Man, these are some pretty gruesome deaths for a childrens' arcade game. I almost feel sorry for all those poor kids back in 1984. Probably had nightmares playing this. :(
Very true. This game was at least one of those that gave you multiple choices, unlike games like Dragon's Lair or Space Ace where you get one right choice and four bad ones.
I remember seeing a Halcyon when i was a kid in vancouver. If i am honest I think it was at Expo 86 in some technology exhibition, but that seems a bit too late, so it would have been a little earlier in some other technology show. I was less than 10 years old for sure, and I specifically remember this game being played.
Watch 1:38 very closely and keep playing it back and forth; watch for the spear to go right through his chest! They actually showed blood spurting out too, but it's so subtle, you'll miss it unless you keep playing it back and forth!
There's three other ones (not on this video) that I can think of now. 1. Thayer walks by the water, and is sucked in by a giant wave, causing him to drown. 2. Thayer 'replaces' the guardian of the bridge, and can't leave due to a force field. 3. Can't remember where, but Thayer gets weakened by some kind of magic mist, then if you fail to make a move, he dies.
It's funny, too, how in the second Cobra Commander one, the guy like stands there waiting for Thayer to take out his ball and chain before kicking his ass
Saw this game in the arcade many times, with its thoroughly abused keyboard. Never saw anyone actually spend money on it. This video reveals, if nothing else, the animators' fascination with death by rapid decomposition.
@Tomsonic41 Yes, you're right, but I think those sequences are only included in the Home version of the game, and not the Arcade release. #1 Happens when chossing the wrong path by the water creatures near the beggining of the game. #2 Happens when you give the bridge keeper a certain item, but I can't rememeber which. (either the Orb of Quiod, or the Talisman I think) #3 Happens when you enter the forest when the Black Sorcerer casts a spell. The follow up death, by not moving, is @0:26.
When I saw the screenshot of this video, somehow, I instantly thought of this game, even though its been nearly 10 years since I took the CD-I out the cupboard. I remember this game having some pretty serious looking deaths for a family game. Oh wait this games not called Kingdom? Well its the same game! thats weird, not even like it could be a regional thing is it?
Jesus Christ. There's a whole generation of games where the hero has super dying powers. Turn the wrong corner? Gruesome death. Turn a different corner? Gruesome death. Hit the wrong button at the wrong time? Gruesome death. Hit the right button at the wrong time? Gruesome death. Hit no buttons? Gruesome death. Like there's sheets and sheets of different ways player characters used to die.
Not much I can guess on why they don't eat him - maybe enough things try to eat Thayer in this game - but pay close attention to their grab. One is biting Thayer and I'm pretty sure both are digging their claws into his spine, shoulder, and wrist. In other words, I'm thinking these are werelizards.
This is much more traumatizing than any of Dirk's deaths in Dragon's Lair (1 or 2), or Space Ace. Like, Thayer (and his game) don't have the same sense of humor. This game is obsessed with Thayer turning into a morbid skeleton and doing other traumatic things (now I'm a skeleton...now I'm a lizardman...now Cobra Commander in the desert kicks my ass...now I take out a ball and chain but Cobra Commander in the desert still kicks my ass!)
I'm gonna have trouble sleeping tonight. I'd have trouble building up the motivation to save a country where even the wheat is trying to kill you (2:55).
@sygo7g Oh, if only I could so experience the privilege of having him kill me:) I must instead live vicariously through Thayer's misfortunes (I was just using the "I" pronoun in my original comment as wishful thinking:)) (I'm just kidding/being goofy)

"When will they learn not to use magic here?"
Thayer has awesome screams. I like it.

Oh man, thank you for the spoiler alert!
Omg i love these old game cartoony deaths makes me laugh hard as hell. Anyone here remembers Dragon's Lair?
Kross Vilalobos I do.
me2
i noticed that nearly half of them are pretty much having that guy get violated badly
3:01
"An axe? I'll just slice you with my"
*schlink*
"HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE"

that one always makes me laugh, you can almost hear him going, "Well ok then, that was weird"
rofl
It is way too amusing to see this guy get wrecked on over and over again.
So here's what I've learned.
Don't touch anything, and don't get hugged.
Yes, magical wheat (the Silver Wheat) which can only be harvested using the Blood Sword of the Elder Kings.
It's funny, too, how in the second Cobra Commander one, the guy like stands there waiting for Thayer to take out his ball and chain before kicking his ass

This guy exploded three times, and turned into a skeleton twice. Geez, poor Thayer.

Yes. BEWARE THE WHEAT! O_O

You have failed me for the last time, Admiral.
Why hasn't anyone commented on that cheesy alert/siren wailing yet
@spudw2k Correction, #2 Happens when you re-visit the bridge keeper after handing him the Silver Wheat.

@WeaponXSigma Which ones did I leave out?
he sure gets a lot of hugs
How come when the lizard men touch Thayer, he turns into a lizard man? Why don't they eat him instead?
1:24 - Don't know why that constitutes as death if he can still move. Makes his quest a hella lot easier

yea, those smiles one their faces. :)
Someone needs to work that into a story idea for a show!
OMG! I forgot about this!
can you show me how you can get these death and/or how to avoid them?
Man these are gruesome, even look at 1:38 and pause, I see blood!
the death at 2:55 pleases me the most.

0:58 oh yes, the exploding bodies of water, the natural enemy of the curious man..

1:04 When you steal...make sure they're not looking xD
Lol, I love how electricity makes you explode XD
Yeah, but a lot of your choices still end in death here.
0:39 so quick,yet so funny
2:20 When will they learn not to use magic here?

0:48 SPLAT!!!

I'm gonna have trouble sleeping tonight. I'd have trouble building up the motivation to save a country where even the wheat is trying to kill you (2:55).
3:02 - 3:05 The viking dood just sat there like: .... Uh... Ok.
0:36 - I lol'd
is it my imagination, or does the odd voice at 0:12, sound like Darth Vader?
Thayer can get killed by wheat? Even Dirk the Daring wasn't that pathetic.
My lucky day! A diamond I'll just pick it up an- *BOOM*
@WeaponXSigma I can imagine that.
How the hell is most of this even FAIR!? Lol.
3:03 is priceless
The viking: "..."
