The Apex of modern music, which had no place to go but down thereafter. RIP modern music
Why so much pessimism? Seems to be a quite narrow minded view on "music". A lot wouldn't call this music as they can't handle the disharmonics ^^. That doesn't make them wrong and us right. Different people find pleasure in different things. You don't have to like it, just accept that other people have a different taste. GG always was a quite niche genre. If you like it, it doesn't make you superior or others inferior. Yes all members of GG are / were extremely talented compared to many other "main stream" musicians even back then. Though that would be like claiming scientists of today are all crap and are no match to Einstein or Hawking. However that's not true either. Einstein was brilliant but also just lived at the right time and gathered and combined things others have done before him.
Back in the days there was much more room for absolutely new things and innovation. Nowadays it's extremely hard to actually invent something groundbreaking new. No matter what you compose it probably sounds like something that came before and people would call "plagiarism!!!".
I can enjoy a wide variety of musical genres. Some more than others and some depend on the mood. I inherited this DVD and a huge chunk of my taste in music from my dad (passed 2007). Though there's so much more out there. Today it's just way harder to find due to the plethora of artists and music on the market. I do agree that even the diversity of the main stream music (that music that sells most) has degraded. However that doesn't mean there's no new "niche stuff" out there. It's just harder to find.

@@Bunny99sI couldn’t have written it better myself.
@@Bunny99sThere is nothing like this today.
@@lenpey Try something like "Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere". As I said it's just harder to find as there is so much more music produced nowadays.
Steven Wilson is also considered quite progressive and he actually remixed several GG albums in 2014+. Though his style isn't really GG but different. Porcupine Tree also was a great band.
Still they brighten my days for over 30 years. Pure soulfood. Thank you Giants!
I just got into these dudes two weeks ago, and I'm both in awe and regret, as I've always heard of them but never listened, until two weeks ago.
I've been a fan since 1973.
Lucky you, who will not die without this marvellous musical experience !
The BEST progresiva rock band of all the times
🎉
Love these dudes! Its 2024 and im 63 and SO appreciate them! I own all their vinyl and CDs and even possessed all of their albums on cassette back in their beginning
That's what we call talented musicians. Nothing equals Gentle Giant.

A day without Gentle Giant is a shit day.
So proud this is a Belgian production! What a document to this awesome band of musical geniuses !
freaking great. first time i heard cogs in 74 it blew my head off. now, i play it for my music students, and like to watch their faces when i play this and knots. now they all have vinyl versions. yay.
You sound like a good teacher. Keep it up. 👍
Good times were those, when we had Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and Yes on the top of their games !
I share videos of 70s bands to the younguns to point out that acts could make music without computers, costumes or dance routines.
I mean... one of my son's favorite acts back in high school was just a guy with a laptop... Forgot the act... It wasn't Deadmau5, although most of his act is also just him with banks of computers and awesome props.
@@andywellsglobaldominationNice ! I hope they will enjoy and expand their musical horizons !
The Giant still Alive 2023..!!!
Got a standing ovation and charged with indecent exposure all at once!
I read a Zappa interview where he mentions Gentle Giant as interesting music. This was early '70s like '72-73. Ultimate compliment in my book.
With this in mind, it's easy to discern similarities: Gary Green can pull off some Zappa-esque sounding wha wha solo's!
John weathers was a true joy to watch.
Have been listening to this band for over 50 years and they still amaze me.👍👍
I was just 15, a girl riding a skateboard in Santa Monica, Ca. People thought that was trippy...just check out these guys!!!!! So gifted, and amazimg in concert! FUCK YEAH!
By the way, 15 yrs old then watching them in concert...I'm now 64 and NO I don't ride my retired skateboard!😅
Me too. Can't shake them off. Kerry Minnear creates tunes that have stayed with me for years and the closest (equivalent?) I can think of is Alan Gowan.
Incredibly underrated but WE know
In a glass house ,what a theme!
I saw and loved GG since the mid 70s...nothing like them live! Have you ever tried to introduce someone to them and they just couldn't stand listening to them? People have gotten almost spastic about them...' turn it off! It's giving me a headache!'. I can't even get them to appreciate the technical abilities of these incredible guys. I want to understand people who feel.that way, since I feel like that about jazz music, but these guys are so far beyond any one discipline of music. I SO want to share the joy I feel watching and listening to them and am saddened when people just don't get it even enough to see their worth. Maybe you had to be there at the time. When someone says they don't like them, I just realize I love them enough for them and many more. Bless the passing of the wonderful Ray Shulman. All my love to GG fans.
Saw them at the Gree Trade Hall in Manchester around 1974 best gig ever, and I've seen lot's of gigs
Rest now Ray. 🌹
Im still as awestruck everytime I listen to them as I was at the first encounter in 1975 at the tender age of sixteen. The only other musician who does this to me is Johann Sebastian Bach.
I Agree. GG stand for a class of it's own. Saw them twice in mid 70s.
A thing that make me glad is that I've seen many young people at RUclips have taken up GG songs and done it fantasticly good. I believe there will be a future for GG's musik.
this was the climax of modern music!!!
What other band features a bunch of guys all playing a recorder at the same time. Just incredible
Freakin Gary and Ray during the acoustic bit in Knots….. it’s like acrobatic guitar playing.
Impressive how they twisted bluesy roots, and mixed it with folk and contemporary stuff. I have never felt swing like that. Truly amazing, and wow... lots of rehearsal
RIP Ray X.
Greatest display of musicianship I’ve ever seen 7-4-1976 Rochester, NY
This band was truly astonishing
Great post - new to me. Saw them live in 76.
Progressive Rock can be both Gentle, and Giant...when it comes from real Masters !...
The epitome of progressive rock! Giants!
Was lucky enough to have seen them 3x in 77-78 . Fabulous live performances . Highly recommend the Playing the Fool live double lp .
The intro to this DVD is just amazing. Wish they did a full song with that theme 😁
Ray has easily become one of my favorite prog bassists ever.
Super grupo de gran calidad interpretativa y de composición compleja basada en la armonía antigua medio evo renacimiento barroco clasico romantico contemporaneo y moderno .en el top del rock progresivo y de cualquier musica .
Heroes !
Gary Green playing a Fender Telecaster on The Runaway. A good choice of axes.
Loving Kerry Minnear's keyboard work on this tune.
GG were one of the best prog outfits of the 70's.
Christopher Nupen directed the shooting of this footage. During the age of VHS, Nupen did a wonderful documentary on the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, a true genius of classical music. His 7 symphonies are among the finest ever composed. Not to mention countless other gems. Nupen made several other documentary/performance films of equal quality. I guess he liked Gentle Giant too. Very cool!
Toujours présent dans mes moments d'écoute de ''Grande Musique''.Imbattable!
Words can,t express this band except maybe magic
it doesn't get any better than this
I totally agree.
Prog rock describing these guys is totally inadequate in my opinion. Sure. Complex. They rock they funk it’s fun.
I ‘d play Power and the Glory right now but out of consideration for my neighbors I’ll wait till 6am!
that intro song
Veramente Grandi!!!
ABSOLUTELY THE BEST EVER.
Gentle Giant is the best band that ever lived!
There was and will never be such musicality and joy of playing again!
Each individual musician essentially replaces an entire band on their own!
Ray Shulman (bass violin, trumpet, etc.) and Kerry Minear (keyboards, cello, vibraphone, etc.) particularly stand out!
But the other members also show what they can do!
My special tip: Funny Ways!
And don't forget the great live album
"Playing the Fool"!
Thank you very much for uploading this concert in Germany from 1975! Unfortunately I've never seen it even though I've known and loved the band since then❤
RIP Ray Shulman.
They are part of the the great collective called 70s progressive rock. Each band in this time period. All sounded different to each other but yet all progressive rock. Me.... I want to go back to the 70s & just stay there
After a minute and a half I break down in the laughter of happiness! This is so sick it makes me healthy! :D
Adding this to my "watch later" list!
GENTLE GIANT ARE AN ABOVE AVERAGE GROUP NOT YOURE NORMAL TOP OF THE POPS ♻️ SOUND QAULITY TOP NOTCH TALANT IS AN ASSETT to be TALENT LESS Or Talent more then less The vocals of this singer are awesome fits perfectly for this type of music. I never got the chance to see gentle giant in concert this dvdv download is great 9ne time I never thought a live concert could eaqaul in sound qaulity of a studio 🎙 recording FREE HAND AS JOHN PEEL MENTIONED ABOVE AVERAGE LP FREE HAND ✋now thats what I call good music
Legends of the past making many people happy in the present.
One word description of live shows - JOY ❤
This is the standard to which all but Gentle Giant fall short.
always loved gentle giant and managed to get my daughter into them as well which was tough at first but they gradually clicked with her and now she wears her gentle giant t-shirt with pride!
Saved for those who missed it.
I saw GG Once, 1977 - fabulous!
I want to BUY this!!
Amazingly talented and amazingly under-rated band. First saw them as the opener for Jethro Tull at Boston Garden in November 1972 (and it seems to me that a few of Derek Shulman's onstage mannerisms are indeed modeled after Ian Anderson's). Saw them again in 1974 at a small theater where they opened for Focus and blew them off the stage. I seem to recall that at one point Kerry Minnear's keyboards rose from being unseen below stage level and then emerged up on stage. Not quite Keith Emerson's flying piano, but a major hilite nonetheless.
Oui, c'est juste, ils doivent beaucoup à Jethro Tull, notamment la période "Thick as a brick" 🤠
like Genesis
One of favorite prog band of all time
I agree one hundred percent.
Saw them three times in concert. All dark but the light of the amps. Spot lights suddenly on to shoot them in mid air as if appearing from nothing.... they were great !
Me too 3 times. RIP Christopher Nupen.
GG, Tull, Zappa & Steely Dan : you won't find any better.
37:30 that f... bass sound. goooood
The more time passes, the better it gets. - Quanto mais o tempo passa, melhor fica.
Ninguém foi tão longe quanto esses caras!
Because there music is eternal they were always ahead of there times
Giant is a band that needs time to listen to as they are so complex it takes time to appreciate of complex they really are as the explored avenues that were never explored before they are pioneer,s
This is brilliant first class
First class all the way.
Super Legends!!!! Love!!!!!
I'm a huge fan of YES, but this is the first time I'm hearing these guys. Great stuff!
Yes the 70´s hade the best creators of progressive music. 1. Gentle Giant 2. King Crimson 3. Yes 4, Genesis 5. Gong 6. Flash. 7. Kansas 8. Caravan 9. Camel. 10. National Health 11.UK 12. ELP 13. Curved Air 14. Focus 15. Grobschnitt etc....
ever listen to Greenslade?
Yes a lot in the 70ies saw them one or times live also just a great band and singer I played 2-3 songs from with one of my bands I got then.
But Gentle Giant is still the greatest of all time when you talking progressive rock. I rank Greenslade maybe I forgot them? Anyway it’s a pity they were active in so short time.
Andy on drums also prev with Crimson a great drummer.
What about Van der Graaf Generator or Hatfield and the North ?
How did Kansas get on this list? Was w/you, except that one. Love GG. Saw 2x in the late '70s. Amazing shows!
Fantastic group pity they were so underrated☺👍
WOW! brilliant!
Best Band.......👍💚
I got to see them at a bar in New Jersey in 72 or 73 for 5 bucks
WHEN I WAS YOUNG I LISTENED TO MOSTLY BOB DYLAN AND PINK FLOYD AND I STILL DO BUT YOU BOYS ARE THE LEGENDS TOO
La musique et sa poésie se font comme l'amour se fait ; un échange de sang, une étreinte totale sans aucune précaution, sans aucune protection. Le grand saut à chaque fois !!
Magnific ! Here, music holds the middle between material nature and intellectual nature: it can strip love of its earthly crust, or give a body to the angel according to the disposition of the listener, his chords are thoughts or caresses
Beauty, I have no words
Mindblowing!!
So Talented!!!!
Super Extra Talented.
Thank you very much for uploading this precious piece of diamond.
Sheer genius and brilliance of innovation never again to be duplicated :(
@@drumchef6581 How true that is.
Love!!! Great!!!!
I love this show! The best!
OMG!!
An unique mix of talent and outstanding compositive ability. Love GG ❤
TOP!!! super TOP !!!!!! grandiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!
WOW
Amazing!!! Indescribable!
Nothing to be more approved about this band. Excellent!
Perhaps a joke or two. For the folks. I found it to be Hume.
So great! I wish they could have synced the video a bit better to audio. It’s just off slightly…. Not always noticeable. Still love it! REAL CREATIVE AND VIRTUOSIC MUSIC AND MUSICIANS. Blew my mind when I saw them open for Jethro Tull at the Baltimore Civic Center. Still blows my mind.
Thank you! This is magnificent!
THANK YOU !!!
Wow!!! Saw them up close and personal on July 5, 1976, at The Joker in Elyria, Ohio!
Insanely great!...
I don’t care who you are. Composer ? Imposibil to remember all this. These guys are truly genius no doubt. How the hell ist this possible ??
LOVE!! LOVE!! GREAT!! Thank You!!! VB
The best exquisite band❤❤❤
Incredibile band 😮
Epic❣️
In the end of 80's my friend said they music like overburnt fried rice but I don't care, I love the unique.

Eles são músicos extraordinários 👏👏👏👏👏
Mother Fu*^er... I wish I could have experienced the profound essence of what my brain. Was trying to digest it all.
