MY HOMETOWN THROUGH THE YEARS

- The origin of this town, Sungai Ujong, came into existence with the discovery of tin ore in the 1870s in a nearby area called Rasah, which saw an influx of Arab, Indonesian and Chinese immigrants to work on the mines and trade there. Most of the local Malays were farmers.
The town flourished not only as a mining area but also as a business centre. The Linggi River served as the sole outlet to ferry tin and supplies in and out of the town.
Subsequently, the name was changed to Seremban during the British colonial rule.
The new settlement took on an urban form with the construction of roads, railway lines, public buildings such as a post office, markets, schools and commercial buildings. Many of these early colonial buildings remain in use today although they have been overshadowed by the new physical development.
Seremban was granted city status on 1st January 2020. The new title of ‘City’ for Seremban signals that this capital of Negeri Sembilan has arrived in terms of its urban development and the standard of its public infrastructure and amenities.
In the heart of Seremban, where time seemed to dance to the gentle rhythm of nostalgic melodies, memories of a bygone era beckon like whispers from the past. As I gaze upon the images of old Seremban town, bathed in the sepia tones of memory, I am transported back to a time when life unfolded with the unhurried grace of a waltz.
Each image, a portal to cherished moments etched in the fabric of my being, weaves a tapestry of nostalgia that envelops me in a warm embrace. The sights and sounds of old Seremban come flooding back, painting vivid scenes of days gone by - bustling streets alive with the chatter of vendors, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting from quaint kopitiams, and the laughter of children echoing through the air.
In those simpler times, every corner held a story, every alleyway a secret waiting to be discovered. From the iconic clock tower that stood as a silent sentinel over the town square, to the fragrant stalls of the pasar malam, each landmark holds a piece of my childhood, a fragment of who I am.
But it is not just the sights and sounds that stir my soul; it is the palpable sense of community, of kinship forged in the crucible of everyday life. In the 1960s, Seremban was more than just a town - it was a tapestry of lives intertwined, each thread contributing to the rich tapestry of our shared history.
As I reflect on those halcyon days, I am filled with a longing to revisit the past, to walk once more through the streets of old Seremban and relive the moments that shaped me. But even as I yearn for the comfort of familiar faces and familiar places, I am reminded that the past is but a memory, a fleeting glimpse of what once was.
Yet, amidst the chaos of the present, I find solace in the knowledge that the memories we hold dear will forever be ours to cherish. And so, as I bid farewell to the images of old Seremban, I carry with me not just a sense of longing, but a profound gratitude for the moments that have shaped me, and the town that will always be home. Seremban, oh Seremban - your memory lives on in the echoes of my heart.

Used to play Hockey for KGV at NS Padang. NS Finals against SPI in 1974 and 1975. As I grew older, became NS hockey umpire from 1989 to 1991. Good old days. Cheers

Yes! We were school mates up to 1969 before I left to study at TI KL.
I m his older sister also your sister Lai Peng 's school mate. Yat San was our eldest brother 's classmate. TB/ Edward n I
