Perfecting Robby the Robot's Sax Valves
I was just about to install the Sax Valves (Why aren't they called Sax Key Rests?) on my Robby when I went back and looked at some photos. I decided to recreate my own version to more closely match the original.

Building Robby the Robot's Radar Rings

    Hi, sax player here. The valve is really the whole unit, but thinking of a valve as something that opens and closes (think more in terms of a heart valve than a faucet), I would say the actual valve action occurs at the point where what you call the "key" meets what you call the "rest" for the key. This is where the on/off function of a valve action occurs. Love your videos, and love Robby.

    Everything sounds Great Mike ! And I'm glad you have such great OCD to make sure all your parts are up to snuff 👍Filleted edges on the Sax Domes would be correct since most of Robby's parts were vacu-formed over bucks to create the parts. Even removing the end domes that are half spheres reveal Robby's original plastic color which shows thru those pieces.

    Great job on the home-made dome for Robby. if you study the original Rooby in the Forbidden planet movie beside the fancy cut around the top of the fins like you mentioned you can also see that the back side of the dome was horribly rippled. But since they were painting it, I guess it was good enough based on the time constraints. Thank you for sharing your build with the world. Hope some of my dome building was of help in some ways. I have made 3 dome slugs through the years. The first was all wood and turned-on a lath. But I found that no matter how smooth I sanded the wood that when the hot plastic hit the wood the grain would rise and show a bit in the dome. So then I made a high heat resin slug for the dome that was basically hollow and filled with wood scraps with resin poured in as well for strength. The vacuum system I was using would crush any dome slug that was not internally supported in some way. I was going to just pull the plastic over the dome slug as well, but I took a trip to vacuum forming shop and told them what I was trying to do and the found so interesting that the price was going to be about what I would spend on making a large heater and buying the PETG. So, you never know unless you ask when large Manufactuing places might just take a job for the fun of it unless you ask.

I believe your name comes up in a few of my videos :) I really enjoy your channel (ruclips.net/user/Robothut), learning about your amazing collection and all of your replica builds. In particular the tips, STLs, & instructions that you have given the Robby community (esp regarding the mechanicals!) have been invaluable. I was contemplating making a high-heat fiberglass plug and pushing it down into heated plastic instead of the pull-down method, but if I can make 2-3 more for spares with the current method I might quit while I am ahead. Right now I'm working on the head, leveraging 99% of your "block-head Robby" details. Thank you!

    Great video. Do those electric motors have integral gear reduction, or are the rings rotating at the speed of the armature? I seem to recall in some appearances of the original Robby suit that the rings spun at different speeds from one another.

    • @ogrinz_labs
      @ogrinz_labs 4 месяца назад

      In my design, the rings rotate directly off the shaft. You can buy the motors geared to 3.5 ,15, 30, or 70RPM plus tweak that a little depending on the voltage (they are 12v, but I am using 9v in the video). You could also use an appropriate potentiometer if you wanted to make the speed adjustable.

      PS - your discussion at the end about the leg spheres and how one angles back was interesting. There is a brief scene in the Lost In Space episode War of the Robots where it looks to me as if the leg spheres are not lined up correctly on one side. It takes place when Robby (a guest in this episode) is standing in front of the Jupiter II with the Robinson family confronting him. One of the lower leg spheres is sticking WAY out toward the back in an unnatural manner. This is fixed moments later.
