  • Eurovision 1966 saw many firsts, a man in a skirt in Kenneth McKellar, a woman in pants in Ase Kleveland, Udo Jürgens wins on his third try for Austria and Milly Scott becomes the first black contestant in Eurovision history. The Luxembourg audience grew increasingly unhappy during the voting as 1966 also was a year of obvisou block voting, though it may have had to do with the songs as well. Also: Dominico Modugno returns for Italy and Raphael participates for Spain for the first time.

You forgot to mention the sheer irony of the titel of Denmark’s last song before the break being “Stop mens legen er god” = “stop while the play still is fun” (or “stop while it’s still just fun” ) 😂😂

P.s. Thx for these historical videos - I’ve been waiting for something like this 🌻

1966 is quite a good year. Norway my fave aswell. Also love Austria, Luxembourg, Switzerland. Sweden's lyrics to me are hilarious (as a Dutch person I'm not one to talk for 1966) but the whole story of the pig farmer and the princess just fascinates me😂 And honestly it's a good song. Milly Scott was at that time a very in demand jazz singer..the song really didn't do her justice. She said once that she felt her low score was because she was black and that afterwards she went outside and sulked about it when Udo came and sat beside her and said hey you're great don't be sad. If that is true, no idea. I mean it could be in the 60's...but then again the song really wasn't as good compared to many of the others. So who knows. Also not sure whether Udo comforted her because he agreed with her or that he was just being a gentleman consoling a dissapointed young lady and colleague. Either way it was a nice gesture on his part. She had quite a good career the decades that followed so it all turned out fine. She became a faith healer or something like that later in life, some alternative trauma therapist. One thing about the UK while I agree the genre is more suited for the 50's I do really love it when classical singers enter the contest. Kenneth McKellar has a magnificent singing voice. For any classical/opera lovers out there check out Händel's Messiah with Dame Joan Sutherland and him as performers. Stunning. ❤

The only edition in which Sweden managed to come 2nd.
And we also saw the debut of a Eurovision conductor-legend. This was the first of a total of 22 finnish participants where Ossi Runne was the conductor.

It’s a big pity Italy’s result. Also was commented Gigliola was who has to sing Dio come ti amo but Domenico didn’t allow it and was very unpolite with organization and orchestra, singing, finally with the orchestra prerecorded
Who knows if it’s true. Anyway it’s a pity, the song is simply the best

Fun fact: Lil Lindfors would host the ESC in 1985 and Ase Kleveland in 1986. Norway '66 is one of my all time favorites as well.
The Dutch song isn't "Fernando from Filippo", it's "Fernando and Filippo". They're from Santiago. Fernando plays the guitar in San Antonio, Filippo is a couch potato....

Thanks for the video! My favourite from this year is probably Luxembourg but I also really love Merci, Chérie for a personal reason 😊. A special friend from a German-speaking country sent me this song many years ago and I had no idea that it is a winner of Eurovision back then (Btw the same friend also introduced me the German Liedermacher Reinhard Mey, I absolutely love his songs!). What I find sad is the fact that Udo Jürgens passed away right before Austria got to host Eurovision for the second time. The violin cover of his winning song in the 2015 contest was really touching and beautiful ❤🥺.
I was honestly surprised finding out that Åse Kleveland was only 16 when performing in 1966! Also, her pantsuit was pink, as I saw from a short old snippet 😊.

  • @Tenortalker

Ha Ha ' and now I've seen everything!' Apparently the idea to put Kenneth McKellar in a kilt came from one of the BBC production team. Who knows why? He really was a very good classical tenor and his recording of music by Handel remained in the catalogues for decades, but like Ingvar Wixell who appeared before for Sweden he was just out of place in the Eurovision even in 1966. Those early years of the contest where it was common to have one or two classically trained singers ( like Patricia Bredin for example) were now past. Many years later operatic singers performing crossover songs would return, but a long way to go yet before we get to that time!
Ase's song is a particular favourite and having listened to more of her recordings her voice became even better over the years. Michele Torr was still very popular in France when I was there a few years ago. Tereza is another of those really great singers who didn't do well in Eurovision- she joins a distinguished list of folks like Nana Mouskouri and Julio Iglesias.
Very cheeky comment Eurovision Histories. I am sure the juries would have loved to hear another of Udo's songs for a 4th year😁!
