This video shows football the way it is suppose to be played. The NFL used to be rough and tough MEN played it. It was a collision sport!!!! They knocked each other into next week. It was brutal and only the strong survived! Mel was not the biggest, nor the fastest. BUT he was damn good!!!! Pay attention to his accomplishments at 4:53. Mel mugged the receiver. He had great vision and anticipation. He was a ball hawk! He has several super bowl rings -- 4 total....... He was part of some of the best teams ever!!! A true treat to watch!!!!
Mel Blount HOF Cornerback 3rd round draft pick by Pittsburgh in 1970 1975 DPOY (led the league in INT) 5x Pro Bowl 6x All Pro 70s All Decade Team 80s All Decade Team 75th Anniversary Team (1995) 4x SB Champion Intercepted 57 passes in his fourteen year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers
A lot of these tackles are targeting and unnecessary roughness plays. That wouldn’t fly today. Deion would do way better in todays game then Blount would
The Steelers have an insane history with defensive players Jack Butler, Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, Mel Blount, Donnie Shell, James Harrison, Troy Polamalu, and more
Blount listed at 205 Lambert at 220 but they looked about the same size on the field. They both probably played at 210. Lambert was skinny for a linebacker and I suspect his weight was rounded up. His legs look like toothpicks and Blount was the perfect physical specimen
Funny thing is that the Mel Blount rule was one of the primary rule changes that further opened the passing game up. Blount’s receiver teammates benefited greatly from that rule change 😂
He did have a heck of a career when he played in the NFL and he was very dominant player of his time. Back in the day, the NFL produced a lot of players coming outta HBCU schools at that particular time
Mel Blount, Arneas Williams, Harold Carmicheal ( NFL Hall of Famers),Avery Johnson ( NBA Player - Coach champion ), Lou Brock ( MLB Hall of Famer), U.S. Olympic Gold Medalists Willie Davenport and Rodney Milburn , Isaih Butch Robinson ( NFL Defensive Rookie of The Year) : They are started out as college Athletes via Southern University Jaguars - Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
One name Id add is Rich "Tombstone" Jackson. He called his head slap the "Halo Spinner." He was undrafted. If you just started a fantasy defensive team exclusively from HBCU schools, you could start Deacon Jones and Tombstone at DE and thrown in Willie Lanier and Mel Blount, and Buck Buchanan for starters.
I don't like the debate between he and Deion, apples to oranges, but I will agree he was the best shutdown corner ever. It's hard to truly understand his greatness because the passing rules at the time allowed for contact after 5 yds. He was so much bigger and stronger than most receivers of his day and the qb's he faced couldn't hold a candle to the qb's in the 90s. Also you have to take into account Chuck Knoll and the Steel Curtain, the combination of the two made it easy for 47, but when you watch him on film it's easy to see why there is a debate. Im my estimation, Deion deserves the nod he had an inferior coach in Glanville, and teams flat out would not throw to his side, plus he was faster.
I would love to see Mel Blount against Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, etc. Just like I wanna see Deion Sanders against the speedster Cliff Branch
I'm a Steelers fan and If I was a wr. In the 70s on a opposing team I would be scared out of my mind if Mel Blount was coming at me for a tackle im guessing 70s offense on other NFL teams still have nightmares of Mel Blount and Mean Joe Greene Jack lambert jack hamm Dwight white Donnie shell
Keep in mind boys & girls they changed the rules for defensive backs because of Mel....... The NFL was fun to watch in this time period... They HIT each other --- BOOM. Mel was a ball-hawk!!!
3 River Stadium field looked like they played on cement 👀 When CBs are mentioned i wonder why hes rarely brought up. There's only 3 or 4 corners that had that " ½ side of tha field" effect and 2 were frm Aliquippa western Pa 😎
As a person who played football my entire life especially at DB.. you can tell the psychological effect he had on the ppl he covered. Look how they don’t even go for the ball when he is around even shows some that are more worried about Blount and hitting him back than catching the ball. That’s what I love about competition, you don’t have to be the best at everything, sometimes if you just have that dog in you it’ll scare weaker men and prevent them from performing at their highest level. All while you eat em for breakfast. 💯✊🏽🦾
If you look at his accolades and the plays he made he looks eerily similar to Jalen Ramsey. Both violent, physical corners that love to press and don’t have the best ball skills but will break up or knock out passes and get opportunistic interceptions. Both 2 time All Pros and 5 time pro bowlers(currently). Jalen is the Modern Mel Blount
How many Super Bowl Rings does Coach Prime have ? Still Waiting Shay Shay and Steven A. Numbers and Mathematics don't lie. Math is an exact science. Mel Blount undoubtedly the g.o.a.t. @the N.F.L. Cornerback Position. Coach Prime Yes, Undoubtedly The Greatest All Around Pound for Pound Athlete of All Time. Albeit, at this specific position : Blount Rule !
Perhaps the greatest man to man corner to ever play. He was brutal, he had great vison, and nobody could stop him, not even the mel blount rule
One of the Greatest Defensive Back's ever top 5 Easily

FACTS, you can't run that bull crap on us old timers we know how a player should play the game
One Bad Bald headed dude.... That wears a cowboy hat. #47. Great video and clips. Good job.
He’s my favorite player. Never watched him cuz I’m too young but his highlights are just incredible
Don't you wish you could've seen them play. Like a live game not knowing the result. Would've been insane
Mel Blount one of the greatest cornerbacks ever to play pro football
The greatest.
BEST CB Ever
The father of the modern day big DB
And one of the greatest football players post-career. Started a ranch where he taught kids from the inner city to be real men.
1) Mel Blount Rule (aka) too tough
2) Hines Ward Rule (aka) too tough
3) James Harrison rule (aka) too tough
Gosh, I'm sensing a trend...
HPB
The league and its bias against the Steelers and their toughest players
Yeah elite black ppl cause rule changes
Don't forget Troy polamalu and the extreme toughness of Big Ben throwing people off and Terry Bradshaw did the exact same thing
Come on though. It made sense to enforce those rule changes. These guys were completely blind siding people with insane force.
hp I would of loved to see Mel Blount cover Hines Ward. That would of been a hell of a Show
Mel Blount HOF Cornerback

A complete player. Unlike Deon sanders who was an incredible talent. Deon didnt tackle. Blount did it all.
Deion
@@SouthFloridaManlmao.....yes people do forget the I in Sanders' name.
Wah

true, the rules are different today

This man the great Mel Blount is my #2 corner on my official NFL All Time Team, he is my RCB
One of the greatest Steelers of all time a living legend
Greatest football player I ever saw.....
OMG he should have been a no brainer selection for the all '70s decade squad.
Zionism is Real !
The GREATEST cornerback of the modern NFL era. NOBODY was more fierce, or dominant. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves IMO.
Another piece of possibly the greatest defense ever
Never saw a cooler NFL player.
Mel ,Jack, Jack , Joe , Donnie hardest hitters in the nfl EVER, PERIOD!!
Jack Tatum was the hardest hitter i ever seen. But the players mention are much better all around players. All HOF players you mentioned
Mel, James Harrison, joe ,jack ,jack
The Steelers have an insane history with defensive players Jack Butler, Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Jack Lambert, Mel Blount, Donnie Shell, James Harrison, Troy Polamalu, and more
Left off a few Chicago Bears ...
Ernie Holmes ,Mike Wagner ,Glenn Edwards , Dwight White ,JT Thomas ,were also ferocious hitters on that legendary defense .
Lambert played middle LB at 6'4.200 lbs, Blount played DB at 6'4,220 and he hit and covered like a mack track, the GOAT
Jack Lambert is 6'5
@@brodyburkett3740 Google his name, I read 6'4, nice try
and had sub 4.4 speed to go with that

It's just crazy how the STeelers had two of the best CB ever with Blount and Woodson.
Funny thing is that the Mel Blount rule was one of the primary rule changes that further opened the passing game up. Blount’s receiver teammates benefited greatly from that rule change 😂
Its crazy how one dude makes people do rules against him because he is so good
My all time CB’s: #1 LCB Herb Adderley, #2 RCB Mel Blount, #3 CB/nickel RCB Mel Renfro, #4 CB/dime LCB Darrell Green
Mel Blount is the greatest cornerbacks in the history of the game. He came outta of Tennessee State, so he was part of the Steelers dynasty.
Corrections :
Mel Blount stared at Southern University which produced two other NFL Hall of Famers in Harold Carmichael and Arneas Williams.
@@professorx8549I’m sorry about that. I was wrong! He went to Southern University and I didn’t know that

The best to ever do it!
I feel bad for the Oilers. When they were awesome the Steelers were...well super.
He was huge for a Corner back…6-3 215 pds damnnn 💪🏾💪🏾
Mel Blount is going crazy
Ran like a gazelle, and so strong. Solid hitter. Mel meant business.

Deion was more talented. But Blount was a more complete player. Tackled and hit. Deion was the best cover corner ever but he didnt like tackling.
Let's not forget about ROD WOODSON. He was Mel and Deion wrapped up in one person.
The real deal.
I'm starting as my 2 corners mel blount and dick night train lane.
Can't go wrong with that back field.

The NFL had to change the rules because of his coverage to the 5-yard contact rule. He adapted and kicked butt
AND he could play the run............. Hall of Fame for sure! (1987)
Steelers all the way! First in last out! Everyone eats first while alphas eat last! Stay in the fight and never quit!
Mean Joe Greene Started The Greatest Dynasty In Football But Wow Was #47 The Top Corner On The Field When He Played .

No current Steelers wear # 12, 32, 75 or 47. They'd better not even ask 😡
