  • It's Friday, so it's time for this week's 'Tea Reads' episode! In this video, I'm joined by my Mum (Donna), and we share our regular Friday routine of a teatime chat about books over tea and a sweet treat. In our 'Tea Reads' episodes, we'll be sharing great short reads that can be enjoyed in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea. In today's episode, we're baking Yorkshire Parkin, a type of gingerbread traditionally eaten around Bonfire Night. As we settle down to eat it by the kitchen fire, we share some appropriate reads for the 5th of November. Happy weekend everyone! Take care and keep safe.

Oh, I was so excited to see "The World of Thrush Green"! I was super lucky and able to get an old library copy of this book. I love Miss Read so much, especially the Thrush Green series. The Yorkshire Parkin looked yummy! I love gingerbread tasting desserts :D I love your skirt and your Mom's top - very pretty! I wish I had somewhere to wear my Grandma's brooch - it's such a treat to see you and your Mom wearing one! Thank you! *hugs!*

Love you two girls ! Your chat is so comforting and engaging. Perfume and the seasons, such a spot on concept thankyou . Oh my goodness I'm a Miss Read fan being a teacher in the country myself. so many stories of community foibles is such a comfort read. Bonnie Night was a real important community date in our childhoods. The boys and men would bustle about for weeks making huge daunting mounds of wood tyres branches etc. The dads would light the bonnie at dusk the crackers and sky rockets would all explode and the boys would get up tp mischief! Baked potatoes and a barbecue were a feature for us. Miss it so very much. Thanks for the memories and the opportunity here in Oz to reconnect and reflect on our past. No Parkin here but the recipe is so close to our ANZAC { Australia and New Zealand Army Corps] biscuits we make with golden syrup and oats made and sent to our soldiers in the WW1 so we make these biscuits every April, our Autumn to remember their bravery and sacrifice. Thank you a delight as usual for this Anglophile! thinking of you all over there in our UK as we tentatively emerge from a pretty hard year ourselves.

Lovely Tea Reads...again! Not only is parkin from Yorkshire, so was Guido Fawkes. You can still see places associated with him there and some of his descendants-the Horton-Fawkes-live not too far away in the Yorkshire town of Otley. Have a happy, warm weekend.

I love, love, love these mother and daughter chats! They make me so happy - as did the excerpts from the books you both read today. I have The Country Child by Alison Uttley and several Miss Read books, which I adore, but I must try one Woman's Year by Stella Currey.

What a joy! Thank you both. I thought of that exact Miss Read passage. I remembered the part about the potatoes that Percy Hodge donates. It reminds me of Almanzo Wilder in Farmer Boy when he and his sister Alice eat baked potatoes by the field. Yorkshire Parkin sounds delicious. I love gingerbread.

Lovely video, Miranda. Just the antidote to these anxious times. Loved hearing about your seasonal scents. I rarely wear perfume as people these days have so many sensitivities. Though maybe now that everyone is wearing masks and keeping 6 feet apart, I could get away with it again. Silver linings.

Thank you so much Miranda, I really needed another Tea & Tattle episode, after a very Stressful week here in the US 🤦🏾‍♀️....You and Donna always make me feel like baking or getting cozy with a good book. After watching this video..I think 🤔 I want to read “Guy Fawkes, The Gunpowder Plot” by Maureen Appleton... One more thing Miranda, I finally finished my first Daphne Du Maurier book “Rebecca” it was great but was it supposed to end so abruptly...I got the kindle version, and I’m hoping they didn’t leave off the ending..🥰

I so look forward to these videos, I’m a northerner living in the south, my family still live in the north and I’ve so missed spending time with my mum during the last few months, lockdowns and tiers have made it very difficult consequently, being invited into your home and sharing time with you and your mum has become such a treat. Excellent tip about the oil and the treacle and it was interesting to hear about your seasonal perfume choices, I too have my winter and summer scents. Great choice of reads, having listened to your mum I’m off to get my Miss Read off the bookshelf to curl up with this evening and if you ever do make the ale and nutmeg punch I’d loved to know what it’s like, sounded most interesting, if not a little unusual 🤣
