they argued it wasn't rape because they had the husband's permission? I don't have words, wtf
The fact that the word 'rape' has to be censored for youtube is unsettling, but fits with what you said: "It doesn't like to acknoledge it, or talk about it.'
It doesn't have to and tbh I think this is a questionable self-induced editorial choice.
She chose to do that so she can make money off the video. She could speak about it openly, but companies wouldn't want to advertise on the video.
@zlifoet4305 more info on this? That's the first time I see this word being censured on my political RUclips and I'm a bit skeptical this is a requirement to be monetized.
@@Tbop3 Certain words trigger RUclips automatically, I’m not a RUclipsr so it’s difficult for me to provide details but whenever I see something excessively censored on RUclips - that’s the quoted reason. I assume she wouldn’t avoid it if she could get away with it because it makes an impact and that’s her professed reason to make the video in the first place, right? It’s also worth keeping in mind that demonetised videos get less reach.
same goes for any violent word or crime i think? its good the algorithm doesn't push that because its something you should look into intentionally and not when youre already in a bad headspace. especially for victims, the word is very harsh and can trigger flashbacks. Im all for open discussion on this but i do think it should be talked about differently with children or just anyone present. it requires tact because its raw and real and intrinsic to many lives experiences and historical scars.
That all Adele Haenel did to lose 'perfect victim' status was call paedophile rapist Roman Polanski a predator in a public setting, and to tell her abuser to shut their mouth is damning of society.

In Spain, black football players who suffer from racism experience just the same thing. When they react and talk back to those who have injured them, they are accused on Spanish media of being "emotional", "unbalanced", "violent", or "lacking composure". The only way to be recognised as a meritorious victim is by standing silently, enduring passively, so that the Spaniards may enjoy a vicarious repentance of their sins in peace, without being made accountable of their crimes.
The most horrifying thing is that this is untraceable if you don't know something weird happened to you.
And even when tested positive for those drugs, who the hell would want to go to court and all that legal process saying "I suspect my partner has raped me that night while I was asleep"
Here the case was easy to make because it was video taped and shared, and even then the all trial sounded horribly humiliating from Gisèle's perspective.
But imagine not having a single shred of evidence... just "that day I fell asleep weirdly, was positive for sedatives and traces of intercourse were found". It SHOULD be enough to get a case going, but in today's age where sexual assault is taken so lightly unless it's "violent", this kind of evidence risk leading to nothing of consequence in the end...
There is also research indicating the less aware and the less memory a victim formed of an event can actually exacerbate trauma symptoms. People aren't dead to the world just because they are unconscious

I mean, that IS how most people are raped. They are drunk or drugged. It’s violating as any other rape. People literally posted videos of being with drunken girls on RUclips and people called them “sex tapes”. No, they are violence against women tapes. It took women complaining constantly for RUclips to even recognize this was wrong. They still keep up men talking badly about women calling us less than while taking down any woman who wants to talk about what happened to her. Hypocrites
"if he knew that it was going to be rape he wouldve asked there not to be pictures" the fact that someone used that AS A DEFENCE is insane
Right? My brain glitched trying to process it, the video carried on playing I had to go back and listen again to make sure I hadn't misheard. I don't believe in any higher power, but I want there to be a hell. I don't care about a heaven I just need there to be a hell.
@scorpionbraid And I could see the argument that oh they didnt know somehow and if they did they wouldnt do it... But they just wouldnt have wanted pictures???
I think the person who claimed he had the husband’s permission should be locked up for all of time…
Seeing this while a rapist is inaugurated as the president of my country… The patriarchy is still alive across the world, and it harms all of us. Thank you for this video. I’d heard about this case but hadn’t looked much into it.

I was not believed when it happened to me. Not by my boyfriend, not by the police, not by my father. In their minds, I had done this to myself, and was evil for trying to make them feel bad for me.
I didn’t want them to feel bad for me. I wanted help. I wanted safety. A hug. To be told it would be alright. Protection from the man who had already hurt me so badly.
I know, they treat every accusation at other men as if it were an accusation at themselves.

I am very sorry this happened to you. You are not a victim, but a survivor on many aspects and I’m glad you are still here. Hopefully you could or possibly can in the future hold the person that harmed you accountable
The idea of the perfect victim is a really insidious one that effects a lot of the media. Back a few months ago when I was reading an American article about the trial they tried to spread the rumor that Dominique was doing this because Gisèle had had an affair at work a few years before he started abusing her. I remember thinking that it was a very inappropriate comment and a direct attempt to discredit her.
If my partner cheated on me, I’d leave them. Not drug and have others r*pe them. This man is unhinged and so are all the people who had anything at all to do with this or who blame victims. Wow.
As someone whose been a victim of sexual abuse throughout my life it extremley emotional but incredible to see how many women stood behind her and made this a movement. So many men but more schokingly women did not support me when I called out the perpetrators in any case
One thing that has stuck with me from the coverage of the trial was an interview with a man who lived in the same town/area as Gisèle Pelicot. He said that he didn't understand the big deal - no children had been hurt, and no one had been murdered. To him, the lives of the men were more important. It is baffling and disturbing and rampant in society.
The ‘perfect victim’ bit was really interesting. I don’t know about anyone else, but I would certainly watch a whole separate take on that by you, in a whole new video !
Alice has another video going deeper into this topic. Search for “Anatomy of a Fall and the Medusa Myth” from 9 months ago

Thank you for bringing up the status of Gisèle Pélicot as a "perfect victim": this is not an angle I've been considering. Something else I'd bring up is that in France, lawyers are allowed to try everything to defend their clients - including making some of the terrible allegations, and making some horrible comments that were directed at Gisèle. There are countries where this is not allowed: some specific phrases are outlawed, with the goal to prevent the victim from being re-traumatised by the trial. Trials being a second trauma is generally said to be one of the main factors why victims drop charges or don't dare to report their abusers.
The court system treats them so badly it's no wonder people think the victims are to blame.
To me, Gisele is one of the heroes of the feminist movement. I highly admire her bravery. It deeply saddens me that even in the 2025, even in a liberal country like France, a woman can still suffer such horrors from a loved one and her oppressors will defend themselves in disgusting ways.
France is liberal but they definitely do not treat women well.
Keyword “liberal”. That’s one of the reasons why it happened. What do you expect from conservatism-lite
Liberal societies are more prone to this kind of transgression than conservative ones.

Yep, I already thought about the "perfect victim" during the Heard VS Depp (second) trials. Like, as if being a nuanced person takes away your victim status? Also, it was kinda baffling how people were ready to perceive Depp in a good light despite his many flaws (ex: his addictions) while the general public lashed out at Heard for so many illegitimate reasons (ex: her bisexuality). Btw, the reason people did not support Tonglet and Castellano and thought "they had it coming" was bc both women were queer and in a relationship with each other. During the trials, the rapists' lawyer also built a portrayal of "simple men" from the countryside, tried to humanise them while the victims were portrayed as deviants basically. Oh, and also the rapists' lawyer was accused of sexual assaults as well, a few years later...
But yeah, it's so worrying. How if a woman is not perfect (in patriarchal standards, which are mostly unreachable, btw), well, she doesn't deserve justice.
As heartbreaking as this case is, it was a great emblem of how this is a systemic issue, men are raised to see women as not human.
Raised has nothing to do with it. They can still choose to act right and don’t have to adopt the beliefs that are presented to them. No excuses. Women’s humanity is obvious.
I just kept thinking about how she would walk around in public for years and pass men that violated her and she had no clue…I just can’t. Her story broke something in me.
I've been so horrified hearing about what happened to this woman, that it's almost like I forget how much courage it took for her to do what she did.
I have never felt as unsafe in a country as travelling in France as an Australian when i was 15. The men were SO aggressive, and really really didnt care about my discomfort or disinterest. And I do mean men, not other teenagers
it is the plain and simple truth; she did nothing wrong, and has nothing to be ashamed of. apportioning any complicity to a victim against all evidence is nothing short of vile.
If we assume that the number of rapists in this particular area is more or less representative of the number of rapists in any given area, then that's scary. At the same time, it fits with the numbers of men in the study in which men were asked whether they would rape if they knew they would get away with it (unfortunately I haven't been able to find that study again).
I don’t think I can stomach this topic because of personal experiences but I adore your channel; so Im leaving a comment for the algorithm! Much love, keep up the hard work!
It only took the indignation of a man (the man guard) for this whole case to be taken seriously…
I think she said the guard was a woman
Thank you for handling the topic with care without dwelling on the (horrible) details.
On the topic of using "culture" as a defense of rape: I was pleasantly surprised to hear that during a recent high-profile trial in Quebec (Gilbert Rozon), the prosecution called a sociologist to testify on rape culture and debunk a bunch of ideas about the perfect victim. I thought it was a positive reversal of the usual "culture" defense.
She should have been the "Person of the year" 2024 on Time Magazine. But weirdly some orange coloured piece of lard made it on there. Don't know why.
To be fair I didn't know who she was before this video however she is very brave, however, to compare her with the elected president of the most powerful nation on earth is a bit much
@RyuKyu.77 lol yeah, sure, "elected president of the most powerful nation". Shining example of a human being sure warrants "person of the year" HAHA
@@RavikantRai21490 person of the year doesn't mean who's the best person, but rather who's the most influential person of the year, without a doubt, it's Trump in 2024, unfortunately, he has permanently reshaped US politics in his vision, now democrats are center right in a lot of issues
Back in the day, Hitler was Person of the Year as well, so it fits to put Trump there now. Having a large impact doesn't mean having a positive one. More recognition for Gisèle Pélicot would've been nice, though.
So much to say, including how France and other western countries label refugees and immigrants from the global south as responsible for sexual violence because our cultures are “backward”, while clearly sexual violence and rape culture are a reality in the west just as they are everywhere else.
Thanks for making this video and bringing out the larger context of French society here.
I want to point out, though, that the causality that you present for why men turn from victim to perpetrator(past experience of violence, economic distress, etc) seem like oversimplification. Systematic sexual violence including CSA operates as an organised setup among the wealthiest : Epstein, Weinstein etc. And like you said women going through experiences of violence, distress etc far too rarely turn into perpetrators. So the answer still lies in the patriarchal structure of male domination and its maintenance through violence.
I can imagine you had to take a few breaks while writing this video. Thanks for making it
People are not good at telling, if someone is evil or not. Even after Years of "knowing" a Person , You possibly do _not_ really know a Person. Everything was only discovert by Coincidence, basically.. Only the People _who did it_ , really knew about it...
Do we actually believe so many adult men have trouble understanding consent in 2025? Is more conversation and education really needed or do we just have to stop accepting such ridiculous excuses from these types of men who know exactly what they are doing?
This is something I've been saying as a man for nearly a decade now. Not once have I ever struggled with the concept of "no means no." The issue is that a certain segment of the population is being raised to exolicitly disregard consent, not that they haven't been taught about consent and don't know any better.
No one needs to be taught consent. It’s very obvious whether or not somebody else wants to do something, and you know whether or not you have asked somebody.
@@blackswan4486Also if they’re sober, right in their mind, or is able to give consent. That’s incredibly important too (hence this case). They can be drugged and comply or say yes.
Absolutely incredible work and research. Ive never been able to put into words what rape culture is and you defined such an atrocity with such eloquence .
My biggest question, too, was how come none of the men in the chat room (or whatever) who witnessed some of this going on, did not report it to the Police. Not one!
I mean, I'd answer you. But it's not a good or comforting answer and will get censored.
They wouldn't because they do not see women as people, and their entitlement makes them unable to see the damage they cause. They want their toy, and they want it now. Also, they won't alienate other men, who are real poeple in their eyes, to protect women, who aren't people in their eyes. To these men it'd be like killing 5 people to save a rabbit. They are that dehumanizing.
Men cover for each other. This is why I laugh when they say "not all men"
Why should people who go the extra mile to join pervert chats rattle each other out? They're all in on it.

Thank you for waiting a bit before releasing this video. As always, well thought out and not just a response to the immediate issue, but delving into other themes
I can’t help but think about how the mere fact of having the trial, putting all the evidence out there with the defendants and victims having a chance to tell their sides and have those sides adjudicated, is an important form of justice. SA is so often hidden, secret. Personally, I wouldn’t want my assaulter to go to prison because I am an abolitionist and a Christian. But, I do wish that everyone knew what he had done. I wish that he had to carry that around with him like I do. This is what Christine Blasey Ford did for Kavanaugh. Everyone knows what he did. He has to carry that around with him forever. It’s not full justice because we do live in a culture where people excuse men and boys acting like that. But, it feels like a good step that doesn’t involve the state perpetrating violence.
Ok but what if the person who assaulted you does that to somebody else? Why is their freedom more important than other people's safety? Public shaming is not an effective deterrent since a lot of people side with abusers anyways.
Giséle is an icon, and the trial was massive here in the UK. She was so brave and I really admire her choice to go public, and bringing this case to the world. But the sentence should have been for life, his level of planning, the amount of documentation he had, how he seeked out other men. It's disgusting. I really hope Giséle and her daughter can find some closure away from this man.
There are things completly wrong about about France, in my opinion. French law is weird, and banning hijabs isn't really promoting women's choice. I don't know much else about French culture but that's always set me off.
As a Ligurian I've never listened to a French person for this long. Very well made video, it was eye-opening
It is also very upsetting that Giselles daughter also came forward, since pictures of her were also found on the camera of her “sperm Donner” refuses to acknowledge them and she did not get any closure
Also the sentences this men received were to mild. They all should get lifelong and taken their licenses to work with people taken away
To be perfectly honest, when i saw the title of the video I was very annoyed that yet another feminist seemed to be centering the victimhood of the woman affected rather than the actions of the perpetrator and the social trends that led to them. I'm glad your video was much more in line with what I think is important.
Thank you for covering this.

I am only halfway in and there are so many things I want to talk about. this is a tough video to make, a difficult topic to talk about, an unbelievable trial to make public... I cant put everything into words, but I am so glad for all the bravery involved.
Yikes I didn't know much about this in large part due to cutting corporate media from my life but this is horrifying and especially in the extent of denial. I agree that the use of punishment as a deterrence is not effective since stricter punishments does not make crime level decrease. Fighting against systemic injustice is a hard and slow fight but it is the only just and equitable response.
An actual complaint...with the thumbnail: "abuse" doesn't even begin to capture what happened to Gisèle.
Of course. I suspect that word was used for algorithm reasons.

If anyone is looking for a commentary on perfect victims, there's a Chinese drama that touches on it. It's called 不完美受害人, which literally means "Imperfect Victim". It tells the story of workplace sexual harassment/rape, as well as rape culture. It's not a perfect commentary, as it is a narrative first and foremost, but it still has a very interesting and nuanced perspective of consent, self-doubt, shame, domestic violence, and power dynamics.
Quick synopsis: someone calls in that a rape is occurring and the police find a wealthy and powerful CEO in bed with his self-proclaimed lover, his young secretary. The young secretary is then thrust into a high profile rape trial where she has to come to terms with what truly happened that night, her relationship with the CEO, and more importantly herself.
There are moments where the main character's behavior is genuinely frustrating, but I think it actually helped me practice empathy, as well as demantle internalized misogyny and rape culture concepts. Additionally, a lot of media criticisms center on "would this be a logical choice for this character to do", but it erases the fact that humans don't operate on pure logic all the time. We do stupid things and act in ways that genuinely don't make sense to others because of our past experiences, current thoughts, and future desires. I think this drama portrayed this very well.
Thank you for covering this. Absolutely abhorrent.
Thanks you for your video. I've been sitting in comfortably for a while with my contradictions, between the desire to see these perpetrators pay for what they did and my deep belief in restorative justice, I'm glad you took the discussion there, it makes me grasp it more clearly.
Is there any chance that we might one day get French subtitles for your videos ? I'd really love to share them with people who don't speak English (namely my mother).

That a nurse was among the perpetrators is chilling. Someone who should have training and an understanding of consent in regards to bodily autonomy. But then again, I'm studying to be a teacher, and in the first unit, Education 100 if you will, the lecturer had to make ckear the point that romantic and/or sexual relationships between teachers and students is abuse, unethical, immoral and illegal, because she's had students, who have made it to university, who did not know that.
The 21st century thus far has not been great for women. Here's hoping that changes.
