Tennelle: "It's kinda like a Tootsie Roll." Me: "But that's tasty." Shawn: "Ehhhh I kinda like it." Tennelle: "Okay, kinda like Candy Corn." Me: *slowly slides cup full of triangles of pure sugar beneath desk* "Yeah, yeah, too sugary to bear, just like candy corn."
I ADORED that mickey mouse and the beanstalk short as a kid. I would usually skip over the bear one after the first couple watches. But I do agree, there is NOTHING special about this film lol Its just.. moving pictures lol
(Also I'm excited to see your reactions to melody time, again, I adored a lot of the shorts in that, even though, one is a little controversial in todays standards)
Man I used to love this one as a kid! This movie basically was just like a purely animated package films for the thing for kids. Didn't really have much of a story I felt like but it was just something fun to watch you know when you were a kid and you didn't have anything else. Kind of like a hodgepodge of a bunch of different stuff I feel like. Wasn't exactly the best but it was decent
The ventriloquist was Edgar Bergen. His banter with the puppets was an EXTREMELY popular radio series in the 30's and 40's. The downside of his act being on the radio was that he got too used to nobody seeing him perforn actual ventriloquism, he could just talk like normal. Then when TV came along and his act was now shot on camera, he realized he had become a terrible ventriloquist cause he got so used to just moving his mouth like normal for his radio performances. Give the man brownie points for self awareness.
I know I'm like 5 years late and you guys probably won't read this but to answer your question in the description I just think this movies is dumb fun (NOT THE BINGO PART THAT PART IS GARBAGE) but all the mortimer snerd and mickey abd the beanstalk stuff it's just so bizzare and crazy that it just loops around and becomed entertaining (also helped by the fact that the mickey short is actually good). But litteraly imagine it jimminy cricket litteraly hops into a house were a grown man with a purse in his head is talking to a little girl with 2 weird puppets is just such a bizzare concept that makes it way more interesting like something like Make mine music or melody time. Also I kinda like the snarly and funny commentary by the puppets it got a few laughs out of me. I didn't grow up with this movie so I'm 100% unbiased
The Mickey and the Beanstalk edited version is on Netflix now, as well as a ton of other older shorts from the package films and I believe stand alone ones as well.
Ahh yes, one of Disney's most interesting package features (production- and history-wise) they made in the post-war years. I remember watching this on VHS a few years ago, and it has its moments but Ichabod and Mr. Toad in my opinion is the better package feature. Edgar Bergen and his two dummies Charlie and Mortimer were popular during the 40s and Mr. Bergen had a nice charm whenever telling Luana Patten (one of Disney's child stars at the time) what was happening in the Mickey and the Beanstalk segment. Dinah Shore has a beautiful singing voice, and it was nice of Cliff Edwards to come back and voice Jiminy Cricket again, but the film itself is indeed a mixed bag. Great video! ^.^
I like to rewatch this film because it has some iconic moments and characters like Jiminy Cricket, Mickey Mouse and Willy The Giant. I completely understand how it’s your least favorite film, though, but I believe it had incredible potential. Originally this movie was going to be two movies: Mickey and The Beanstalk and Bongo, but because of the war and financial issues they pushed it together, leaving it undeveloped and rushed. Similarly how The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow and The Wind In The Willows became The Adventures Of Ichabod and Mr Toad. Mickey and The Beanstalk would have featured Jiminy Cricket and Mickey was going to receive the magic beans from Honest John and Gideon from Pinocchio, it could have been the best crossover movie ever if it was expanded. Bongo was going to be a spin-off of Dumbo. Most of the movie would have taken place in the wild, anyway, so it would have been a nice nod without disrupting the universe. The original novel of The Wind In The Willows is most often on the shelf next to Winnie The Pooh and a full length film could have been just as successful. The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow would have been something entirely different from Disney’s usual kind of stories, but could also have worked really well! These films have so many wasted opportunities. 😪😕
Yes, the conning business with Honest John and Gideon would have been an effective storytelling and crossover bit-although the joke would have been an ironic backfire on the fox & cat- the beans are magic as it turns out!
I'm nostalgic for this film. I havent seen it in a while but I remember being entertained, but a little bored by Bongo. For 2 year old me, who never saw Pinnocchio, Jiminy Cricket was from this movie and I loved him. I remember Mickey and the Beanstalk a lot more fondly than Bongo... And I was honestly super freaked out by the Hand Puppet and Charlie (The puppet with the monocle). I had a nightmare when I was like 3 in which Charlie held me hostage. Also, you probably know this by now, but the ventriloquist was Edgar Bergen. He was a super famous ventriloquist at the time. And had his own show on the radio (I dont get it though, it doesnt show off anything except voices...) and at this point in his career, he had been a ventriloquist for more than 20 years... But the best part of this movie for me as a child was the documentary at the end. My VHS had a short documentary afterwards about the making of and I think it had some bits of Walt recording Mickey's voice and Leonard Maltin was in there somewhere... I know this movie had this but I might be mixing it up with the documentary about Bambi after that VHS... But see if you can check those out if you havent seen them
Right after this I went back and watched the documentary again. They were planning on making both of these actual standalone feature films and that baffles me. Do you remember that deleted scene where Minnie gives Mickey the beans and they're a family heirloom? And that Bongo was going to be a spinoff/sequel to Dumbo?
Okay I swear to god I never saw this movie, the ventriloquist and the bear are completely unfamiliar, but i definitely saw the mickey and the beanstalk short without narration growing up. like i remember that one clearly. it must have been repackaged later, right??
Nah. I've watched this movie for years and it is still a childhood favorite of mine. Nowadays, I have found some interesting trivia out. The scene where Jiminy drinks the live-action cocktail is really interesting to me.
Oh goooood this one. Ok this is by far the worst of all the damn disney films. I liked song of the south, I liked Saludos Amigos, but this one? The damn between stuff always drove me nuts. Thankfully the other two package films are much better than this one. I love the Bongo short, the songs were fun to me and have a nostalgic link for me, but mickey and the beanstalk is better alone when they finally just put it on vhs in the 90s then called it good. It doesn't help that I hate Jiminy Cricket, I hate how happy he is it's so one note and bad. He has no personality and I have always felt this way. Also I like candy corn XD. So as I'm thinking about Bongo, I think the way it was written they brought the singer in and said "what do you want to do? What do you like?" "Bears and a love story!" Ok bears beat each other up to say they love each other. The singer lady did a good job with her thing, if they just released this on its own I think people would be happy. Bongo is the only one of the two who should have the narration, the bears don't talk, the narrator is telling the story and only talks when she needs to. She sings really well and I enjoy her parts. She does sing a good amount of "Say it with a slap." So ya know. AND OH MY GOD THE PEDOPHILE PUPPET MAN!!!! So god damn creepy. Ok so this was boring as a kid but when I watched this about half a year ago just to refresh my mind. The man is bad at ventriloquism and he's a god damn pedo inviting one girl over to his house to go to happy valley with his puppets. What a fucking creeper. I liked a couple jokes but other than the two jokes that made me smile and exhale a bit this whole thing was baaaaad. The live action shit is baaaaad. God help us all with that nonsense. On the note of Mickey as a character, I think this is the last time they made him a clever mischievous guy rather than a happy go lucky fella. I miss when Mickey did things. I hated Willy the Giant as a kid but when I went back and watched this movie I really enjoyed him, his doofy character made me smile more than he did when I was young. No shame here, he's a lovable buffoon. I like him more than Dopey. You are going to be very happy with Melody Time. Lots of great shorts in there, one of them makes me weep like a child and it's in the middle of the damn thing. Melody time, besides Three Caballeros, is my favorite Package Film. All of the shorts are fantastic and that's not nostalgia clouding my mind. As far as Fun and Fancy Free goes, never liked it as a kid, watched Mickey and the Beanstalk on the separate tape most of the time, as an adult I lean toward liking Bongo for the cute story, the slapping song, and watching bears drawn by disney that weren't originally a human. Seriously what other bears are there by disney? Yeah. This film is their version of a Pop culture movie and it just proves that time isn't kind to pop culture. It kills movies. I'm sure this was just disney's money trap of the time and they needed it to keep working on their next full length movie I'm sure. I treat it at face value, unpleasant but sometimes I can enjoy the movie.
I actually love FUN AND FANCY FREE I don't understand how anyone can hate Bongo. I understand that's what most people hate about FUN AND FANCY FREE I love the story of Bongo! He's adorable Understandably Mickey and The Beanstalk overshadows Bongo. Yes Bongo has a slight to moderate pacing problem especially where the songs are concerned I also don't understand how people don't like Jimminy Cricket Edgar Bergen, and his ventriloquist dummies Charlie McCarthy, and Mortimer Snerd I personally think FUN AND FREE is better than the solo Mickey and The Beanstalk segment I have on VHS because that's edited
Ahhh damn I used to LOVE Bongo as a kid. Idk maybe I just liked bears....? But yeah you're right when you think of Bongo you think of the slapping song XD
More like getting churned out as an attempt to reboot Disney's revenue stream after the US government left them alone after WWII in order to go back to making feature-length animated films once again
When I was a kid, I utterly enjoyed this film and will probably still watch it for nostalgic reasons. However, I do agree the narration ruins the shorts and the first one was very weird. Regardless, this review of Fun and Fancy Free was very entertaining, and I look forward to seeing more reviews from you guys in the future.
This just felt...empty! The only thing that makes this even remotely worth watching is the Mickey segment, and yes, there is a version that is exclusive on its own that replaces the creepy ventriloquist with Ludwig Von Drake and a bug named Herman. I grew up with this version and watched it all the time as a kid.
I still have The solo segment of Mickey and The Beanstalk with Ludwig Von Drake as the narrator on VHS. I loved Mickey and The Beanstalk growing up as a kid but in 2015 Google Play now Google TV released Fun And Fancy Free to their streaming platform and I watched it and I actually love watching Fun And Fancy Free I love the story of Bongo and I love Edgar Bergen's narration of Mickey and The Beanstalk over Ludwig Von Drake's I love Charlie McCarthy's riffs on Bergen's narration it's HILARIOUS and Mortimer Snerd is funny I think Edgar Bergen is The Jeff Dunhamof his Era. To be honest I don't like watching my Mickey and The Beanstalk VHS anymore because of all the edits Like the Giant Dragonfly sequence diveboming Mickey, Donald, and Goofy after Donald pretends to shoot it down In the VHS they edit it down and the jello trampoline sequence with Goofy
I admit I have a bit of soft spot for this movie since I had the VHS as a kid but it's definitely the weakest of the package films. I remember thinking the bears were really cute and really enjoying the Beanstalk short but I always hated the live action segments; I'd just fast forward through them most of the time.
This was my favorite of the package films when I was a kid. I have no clue why. I have no excuse. I distinctly don't like this film as much now as I did when I was a kid.
Shit, i thought that puppet thing was part of one of those pledge drives, i had no idea it was a segment. Also, why does American animation in particular have constant talking/sounds/ narration? Oftentimes when dubbing a foreign film they'll add narration, as though they think we're too slow to follow without it. Pretty sure Pixar proved all that wrong.
funny ive always loved fun and fancy free and the stories within it since I was a child I'm most likely the only one that actually enjoys it xD sadly cant watch it anymore I only had it on tape and I don't have a tape player anymore ;-;
The bongo story has a relaxed pace yes. But your gripes about the animation... are you watching a different movie? I cannot see what you are talking about at all.
Whoever approved this film must have had some interesting ideas on how romantic relationships should look like. I mean, one part teaches kids physical abuse is the best way to show feelings, other shows that it is okay for an adult to make moves on a child..
This one always struck me as, "this is what the interns were working on while the veterans worked on Cinderella."
ohHHH NOOO THAT LIVE ACTION SECTION... I could have gone my whole life without seeing that, YIKES
Now you have, and your eyes will never be clean again...
Tennelle: "It's kinda like a Tootsie Roll."
Me: "But that's tasty."
Shawn: "Ehhhh I kinda like it."
Tennelle: "Okay, kinda like Candy Corn."

I ADORED that mickey mouse and the beanstalk short as a kid. I would usually skip over the bear one after the first couple watches. But I do agree, there is NOTHING special about this film lol Its just.. moving pictures lol
That shot of slicing the bread and bean was probably my favorite thing I don't know why lol
(Also I'm excited to see your reactions to melody time, again, I adored a lot of the shorts in that, even though, one is a little controversial in todays standards)

MMMM The Adventures of TinTin, best series ever, swear. even the Spielberg movie owns it well, it's awesome.
Your thumbnails speak volumes about your film reviews.

Katie Lewis AHAAH exactly!

The unrealized Disney cinematic universe that started in the 1940's is my Roman Empire

Literally squealed when Shaun referenced Hamilton lol
Gay used to mean something else... Also that Bongo the Bear short. “when you say “I love you” bears like to say it with a slap.”
Actually this is one of my favorites
I do, I always watched this when I was younger. And I thought it was quite charming, for its era and lifestyle.
I'M REWATCHING THIS AFTER THE TINTIN REVIEW IN 1969 OMG
Wait. Omg I remember this! I think we had this on our shelf too! I completely forgot! I recognize that bear with the hats!
I think the Mickey and the Beanstalk Short was packaged separately later and sold as a movie. I am pretty sure my Grandma had a VHS tape of it.....
Okay I swear to god I never saw this movie, the ventriloquist and the bear are completely unfamiliar, but i definitely saw the mickey and the beanstalk short without narration growing up. like i remember that one clearly. it must have been repackaged later, right??

I miss this sort movies

28:37 The sheep are from Ferdinand also, I think.
I know that I've seem the Mickey and the beanstalk part, but I've never seen the liveaction (thank god) or the one with the bears

i'm no animation connoisseur, but this DOESN'T look like a Disney movie, which definitely says something about the animation direction...
I have the Mickey and the Beanstalk on vhs somewhere but I have never seen the bear short and never knew it existed?
Also if you like Jiminy Cricket. He’s there too.
OMG! I vaugely remember the second short in this and I did not remember how creepy it was, yikes.
I watched the mickey short as a very young kid, and the only thing I remember is the bread scene
nice

Horrid and mindlessly sugary
I have a hint for you watch the special fetures this movie is funny
that Hamilton reference though..
You and LZRD WZRD shod mack a video to gethr
I've.. never seen this...
(Also this video isnt in your Animation Pilgrimage playlist)
I have a copy of the crab with the golden claws. It’s not to hard to find? It’s at my local dvd stores?
I wonder if there's a way for someone to send them a copy?
I would have offered to send it to them except for the fact I live in Australia and the copy is so beaten up it doesn’t”t look that good.
I thought it was ok i gess
Oh god... I remember this movie. I kinda hated it... I was really young when I watched it. Flipping hated it!
Why did you need subtitles? owo
ziggy stardust1 most likely it's either in a different language, or it's silent (idk that's just what came to mind)
it's likely either in french, dutch, or german (it's a belgian film/property)
Tin Tin Is Belgian French
This is the worst Disney film ever.. All thanks to that ventriloquist.
