  • One of the many distinctive features of Robby the Robot are the "Radar Rings" on either side of his head. These rings are Robby's "ears", and the blinking blue lights mounted nearby are his "eyes". In this video, I walk through the construction of these parts for my full-scale Robby the Robot replica (and make something for those cold nights on Altair IV along the way).
*Update* The circuit diagram near the end has the resistor in the wrong place (it will only protect one LED). See the updated PNG on my OneDrive for the corrected version
The files for this (and other) projects are on my OneDrive at: onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%2...

Great video. Do those electric motors have integral gear reduction, or are the rings rotating at the speed of the armature? I seem to recall in some appearances of the original Robby suit that the rings spun at different speeds from one another.

In my design, the rings rotate directly off the shaft. You can buy the motors geared to 3.5 ,15, 30, or 70RPM plus tweak that a little depending on the voltage (they are 12v, but I am using 9v in the video). You could also use an appropriate potentiometer if you wanted to make the speed adjustable.
