- From Providence, Rhode Island. I didn't realize he performed this song anywhere besides MSG in 1978, but he did do it quite a few times between 78-79 (then it died). Too bad they never really gave Half a Mile Away a go. 52nd Street would've been a cool closer, but I have no proof that it was ever performed.
The most underrated track in his catalogue...wish he'd bring this one back live. ❤
Glad others think so! It's my favorite song of his, and probably one of my all-times in general. =)
It's funny how I never enjoyed this song, but after some time of persistence listening to it, it turned out to be one of my favorite Billy Joel's songs
hahaha
I am going through this right now
I wish he was still young today. Even at 73 he’s amazing!
Yeah, he definitely sounds great but I would’ve loved to see him in his prime. Used to be a rock band jamming, now it’s a stage show of his career. I miss his old band, too.
@@sithlordmikeyp yes! I wish I was alive way back in the early 70s so I could go to more concerts. It’s sad he’s turning 74 tomorrow May 9th. Today is May 8th.
He’s getting up there!
I know, it sucks seeing our heroes get old. He seems to be in pretty good condition minus his eye and obviously the double hip replacement he had like a decade or so ago. I’m sure he’s got another 5-10 years in him. I don’t think he’ll ever fully give it up until he’s dead, so maybe another 25 or so
@@sithlordmikeyp I think his eyes were watery because he was getting over a cold. I dont know for sure. He said he will keep performing at MSG as long as he can do it and as long as fans want him there. Thats what iv heard.
I love the lesser known songs from 52nd Street. Half A Mile Away is my favorite from the entire album and Rosalinda's Eyes is probably number 2. I'm a huge fan of all of his songs but I like some of the B sides and rarities even more than the hits. Thanks for posting this one
Yeah, dude I agree. Throughout Billy Joel's entire repertoire it's almost always his rare songs that I enjoy the most. I'm not too keen on the big band Chicago sound of Half a Mile Away but the song itself is pretty badass.
To name a couple that I enjoy quite a bit (in no particular order)
Ain't No Crime
Great Suburban Showdown
Weekend Song
52nd Street
Close to the Borderline
She's Right on Time
A Room of Our Own
But of course a lot of his Top 40 songs are still Top 40 for a reason.
Billy Joel turned 74 today 5/9/23
I hope he does this song again. A few days ago he did all for Leyna. I know he hasn’t done that one in awhile. Hopefully he will continue to do rare songs
He’s done Leyna much more often than Rosalinda. That one hasn’t been done in full since 79 (maybe 80), but off the top my head I know he did Leyna at Bonaroo 2015.
I wanna hear him pull out Travelin Prayer, Ain’t No Crime, Worse Comes to Worst, If I Only, Somewhere Along the Line, Streetlife, Great Suburban, Roberta, Last of the Big Time, Weekend Song, Get it Right the First time, Rosalinda’s Eyes, 52nd Street, C’etait Toi (like that’ll ever happen), Close to the Borderline, and I’ll stop it there at Glass Houses. There’s more I’d like to hear but it’s mostly the early rarities I’m interested in.
…though Temptation, State of Grace, and When In Rome would also be neat.
@@sithlordmikeyp I really want him to do the Mexican, that is one of my favorites.
That would be awesome if he did it again. Which he unfortunately didn’t for decades, apparently (only a few 1978-1979 recordings like this one as far as I know).
But « the Lords of 52nd Street » play this song regularly.
Half a mile away was performed... Ages later. Still amazing.
nah, man. if it aint liberty, doug, richie, and javors, i'm not interested.
That was a good show
I haven’t heard the full thing. I hate that by 78-79, he’s only playing the super famous hits from each album. Maybe I’ll give the full thing a listen, his voice is in great condition.
