It really is an incredible commercial and you're right- there is a great unorthodox approach going on here. It seems from around 1966 onward, Madison Avenue was discovering commercials could really be as creative as the best theatrical films. This one has a blend of underground/silent era comedy/experimental film qualities. The jazz music is very unexpected here and adds even more spark to a commercial for shampoo.
