I made a quilt from dollar store fabric last year and Thanksgiving. It looks fabulous.
Wow, great job.
I think that the fabric there makes quilting and other crafts affordable for all people, quilting supplies at a quilt fabric store can be really expensive. I’m all about making crafts affordable to all.
I agree!
I got the fist blanket for a relative's doggie like five years ago for $1 and believe it or not, it's still holding!! That dog has chewed, teethed, grow up and still has his first blankie!!❤
Oh how sweet. I am so glad to hear it is all still holding. You did great!
I was also sceptical about dollar store fabric BUT was pleasantly surprised. Yes there are fugly fabrics but I found some that will be good for project fabrics 👍.
That is so great.
I have bought the fabric and I think it worked really well. I made a baby quilt with the fabric I’ve bought.
“Some were pretty ‘fugly’”-I’m dying! Can’t even tell you how much I said that in junior high/high school! 🤣 I’m excited to check out the craft section at Dollar Tree!
Lol I didn't even realize I had said it until I was editing ... Some ways I guess I'm still that Jr high girl 🤣🤣
FUGLY
New-to-me word
I'm surprised we didn't come up with it back in the 80s!
Made me laugh 😃
I think the fabric would be great for learning new techniques. I’m not concerned with messing up “starter” fabric 🤷🏾♀️
This is exactly the right attitude! Easy to experiment with! 💗💗
Quilting can get expensive quickly. There is nothing wrong with Dollar Tree fabric.
Whenever people started quilting a few hundred years ago, they used whatever they had on hand. They made do. They also made amazing works of art.
For a first-time quilter buying from Dollar Tree, Walmart or even thrift store is perfect. It makes it easier because you don't spend a lot and it's okay to make a mistake.
When I mentioned thrift stores, a large man's shirt will yield about 3 years of fabric, and you get bonus buttons for another project. Mens dress shirt are usually cotton or a cotton blends, and they come in many different colors.
A used sheet is good for backing. You get a lot of fabric in a sheet.
Sometimes, you get lucky and find a sewing machine that actually works in a thrift store.
Once you get comfortable sewing, then you can start upgrading and experimenting with different types of fabric and other supplies.
I bought some doggie design that washed well and made a doggie mat with it. Still has color and has worn well.
Thanks for the feedback Linda. That's really good to know ❤️❤️
I made coasters with that llama fabric!
Oh my gracious what a fabulous idea!!
I agree-use your best judgement to pick the project that fits with the fabric type that you have.
Great advice 🥰
Omg my favorites word when im trying to be nice. " Fugly" 😂ive used this word for decades
LOVE it so much.
I bought some shark printed fat quarters. I starched it heavily and made a baby quilt to welcome my third grandson. It’s been washed many times already. It’s still holding up and it’s super soft.
That's great to hear! I bet it's adorable 🥰
@@ISeeStarsQuilting I had to go to three different dollar trees to get the fabric. It was the first time I had seen it. That was in February and all they had was the individual fat quarters. I used a plaid and a couple of different solids. I bought them all from dollar trees. I used a free pattern from Karen Brown at just get it done quilts. My middle grandson spotted the shark fat quarter and brought it to me. It’s used a lot.
That was interesting information. I would say useful as well. Our dollars do not carry fabric.
My sister -in- laws found the fabric and shared it with me. This is good to use for beginners, learning new patterns and if you giving quilts away. In rural areas where there are no fabric stores this is a great find.
I totally agree with that. I'm so glad they were able to share some with you.
My Dollar Tree has expanded their crafts but so far everything is still the dollar twenty-five. No five dollar jelly rolls! I’m so jealous! 😉. I do like the fabric for practicing my machine quilting skills.
Maybe it's coming?? Fingers crossed for you!! 🤞🏻
Aughh! You gave away my secret! While their fabric isn't top quality, it's still pretty good quality for most projects.
It's ok! 😬 More demand equals more store product!
I am just getting into machine quilting. So I guess I will hit my Dollar tree stores and see what goodies I can find I like your show
Thank you 🥰 I'm glad you enjoy watching
The fabric you have purchased is the exact same fabric I purchased and they are from Walmart. It seems to me that maybe dollar tree buys last season Walmart fabric maybe 🤔I also was able to find some fat quarters that I literally just saw at Hobby Lobby! 👍🏻 So I'd say, Yes please!🤗 I agree, not super high quality but great for zipper pouches, table runners, coasters etc..... I have purchased Walmart fabric and made baby blankets and they have held up great! I think I'll pop by my DT and see what I see and make a baby quilt for my granddaughter. Thanks for sharing.
Oooh, I was thinking the same thing. Either over production or last season. Good to hear another opinion on it! Thanks for sharing! 🥰
Hello there! First of all I hope your shoulder gets better so you can start doing what you love again! It's so funny I have that llama fabric and my husband I think found it for me at Walmart last year and coincidentally I'm working with it right now to make him his own quilt. Also, I have the Paris fabric as well and I think that might have come from Michael's. I have a Dollar tree near me and I am going to go check it out for those rolls, $5 for jelly roll type thing even if it's only 20 strips is a really good price. In terms of my opinion about buying cheap fabric I agree with you 100% about what you said in the Walmart video. Everybody has a budget. We are artists and we have to do but we have to do. Sometimes I like to go to my local thrift store and I find really great stuff there and my lqs tries to stay competitive with at least Joanne's prices.
But the absolute cheapest way for me to make a quilt is to poke around in my closet and chop up whatever cotton clothes I have that I don't want anymore. Upcycling is a lot of fun because of the transformation of the fabric.
Thank you so much for your channel, and taking the time for your subscribers so we can learn something new. I love your HST quilt.
I'm thinking of doing that but figuring out a way to make it less random so the Stars really come out more.
Stay well! 💜
I love everything you said 🤩🤩 yes! And shoulder surgery is scheduled for next week 😭 not looking forward to it but ready to get it started healing. Thank you for your kind words
I went to the dollar tree last night, and I found the French fabric bundle!! I was so excited. I saw it on here and I wanted it, so it was exciting to find it. It was in a different row than the usual fat quarters, so that's why I didn't find it before. Also in the Halloween section, they had a box of Halloween fat quarters, so I've learned to look around the store, not just in the usual row.
ooooh! yay for you! I'm so glad you found your treasure! Also, I'll have to check out more areas. I usually try to put on my blinders when shopping because there is so much fun and useful things there! Now I'll just HAVE to for the sake of fabric 😘
Thank you for being so honest about the fabric i think for what your getting its a great price still cheaper than walmart i think its agreat deal for beginners working on say placemats etc im happy they are making their craft section alot bigger thank you
Hi. I didn't know either. I need to take a trip to $ Tree!
Good luck!
I have tried the fat quarter fabric in some of the different stores, I found the one in Kissimmee Florida had a nice verity including Jacrar cotton.
Virgina had a nice selection. even Rotary cutters, in Florida. My NY stores have not gotten the jelly Rolls or the fat quarter bundles. Great to teach sewing to young and adults.
I am hop
I use it to make coasters and tea caddie wallets
Oh, how cute!
I bought the Paris theme fabric at fabric land in Pickering Ontario.
I was practicing with a disappearing fat quarter quilt. The pattern said : done in 2 hours....not it took me a weekend. It turned out nice. Not perfect but bright and cheerful.
It took 16 fat quarters.
Sad that I paid more for it though.
Sorry it took longer, but it sounds really pretty.
Hello! I have been entertaining grandkids and having a fun summer but life is getting busier thru August. I hope you have a wonderful week ahead! Thank you for posting your video and for all that you do for the quilting community!
Thank YOU! Enjoy your summer time with the grandkids 🥳
I would love to know how the fabric washed, after the quilt was made. Maybe make a mini quilt and wash it. Let us know.
It's on my projects list! I plan to do a few reviews on both my dollar store quilts and my walmart fabric quilts after I finish them and use them/wash them. 🤞🤞
I too was excited when I found fabric at my Dollar Tree. I also think the quality works great for bags & other small projects. Not sure I'd use them for quilts.
I totally agree! Great for bags! 😘😘
My local store doesn't carry much fabric. I will check regularly. I think using this inexpensive fabric to test a block or stitch out an embroidery design is perfect.
Ooh embroidery testing! Yes! Great idea
I've used it from there great deals. Thanks for sharing
Good to know. Thanks for sharing!
Same brand Walmart and Meijer in our area! Have used for small drawstring bags etc... has held up very well so far!
That's good to know! Thanks for sharing
Haven’t checked out the Dollar Tree yet. It’s on my list of things to do. Thanks!
I hope you find some fun things to play with!
I didn't know Dollar Tree has a fabric or a craft section. I guess I'll have to check them out soon.
I was just in my dollar tree yesterday but craft section still only about six feet long and no fabric. Maybe in a few months, sigh. Hope your shoulder repair plans are coming soon. Thanks for being you.
Thank you. I have surgery scheduled for July 27th 😭😭😭 I'm not looking forward to it. But I do have several videos scheduled to post on RUclips so I'll still feel like I can be here w my quilters!
Thanks for the info! I will definitely keep my eyes 👀open for the fabric at my store.
I hope your store gets some 😘🤞🏻
Have you washed any of this fabric or used it on a quilt top? Very interested in jelly roll fabric performance.
It has held up just fine so far... I am not a super frequent washer of my quilts... But I will say it isn't a favorite quilt in my house. He thread count is lower and quality lower and it just isn't as comfy as a quilt. That's coming from my family who knows nothing about fabric thread count but do pick favorites 😂
Hey Christen!!! I will be definitely stopping at my closest DT tomorrow. They never carry the good stuff.🤞🏾hoping to see some goodies when I go. Thanks for sharing! - Stephanie
Hey Stephanie! Best of luck to you! I hope you find some goodies! 🤞🏻
i purchased the white fat quarter set. This same set sells at Hobby Lobby for $9.99
Awesome find. Is it the same quality and feel of fabric?
@@ISeeStarsQuilting same fabric company. I actually haven't opened them, but will do that and let you know
oh, wow! I guess I am going to have to check out my local Dollar Tree. Golly- and I even shy away from Hobby Lobby and Michaels. I love your "fugly" comment. You are SO funny! hugs.
Let me know what you find! I'd love to know if your selection is different ☺️
I totally agree! I would use it for certain projects for sure. Also I wanted to do that Pineapple thing but we were busy this summer I hope you do it again!
You will have access to the videos whenever you decide to work on the patterns I've done in the sewalongs 😘 maybe some other time!
How about Christmas ornaments
My dollar tree hasn't had as big a selection as yours did. I had bought some fat quarter bundles at Hobby lobby that looked like batiks but were not. I found the exact same bundle at my dollar tree. In this case I'll gladly spend $5 vs $10 on fabric. Y'all enjoy!
Awesome find! 🥳🥳
Have bought a few of the fat-quarter roll-ups at our local DT. Some of the solid colors were not 100% cotton - check labels! I washed the DT fabric before using and found the fat quarter shrunk significantly. But, still able to use it in a fun, pieced border.
Oh that's good to know! Thanks for sharing!
Yes. A lot of them are nit 100% cotton. Especially the ones that are rolled up.
My DT usually never has the cool stuff so I only run in there for stuff I know they'll have. There are many where I live but the one I like to go to is across town close to my chiropractor, so I'll stop in when I have a chance. Last time I went I noticed the craft section had really expanded. I don't remember if they had fabric or not. They have a lot of wood and painting type stuff and also a lot of vinyl and supplies for a cricut type machine. I'm wondering if the fabric is similar to the Pioneer Woman line at Walmart. I have some of that but haven't used it yet. It seems to be thicker and rougher than the quilt shop fabric.
I bought the pioneer woman fabrics too! This feels thicker and rougher than her fabrics that I purchased. Hold out a bit, my dollar tree went through a transitioning phase and now has all the wood things to paint and fun crafts
Hi! One of my local Dollar Trees had the jelly roll fabrics for $5.00. I purchased (4) in the designs I liked. Two unicorn-star-rainbow themed, two French-themed. The Unicorn fabric is sooo nice! I'm halfway through completing the quilt for my granddaughter. I did cut each each of the strips in half, making it (40) and it really worked nicely into a 'jelly roll race' quilt.
I haven't tried the French-themed, but for $5.00 I am willing to give it a go!
Thank you, Christen, for the feedback! I really enjoy your channel! 👍 💫
Thanks for sharing your experience, Annette! I didn't see any patterned jelly roll strips, but now I'll HAVE to check every time I go through there to see what I might be missing out on! 😘
Very curious if you’ve washed the fabric and if it shrunk more than usual or pilled at all? I would hate to make something by hand that doesn’t warrant the time.
@@sarahsharma4258 I did wash the quilt once it was completed. The fabric has done very well. My granddaughter loves it!
i never seem to have plain colors of fabriuc, solid one color.
Those fat quarters and that jelly roll that you picked up are EXACTLY what our Michael's carries here in east coast canada (obviously, not for as good of a deal).
Wait a bit maybe you'll see it at the dollar store soon 🤷🏼♀️😂
Hi Christen, What state to you live in? I live in California, our Dollar Tree only has the fat quarters that are rolled up.
I have bought several and made a couple draw string back packs. They came out really cute. They had pink VW wagons on them.
I live in Texas. Good to know it reaches other states too! 😘😘
It's decent fabric, especially compared to fat quarters from the craft stores. We don't have Dollar Tree Plus stores in my area, so I hadn't seen the bundles. It seems like the fabric gets picked over quickly, especially the holiday collections (when they have those, I find them with the seasonal craft stuff instead of in the fabric aisle.)
Yes, my store is the same way - I don't usually actually find it when I'm looking for it. Its just a random accident when I do happen to find fun things like this! They get picked over very quickly 🤷♀️
Not sure I'll see fabric in Dollar Tree, I live in a pretty small town. The only thing exciting at my Dollar Tree was when a woman recently drove her car right into the store.
Not sure I'd buy it but I bet I'll have customers that bring their Dollar Tree fabric quilts to be quilted.
I hope your shoulder heals quickly and that you're back to quilting soon. Hugs but not on your right side!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on fabric when it comes to longarm ease and quality of life for the quilt! 💕
It looks like what we get at walmart here.
I thought it looked really familiar in feel and style too 💗
I saw the exact same “French Metro” fat quarter bundle at Hobby Lobby a few months ago and I pretty sure it was $9.99
I think after reading the comments it has to be an over production of fabrics steal that dollar tree got. Lucky find!
today i bought rolls like fatquarter size fabric, a light and dark of all the plain colors and some sort of swirly, for $1 EACH I AM A TONE ON TONE FABRIC LOVER AND OUTRIGHT PATTERN BUT AM ALWAYS LACKING SMALL SOLID COLORS.
I think it depends on what you will use it for. If it was hopefully an heirloom quilt, I would prefer good cotton. But table toppers, quilts for yourself, bowl cozies etc...I'm sure it would be fine. My issue is that it's probably made in China and I would prefer not to buy from them. Unfortunately, that's an almost impossible goal. From what I understand from a fabric rep who was on youtube, that starchy feel is to stiffen the fabric so it seems to be better quality. I'll have to check out my local Dollar Tree. With fat quarters now running about $4, I'm willing to buy 5/$5. Maybe a roll too. I would be interested to know about the accuracy of cutting on that roll. Some manufacturers are not accurate to 2 1/2". Can you tell us how well that roll is cut? Oh, and I think it may have been Eleanor Burns....and if not I apologize to whomever it was...that said, "If you think your fabric is ugly, you're not cutting it small enough." 😊
Completely different subject from the video, but are you going to do the Cup of Cheer Advent calendar??:):)
I had to look that one up because I hadn't heard of it yet but.... Um I love it and now I want to do it!! I will have to think on it for a few days. I always admire the kimberbell designs and projects but have not attempted one yet. Going really big on a first project is absolutely my style 😂 were you thinking of doing it??
I bought that same France fabric at hobby lobby for $19
Interesting! Thanks for sharing 🤩
Pretty sure some of the fat quarters are left overs that were sold elsewhere because I know purchased some of the ones my store had at Walmart 2 years ago
True. But on the positive side, if you run short of something, like maybe you had originally had another plan for it, there is the possibility that you may still find it on a shelf at a place like Walmart, wh is an unlikely possibility at a quilt shop.😉
I'm wondering if they got discount access to an over production of fabric items. Several other commenters said they saw the same bundle at walmart
I use the fat qt for mask making and bowl cozies. You should giveaway a bundle. It would be nice for someone like me who does not have a 5dollar section at her dollar 🌳 tree. Lol
Lol that's a great idea! I will see what I can come with for a giveaway that won't be less than the shipping 🤪
Watch the prices. Some of the things can be bought cheaper at a regular craft store.
I have noticed that with the craft selection items.... A "quick painting craft" for the kids could end up costing over $30 real quick.
My Dollar Tree doesn’t have it yet 😞
Aw 😢 Maybe it will sometime soon... I guess it all depends on the area you live and what they feel the market demands are?
Family dollar is carrying fabric as well !( yes I know dollar tree bought family dollar)
I didn't know they bought them out! Good to know they have fabric as well. I wonder if it is the same selections
@@ISeeStarsQuilting I'm not sure . I've only seen "fat quarters " in individual rolls not bundles.
The last time I was at my Dollar Tree, they had what they called "fat quarters", but they were rolls, very off cut and only a few solid colors...red, blue, black and green. The 1st 1 you showed is the same brand Walmart carries. I haven't ventured into making a quilt yet, but if my store has what you showed us, they would work great for the hot pads and table runners I've been experimenting with...I think...lol Thanks for the video!
I think it would work well for what you said! Table runners would be a fun project and an into to beginner quilting
I've only seen the rolled up fat quarters at my stores too.
What are your favorite on-line fabric shops?
I love supporting small if I can like Etsy shops or local with online shipping. I also like connecting threads, Missouri star quilt shop and fat quarter shop!
Love the video, have to check my store out.!!!!!
I hope your store carries it! 🤞🏻🤩
Just because it says 100% cotton does not mean it’s anything close to quality fabric
I do agree... This is not great quality fabrics, but it will do if you know what you're working with!
.97 cents at walmart
It's great to price shop. Thanks for sharing! 🤩
Don't confuse Dollar General, and Family Dollar with Dollar Tree. Nothing in my Dollar Tree is more than $1.25.
And some of the fabric is so..dry they’ve posted in some of places, not to purchase it. Especially when your new to quilting and looking for good decent fabric, and need to learn about fabrics period. Buyer beware.
It is a hit or miss - Perhaps thats good to note that while sometimes you can find great deals, inexperienced fabric shoppers should be careful. Thanks for sharing!
