The puzzles (school, supermarket, etc) are basically the obstacles you faced after your mother's dead. Your father was making you go to the supermarket to buy stuff, but you had (i'm not sure about this) social anxiety and it was hard for you to go there. You couldn't talk to anyone, you were depressed bc of your mother's death. That's the school thing. I guess at some point, you were getting bullied, which made things worse, but one day you stood up and showed the bully who's the boss (the big mannequin at the end). Fear darkness is probably how you overcomed your fear from that creepy small room, that your father made you go in to give him stuff.
At one point you decided to just leave, which seemed like escaping from a prison. But after you managed to escape, your father was angry about it (i guess), but slowly managed to understand your choice and move on?
There's that cool theory that the neighbour had not only a son and a wife, but a daughter too (the rollercoaster dream) and both died because of him. His poor driving skills are the reason why his wife died and his poor building skill are the reason why his daughter died (You, his son, and your sister were playing on a ramp, build by the neighbour himself. While you two were playing, she somehow fell from the platform through the roof ((there's a hole in the roof, from which you could get in the house))), so he decided to lock his only thing that's left in his basement to protect him. He even couldn't cook, so he always ordered chinese food...

I believe that the house ever expanding is the child seeing the house as being big and empty after his mother's death, caused by the car accident. The shadow monster represents fear and anger and depression. The father (the neighbor) became extremely overprotective after the death of his wife, and not wanting to lose his son, kept him inside and away from others. This gave him mental issues like social anxiety which caused his fear of supermarkets, schools, and also caused other things like his fear of the dark. The child (you) finally ran away after he felt his house had become a prison, and his demons (shadow monster/depression, etc) haunted him every since. He puts up missing posters because he wants to find his son who ran away. Throughout the game you overcome your fears in the fear minigames (supermarket, school, etc), and because you are no longer held back by fear, you feel like youve superpowers because you are stronger. In the end you finally get over your mother's death, and protect yourself from your own demons (again, the shadow monster/depression/anger etc), and finally free yourself of the monster when you defeat him at the end. The house on the neighbors back and the house in general also represents the mind/conscious/mental stability of the neighbor, ever getting more wild and insane and unstable. In the end, although you defeated your demons, the neighbor is still stuck inside his own head (the house after beating the shadow thing), with his own demons and fears. thats why you can walk through your own exit, because you conquered your fears and sadness, but the exit in the neighbor's house is blocked by the shadow thing. Again, this is my interpretation. If you think its true, give it a bump! Thanks!

that's the pose developers use when creating character models, it's also used when characters spawn in (for example if you enter a door that takes you to a new area)
Ok dude, so I fell down the seemingly endless rabbit hole that is the Hello Neighbor story interpretation. I tried reading into all sorts of potential truths, but your perspective at the end of your video was very powerful. Maybe it's just the blend of the animation of a young man coming into that age of forgiveness and enlightenment of himself, the guitar, the discussion of emotional trauma and understanding the sins of the father so to speak. I was moved to tears, and honestly feel a bit better myself now putting HN to bed. Cheers!

Demons. It was their demons. Who we play as finally gets over them. But the neighbor, didnt. He still has his demons and can't beat them. Not alone, at least.

What I think happened: ( its long)
The shadow man is fear, and the neighbor would rather shut himself away from his fear.
His fear comes from his wife dying in the crash. He has two kids (maybe you're the boy but this theory can be adapted) and the daughter gets away or runs away. He fears this happening with his son so he locks him up in the basement to keep him "safe". He beats his son to deter him from trying to escape but eventually his son gets away. In desperate want of a family, the neighbor kidnaps you, the kid who lives across the street, and projects his son onto you. He builds the pen to keep you in, but you percieve it and the house as being massive because you are afraid. When you escape, the neighbor has no-one and becomes more afraid, depressed and reclusive until he burns down the house with himself in it. You see the house being massive again because your old fears are revived, hence the apparition of the shadow creature in the ruins, but you were able to face your fears unlike the neighbour, who locked himself away from them, represented by the house with the shadow creature knocking on the locked door.
If that's true, that would mean a LOT of what we see is representative of something else and not to be taken literally. Which would add a whole new layer of psychological horror to this game.

MynJack I think the neighbor accidentally push her down from his tall house, maybe they had an argument and the neighbor is feeling stress as he already lost his wife, and he push her down accidentally

This game is so confusing but so complex at the same time. I wish it didn't have to end but I wish there was more. I like it overall

Igp, look for the neighbor's picture frame. It's I think in the room that is like an attic. The one with the circular window.. I'm not very sure about the place, but you can start from there. Also, the cardboard cutout of the girl and boy, are the children. And the weird glass breaking noise before you end Act 2 is the boy. That's why when you get to the room the big neighbor destroyed, the cutout of the boy was there. But I just wanted to say, it's been fun watching you play Hello Neighbor. I laugh everytime you get angry when something goes wrong. It's been a really fun series to watch, and I hope that it will get even more fun for the coming years. I only started watching you a year ago, and you're already one of my favorite RUclipsrs. I hope you get really far, too. Sincerely, RealXenos999
I honestly cried for several hours when u explained it..
So what if it wasn't the mother but another child. The mother had left the children with the neighbor (the father) and took off. Now they had gotten into an accident and one of the children died. The father ended up becoming depressed and obsessive about the kids death so he kept the other kid (the player) inside the house, maybe homeschooling, not going out to play, ect ect. Now the player as a kid sees that as being locked up, having to go through these difficult puzzles just to get out of a locked up house. Now as he gets older and has to go back to the house because of the eviction, he has to face his fear of being cooped up and having to stay "safe" at all times. I think the 'demon' is the kids fear as well as the fathers guilt for the death of one kid and the mother taking off. But who knows, I can't wait to see all the other theories :D
It actually might be that neighbor just was overprotective to younger you, locking u at home, so that influenced how u saw him as a villain. And at some point u just ran away from home and never came back till this moment

The Neighbor could actually be the boy and you are the father. The kid had others build for him, and the father (player) is trying to stop the boy.......
I think inbthe end the sequence eith the neighbor in his house with the shadow is a reference to how he feels. He tries to lock and keep his guilt and fear (shadow man) away from him so he barricades it trying to avoid it. He asks you help and pity for him . The shadow of guilt that hunts him is there in the neighbor but hes just trying to make it go away. Thats why the neighbor tried to barricade the shadow in another part of himself.
When you locked him out of the one room, it's as if you locked him out of your room!
Theres a part of the house that you need to get to using the umbrella and there you will find a picture and some items that will explain everything
everyone is getting so deep into the lore and who the shadow man is
who i think he is is Aaron (the neighbor's son; cardboard cut out of the boy) but as an adult just as our main character Nicky Roth has grown up

i think the neighbour is trying to keep you away from the basement where the thing is, so i think the neighbour is just protecting you.
i think we got forced from our home
from what i can tell it seems like that we are the neighbors kid, but after this accident with his wife our mom we must of been taken away because he was unstable. after we were placed with a foster family that just so happened to be next door or the neighbor followed us. after the first scene when the neighbor captures us, to us its scarry but to him he is getting his son back from being stolen by the government or whoever. and as a kid we must of grown up knowing nothing or very little about the neighbor, making the whole thing seem like a kidnapping.
after when we are grown up i imagine we found out a bit about our past at some point and then over the series of the game resolved our issues with him being our biological dad. because if you look at the family photo he holds up its a compleatly different family so thats where i get the foster care or adoption thing from.it would be interesting since a situation like that would be very tramatic to a child and could result in these episodes of PTSD from both the monthers death as well as being removed form their family for their own safety.

We most likely saw the neighbour hiding something, possibly his kid after he accidentally killed his sister. That is why he kidnapped us. They blew the game tbh
I think in the end, you take the position of a neighbour when you protecting younger self like the neigbour did when you were a child, but you think he was evil because of the child perspective. In the end neighbour is happy to see you, because you survived. Maybe his family was killed by that creature, and the one thing he could do, is to save other child who broke into his house not knowing what dangers are waiting for him. That's my perspective.

IGP, In Act 3. Near the of the house with the 3 windows. You'll need to get on the roof. In that room is something special, and if you don't have the gramophone. You can jump on the railing then onto one of the plants make your way across them, and you'll the umbrella. Make sure one of the windows are broken.
You are not his son, he does not want you to get hert by his son. That's why the neighbor catches you, and puts you back in your house!
Anyone else notice that the truck that drives by in the final scene where the player is moving in that truck is the same as the one in the crash scene. Just some food for thought that the whole nightmare could have been a vision about the future because that truck is not crashed.

Theory : We are the neighbor's son . The neighbor has had the shadow man lurking inside him for a awhile , the shadow man representing his anger and regret and sadness . His wife notices this , and finally gathers the courage to leave , taking the car and his children . The neighbor watches them leave , only to see the crash . They go to hospital and one of his children die , along with his wife . We end up with short term memory loss from knocking our head and the thing that causes the words to be jumbled up , thus us forgetting our Father and not knowing about him . At the end , the neighbor wants to leave with us , and to leave his demons (the shadow man) behind , but stays to make sure they never escape . We go and live our life's , knowing why our Father did what he did
Best storyline
I think the shadow man represents multiple things depending on the character. For our character, the shadow man represents fear as in our fear of the neighbor. For the neighbor, the shadow man represents the devil AND fear. Both characters deal with their forms of fear aka the shadow man (Player- protecting younger self and standing up to shadow man.
Neighbor- avoiding the shadow man and not facing reality due to the loss of his family. This leads to the neighbor burning his house down thus committing suicide. Hence the ending when the neighbor's trapped in the house with the shadow and accepting his fate)

I had a theory that the shadow represents fear.
For you because you lived traumatic experiences with the neighbor and his house.
And for the neighbor(at the end) maybe the cops that came to take him for what he did.
Also at the end the neighbor was trying to keep his own hatred out.
My theory is that the neighbor lost his kids and the shadow man is his fears, it has been haunting him since he lost his kids, he is probably doing this for his kids, you are one of his kids but he dosen't recognize you.
i think that i know why he is surprised at the end, when he sees you throught the window, it is like the golden apple scene, he sees you passing, then he looks his hand and looks that he has gloves. pd:i think he has gloves because when he looks at his hands he remembers the accident

There is a house with 3 windows at the near top of the neighbors house that has the family's portrait on the ground near a shelf
The things in the suitcase are the same as when you packed it for the eviction notice and you were leaving
My theory is that the neighbour's wife died in the car crash and he had to raise 2 children on his own a daughter and a son. One day he brought his son and daughter to an amusement park where the son pushed the daughter onto the rails and she died, then the neighbour locked his son in the basement where the son died of starvation and the shadow man is the son reincarnated as a demon. To hide this the neighbour put missing signs up. After all no one would question a grieving father...
Tell me if you have any problems with the theory I'm open to suggestions!
