      Easter Rising 😔

    • @tSp289
      @tSp289 4 года назад +94

@@Messala91 It references the Easter rising, but it's about the Troubles, specifically when a Provisional IRA bomb exploded in a shopping street in England and killed two boys aged 3 (who was buying a mother's day card) and 12, and injured 50+ shoppers. That, and the brutal repression by British/Loyalists... the point is 'What are you thinking? What's wrong with you?' to both sides.
A friend of mine's dad is English and his mum Irish, and they were living in Ireland at the time. He had to sleep with a shotgun under the bed (and that is not at all usual in Britain or Ireland, also illegal in most cases), not because of the locals, who were really friendly and accepting, but because they were afraid some thug involved in the politics would decide to make an example of them, as they'd been threatened a few times. Didn't work, they're still together and living in Wales.

    I can't believe I just found this..

    • @brettfordlakecityiowa4301

Although Audra credits herself as the songs author..... I am only stating this ......factually so. Because I know. I just do...
That Audra, did not, in fact, compose the lyrical or instrumental structure of the song. It is and always has been a true pain to my heart, knowing she has publicly and privately taken on the role, demeanor, and mental occupation.....of storytelling . In public . In voice, and in person. As a way of life. Making another person's reality, her own. It's sad, it's sick, and it's just ......time to call this a wrap.
And no. I'm not the author , either.
Jobi was. A jobi, that lived it. In reality. Until the IRA flat murdered him in broad daylight. Now you know.

Honestly, I was terrified of listening to the cover ever since I figured you were doing it by Audra's post. It's such an iconic song I felt it could be such a let down to hear a very clean and polished version of it considering how strong Dolores' voice was. But I'm so happy to find I have goosebumps on my arms. My favourite cover of yours although I'd gone without the zombie makeup considering the actual meaning of the song.

Very much this, the last sentence. Though I suspect that the many years of relative peace since the signing of the GFA means awareness of the full meaning of the lyrics to people, who may have not even born at that time, has not developed or has been lost, particularly for populations not directly affected by the 'Troubles'. I would hope that it has resonances for all those affected by the violence begot by sectarianism of whatever source in this present day.

One of my favorite cover song from F.t.E., because everything fits here. The completely otherworldly vocals, the massive, powerful drums, and the 'scrappy' guitar riffs.
Song about the terrible and bloody ongoing war conflict in Northern Ireland:
Zombie is considered a protest song against the Northern Ireland conflict. The song's lyrics were written by Dolores O'Riordan during the band's 1993 tour of England in memory of two children (Jonathan Ball and Tim Parry) who were killed during an IRA bomb attack in Warrington on March 20, 1993. Key passages refer to the Easter Rising of 1916 and its traumatic consequences.
The text says, among other things:
“It's the same old theme since 1916. In your head they're still fighting with their tanks and their bombs and their bombs and their guns. In your head, in your head they die.”
    - The Cranberries - Zombie"
Frederic C. Millet interpreted zombie as a metaphor that war and violence enable everyone to kill for no reason, like robots or the undead of the uprising at the time. In another line of text, the pointlessness of the violent conflict is reinforced by “What’s in your head, zombie”. At the same time, O’Riordan asks her audience why Ireland and England would still fight each other after all these years, as in the lyric “In your head they’re still fighting”.
Stylistically, the title is rather untypical for the band with an electric guitar riff that gives it a grunge or alternative rock character. The song, in E minor, is in 4/4 time. The intro, the ostinato chord progression Em-C-G-D, is played calmly by an undistorted electric guitar. Later, a distorted electric guitar, electric bass, drums and a tambourine were used, which resulted in an overall increase in volume and dynamics right up to the chorus. The female vocals are two-part at times and also become more expressive in the chorus. The quiet verses and the more dynamic chorus are repeated twice and are interrupted by solo passages from electric guitar and bass until the song ends quietly again.
The music video was released in the summer of 1994 and directed by Doug Friedman at H.S.I. Productions produced. As with all single releases from the “No need to argue” album, Samuel Bayer directed the album. The predominantly black and white video criticizes the ongoing violence in the Northern Ireland conflict up to the time of its release. In a first scene, the band is shown playing in a barracks without an audience. In another colorful scene, the singer Dolores, dressed entirely in gold, stands in front of a cross in the presence of children who are again made up in silver. A third black and white scene shows the children playing in a street war and British soldiers checking cars.
On 16 January 2018, following O'Riordan's death, Colin Parry, father of IRA victim Tim Parry, thanked O'Riordan for the "both majestic and also very real lyrics".
"Many people have become immune to the pain and suffering that so many people experienced during that armed campaign", he said. "To read the words written by an Irish band in such a compelling way was very, very powerful."
Paul Brannigan of Louder writes, "Not everyone, however, was impressed by [O'Riordan's] credentials for the role of commentator on one of the most complex conflicts of the modern era." AllMusic said the song "trivialised" the events of the Troubles, and that the "heavy rock trudge" did not play to the band's strengths. Upon the song's release, David Stubbs from Melody Maker said, "'Zombie' doesn't make a born-again fan of me, with its lethargic, samey, grungy riff lurching predictably towards anthem status. But I like Dolores O' Riordan's vocal, like Dana on heroin, all tattered, snarling and trembling at her wits' end." At the same time, Northern Irish band Schtum told Melody Maker, "She's from Limerick, what the fuck would she know? You're talking about the last 25 years of a much bigger and wider problem that has gone on for hundreds of years". Brannigan writes:
"Schtum hailed from Derry, a city 224 miles away from Limerick by road, but one which may as well have been on a different planet to the rural village where Dolores O’Riordan was raised. When the singer protested "It's not me, it's not my family", explicitly distancing herself from the violence in Northern Ireland, and its overspill into England and elsewhere, she spoke the truth: no-one from her family was present at the Battle of the Bogside in Derry from August 12-14, 1969, for instance, or on January 30, 1972, when soldiers from the Parachute Regiment opened fire on civil rights campaigners in the city, killing 14 unarmed civilians in a massacre which came to be known as Bloody Sunday. Equally, her family had the good fortune to be untouched by any of the atrocities claimed by the Provisional IRA (or any other paramilitary faction) during her lifetime. So removed, in fact, was O’Riordan from events in Northern Ireland that, in her lyrics to Zombie, she references "tanks" on the streets, perhaps confusing Belfast with Beijing."
Iestyn George from NME felt "the timing of this release, as much as the sentimental itself, seems more than a little askew".
    Very sad and unhappy,
that such a good musician has already died.
(Einer meiner Lieblings-F.t.E. Coversongs, weil hier alles passt.
What’s in your head, Zombie“ bestärkt. In your head they’re still fighting“.
