Damn. A vídeo on Melvin Manhoef and now one on Badr Hari! Loving it. And… I can give you some more insight on what Badr is like with those that are close to him, and a story lol. Badr is incredibly loyal to those that are close to him. He always treated me with kindness and respect. In fact, while I spent time at Mikes Gym in Holland, Badr trusted me enough to actually try some grappling. But only with me. He knew that he could work hard, but not have me grab a submission and injure him in any way. Mike Passenier felt it might even help him a little with getting on the inside and being able to manipulate and move guys around. So it was fun to see Badr excited to come to the gym and want to jump in and grapple with me :) And, I travelled with him to Japan when I was cornering Melvin. He was supposed to fly out to Korea after from there. He was going to fight Hong Man Choi. While at the Dream event, he actually got in the ring in and challenged anyone from the promotion to fight in K1, “Real fights, stand up fighting! “ he said. I later asked him why he did it and he told me that he was going to be “compensated well” for pulling such a stunt lol. It was pretty cool travelling around Tokyo with him. He was swarmed by fans all the time. I also have some interesting sparring session stories about Badr….
Another quick story about Badr was when he was an up in comer in K1, on the bus to one of the events, Badr was trash talking all the legends about how he was going to smash all of them! Aerts, Hoost etc were all quite annoyed but this young newcomer being so disrespectful. But that was Badr. He was trying to get any advantage he could get. Lol
So Badr at some point, didn’t really have very many sparring partners. Most wouldn’t last very long before being KOed 😮 I remember one time in particular where there was a giant Swiss kick-boxer, taller and bigger then Badr. He was courageous enough to get in there and spar with him. Badr at the time was working on a specific tactic that he wanted to use in his fight. He would corner this Swiss fighter and as he was shelling up, Badr would brutally knee the inside and outside of his thighs. It looked and sounded painful. After the round was finished, the Swiss fighter asked him to please stop doing that. So Badr said. No problem… Only problem is, now he forced Badr to actually spar how Badr normally spars. Second round starts and one over-hand right dropped the Swiss fighter. Poor guy eventually got up and started to complain that he heard a bell and why did Badr hit him after the bell. Badr even comically started looking around the gym asking people if they could find this “bell” that apparently went off 😆 To finish, I’ll say this. Badr definitely had a temper. However, like I said earlier, Badr loved his family (whom I met. Wonderful people) and he loved Mike Passenier. Him and Mike had a special bond. It was always nice to see such a beautiful dynamic between Mike and Badr. I don’t believe anyone else can do the job as well as Mike. Edit: I’m aware that Badr has changed trainers. Don’t know if Mike and Badr had a falling out or Badr just thought he needed a change. I’m just commenting on the time I spent while I was around them. Cheers
