V14E1: GPS Workflow and Prelude to West

- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- A short episode this week in advance of Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona. In this video, I describe my process for recording my travels and marking points-of-interest in GAIA GPS. I explain how I organize my waypoints and track logs in an episodic folder structure, and also why I utilize Dropbox to share my GPS data with Patreon subscribers. Features natural scenery, four-wheel drive adventure, and monotonous geekery that also serves as a lovely sleep aid.

You're an incredibly intelligent and thoughtful guy, Chris. This video is just one example why your channel is THE best overland channel on RUclips. You don't live the overland life on the weekends, or when on vacation. Your life IS overland.
It took me quite a bit of time to figure out a similar methodology. This should be helpful to a lot of people.
As I learned in the Boy Scouts......the art of not getting lost....is staying found. GPS is good at that. Grin.
Super helpful! Thank you for sharing this info. I’ve been considering Gaia and now see that it’s the one to get! Guess I’d better set up drop box too:)
I was very happy to meet you and Shannon at OEW. Your channel is a favorite of mine and, as I said then, even my wife will watch you. Stay safe and I'll be watching your adventures.
Nice to meet you at the show. Leaving here Monday for Colorado. I’ve been doing this since 1975. We just called it “Wheelin”, and if you spent the night, you upgraded to “Truck camping “ “OVERLANDING” just sounds more expensive. Safe travels!
It's more expensive now because it's more popular and a huge industry has grown around it. It used to be a Coleman lantern and stove, some matches, couple jugs of water, cooler of beer, hot dogs and hamburgers and a paper map. And of course a 4WD vehicle.
Some good stuff here - hope you're enjoying Overland Expo!
You will love the new iPad mini. It’s incredible upgrade for jeep navigation.
Hey Chris and Shannon. Pleasure meeting you both at Overland West! I forgot to ask you about editing 4K vid and what you recommend, Apple or PC. Anyways if you are ever in Prescott area look us up. Tom, Darlene and Mary Lou.
Hi Chris, as always a pleasure to follow your explanations. You are such a good and easy speaker, able to deliver even the most technical stuff charmingly entertaining. Really, beside the whole travel/overlanding content its your very personal and enjoyable way delivering that content thats makes it special. Thanks again, a real gift and YT gem.
It was an honor and a privilege to meet you at expo! Nova pup says hi! Let me know if you need some places for the Olympic peninsula or Northeastern CA
Was great to randomly run into you in Flagstaff early Friday morning...seeing you in a coffee shop on your computer prepping your video felt like being in a live Venture4WD episode. 😄
I have found the same dataset/data management challenges you described and I do much less exploring than you. I am impressed with your organization and planning. This makes your channel and your patreon participants receiving value beyond just a “fan club”. 👍
Enjoy the video. I always have to remind myself of naming conventions for files and organization. I went to my first Expo in Flagstaff, but was with family so I didn’t get a chance to stop by. There is so much to see, almost, no it is a little overwhelming, but in a good way. Hope to see you at the next.
Thanks Chris for all that you do..it was a pleasure to meet you..you truly inspire
It was great meeting you at the Ursa Minor booth!
Fine Chris, I'll just watch your reruns again. Lol. Enjoy yourself
Take time if you are in Colorado to drive Williams Pass (tough 4WD) over to the road through the Pallisades up to Alpine Tunnel. Its spectacular. The route down from Pallisades to Pitkin is closed due to landslides in the Pallisades downslope from where Williams Pass road reaches it. Good luck!
Your Channel is the best. I'm extremely glad you've shared info about using your Gaia Apps. I am not computer savvy - I get by, but that's it - so your sharing is really helpful
Glad you have a hike recording type and you use it quite frequently 🥾😀 Too many overlanders are glued to their rigs. On Gaia I use a similar recording strategy with bicycle as an additional category. I use Gaia's Cycling mode for route profiling a lot. My enduro electric MTB 🚲is what Orangie is to you 😁
"Mom I'm an adventurer" You really are man! Love your videos. Had a chance to see you and Orangie at the expo. Wanted to take a minute to say hi, but you were already engaged with another fan and didn't want to interrupt. Was just nice to see in person. Great Expo and worth the trip.
Hello Chris, it was nice to meet you in person at the Overland West Expo. For the amount of miles you put Orangie through, it looks pretty good. Hope my JLU looks as good after similar amount miles. I have amassed and constructed a large library of tracks to travel. Now that I am finished with the major items on my Honey Do List, I can enjoy my retirement as I envision, overloading with my wife. Both my wife and I enjoy watching your adventures and happy you have a companion to share the experience with.
Thank you for sharing the details, I’ve often wondered how. Patreon’s are surely blessed.😎
Thank YOU . Thank you for explaining your processes . Now I would like to be a PATREON subber .
Can't wait to follow you around the NW.
Can't wait to see your vid on overland expo west
Morning, Chris...
Now's the time for you to be exploring my New England, Maine to be exact...
I agree!
I really need to watch this… I’ve been on the road since I subbed and still haven’t figured out how to bring all of your info into my systems…
Lol, Love the quote, " Adventure is NOT afoot" ! Wish I could have made it out to Overland Expo in Loveland! Would have been awesome to meet you and other RUclips Overlanders. Safe Travels!
just put it on your bucket list -- it opens late in spring and closes September 1. This is one of the highest areas in Colorado.
Your GAIA info is greatly appreciated. Good overview without info overload. :)
Kool, have fun Chris & Shannon.
Have really grown to like all of your videos, thanks. Saw you at the EXPO, but you were busy talking with another couple. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay while in AZ.
I’d love to see you explore the southeast a bit. Fall foliage season coming up. Great smoky Mountains national park has some phenomenal hikes.
Good evening from Houston Texas. I am a big fan and have been watching you since you first hit the road. From you moving out from your home and to the great build on your Orange Jeep. This comment will more likely not get to you, but I hope you can answer some fan mail. I would love a picture or a sticker of your brand with an autograph on it. Thank you for every episode you post. I would like to travel and follow your footsteps, but my life took a different direction. I am a US Navy Veteran and divorced with two kids. So… moving out to start my own journey is going to be postponed until my kids get older or graduate from school. My name is Brandon and thank you!!! Be safe on your future adventures.
Hey Brandon - you can still explore locally. You don't have to wait until the kids grow up to seek out some adventure in your life! Overland exploring can be a great activity with kids.
If I would live in the USA (I live in The Netherlands, Europe) I would be a patron for sure, to follow your adventures with my 4WD 👍👌🥇✌️
You could still become a patron - why not plan an overlanding trip to the US and follow in Chris' footsteps? Hopefully, one day he will ship his jeep to Europe and start touring there.
Great info Chris, thanks for sharing.
what do you use to mount your phone and ipad?
So for this episode adventure is just a toe. Any episode that starts with Finnegan napping is a good one though.
The amount of information you have logged over the years is incredible and has to be worth the Patreon sub. You are putting a lot of hard work in to that. I have to admit I don't subscribe but I do plan on it soon.
Looking forward to the coming episodes. Safe travels.
It was wonderful to meet you at OEWest!
You do a lot of work in the background you put a lot of stuff out there. 👍👍😀🇨🇦
Great video. 👍
Awesome work. Keep going ✌️
I would love to meet you at the expo! Have fun!
I think next summer you ought to head to the east. More mountains and hills with trees, big woods and greenery. JMHO.
Tight bro, just ordered an iPad mini 6 specifically for Gaia gps. Tho every time I check 67 designs they are out of stock for both the iPhone and tablet mounts. Lame.
You have a tab open for "Build Your 2022 Land Rover" when you are showing the Gaia web interface...say it ain't so Chris!
WTF?
Amazing GPS.
Thank you for a good description and introduction to Gaia GPS.
Enjoy Overland Expo.
IN-JOY Your travels
I see a new 2-terabyte 10 or 11-inch iPad in your future. Baja Mexico?
Will you be attending a overland expo this year?
No, no plans to attend any this year.
Awesome video. Just a FYI…. I never got a notification about the new episode. Other you tubers have been having this problem also. Not sure what’s up with RUclips.
@venture4wd New ipad mini is out, are you buying it? Maybe 5G model? :) can you make a liitle review for travellers? Greetings!
Awesome vid !!! Sorry I can’t make flag overland
Hope you explore Florida one day
So I guess you will not be attending Overland Expo East. Sorry to hear that. Great description of how you manage .gpx files. Thanks for that.
Chris are you still using Ipad 4 Non GPS, and using Garmin to connect if need views GPS location?
Nice shirt. Where did you get it?
Bummer! We got to see Orangy... But not Chris. Had fun at the expo, though.
I’d love to use my older iPad for a similar purpose. Does anyone have recommendations or experiences to share regarding external Bluetooth gps units?
Chris, when do you plan to be around the PNW next? As a subscriber I’d like to do something cool like the coast or whatever… I live in Longview. Wa
Ok, where do you put your legs when recording facing rearwards in Orangie?
what i would pay to have access to your GAIA Gps saved roads/campsites
Finnegan needs a pedicure. Also- Had a problem with Gaia GPS this week. Sync'd and downloaded my maps before my trip but the maps didn't display properly when I was offline. I was a bit disappointed but at least my points of interest and planned routes were there. I've used it before and think Gaia had difficulty with my data being stored on my SD card (Samsung Tablet). I was lucky as my MVUM maps in Avenza worked fine so that made up for Gaia's problems. I had to log out of my Gaia account and resync everything later to get it to work correctly. 3rd world problems....
Try South Padre island again just don't come during spring break . Oh yes there is good fishing and also good deep sea fishing . If you want more info please let me know . I would like to take you fishing . In October the Redfish are running and a good place to go is at the north end of the island If you go deep sea fishing Clapton Murphy is the best .
Have you ever considered hiring a PA to help with your work load? It's possible to hire someone and give them precise instructions on how to do a certain task, which could be useful, if you're looking to spend more time filming and less time dealing with all the GAIA GPS elements of your travels. Then again, I'd imagine that having complete oversight of the whole process is a great way of knowing exactly what's going on and that you are fully responsible for any, and all, mistakes, as and when they arise. I'm pretty sure you'd have no shortage of people who would be willing to lighten your load. 😉
was going to suggest something similar. You could use upwork to find a freelancer to handle the workload (at least the GPS data organization)
Take care enjoy overland expo! 👍👍👍👏👏👏
This is genius!
Yay!
Sounds like GAIA GPS needs to create a PRO version for guys like you and Kevin. Have a good time at EXPO West!
Test drove the coolest jeep today. I want one so bad but the back seat is just a little to small for car seats. Finding out I am going to have a second baby in the future dosen't help
Chris can you please ask Ursa Minor if they are planning a tent for the new defender 110 . Thank you
Great video thank you!
Gaia is awesome
I think Texas requires a front license plate. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Saturdays I look forward to the weekly Venture4WD episode. In the last 3 episodes, I started to see you slip into a predictable routine. This one really sucks epic sweety balls, but I think you already know that. I come here to see adventure. Like the Jeep crawling over new terrain, visiting a different ghost town, or a small old town in the middle of the mountains. Not a lesson in your workflow and Gaia GPS....AGAIN. Get your ass out there and discover something! Why spend time going to Expos? Ditch the Rebal, grab the GF and the Jeep and go explore something cool for a month. If she can't go then leave her there to watch the dog. Just do something.
I think this is the third time BUT maybe only the second time we went over this but thanks..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Yes, but not everyone watches every single episode like us...
😵💫…………….WHAAAAT ?
GIa-GPS has the street I live off of Mis-named so I don’t have much confidence in it.
...and you misspelled GAIA. I've lost all confidence in you. I don't think there is a hyphen in 'misnamed' and I don't think it needs to be capitalized in the middle of a sentence.
I don’t sell my service to you or anyone.
My cat's breath smells like cat food.
