured and easy to digest. I follow your channel for quite a while and, as a 2nd year med school student, you're gold (in terms of medical information as much as in productivity and mental health matters). I would absolutely love to work with the brain in a few years, but I'm trying to keep my eyes open for anything I might like. Thanks so much man, I appreciate you. Stay safe!

Lonely Pluto no need to go off on her you know. yes he isn’t a real neurosurgeon obviously and yes you’re right people on that show very very badly portray the rigorous life and experiences of surgeons. but it’s okay for her to think of him during this video, he isnt a real neurosurgeon obviously but if she watches the show and thought about him it’s okay, as long as there’s an understanding between a show and real life.
Lonely Pluto bro you’re being a gatekeeping, elitist jerk. Just in case you needed someone to tell you. I don’t care how right you are (even though you’re not), you’re just being unnecessarily mean, and you sound insufferable.

I have gotten more information from this video than from my entire life

Why are you shadowing in high school 😂? Shadowing hours don't count until college

Gastroenterologist, this is one that I would love to learn about because I’ve always considered this as one of my choices for specialty
In 16 years I am going to come back here and say that I a made it, that I finally became a neurosurgeon.
This was very informative. Appreciate the quality 👌
