  • This song tells the story of the fight between Fingolfin (third High King of the Noldor) and Melkor (Morgoth, "The Dark Enemy") in front of his dark fortress Angband, after the elves were defeated and scattered in the Dagor Bragollach ("Battle of Sudden Flame") by Melkor's force led by the balrogs and the dragon Glaurung. Fingolfin managed to wound Morgoth seven times, but he didn't survive himself.
This song is a part of the concept album "Nightfall in Middle-Earth" (1998), the intro "Battle of Sudden Flame" is also part of this CD, as an interlude right before "Time Stands Still".
Please support Blind Guardian and purchase their current album "At The Edge Of Time".
I also advise the books "The Silmarillion" and "The Children of Húrin" for everyone, who wondered what had happened in the ages before the War of the Ring, which Aragorn and Elrond know so many old stories about, when they read "The Lord of the Rings".
    ----------
At The Edge Of Time"!

I was at a blind guardian concert and Hansi said: "We've had many epic tales today but in the next song we're going to top that". And I, as a Tolkien enthusiast have always said that the Fingolfin vs. Morgoth fight is the most EPIC story/scene in all of fantasy ever. Hearing Hansi agree was so incredibly empowering that I immediately screamed "TIME STANDS STILL". He then said: "A few of you know what I'm talking about"
That was the best moment of my life so far.

Thus he came alone to Angband's gates, and he sounded his horn, and smote once more upon the brazen doors, and challenged Morgoth to come forth to single combat. And Morgoth came.

But they say, that he took not the challenge willingly. For he alone of the Valar, knew fear. But the shrill song of the horn of Fingolfin echoed deep into the depths of Angband and he named Morgoth craven, and a lord of slaves. And shamed thus before all of his commanders and lieutenants he could not refuse the challenge.

Extensive information: Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor upon learning of the defeat of the Noldor before Morgoth, the Dark Lord who is basically Satan, much more powerful than Sauron who was working for him at that time. Fingolfin rode in a rage to the very gates of the Dark Lord's fortress, so furious that none dared stop him, neither the Balrog nor Sauron. He started banging on doors with his testicles as he blew his horn and challenged Morgoth to a 1vs1 duel and called them a coward and slave lord in front of all his servants. And though Morgoth heard him he would not go, for he was afraid, but he could not refuse the challenge before his own captains, so slowly and fearfully he went out. Fingolfin was not in the least startled to see the gigantic form of Arda's most powerful being appear at that moment, and instead began a long fight, wounding Morgoth 7 times causing him to cry out in pain before his armies. But he was dealing with basically a god, so eventually the King grew weary, and Morgoth got his foot on him, trying to slowly kill him. So with the last of his strength, Fingolfin plunged his sword into Morgoth's heel, and slashed through it, leaving him permanently lame. Morgoth never left his fortress after that, he always limped on one foot, and the wounds never fully healed.

The book is called "The Silmarillion" and was edited by JRR Tolkien's son Christopher in 1977, containing 5 parts. The story of this song is taken from chapter 18 (Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin) of the largest part, Quenta Silmarillion. It takes place in the First Age (The Lord of the Rings is at the ending of the Third Age more that 6,000 years later) during the Wars of Beleriand.

Everyone's all like "Feanor's crazy" but we have Fingolfin (who could barely walk from the size of his massive balls) angrily challenging the Literal Devil to a fight. Like boohoo Feanor slammed a door in Morgoth's face when Morgie was pretending to be reforming in Valinor, Fingolfin didn't run away when he saw the Kaiju-sized Vala, he was probably thinking "this fucking guy" and then he wounds Melkor seven times and when Melkor gets the drop on him, about to smash him, Fingolfin is like "I'm gonna fuck you up before I go" and stabs him THROUGH THE FOOT and Melkor has to live with that injury for the rest of the Age. Feanor is cool, but Fingolfin also needs to be acknowledged as batshit crazy awesome, too.

I love this song, its my favorite amongst the rest in their album - Nightfall in Middle-Earth. However, I don't think they did their research before making the song. If I am not mistaken, the 'Iron hills' belong to Dwarves. I think what they meant to say was 'Iron Mountains,' which was Melkor's first defence of his fortress kingdom of Utumno.
Still though I love this song, it was very well written and has some great lyrics!

Play the Black Captain mission in Shadow of Mordor while listening to this. You will not regret it.

That's more appropriate than you imagine... Few people actually remember the genealogy, but Fingolfin was Celembrimbor's great-uncle

Guess it would be even better, though, for the ending of "The Shining Lord" plotline

The book you would need to start with is the Silmarillion which is the story of the 1st age, when Elves were pretty much the badassess of the land as you can tell from the song which is about Fingolfin. The book is kinda a hard read seeing how it is written in the from of a historical textbook or a bible. In fact not alot of people finish it because it puts some to sleep. If you are up to the challenge of reading it, here are some websites that will help you IMMENSELY
:tolkienreadalong.tumblr.com/-This is the Silmarillion read-a-long blog with will help.
askmiddlearth.tumblr.com/-This person is very knowledgeable in the Silmarillion and is very kind and will answer any question to the best of his/her abilities
      tolkiengateway.net/wiki/The_Silmarillion
      lotr.wikia.com/wiki/The_Silmarillion
      archive.org/details/J.r.r.Tolkien-TheSilmarillion-
Now you don't HAVE to read the entire book, you could every easily skip to a certain part or you could just read summaries from the site that i have listed, though you would have to find them. It is really up to you just be aware the Simarillion has defeated many readers, so take it chapter by chapter and take a break from reading it so you won't get burn out. Enjoy and good luck!

Do not start with The Silmarillion. It's the most complex Tolkien's book and unneeded to understand The Hobbit events.
Start with The Hobbit and then The Lord of Rings. If you like and want to know more about Arda, go and read The Silmarillion.

Thadan Cobain if this is still relevant I'd say read the hobbit and Lord of the Rings to get used to Tolkien's style of writing then read the Silmarillion
