I cannot believe the audacity of Rick Dyer's claims in some of this news content. I mean, you'd have to promise something like 520 hours of content per game to justify that insane price tag, I guess... This video really puts into perspective the way the crew talks about the 90s "multimedia" era of video games.
Hey, Future Man here... Nolan Bushnell did the same kind of carnie huckster bragging bullshit when he founded Atari... and the man was literally a carnie at one point. This is nothing new. Yeah, looking back, it's obviously bullshit, but that was part of the business... making claims you could never follow up on. Did a lot of this pan out? No, but cant fault the man for being ambitious, and like it or not, laser disc gaming begat CD, DVD and BluRay storage for gaming so... he gets a pass.
@@DanJackson1977 my working theory is that every new industry/medium goes through its own "carnie stage" after there starts being money to be made in it, but before there's enough money riding on it to turn the audacious, "take the biggest claim you can make up and double it" carnie bullshitting into more measured, "say a lot without saying anything" corporate bullshitting. And video games are still a young enough industry/medium that some of the early "carnies" and their handiwork are still around - even here in the future, I've just recently heard Peter Molyneux described as exactly that, one of the industry's last true carnies, for better and for worse.
Appreciate the upload. I've been thinking about how to cut and upload this segment for way too long, it's completely amazing. "Look at the real future of video games, you jerks."
So the Halcyon was just an interactive video player? I mean, that works, as we know from Dragon's Lair, but where did all that R&D go aside from speech recognition? Eesh
Although you didn't get very far, I will say the Cold Fire from the Marsh Wastes could be used for those ghosts that gang up on you at the end. I haven't played the DVD version of this but I'm sure there was a button that led to picking up the Cold Fire while you enter the Marsh Wastes.
This system was amazing. Way ahead of its time. Just too expensive voice recognize shit is unnecessary and expensive.Graphics are a lot better than SEGA CD
I don't see any rendered graphics that make a comparison between Sega CD and this comparable, though. Laserdisc is a video format, so of course this pre-rendered video playback would look good.
13:22 is the most depressing and hilarious thing in gaming history.
"It places the controller out of your hand... and into your mouth" XD
i honestly can't believe it. it's so hilarious.
"So secret we can even say its name"
*Camera goes into a room with sign saying THAYER'S QUEST*
they're referring to the halcyon console itself, which was unnamed at the moment
9:31 Rick Dyer: “Bomb”
RDI Halcyon: “Say no more, fam.”
*company goes under*
One of the best unprofessional fridays ever, by far.
This was way before its time and I actually really love the technology. Very advanced for its time.
+JMAX GAMES You would've loved it!

e: adjusted for inflation, a halcyon console would cost roughly $5500 today
Update from the year 2024: Adjusted for more inflation, it would now cost roughly $7291.
"How did they get there direct feed, they just point a camera to the screen?"-Vinny
