    First of all Kev @kavemanaquatics I want to say thankyou for sharing your knowledge and experiences good and bad so the rest of us can learn. Your no nonsense straight to the point videos are a breath of fresh air making you my go to channel for information and the channel I will recommend to others. I recently started a fresh Mbuna tank 55 gal "already looking at the upgrade for when my fish outgrow this tank " anyway I did the fish in cycle way of things and I have to admit I added a massive bioload considering I wasn't cycled yet started with 4 finished with 22 in this tank . Dosed prime and stability every day and used my master test kit anyway 4 weeks in I hit 40ppm nitrate 5ppm Nitrite and 0ppm ammonia no water changes to this point so I didn't crash my cycle but was worried about nitrate . Referred back to your channel found this old stream 🙏 did a 50% water change then dosed prime and stability for another week. ammonia 0ppm Nitrite 0ppm nitrate 20ppm ph 7.8 and haven't lost a single fish 🙏 thank you sir if it wasn't for your channel I think I would have killed them all . Also running a fx6 on this tank 👌 I will start my regular weekly waterchanges now that everything is stable but continue to monitor everything

    I think reaching 40ppm of nitrates is inaccurate depending what the load is.. as far as how much livestock is in the tank, and that does not determine if your tank is REALLY cycled. I use fritzyme 7 and it is by far the best for cycling with fish in it.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад +1

      Granted some tanks won’t reach 40 with a small bio-load and/or plants…but the point is the same. You want to avoid water changes while it’s cycling.

    Hi @KavemanAquatics--first, love your content. You're so honest, straight to the point, and focused on the most salient parts of keeping an aquarium (thank you!!!); you really jump started my aquarium journey. I was wondering about a few things and would really appreciate your perspective: 1 - is it possible to overdose on stability? I have been very heavy handed with it as I was told there were no risks in doing so. 2 - I have several male/female pairs in my tank (two apisto pairs, 5 cardinal pairs) and anticipate the possibility of them reproducing--what do you recommend doing with the fry if they do reproduce (I only have 1 aquascaped tank and as much as I would love to, have no plans to get additional tanks)? These are the top two questions coming to mind for now :)

    Hi! I am new to this and stumbled on this video after a month of issues. I’ve been using prime and stability daily for one week and have seen a huge climb in my nitrate. However, last night my fish were behaving as if stressed (hiding in back, twitching while swimming) so I re-dosed prime. This morning I noticed they seem about the same. Ph is 7.6 nitrates are 25. We have a 55 gallon corner tank with sand substrate, 3 goldfish a pleco and 4 Cory catfish.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  Год назад +1

      Your nitrates arent high enough to be a real concern. Usually reaching about 40 ppm of nitrate would be your trigger to water change. Many fish can handle more than that as well. If your tank isnt cycled yet that needs to be your main priority. I highly suggest you check out my playlist for beginners. I’m still stumped. I’m following your advice with prime and stability, nitrates seem like they may be climbing however I’m noticing their gills are becoming red and they still seem stressed. They are however still swimming and eating but are less active as noted previously. We haven’t done a water change or addition in 2 weeks and have lost an inch or two to evaporation. Is there anything I should be doing aside from the above? I know a lot of this is a waiting game but I feel awful for them all

    been cycling it without fish and it’s been about 2 1/2 weeks now my ammonia level is 0.25 ppm My nitrite is 2 ppm and my nitrate is 0 ppm, why is my ammonia so low I have been using fish food for source of ammonia, and I’ve been using stability for my bacteria and prime for my water conditioner. Should I do a water change and start over? How long will the cycling process take?.

    If there’s an ammonia spike in an established tank, should we do a water change even if nitrates are less than .40ppm? Or still only if it’s above .40ppm? How about for a new tank? If there’s an ammonia spike in the new tank and nitrates are less than .40ppm, should we not do a water change bc that will kill the beneficial bacteria and restart the cycle?

    I found your channel after I had my only African Cichlid die last week. I believe she was 10-12 years old. I have a 55 gal. tank. At first I noticed she wasnt swimming around as much and was staying in the decor and was not eating, that I seen. I did a 80% water change (which was probably too much bc I hadn't done a water change in a while) and added API tap water conditioner.... I also put new bio-bags in filter and cleaned the decor off with tap water. 4 wks went by and I found my fish at the top gasping for air. I immediately did a 25% water change to try to put more oxygen in the tank and added stress coat+ The next morning she was dead. Tested the water - Nitrate level was High, Alk - High, water hardness very hard. Ammonia is ok, 0 Nitrite, and PH is in between ideal and high. Any thoughts on what I did wrong and how to get my tank levels correct so when I buy new fish they wont die? Sorry for the paragraph lol

    So I set up a brand new tank and waited 24 hours after adding stability and prime I also added api stress coat and some other things the pet store recommends. I added 3 fish and they died. I retested and my tank has been sitting 2 weeks now. My parameters are between 0 and 20 for nitrates, nitrites are slightly pink so 1.0 to 3.0, ammonia is at 0. Just to add not all tanks will hit 40PPM Nitrate. Depending on how much load you have and how much is being converted. As long as the amount of ammonia/nitrite produced is being converted (check to see if you're producing Nitrate) you're good. Especially since some people have plants that will eat up Nitrates faster that how much ammonia/nitrite is produced.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад +1

      You are correct sir. Depending on the specific setups some tanks may never reach 40ppm.

    Hey kave man dude, one other question, maybe lead in to a funny and conclusive video/ test. You mentioned natural ways to cycle a tank. This sounds crazy but hear me out, what about urinating in a tank to cycle and start the nitrogen cycle. 16-23 oz yeti mug full of piss hydrating obviously not drinking or eating asparagus and cycling with natural ammonia not chemical, food, sacrificial fish that fish stores typically don’t take back.. expensive alternatives, ect.. what are your thought on doing this type of cycle obviously not fish in first day R Kelly style lol which would probly be taboo and frowned upon in the fish keeping community but it may be an interesting video and science experiment and was wondering if this has been done to kick start bacteria as a readily available natural way. Lol your thoughts.

    I always thought live plants were a necessity for an aquarium environment….but I notice many tanks don’t bother… is this ok for fish?
    I must admit they get nibbled on or leaves become discoloured with algae..

    • @KaveManAquatics

      Plants do help in creating a healthy environment, mostly by removing nitrates from the water, but they’re definitely not a necessity. Your scheduled water changes will remove nitrates as well.

    I've been fish in cycling forever! Honestly, it's been about 2 months. Six fancy goldfish in a 75g running an FX4 and an Aquaclear 110. Just when I think it's there, the next day the nitrates spike and I have to do a water change. I'm changing 50% every 2 or 3 days! I keep adding Prime and Stability daily, and still high nitrates. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  Год назад +1

      Having nitrates does not mean your tank isnt cycled. When nitrates get to about 40PPM its an indication that its time to water change. But this is totally normal. Water changing consistently on a schedule is 1 way of reducing nitrates. If your ammonia and nitrites are both at 0, then your tank is cycled!

      Hopefully your PH hasn't dropped to low or that will prevent bacteria from growing...somewhere around 5-6. But you do need to stop water changing. While the tank is cycling you need the ammonia in the tank for bacteria to grow. Prime detoxifies that ammonia keeping the water safe for the fish. While Stability speeds up the bacterial growth. Hi Kev! So I'm super confused and have asked other aquarists for help as well, but no one seems to know why this is happening. I started my cycle about a month ago. My ammonia dropped to 0 within 24 hrs and my nitrites were off the charts for about 1 week. Then my nitrates finally rose to 5ppm. Now, for the past two weeks, my ammonia and nitrites reach 0 within 24 hrs. That means cycled right? However, my nitrates remain at 5ppm. They have never risen or lowered once since reaching 5ppm. How?? Where are my nitrites going then??? My nitrites were off the chart and now 0 so how can my nitrates still be stuck at 5???
    This is happening in both of my tanks.
    2 tanks, 29 gal & 50 gal
    pH 7.8 & 8.0
    Temp is about 70° in both
    Sand as substrate
    No plants
    Fishless cycle
    Used liquid ammonia, prime, & stability

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад

      If it's happening in both your tanks then I would look at the common denominator. Which is yourself and your test kit. Make sure you are testing correctly, and if you are, make sure you dont have a faulty test kit.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 года назад

      Wait...fishless cycle and you're using liquid ammonia....well if you dont continue to dose the ammonia and you dont have any fish, your nitrates will reach a certain level (like 5) and thats it. They won't continue to rise if you dont continue to dose ammonia.
